Main Line news

The recent Penmaenmawr stone train (20/12/21) was not a ballast train but a working of aggregate to Tuebrook (Liverpool) for Hanson Cement. There will be further workings in January. There is no news as yet about the Freightliner contract for NR ballast trains to the Crewe Virtual Quarry but Freightliner crews are now passed for the route after driver training for the recent PW work west of Llandudno Junction.

WAG has promised to reinstate trains from Llandudno to Liverpool Lime Street in 2022 via the reopened Halton Curve from Frodsham to Runcorn. Given the frequent overcrowding on the North Wales coast, passengers long for a return of the loco hauled 'crowd buster' Holyhead-Manchester which could run in future via Manchester Airport. The loco hauled Holyhead-Birmingham trains lost in 2000 are probably on their wish list as south Wales seems to get most of TfW's attention. With their recent purchase of redundant Mk4 coaches, North Wales passengers may feel it is unfair to allocate these solely to Swansea-Manchester services via Gloucester.

It is expected that the new battery/diesel hybrid Class 230 will be introduced on the Borderlands Line from May 2022 with 5 units (Nos.230006-10) allowing a half hour service in due course at peak times.

Christmas Glaslyn 31/12/21

The Christmas Glaslyn is fully booked today but both New Year's Day trains are available to book. Both today's pair of Christmas Cwellyn and tomorrow's were free to book this morning. The weather was better in the area on Friday with cloudy conditions and 11C forecast. Passengers managed to get to the railways despite various roads being blocked by floods from Thursday's downpour.

The signaller opened the box at 10:10 as people started to turn up for today's 10:50 departure. A steam loco emerged from Boston Lodge a few minutes later and came across The Cob. At 10:15 the locos entered the yard to extract the rake and proved to be David Lloyd George with Criccieth Castle following K1's failure on the afternoon service yesterday. The diesel was required as a Fairlie is limited to 6 coaches on the 1 in 40 to Beddgelert and this train has 7 coaches. At 10:25 the rake was drawn out onto The Cob then shunted back into the WHR platform. The locos uncoupled at 10:32 and ran round, coupling up to the front end at 10:38. The train departed on time at 10:50 with the diesel inside for insurance.

It was planned to use Merddin Emrys and Criccieth Castle on the afternoon service but K1 should return on the final workings on Saturday. Meanwhile, up at Caernarfon the Christmas Cwellyn is rostered for No.87 today and tomorrow. Merddin Emrys turned up at 12:55 light engine from Boston Lodge and waited in the loop for the return of the morning train. David Lloyd George pulled in at 13:05 with Criccieth Castle inside showing they had reversed order when running round independently at Beddgelert. At 13:10 David Lloyd George departed for Boston Lodge light engine, followed by Criccieth Castle which shunted onto the rear of Merddin Emrys. The pair then ran round and coupled to the front of the rake a few minutes later ready for the 14:15 departure.

There appeared to have been a movement across The Cob back towards Boston Lodge at 15:55 but the 14:15 train arrived back at 16:22 as booked with the steam loco leading the diesel loco. The rake was shunted to the yard promptly at 16:29 and the pair departed for Boston Lodge at 16:37 light engine.

Barmouth Bridge reopens 30/12/21

NR has reopened the Cambrian Coast Line on 30/12/21 following completion of Stage 2 (of 3) of the listed viaduct's refurbishment. The bridge will be closed again for a further 3 months from September-December 2022. See Daily Post story.

Christmas Glaslyn 30/12/21

It was a rainy mild day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 11C maximum. The train was back from the morning run by 13:05 and the loco had run to the fuelling point leaving the rake in the platform. At 14:00 K1 emerged from the yard and ran round the train. The train left on time at 14:15. At 16:20 it did not appear to have returned and at 16:38 Criccieth Castle passed light engine heading towards Beddgelert. The platform lights remained on and the signalbox was still manned indicating a recovery operation was underway.

It seems the loco's fire was the problem and K1's crew called for assistance. Passengers were warm and dry in heated carriages and KitKats were issued. The train arrived back in Porthmadog at 17:55, about 100 minutes late, piloted by Criccieth Castle. At 18:00 the diesel removed K1 and propelled it into the WHR loop at 18:05 before returning to couple to the train and dispose the stock to the station yard at 18:12 leaving K1 in the loop. The shunt was complete at 18:20 and the diesel ran round K1, departing at 18:30, propelling the failed loco to Boston Lodge.

This easterly view (30/12/21) shows K1 dumped in the WHR run round at Porthmadog while Criccieth Castle shunts the rake to the station yard ready for the following day's service. This afternoon's train was fully booked despite the dismal weather and the tomorrow morning's 10:50 is also fully booked. The remaining three services are still bookable. The four remaining Christmas Cwellyn trains running tomorrow and 1/1/22 are all bookable. There must be some question about the use of K1 on the remaining four Christmas Glaslyn services tomorrow and New Year's Day but the F&WHR could provide a double engine or two small locos to do the duty.

Christmas trains booking up 29/12/21

Today was the first of the Christmas Cwellyn trains and the afternoon working was fully booked. Trains also operate twice a day on the following three days including New Year's Day. The Christmas Glaslyn starts its second set of runs tomorrow and runs twice a day for the three days up to and including New Year's Day. Both trains on 30/12/21 are sold out and the morning train on 31/12/21 is sold out too. It is possible there may be late cancellations so it is always worth checking the F&WHR Booking website.

K1 Cold Turkey staff train 29/12/21

During a track inspection today the PW Supervisor Alex Spring was able to catch K1 on a staff special. Unusually the train seems to have run to Rhyd Ddu as the video seems to be at Pont Cae'r Gors. This was the traditional 'Cold Turkey' Xmas staff working to say thank you for all their efforts over Christmas which may explain why it was extended to Rhyd Ddu. This was also a good opportunity test of K1 prior to use on the Christmas Glaslyn for six trains timetabled over the period 30/12/21 to 1/1/22. A video of the shunting in Porthmadog Yard in preparation for the Cold Turkey working is also available on the Friends of F&WHR Facebook page.

February Half Term holiday services?

Welsh Heritage Railways are already releasing plans for 2022 subject to COVID restrictions. The BLR are advertising trains from 17/2/22 over the 2 weeks staggered Half Term Holiday. The TR is offering services from 19-27/2/22. Neither the LR nor the F&WHR has yet made any announcements about Half Term Holiday trains, a period when snow is most likely on the two railways. The F&WHR will have to decide soon if it is to offer a Half Term service. The General Manager has suggest that the current 'book in advance' model will continue into 2022 but that 'turn up and go/hop on-hop off fares' might be considered too. This could be achieved by reserving one coach per train for such passengers. It is also currently very expensive for single passengers to travel on the F&WHR, unless FRS/WHRS members, as they have to book a compartment for two.

Llangollen cancels Mince Pie Specials 22/12/21

Following the WAG announcement of restrictions from 26/12/21, the Llangollen Railway has cancelled its extensive Festive Train programme due to run over Xmas Bank Holiday and New year period as it cannot comply with the new regulations. Pre-booked passengers will be refunded when the office reopens from 4/1/22. The Tal-y-llyn Railway is continuing with its plans for Festive trains which run until 3/1/22. The SMR is closed for Winter as is the BLR. The F&WHR is continuing with its COVID compliant plans and all eight Christmas Cwellyn trains (29/12/21-1/1/22) and six Christmas Glaslyn trains (30/1/21-1/1/22) currently have space. However it seems snow is unlikely over the period with unseasonably mild temperatures forecast, even on Snowdon Summit!

Christmas Auction for Railway Children (1/1/22)

A message from Paul Lewin (F&WHR GM) Well here is an interesting thing for Christmas. We have built a new cab for Castell Caernarfon. The old one was just about to go in the skip last week. It occurred to us that someone might like it. So as it is Christmas we thought we would sell it to the highest bidder. The proceeds will go to the Railway Children charity. They look out for and help street children the world over including children in the UK that run away from home. They help children at times when help is truly needed. So the plan is….send your bid to me by personal message or email. The highest bid by midday on the 1/1/22 will win. However before you bid please remember that you will need to collect the cab from Boston Lodge and this must happen before the end of January. We can lift it on to a flat back truck. The control desks are not included as they are going to be refurbished and reused. Of course you may just wish to make a donation to the Railway Children.

Snow Scenes from 2010

It has been a while since it was possible to video/photograph the WHR with lying snow when trains are running. Global warming and reduced Winter services have led to no images coming to hand in recent years so here is a set of videos and photos from 2010 when trains last ran with good snow cover for several days.

Caernarfon in the snow 18/12/10!

A heavy snowfall on 17/12/10 saw some 6 inches of snow around the WHR, even in Caernarfon. The Santa Trains from Caernarfon to Waunfawr on 18-19/12/10 were set to run in a winter wonderland as cold sunny weather was forecast for the weekend! Trains depart Caernarfon at 1030/1230/1430. Any photos would be welcome.

However a message on the FR website stated that the 1030 train is cancelled and Facebook/twitter links confirm the cancellation. The 1230 train will however run!

'Regrettably the 10.30 train today from Caernarfon has had to be cancelled. A combination of track conditions and staff shortages due to weather conditions has caused this. We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the morning and post updates here, therefore please keep checking. You can also monitor the situation on our Facebook or twitter pages if required. Contact the booking office on 01766 516070 for further information.'

Santa Specials 19/12/10

All day brilliant sunshine and six inches of snow were present on the WHR on 19/12/10 and all three Santa Specials ran. The mode of operation is as follows. Castell Caernarfon draws the rake out of the Carriage Shed and shunts it into the southbound platform. No.138 arrives from the Loco Shed runs past the train and shunts onto the front of the rake. The assemblage then departs for Caernarfon at about 1000. At Caernarfon, No.138 runs around and waters so the rake is double headed uphill to Waunfawr. At Waunfawr, No.138 runs around and leads the rake back to Caernarfon with the Funkey on the rear. For the ECS at the end of the day, the rake stops adjacent to the Carriage Shed and No.138 shunts off to refuel. The Funkey drags the rake into the headshunt and propels it back to the Carriage Shed. Finally No.138 shunts to the Loco Shed.

There are two more days of operation on 22-23/12/10 and the Caernarfon Station shop is open for business all day. Snow is likely to lie on the ground on those days as some 15cm was present on 19/12/10 with little sign of melting and forecast temperatures not rising until 22-23/12/10. The main roads are clear and your editor had no problem driving 200 miles along the A14/M6/M56/A55 route.

Xmas Service 27/12/10

The Xmas service started on 27/12/10 with snow still on the ground at Caernarfon and No.138 paired with Castell Caernarfon. With the line blocked at Goat Tunnel and the loop out of action at Beddgelert, No.138, ran around to the rear of the train at Rhyd Ddu and the Funkey led the rake downhill. An attempt to water at Beddgelert was unsuccessful as the valve was jammed, despite the locos chimney being placed under it for 10 minutes! Passenger numbers were relatively light (despite the alpine snowclad scenery), although the roads to Caernarfon were clear.

WHR snow scenes 28/12/10

FR diesel Harlech Castle broke through the icicles in the tunnels whilst making a line inspection trip form Porthmadog to Beddgelert on 28/12/10, the first visit by the loco to the WHR. While the service train did not progress beyond Beddgelert again, Harlech Castle departed south just before No.138 returned north from Beddgelert.

Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services

At the end of 23/12/21 the loco and carriages of 2021's final Santa Special train are being tucked up in their sheds for the Christmas break but they will not be there for too long. The trains were a sell out this year justifying the WHRS pushing the F&WHR to allow them to be run. After all the family Xmas celebrations there will come a time when people need a break from the TV, Xmas games, food and drinks. The F&WHR can help with that as they are running their seasonal scenic Christmas Cwellyn trains again from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu from 29/12/21 to 1/1/22. In fact, there will be two trains each day, departing at 10:45 and 13:45 - perfect for those who like an early start, as well as for those who enjoy a little 'lie-in'! So, why not book your tickets now for a revitalising train ride through the beautiful scenery of Snowdonia. It is a great way to get rid of those post-Christmas Day blues! Further information and links to online booking available at festrail.co.uk/Christmas. On 24/12/21 all 8 Christmas Cwellyn trains had compartments free. The F&WHR will also be running Christmas Glaslyn trains hauled by K1 from Porthmadog to Beddgelert and return on the 30/12/21-1/1/22, departing at 10:50 and 14:15. All six trains had compartments free to book. The Met Office weather forecast suggest there will be snow on the mountains of Snowdonia over the Xmas weekend perhaps creating an alpine backdrop for the Festive Season Trains.

F&WHR traffic 22/12/21

The Winter Solstice was on 21/12/21 and longest night that followed saw freezing temperatures with clear skies across much of the UK but with rain and 9C maximum temperatures forecast at Porthmadog. Snow is forecast on the mountains from 25/12/21.

At 08:57 Upnor Castle arrived light engine from Boston Lodge. The loco set off towards Beddgelert at 09:00 presumably on a proving run to check the line is clear in advance of the 10:50 Christmas Glaslyn.

The signalman turned up at 09:30 to open the box in preparation for the shunting before the 10:50 Christmas Glaslyn departure. Steam was visible at 09:41 in Boston Lodge with shunting into the Carriage Shed. K1 emerged from the Carriage Shed at 10:05 and crossed The Cob light engine at 10:10 to extract the rake from Harbour Station yard 10:10. At 10:20 the 7 coach rake was hauled onto The Cob and shunted into the WHR platform by 10:23 with Observation Car No.152 Eryri-Snowdonia on the front for the Gold passengers. K1 ran round at 10:28 and had coupled up by 10:32 as passengers joined the train.

Departure was delayed until 11:08 by passengers arriving late. Seemingly, some of the cast of Aladdin were present to wave the train away with Widow Twankey visible at least!

The train arrived back at 13:06 with the weather having turned rainy by midday. The loco immediately uncoupled and shunted to the yard to coal and water while the rake was subject to COVID compliant deep cleaning. The loco remerged from the yard at 13:25 and ran round its train before coupling up at 13:30 ready for the 14:15 departure which was on time. This in turn arrived back from Beddgelert at about 16:10 and the rake was disposed to Boston Lodge, promptly departing at 16:16 as it would not be required again until 30/12/21 when the Christmas Glaslyn trains will run until 1/1/22.

WHR Santa Specials fully booked

The remaining four WHR Santa Specials on 22-23/12/21 are currently fully booked. There may be some last minute cancellations so it is still worth looking at the Fare Harbor website. Six of the 8 remaining Christmas Glaslyn trains are free to book except the 10:50 on 22 and 30/12/21. All 8 Christmas Cwellyn trains are also free to book.

COVID latest 22/12/21

WAG has increased restrictions saying there can be no attendance at sporting fixtures from 26/12/21 to prevent super-spreader events. Meanwhile there has been more 'dither and delay' from the Prime Minister according to the national press with no additional preventative measures before Christmas despite dire warnings from Government scientists. While the rest of Europe imposes much stricter rules including lockdowns nothing has been announced other easing the 10 day isolation rule.

WAG met 21/12/21 to consider and announce additional measures and these might include precautions that could affect Hospitality and Tourism. It has been reported that these could include measures to restrict restaurants to serve outside only and a two week 'circuit-breaker' lock down, possibly from 28/12/21, which would definitely affect the planned Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services.

On 22/12/21 Mark Drakeford, Welsh First Minister, announced changes that will affect the F&WHR as Wales moves to Alert Level 2 from 26/12/21. The 2m rule returns and no more than six can meet in a group in Spooners. Spooners must provide table service which will hit its buffet offerings. Face coverings must be worn except when eating/drinking and contact details must be taken. Close contacts of people who have COVID will no longer have to self isolate provided they have been fully vaccinated. Instead they must take lateral flow tests to prove they are free of the illness. On the positive side WAG is granting business rate relief next financial year. The F&WHR business rates will be cut to 50% of normal in 2022-2023 but relief will be capped at £110,000 per business.

Barmouth Bridge update 22/12/21

Walkers will get a Christmas bonus when an iconic railway bridge footpath temporarily reopens over the festive period. The 900-yard long Barmouth Viaduct will be open from Christmas Day until 9/1/22 for pedestrians. The Grade II* listed structure has been undergoing a £30m restoration since September, but engineers found it to be in a much worse condition than anticipated. The walkway will close again on 10/1/21 and reopen in mid-February. The longer closure of the walkway will allow Network Rail to repair and replace any elements of the walkway and hand rails of a safety critical nature. The railway works were extended by 17 days and are on track to be completed with the bridge reopened to trains on 29/12/21.

During 2022, the bridge will be closed from Sunday, 11/9/22 to Sunday, 11/12/22 to allow the next phase to be completed. Network Rail will replace the formerly opening girder spans of the viaduct and the associated track. They will also be upgrading the track at the north and south end of the viaduct. TfW will be providing rail replacement services during the railway closure and passengers are advised to check before travelling.

Moving Pictures No.58 20/12/21

The latest moving picture shows K1's first Christmas Glaslyn run on 18/12/21. For some reason the train stopped briefly at Nantmor and struggled to get the 7 coach rake restarted on the 1 in 40 there but made it to Beddgelert after severe slipping. The suspected reportable incident referred to below must have happened on the way back and information received from walkers in the Aberglaslyn Pass suggests the train was stopped just south of Sheepfold Cutting (aka Corlan). Although the Saturday afternoon and all Sunday services were cancelled, it is to the credit of the F&WHR that the Christmas Glaslyn service operated normally on 22/12/21 after the rear four coaches of the train were recovered on 19/12/21 (see below).

Main Line news 20/12/21

North Wales freight has made a welcome return after several years absence with the reopening of the Penmaenmawr stone loading terminal. The first train ran on 20/12/21 with GBRf 60087 hauling the train to Penmaenmawr in the morning. The inbound working 6D60 was 23 JNA wagons from Tuebrook Sidings to Penmaenmawr Quarry. Several photos and a video are available on the Railways of North Wales Facebook page. The last stone traffic from Penmaenmawr was almost 10 years ago. GBRf hauled the Wylfa flask traffic from Valley Nuclear Electric until the final fuel rods were removed on 18/9/19. Other than the occasional route learner, there has been no freight traffic on the North Wales Coast Line in the last two years. The stone train left 156 minutes late in the dark after experiencing problems with the conveyor belt during loading. As a result only 17/23 wagons appeared loaded on 6K22 the 14:23 Penmaenmawr to Tuebrook.

Following concerns about Class 67 availability No.67015 was given preventative attention at Holyhead over the weekend and ran as a normal passenger train to Cardiff on 20/12/21 as the 05:33 to Cardiff after a little difficulty cold starting before dawn.

TfW intends to introduce an emergency timetable from 22/12/21 to deal with anticipated staff absences during the surge in COVID Omicron cases. See TfW website for more details. Under fire for overcrowding on the North Wales Coast, TfW has said it will redeploy coaching stock released by the 10-15% cuts it is implementing to strengthe2/21

F&WHR traffic 19/12/21

Sunday dawned bright and sunny at Porthmadog with temperatures up to a mild 10C at midday. At 09:15 a train left Boston Lodge and at 09:22 it was noted to be Upnor Castle propelling a DZ wagon with 3 staff. The train crossed Britannia Bridge and was presumably heading for the site of yesterday's problems in the Aberglaslyn Pass that led to the cancellation of Saturday afternoon's Christmas Glaslyn train. Sunday's two trains were also cancelled leading to a substantial loss of income from the 3 trains as well as upset to the refunded passengers. This is almost unprecedented in recent times on the F&WHR except after storms or derailments. There is still no indication of the nature of the problem.

This easterly view (19/12/21) shows Upnor Castle propelling a PW wagon towards Beddgelert departing the WHR platform at 09:22. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is courtesy F&WHR webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

At 12:16 Upnor Castle reappeared dragging a four coach rake with Observation Car No.152 on the rear. Presumably this is the rake recovered from yesterday's incident. Given the 3 hours needed, the rake is likely to have been recovered from Beddgelert/Aberglaslyn Pass, which implies passengers may have been bussed back from there to Porthmadog on Saturday morning or returned in a special working. It has been suggested that K1 could haul a fully loaded seven coach train to Beddgelert but it is not known if the Christmas Glaslyn was loaded to seven bogies on Saturday morning. The train later departed at 12:26 for Boston Lodge.

Despite the problems with the Christmas Glaslyn, the WHR Santa Specials operated as normal over the weekend, though without any snow on the mountains in the unseasonable high temperatures and strong sunshine. No.87 was paired with Vale of Ffestiniog again on the Saturday afternoon working. All six remaining WHR Santa Special trains are fully booked as of Sunday though the odd cancellations may mean it is still worth looking for bookings. All eight of the Christmas Cwellyn trains from Caernarfon are still bookable and seven of the remaining eight Christmas Glaslyn trains are bookable with just the 10:50 on 30/12/21 fully booked.

This easterly view (19/12/21) shows No.130 and Vale of Ffestiniog hauling the afternoon Santa Special around Ffridd Isaf curve into Rhyd Ddu in Winter sunshine. No sign of any snow! COVID questions 19/12/21

The Government has confirmed the COVID Omicron epidemic is accelerating out of control and the Cabinet was meeting on Sunday to consider the evidence and scientific advice and what additional measures might be necessary. Several newspapers seemed to have been briefed that stronger measures might indeed be needed to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed after Xmas and the Health Minister said on Sunday that he could not rule out such measures BEFORE Christmas. Holland entered a strict lockdown and both Germany and France took strong action to prevent the importing of Omicron from the UK by restricting inbound passengers. It seems another 'circuit break lockdown' might be possible. The next WAG review is on Christmas Eve and may produce stronger measures than those already advised to be implemented from Boxing Day. Any such restrictions may affect the F&WHR's Christmas Cwellyn/Christmas Glaslyn trains planned between 28/12/21 and New Year's Day.

Sunday Roast at Spooners (19/12/21)

Don't forget - Spooner's popular Sunday Carvery is on the menu on 19/12/21! You can't beat a traditional Sunday Roast dinner, especially when you don't have to cook it yourself. So why not take it easy on a Sunday - come to Spooner's and let us look after you! Carvery served between 12:00 and 16:00. Phone the F&WHR on 01766 516032 to reserve a table.

Operational difficulties 18/12/21

Saturday afternoon's Christmas Glaslyn was cancelled after operational difficulties just before departure time! This is most unusual on the F&WHR as normally there is a spare loco in steam or a main line diesel to cope with a loco problem. There seems to be uncertainty about Sunday's trains too as this website went to press!

The official F&WHR statement is as follows:-

'This afternoon's Christmas Glaslyn train from Porthmadog to Beddgelert has been cancelled due to operational difficulties. Pre-booked passengers are being contacted by the Booking Office, with a refund of their payment. We will provide further information regarding Christmas Glaslyn trains on Sunday 19/12/21 as soon as details are available.'

The F&WHR also removed the two trains on 19/12/21 from its FareHarbor booking app although trains on 22/12/21, 29-31/12/21 and 1/1/22 are still avilable to book

A further announcement two hours later said:-

'Unfortunately, we are unable to sort out our operational problems today. This means that we will have to cancel the Christmas Glaslyn trains planned to run on Sunday 19/12/21. Once again, pre-booked passengers are being contacted by the Booking Office, with a refund of their payment. It is expected that the Christmas Glaslyn trains will run as planned on 22/12/21, 30-31/12/21 and 1/1/22. Santa's Christmas Carriage Grotto at Harbour Station and the Santa Trains on the Welsh Highland Railway are unaffected and will continue as planned.'

This situation is bound to have caused some consternation amongst passengers, some of whom may have travelled hundreds of miles from Midlands and North West to see the F&WHR in Winter. Temperatures on Snowdon Summit reached 12C today and there is unlikely to be any snow but snow on the summit is forecast for 23/12/21. If the problem is with K1 and the FR is short of a loco for the Christmas Glaslyn there is always a spare Garratt at Dinas! Maybe the problem was with Cae Pawb NR Crossing or the points at Beddgelert? It seems strange there are no details and this sometimes means a reportable incident has occurred.

F&WHR traffic 18/12/21

It was a sunny sunset on 18/12/21 with some shunting of the Carriage Sheds at Boston Lodge possibly with Criccieth Castle noted at 15:45 when the webcams were back in action. There was no sign of steam disposal in Boston Lodge. The temperature at Porthmadog was 10C, mild for the time of year.

F&WHR website problems 18/12/21

After the F&WHR's Fareharbor ticket sales went down for a while on Friday afternoon all three Webcams were also down on Saturday so enthusiasts could not watch the departure of K1 on the first of the Christmas Glaslyn services. The problems extended to all three webcams. The F&WHR seems to be experiencing ongoing technical problems with its website. It is also possible the F&WHR has switched off its webcams in response to the difficulties experienced on Saturday with the Christmas Glaslyn, following cancellation of the afternoon working, as they have also switched off comments on their Facebook page (see above).

COVID cancellations affecting hospitality and tourism 18/12/21

The Welsh population seems to be responding to Mark Drakeford's (the Welsh First Minister) suggestion that people reduce their social contacts over Christmas. Hospitality has been particularly hit with many people cancelling meals out. Your webmaster has cancelled a planned Christmas get together with his family who live in North Wales. Due to a few cancellations the Santa Specials have availability on the 13:00 on Sunday 19/12/21 as of Saturday afternoon but returned tickets for later dates were quickly resold.

Oswestry Earthquake 17/12/21

The Liberal Democrats overturned a huge 23,000 Tory majority to win the North Shropshire by-election by 6,000 votes on 16/12/21. This has implications for rail in the area. The Tories will need to win this seat back and must make good on Boris Johnson's promises to electrify and extend London trains to Shrewsbury and to restore the Gobowen-Oswestry branch.

New COVID rules 17/12/21

The new WAG COVID rules are basically to follow the 2m rule and to have separate entrances and exits in businesses. These come into effect in Wales on 27/12/21 and should not be onerous for the F&WHR to instigate as this is what they were doing earlier in the year.

FR trackwork 16/12/21

Alex Spring (F&WHR PW Manager) reports about the section between Boston Lodge and Rhiw Plas bridge:-

'Nearly done, after just over five weeks hard slog by the close of play tomorrow (17/12/21) we will have a complete railway again having prepared just over 250m of formation, re-ballasted and relaid the track using plastic sleepers. The opportunity was also taken to improve the water supply and drainage to the cottages and 75m of track drainage was lowered such that is now below sleeper level. After a well earned Christmas break work will resume, delivering 400 tonnes of ballast and lifting and lining the track. A big thanks to the PW team and volunteers that have worked tirelessly to get us this far.

Broken WHR starter signal

Recent storms have exacerbated wood rot and led to the WHR starter signal bracket collapsing and being secured in place awaiting fresh wood. This signal normally controls ECS trains from the WHR platform working onto The Cob which will now be given the right away by traditional green flag.

First Christmas Glaslyn to run Saturday 18/12/21

The first Christmas Glaslyn service will run on Saturday 18/12/21 hauled by K1. The 10:50 service will take a short break at Beddgelert for watering and run round before returning to Porthmadog 2.25 hours later ready for deep cleaning before the afternoon working. Seats are still available to book on all four trains this Saturday/Sunday. The Christmas Cwellyn service from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu runs for the four days from 29/12/21-1/1/22.

F&WHR services in 2022 16/12/21

The Daily Post has reported on the F&WHR plans to cautiously increase services next year whilst still 'living in the shadow of COVID'.

COVID shock 16/12/21

WAG is set to make an announcement about changed COVID rules on Friday after a record number of people were reported infected on Wednesday with 78,610 new cases across the UK and 88,376 on Thursday. In some places like London, Manchester and the Scottish Lowlands the Omicron infection is approaching 50% of the new cases, doubling every 2-3 days. In North Wales schools are shutting early for Christmas on Friday. Some 62 cases of the Omicron variant have been identified in Wales but more than a third (23) of them are in South Wales (Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan). Already cancellations and staff absences are affecting hospitality and tourism across the UK. Any new COVID measures might impact the F&WHR Santa Specials and Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn trains.

The recent misty mild spell is coming to an end today according to the Met Office forecasts. Temperatures are set to drop to 5C maximum this weekend and down to 3C maximum by the final Santa Specials on 22-23/12/21 bringing a higher likelihood of snow, at least on the peaks.

Santa Specials fully booked 15/12/21

The WHR Santa specials were fully booked by Wednesday afternoon. Those people who missed the boat might still find it worth looking for late bookings as there are occasional cancellations. The FareHarbor booking website was down on Wednesday afternoon for a while but all Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services except the 10:50 Christmas Glaslyn on 30/12/21 are free to book.

Main Line news 14-15/12/21

Work is underway refurbishing the stone conveyor at Penmaenmawr ready for the resumption of stone trains from these sidings next year. It is 10 years since stone trains last worked out of Penmaenmawr stone terminal.

Saphos Trains Christmas White Rose dining excursion ran from Llandudno Junction to York on 15/12/21. The train was top and tailed to Chester by 47593 Galloway Princess looking fine in revised livery and 47853. No.46100 Royal Scot replaced 47593 at Chester with 47853 remaining on the rear to York and arriving 8 minutes down. The train ran ECS from/to Crewe.

Power bogie returns to Dinas 14/12/21

The second refurbished power bogie off No.138, the front unit, has returned to Dinas by lorry. This is destined to go under No.143 which is the next loco to be restored. It was not possible to transfer via rail as the pony truck tends to derail when not loaded by the boiler frame. Also the section to Pont Croesor was under a PW possession in preparation for the regular Christmas Glaslyn services from18/12/21.

Garratts on Santa Specials 11-14/12/21

No. 130 and No.87 hauled the Santa Specials on Saturday 11/12/21 with No.130 on the morning turn. The roster was duplicated on Sunday. Vale of Ffestiniog assisted inside on all workings. Bookings remain high with compartments only available on one of the 8 remaining services as of 13/12/21, the 09:15 on 22/12/21. However, the booking situation remains fluid as by the afternoon of 14/12/21 cancellations had released compartments on the 13:00 on 18/12/21 whereas the 22/12/21 is now fully booked. There were just 5 Santa Special compartments available this morning so it is still worth looking for late bookings.

Most of the Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services are still available to book. The 10:30 Christmas Glaslyn on 30/12/21 is the first to be fully booked but all 8 Christmas Cwellyn services are still available. After a mild week, next weekend is currently forecast to be misty with 5C maximum temperatures at Caernarfon and more potential for snow on Snowdon on Sunday. Any photos of the Santa Specials would be welcome.

Omicron emergency

After the Prime Minister sombre declaration of an 'Omicron emergency' in a special TV broadcast late on Sunday evening 12/12/21, Mark Drakeford, Wales First Minister, has responded. Some press commentators see the announcement from Boris Johnson as more of the 'too little, too late' Tory response to COVID or a distraction to the Tories' current 'Partygate' problems in the face of an important by-election in North Shropshire (Oswestry). A statement was later released by Mr Drakeford saying WAG was stepping up the booster programme in Wales and warned that the country was facing a 'serious situation' and more measures could be introduced. Such measures could potentially impact the remaining F&WHR Santa Specials and Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services.

End of the slide scanning project!

Phew!! With the final set of the Prince of Wales slides scanned (shown above) that represents the end of your webmaster's slide scanning project which has encompassed over 30 years and 10,000 slides since January 1970.The Sigma SA300 SLR used until June 2002 developed a cracked base by its battery compartment which would not latch shut as a result rendering the camera unusable. With digital technology looming, a Samsung Digimax 230 was purchased which was used for a few years. However the resolution at 2MP did not match that of slides and a Jessops Centon DF300 was purchased and used for the few weeks of slides leading up to Prince Charles visit before reverting to the Samsung and CF cards again and avoiding the cost of film. Due to the cost of the cards and their small memory the images were downloaded to floppies, some of which have unfortunately corrupted and an external drive that was also used failed. As the Samsung Digimax 230 restarted its picture labelling at 1 every time it was used, a lot of sorting out of these images and cross referencing with the WHR archive will be required before publication on this website.

For the final six months of 2004 a Concord eyeQ 3340z 3.1MP compact was used but with limited functions. At least it had SD card storage which was becoming cheaper. Finally the Kodak DX6490 4MP was purchased from 29/1/05 offering results close to slides and with excellent autofocus.

K1 on test 13/12/21

After some attention at Boston Lodge K1 made a loaded test run up the Aberglaslyn Pass on Monday 13/12/21. There were 8 coaches in the ECS representing a heavy load for K1 on the 1 in 40 representing a loaded 7 coach train (the normal timing load). With both operational Garratts currently at Dinas, it has been confirmed that K1 will be used on the Christmas Glaslyn workings.

North Wales main line news (12/12/21)

Six train services are set to start running in North Wales from Sunday 12/12/21. These include additional services on the Cambrian Coast Line, the Borderlands Line and the Heart of Wales Line. Sadly there are no additional loco hauled trains on the North Wales Coast Line. See Daily Post story.

Station usage figures have shown Pont-y-pant on the Blaenau Ffestiniog branch is one of the least used stations on NR. This might be due to the lack of ramblers during COVID who used to get off at the stop. See Daily Post story.

Work on protecting the coastline at Old Colwyn has been at a stop for much of the Autumn because of a lack of suitable large rocks. This despite the nearby quarries at Penmaenmawr and Llysfaen! The rock armour protects the promenade, the North Wales Coast line and the A55. Deliveries are set to resume before Christmas. Failure to protect the coastline in 1990 caused the railway to be swept away in storms between Rhyl and Abergele and many houses flooded. See BBC Towyn Flood story.

First Santa Specials 11/12/21

The first Santa Specials were due to leave Caernarfon today, a rainy day with temperatures up to 12C in the Caernarfon area. Bookings have been brisk in the last few days with this weekend's trains fully booked. In fact eleven of the twelve trains offered are now fully booked with only the morning train on Wednesday 22/12/21 available though sometimes cancellations provide the odd compartment available on other days so its always worth looking. Sadly, it is unlikely there will be much, if any, snow on the mountains this weekend to provide an alpine seasonal backdrop at Rhyd Ddu where the trains run round.

Mark Drakeford's 'Xmas lockdown' controversy 11/12/21

Mark Drakeford has refused to deny he called for a Christmas lockdown on Wednesday in a phone conversation with Tory Minister Michael Gove and the leaders of Scotland and Northern Ireland. A report in the Right Wing Guido Fawkes Blog spread the leaks. The Welsh First Minister said that leaking stories of private phone calls was a Tory distraction technique at a time when the media is focussed on Boris Johnson's problems. With the Tories tipped to lose the North Shropshire by-election to the Lib Dems on Thursday 16/12/21 and suffering a huge drop in public support over recent revelations it is possible they might welcome such distractions! If WAG does go ahead with its own lockdown in the face of rapidly rising COVID figures this could adversely affect the F&WHR's plan to run Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn trains during the festive period. On 4/12/21 the area around Caernarfon/Bangor had some of the highest COVID rates per thousand residents in Wales even before Omicron struck.

Despite it not being a legal requirement, WAG strongly advise that both employees and customers wear a face covering indoors in pubs and restaurants. This advice applies unless they are exempt or actively eating, drinking. The BBC reports that WAG will review COVID threats week by week and that rules could change very drastically if the outbreak spiked.

Santa Specials booking well 10/12/21

It seems the F&WHR got away lightly with Storm Barra and there is no disruption to services planned for this weekend. Nine of the 12 Santa Specials are now fully booked with availability restricted to the morning train on Sunday 12/12/21 and both morning and afternoon trains on Wednesday 22/12/21 (presumably a day people could not get off on holiday). There have been a few cancellations (possibly people worried about the new COVID Omicron wave) so it is worth checking trains to see if availability reappears. All trains will operate with the same WAG COVID security as previously with compartments/facemask rules and cleaning between each service. All of the Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn trains are still available to book.

Santa's Christmas Carriage Grotto will be appearing at Porthmadog for an additional day. It is now available at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 or 15:00 on 18-19/12/21 and 22-23/12/21. The Grotto Coach may be shunted into the station as in previous years. To book any of these services click on the Festrail Christmas link. It is possible to combine a booking on the Christmas Glaslyn with a visit to the Santa's Christmas Grotto Coach on 18th ,19th and 22/12/21.

Spooners' Bingo night 10/12/21

Thursday was French Night at Spooners and Friday 10/12/21 will be Bingo Night. Spooners is starting their Friday Night Bingo sessions this Friday. Come along and enjoy a fun evening with friends and family. Bingo cards will be on sale from 19:30 to 19:45 and the games start at 20:00. Tickets cost £2 for three games and bingo dabbers are available at £1 each. There will be cash prizes and a number of special offers on drinks and cocktails. The F&WHR are looking forward to welcoming customers to Spooner's - and remember, the Bar Menu is available on Friday evenings with hot food served from 17:00-20:00, so why not have a tasty meal before the fun starts!

WAG COVID announcement 10/12/21

Speaking on 10/12/21, Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said that case numbers were currently low in Wales at the moment but WAG would have to act quickly if numbers rise quickly and steeply as is happening in England and Scotland.

MOEL Y GEST refurbishment 9/12/21

The Boston Lodge works diesel pilot, trusty Hunslet shunter MOEL Y GEST, has been receiving some refurbishment over the last couple of months. A service, de-sludge plus repair of the fuel tank, fitting of an extra horn button, removal of redundant pipes as well as substantial body repairs around the back lower half of the cab, have been followed by a full repaint of the cab interior and external bodywork.

Storm Barra hits North Wales 7/12/21

NR in connection with TfW are insisting on a 40 mph speed restriction and extended journey times over Tuesday and Wednesday 7-8/12/21 as Storm Barra hits North Wales. With 70 mph winds likely tress and other debris may fall across the track and setting a speed limit of 40mph gives trains more time to stop if they drivers see an obstruction ahead. One gust at Aberdaron on the Llyn peninsula topped 86mph and heavy seas hit The Cob. In fact it appears all TfW trains to Blaenau Ffestiniog are cancelled!

It is possible the WHR will be hit by the storm with high winds bringing down trees and power lines just before Santa Specials start this weekend. As regards the WHR Santa Specials, three of the six days are now fully booked, with only the three morning trains left available on 11th,12th and surprisingly 22/12/21. All the Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn trains are currently available to book.

See Wales Online story.

Beddgelert 'Frontier' station concept

It seems likely that the F&WHR will be continuing to operate its 'Frontier Service' like the FR/WHR of old with trains from Caernarfon and Porthmadog travelling to Beddgelert. However this model does not currently provide a through service as it was designed to ensure that two trains did not meet there in order to reduce crowding on the platforms and comply with WAG's COVID regulations. The ticketing arrangements were for return services only and anyone who wanted to make a through journey would find it very expensive, have a long wait at Beddgelert and have to return to their starting point by bus or taxi.

When Phase 3 to Rhyd Ddu was under completion planning permission was sought for a station building in the car park area just outside the footpath crossing but this was later abandoned in favour of a more significant station building at Beddgelert. In fact as Phase 4 developed, the concrete foundation for the Beddgelert station building was completed right next to the current wooden station building. There were some objections from Beddgelert residents that had the station building gone ahead it would abstract revenue from local businesses. This despite the substantial climb up to the station from the car park and the fact the trains would have brought additional visitors to the village.

If the Frontier station business model is here to stay then surely the F&WHR must look to provide a permanent building on the current foundation at Beddgelert. This should provide facilities for a trainload of people who might arrive and descend into Beddgelert during their hour or so break. While the train itself can provide shelter during its layover in case of inclement weather and the existing toilets seem just about adequate, a cafe and shop might be helpful in the longer term.

Omicron hits Wales 7/12/21

The Tories confirmed that 4 cases of the new highly infectious Omicron variant of COVID have been found in Wales (of 336 cases nationwide) confirming that Omicron is spreading within the community independently of any imported cases from overseas. The BBC website anticipates Wales may introduce new rules shortly. The Welsh Health Minister Eluned Morgan revealed that WAG expected a COVID surge in January (see BBC report) but all Welsh adults will be offered booster vaccinations by the end of January. Various plans are available if the NHS in Wales is overwhelmed, potentially including lockdowns. It is possible these might impact the F&WHR's festive train services but Mark Drakeford, the Welsh First Minister, has said he does not expect any drastic measures to affect retail and entertainment over Xmas.

FR relaying 4/12/21

Cambrian Heritage railway trial runs 13-20/11/21

In preparation for the 2022 season the Cambrian Heritage Railway has run some passenger trains to its new southern terminus at Weston Wharf. With the Pacers having been moved from Gobowen to Oswestry they were available for a Members Special on 13/11/21 before the AGM. The following weekend a special was run to Weston Wharf for a brewery visit for 20 plus members of North Shropshire CAMRA. Next year a timetabled service is planned between Oswestry and Weston Wharf on operating days.

Good Santa Special bookings 4/12/21

With just a week to go before the first Santa Specials run, two days (19/12/21 and 23/12/21) are already fully booked as are all six afternoon trains. Four of the 6 morning trains are still available to book excepting those two dates. All the Christmas Glaslyn/Christmas Cwellyn trains are still available to book.

No.143 update 3/12/21

Paul Lewin (F&WHR General manager) has kindly provided this update on No.143:

'As requested an update on No.143 following last week's update on No.138. No.143 was expected to be available for service for its last season in 2020. It passed annual inspection without problems in February 2020. The expected out of service date being late September. The boiler insurers changed their rules at this time and subsequently told us that the boiler needed immediate withdrawal for inspection and hydraulic test. Whilst we knew that rules were changing to make the ten year ticket run from hydraulic test our previous arrangement was ten years from steam test. This arrangement served us well without problem for the last twenty years. Fighting this decision was futile as by the time the situation was understood there was only a few months left to the expected withdrawal. We now re-hydraulic our boilers with lagging in place immediately before steam test to gain the full ten years of service. For No.143 though this meant a quiet and unmarked end to 9 years service following the outstanding efforts of Tony Williams and the Dinas team to put it in the best of order.

So in 2020 all attention went to completing No.130 whilst No.87 hauled the limited train service. Knowing that we urgently need a third Garratt in service to back up the other two we set about a plan to use the best parts of No.138 and No.143 to achieve a working loco as soon as possible. It is important to remember that most of our Garratts have seen parts interchanged over the years. We decided to take the completed boiler ex No.129 from Puffing Billy in place of the current boiler which was previously in No.140. The cradle frame from No.143 has been overhauled. It is the cradle frame which determines the number the loco carries. The power units under No.143 are fit for a further five years service. If pressed these units were to be deployed again. However we took the opportunity in 2020/21 to completely overhaul the very tired units from No.138. This included a new cylinder on the rear unit. Again due to the foresight of Tony Williams we had a new casting ready. The rear unit was brought to the loco in September 2020, the front unit should make the same journey from Boston Lodge this month.

The cladding, cab, bunker and tank from No.143 are all to be reused as they are all in good condition. There is a new smokebox with this boiler and largely new spark arrestor gear. The old SA parallel chimney is good to go again which means the casting for an original shape chimney on hand will be used on No.138. New steam pipes replace the very thin old ones. The loco will be painted in the Splendid Brunswick green livery carried in the previous ten years of operation whilst No.138 will carry LMS red.'

Main Line news 2/12/21

No.67008 failed on the 11:33 Holyhead-Cardiff on 2/12/21 and No.56096 was borrowed from the RHTT to rescue it from Rhyl. Furthermore No.67015 on the 11:22 Cardiff-Holyhead was cancelled for unexplained reasons at Chester and went forward as ECS.

Freightliner's recent driver training on the North Wales Coast was explained when No.66547 was noted on PW duties on 5/12/21 returning to Chester. The line had been closed west of Llandudno Junction for PW work.

Barmouth Bridge closed until 29/12/21

NR has apologised after investigations recently found additional timbers needed replacing in the 154 year old viaduct, currently being refurbished. Train services had been set to resume on 12/12/21 but will not now restart until 29/12/21 at the earliest (assuming no other critical problems are found). A further 3 month closure is intended next Autumn to complete the restoration of the Grade II* listed structure. See Cambrian News story. See NR statement. The Daily Post has images of the extent of the damage.

Pork barrel politics in Oswestry by-election 1/12/21

It seems the Tories are running scared of losing the North Shropshire seat in the by-election on 16/12/21 after the bookies showed the Lib Dem candidate running a close second. The by-election was brought about by the resignation of Tory MP Owen Patterson over concerns about his paid lobbying and the issue on the doorstep seems to be Tory sleaze in general. In a campaigning visit to support the Tory candidate, the Rail Minister suggested that an announcement about the electrification of the Wolverhampton-Shrewsbury line with through services to London could appear 'in the New Year'. He further suggested that following the current £50,000 Feasibility Study into reopening the remaindered Oswestry-Gobowen branch, the line could be reopened by 2024! This despite the need for a jacked box tunnel under the A5 to replace the existing level crossing!! The Lib Dem candidate has also given her support to reopening of the Oswestry branch and green transport solutions such as extending electrification of the rail network. See Shropshire Star report.

If the Oswestry project were to go ahead the branch would be operated by a TOC into a reconstituted bay platform at the north end of Oswestry station, keeping its services separate to the Cambrian Heritage Railways operation out of the main platforms. The rail route could possibly be operated as a shuttle from Gobowen bay platform using the new Class 230 Borderlands trains or as an extension of the enhanced Borderlands service with every other operating to Wrexham Central/Oswestry alternatively. Other possibilities include Chester-Oswestry or the new Liverpool-Chester service extended to Oswestry.

It is possible the Oswestry branch might be reopened in two phases with the first being Gobowen to Park Hall Halt where there is an orthopaedic hospital adjacent to the station. The Highways Authority will not allow reinstatement of the existing level crossing of the A5 used until 1988 by stone trains from Blodwel Quarry and this is the reason for the expensive jacked box tunnel under the trunk road. Other works include repairs to an underbridge and a busy level crossing just north Oswestry station into an industrial estate based on the former Cambrian Works and Depot.

A cynical view of the electors' options would be for the Lib Dems to win the by-election then the Tories would have to carry through their pork-barrel promises in order to win the seat back at the next General Election!

Will COVID Omicron variant affect WHR Winter services? (30/11/21)

While national rules for England are to start wearing masks again on public transport and in shops etc., Wales makes its own rules and these new restrictions are already in force. There are today 22 cases of Omicron across the UK and its appears to be rising rapidly as a result of the increased ease of transmissibility of this variant. Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford has already stated he will make a judgement in early December about any need to tighten restrictions in case of any developments such as a new variant or upsurge in cases. With the F&WHR having committed to Santa trains and Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services and running the cafe/pubs at Caernarfon and Porthmadog, any additional restrictions would be a blow. The Welsh and Scottish Governments are asking Boris Johnson to institute much stronger restrictions on returning foreign travellers to reduce the possibility of fuelling further rapid spread of Omicron in their countries. As expected the Tory Government refused to respond to the concerns of the Welsh and Scottish leaders.

Early school Xmas Holiday? (29/11/21)

Mark Drakeford (WAG First Minister), speaking to LBC on 29/11/21 admitted discussions were underway over further measures to reduce the fourth wave of COVID including the highly infectious Omicron variant which he said would inevitably soon turn up in Wales. As well as a schools' mask mandate, he was considering starting the Xmas holiday early to reduce transmission between children. The Senedd would be discussing other types of action it might take in early December to prevent hospitals being overwhelmed by COVID cases. Some of the measures could potentially affect retail/hospitality/tourist attractions etc. like the F&WHR.

Christmas Santa Specials booking well 29/11/21

Half of the 12 Santa Specials are already fully booked 2 weeks before the first train runs. Five of the six afternoon trains are now fully booked with only 22/12/21 available. However, in contrast five of the six morning trains are still available to book with only 19/12/21 fully booked. All 12 of the Christmas Glaslyn and 8 Christmas Cwellyn trains are still available to book. The WHR has benefitted from the cancellation of Santa Specials on the Llanberis Lake Railway this year.

Free Gwynedd car parking

Gwynedd Council car parks will be free 11-28/12/21 to encourage local shopping. This means that both Caernarfon and Porthmadog council car parks close to the F&WHR stations will have free parking. Sadly for people booked on Christmas Cwellyn the free period ends just before the four booked train run 29-31/12/21 and 1/1/22.

Spooner's Festive afternoon tea from 1/12/21

When Afternoon Teas were introduced by the Tea Room at Tan-y-Bwlch Station they were an instant hit. With the Tea Room closed at present, the tea room manager has moved down to Spooner's for the Winter season. The F&WHR is pleased, therefore, to bring visitors the news that she will now be preparing her popular Festive Afternoon Teas for Spooner's customers to enjoy. These will be available Tuesday to Sunday throughout December from 1/12/21. Costing £10.00 per person, they will include sandwiches, mince pies, scones and mini homemade cakes with tea/coffee. Please note - Festive Afternoon Teas cannot be booked on the day, as items are freshly baked/prepared for each reservation. Please book - at least 24 hours in advance - by phoning 01766 516032. Come along and treat yourselves to a relaxing afternoon tea in Spooner's - and get your festive celebrations off to a tasty start!

Storm Arwen wreaks havoc 27/11/21

Storm Arwen roared in over North Wales over the night of 26-27/11/21 bringing down trees and power lines. Electricity was cut off in the Porthmadog area until 4pm. There was snow on the Crimea Pass and gritter/snow ploughs were out keeping the mountain passes open. Some North Wales Coast trains were cancelled due to high winds including the 10:34 to Birmingham International and there was bustitution to Holyhead (presumably for planned PW works). The Conwy Valley line was running to an amended timetable. The F&WHR may have received some storm damage.

Castell Caernarfon progress 26/11/21

The long sidelined WHR Funkey Castell Caernarfon has now received its new steel cab to replace the previous fibreglass version. Hopefully the much needed loco will be back in service in 2022.

Adventure Week April 2003

During Adventure week 24-30/5/03 Linda, in lined black livery, was moved by low loader to the F&WHR and hauled trains over several days. The loco coped admirably with her load of five coaches (2 opens, a saloon, the FR's Obs/Brake 3rd- No.11 and WHR No.23) and could be heard chuffing all the way from Dinas to Tryfan Junction! In fact the driver was keen to take 6 coaches!!

Linda was required for driver experience courses on the FR on Saturday 31/5/03 and was withdrawn from WHR service at Dinas at 1230 on Friday after working the first train of the day. This was normally worked by No.138. No.143 took over Linda's diagram for the rest of the day. Linda was soon on the low loader and was safely back on FR metals by the afternoon. The chimney was capped and lagged during transit to prevent the cool air draft stressing the still hot boiler too much. These views are bracketed by slides with known dates from a sunny 26/5/03 and a dull 28/5/03 and so are either late afternoon of 26/5/03 or 27/5/03.

Caernarfon Christmas Market 27-28/11/21

The Christmas Market in Caernarfon is a two-day event taking place this weekend in the new units on Cei Llechi (the Slate Quay) and in Y Stesion - the Welsh Highland Railway's station building. There's a fantastic range of stalls with a wide variety of products and produce. So come along and support this new venture - and have a look at the striking new development on Caernarfon's waterfront. Of course, 'Caffi de Winton/De Winton Cafe' will be open as usual for you to take a break from your Christmas shopping. Check out the Marchnad Nadolig Cei Llechi Christmas Market' Facebook page for more information. In previous years the F&WHR might have operated special trains in association with special events like this.

WAG revisits Aberystwyth-Carmarthen rail project (24/11/21)

With the Bangor-Afonwen/Aberystwyth-Carmarthen rail link in the Welsh political news again it is interesting that the previous Feasibility Study into the Aberystwyth-Carmarthen reopening originally produced 19/9/18 has been updated very recently on 24/11/21. However, a check of the documents so far does not show any revisions.

Garratt update 24/11/21

Paul Lewin (F&WHR General Manager) writes: NGG16 No.138 doesn’t feature in our news very much at present. It was withdrawn for its ten year overhaul a few years ago and the pandemic meant that No.143 leapfrogged No.138 in the overhaul queue as it needs less work. This year with help from Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri/ Welsh Highland Railway Society we have made good progress with both engines. No.138's power units, now heavily overhauled, will see service under No.143 next. The boiler from Puffing Billy No.129 goes to No.143 also. The boiler No.7017 ex No.143 in 2009 will now see service with No.138 and is progressing well at Israel Newton’s. A new Bunker for No.138 is nearing completion at Brunswick Iron Works. The old water tank had rotted through prompting replacement. We expect to paint new bunker for No.138 at BL in the New Year and it will continue to appear in LMS red.

This Brunswick Ironworks (Caernarfon) view (24/11/21) shows No.138's new water tank under construction. It will soon be transported to Boston Lodge for painting red in the New Year. Labour and Plaid agree on West Wales rail link

Nation Cymru report that the price of Plaid supporting Labour in the Senedd will be moving forwards with the Bangor-Carmarthen North-South Wales rail link which uses the old trackbed between Bangor-Afon Wen and between Aberystwyth-Carmarthen. The Bangor-Afonwen proposal is currently part of North Wales Metro plans. For full details see Nation Cymru website.

FR Diesel Gala 21/10/01

It's been a while since there was a diesel gala on the F&WHR but back in 2001 the FR put on a good show despite the weather not being as good as SuperPower. Maybe the F&WHR should revisit the event when they have put Castell Caernarfon back together and include the WHR this time?

F&WHR 'Black Friday' deals

The F&WHR webshop is offering free postage on all sales from 26/11/21 to 2/12/21. They are also offering 5% of the price of the book 'Railway to Adventure'.

WHR Santa specials booking fast

People wishing to book the WHR Santa Specials are advised to do so early as with the Llanberis Railway cancelling their Santa operation this year, Gwynedd residents only have the WHR Santa Special option or the Porthmadog Santa Grotto. Trains operate at 09:15 and 13:00 with a 3.5 hour return journey from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu on 11-12/12/21, 18-19/12/21 and 22-23/12/21. Although the F&WHR website states that the 'duration is 3.5 hours' it is actually 2.75 hours as 45 minutes is allocated for checking in and collecting hampers before departure. So the 09:15 departs at 10:00 and the 1300 departs at 13:45. This allows about an hour layover at Rhyd Ddu for Santa and the elves to attend to children and the loco to run round and be watered. Already four of the six afternoon trains are sold out on 12th, 18th, 19th and 23/12/21! A Christmas Hamper is provided as part of this festive offering for each family with drinks, mince pies and a Christmas Cracker. Presents are provided for all children 0-15.

All of the Festive Season trains over the New Year period are still available to book with both the Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn operating various dates in December and New Year's Day. The Christmas Cwellyn runs two trains a day over four days 29/12/21-1/1/22 at 10:45 and 13:45 Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu. The Christmas Glaslyn runs two trains a day at 10:50/14:15 from Porthmadog to Beddgelert on 18th, 19th, 22nd, 30th, 31/12/21 and 1/1/22.

The Caffi de Winton will be open before the Christmas Cwellyn departs for passengers to pick up some Xmas fare (no refreshment service on train). The 2½ hour service includes time for a run round at Rhyd Ddu and photos. Spooners will be open before the 2¼ hour Christmas Glaslyn round trip for purchase of Xmas fare (again no refreshment service on board) which allows a few minutes at Beddgelert for the train to run round and photos before a 'leisurely' fuel saving ride back to Porthmadog.

Spooner's Italian night 25/11/21

Thursday 25/11/21 sees Italian Night at Spooner's with buffet food available from 17:00 until 20:00 priced at £9.95 or £11.95 with a drink.

Spooner's Sunday Carvery 21/11/21

Despite the appearance of being a closed building site with scaffolding Spooner's is actually open (Mondays excepted). The popular Sunday Carvery has returned for the Autumn/Winter season from 21/11/21. You can't beat a traditional Sunday Roast dinner, especially when you don't have to cook it yourself! So why not take it easy on a Sunday - come to Spooner's and let the F&WHR look after you! Carvery served between 12:00 and 16:00. Phone the F&WHR on 01766 516032 to reserve a table.

Gwili Railway receives Class 43 powercar (20/11/21)

The Gwili Railway, based on the old Carmarthen-Aberystwyth route, will receive an HST powercar, the first to be donated to a Welsh railway. Porterbrook has given HST power car, No.43056 Royal British Legion to the Welsh Railways Trust, which is based at Bronwydd Arms on the Gwili Railway, just north of Carmarthen. After several months cosmetic restoration it will be put on show at Easter 2022. Hopefully this presages a more accepting view towards heritage diesels by the Gwili Railway which rarely makes its Class 03 available for public use.

EAG meeting 9/12/21

Stephen Sullivan reports:

'One of the pleasures of the East Anglian Group meetings at the Six Bells, 9 High Street Fulbourn (Cambridge) CB21 5DH, is the opportunity to enjoy a meal together in the restaurant from about 6pm. As it has done in previous years, the Six Bells is offering a special festive menu from 29/11/21, and it may well be that members may wish to order from that menu for our meeting on THURSDAY 9/12/21 (note that as usual, the December meeting is the second Thursday of the month, not the third). To order from the menu you should check the pub website or Telephone: 01223 880244. It would be a good idea to say that you belong to 'the railway group' so that they don't sit us all in different places, and that you will be dining between 6pm (or arrival) and 8pm. The price is given on the Menu, but takes a bit of finding: £17.99 for two courses, £20.99 for three. It is not clear to me, but it is likely, that the normal menu will be available without any special reservation.

The meeting itself is called 'Members Slides', although technology has moved on! You are invited to bring a USB stick with photographs or video of railway interest - and please don't hold back! It may be the festive meal beforehand, but this is one of our meetings that almost always over-runs the 10pm end-time. Please contact Richard Watson if you have any special requirements or questions.'

Main line news 20/11/21

No.67010 hauled a special working on Saturday 20/11/21 from Holyhead. It seems the loco is usually on the east end from Holyhead in recent times and on the rear from Chester to Cardiff as it reverse at Chester to use The Marches route via Wrexham. There is often a Saturday stock movement to Crewe for weekly maintenance purposes that is used as a service train rather than operating as an ECS.

The Jolly Slateman railtour ran on 20/11/21 with three green heritage diesel locos (this livery has been absent from BR for over 50 years-its seems to be LSL's policy not to use blue BR locos sadly). D8096 (20096) with D8107 (20107) were nose to nose and D6851 (37667) led into Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Class 37 went on the back on the return and detached at Llandudno Junction to follow light engine as the Llandudno run round is not adequately track circuited for long excursions these days by some accident of NR design. The Class 37 was on the rear from Llandudno Junction back to Derby having followed light engine from Llandudno.

The Rail Head Treatment Train 3S71 was commandeered for rescue duties on 20/11/21 after failing with water jet issues at Rhyl on the westbound run. However, 6M76 on the heavy Margam to Shotton steel coil train had come to a stand on the steep gradient between Pen-y-ffordd and Buckley. The Class 56s (Nos.56078/96) top and tailing the RHTT worked back to Chester, Wrexham and then up the Borderlands Line to assist the failed freight over the Buckley summit.

Will Welsh COVID passes affect F&WHR 18/11/21?

Mark Drakeford, the Welsh First Minister, announced on 18/11/21 that he was considering extending the use of Welsh COVID passes. The Gwynedd outbreak has been one of the highest in the UK. Currently COVID digital passes on smart phones are required for anyone over 18 attending large public events such as cinemas, theatres, concert halls and night clubs. In early December WAG will decide if it should be extended to pubs and restaurants such as Spooners and the Caffi de Winton (De Winton Cafe) at Y Stesion, Caernarfon. The move is unlikely to affect WHR Santa Special train services and the Christmas Cwellyn/Glaslyn services.

Main Line update 17-28/11/21

The North Wales Coast line seemed to have been forgotten over the weekend by TfW with the advertised service largely abandoned on Sunday 28/11/21 following Storm Arwen leading to more accusations that the organisation is focussed on South Wales.

PW work at the weekend saw the Llandudno Junction-Holyhead service bustituted. Class 70 No.70014 ran training trips Holyhead to Llandudno Junction on 17/11/21 and was followed by 66506 the following day in preparation for the PW work.

Harlech Castle 14-18/11/21

With the line now split for PW work it appears that Harlech Castle was allocated to duties based on Tan-y-bwlch or Glan-y-pwll and outstabled. On the 14/11/21 it was involved in the Drain Train and on the 18/11/21 worked around Dduallt with the cherry picker.

This westerly view 14/11/21 shows Harlech Castle on the Drain Train. The train also picked up laundry from Coed-y-bleiddiau which is part of the rental agreement along with ferrying people to and from the cottage via this one coach platform. Steam back at Llangollen 14/11/21

Steam was back in action at Llangollen on 14/11/21 in the form of No.3802, back from tyre turning at WCR Carnforth, for the end of the Autumn season. On Remembrance Sunday the loco carried The Remembrance headboard and a wreath. The 13:15 departure to Carrog was formed of 4 suburban coaches and retimed to accommodate the Remembrance service in Llangollen. Some supporters are wondering when the Mk1 TSO coach sets will appear again. The train was blessed with sunshine and autumn colours as the leaves turned orange. Winter Service trains resume with Santa Specials from 4/12/21 and Mince Pie specials 27-28/12/21 and 3-4/1/22. See new Llangollen website for full details.

Coast Line problems 10-15/11/21

It appears that WalesRail (aka TfW) is having Class 67 loco availability problems as several recent loco hauled Holyhead-Cardiff trains have been substituted by DMUs or turned back mid journey. This maybe because so few locos have been adapted to work with the Mark 4 coach sets and the remedy might lie in  TfW converting additional Class 67s? All 6 trains ran normally on 9/11/21 but on 10/11/21 the loco hauled 05:33 from Holyhead was terminated at Chester and went ECS to Crewe, presumably for attention. On Friday 12/11/21 train 1W96, the 17:16 from Cardiff, was loco hauled to Shrewsbury (the previous legs of the diagram having been worked by DMUs) where it swapped sets with a DMU on 1V98 in order to get back to Cardiff. All the other loco hauled trains that day were DMU substitutions. Again on 15/11/21, only one loco hauled set was in traffic. This rather spoiled the gentle introduction of the restaurant service on these loco hauled sets.

SuperPower 2001 (22/9/01)

SuperPower 2001 took place quite late in September over the weekend of 21-23/9/21. Prince was present and ran short Heritage trains, sometimes paired with Taliesin which also hauled Heritage trains on its own too. The Heritage Train operation presaged the two train Eryri Express/Heritage trains of the peak 2002 timetable which also ran unadvertised in the Spring Bank Holiday period. Lilla ran footplate rides in Dinas Yard on the Sunday. No.138, in its short lived apple green livery, was the Garratt on duty.

Wylfa B under discussion again

The BBC reported 1/10/21 that the Prime Minister has set in motion discussions to choose a new contractor to build Wylfa B Nuclear Power station and reduce dependence of the UK on coal for continuous baseload electric supply. The previous Japanese contractor pulled out earlier this year but a new funding proposal has attracted two serious bidders. The power station proposed by Bechtel will be much more powerful than Wylfa A and require a duplicate Super Grid connection. An alternative is to use SMRs (see story below) and a wind farm that will obviously employ a lot less people. If Wylfa B does get built it will mean reactivation of the Valley Nuclear Electric siding and GBRf's North Wales freight again. The move is probably partly to protect the future of the Tory MP for Anglesey. See BBC story.

Carriage Works update 13/11/21

NWNGR replica No.24 has come into the Carriage Works for a repaint and attention to wood rot in the end gutters. The vehicle was scrubbed down to remove grease and grime before sanding down. Observation Car No.150 in also in receiving attention with the curved glass end removed to be used as a template for a new one. There is also some rot to be dealt with in the end next to the emergency door. Boston Lodge shunter Moel-y-gest is in the paint shop after receiving mechanical attention. No.143's cab is also slowly being prepared for a repaint. Meanwhile the new FR Super Saloon No.808 is making good progress and looks to be structurally complete. The number 808 is supposed to look like BoB to celebrate the donor Bob Bloodworth who left a legacy allowing its construction.

WMWP 2021-2022

The Winter Major Works Programme has now been decided. Some additional works have had to be accommodated as although the WHR route is open again at Plas-y-nant, following the end of season flooding, it will require remedial works before passenger trains can run.

The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways Infrastructure Department have introduced a progressive Autumn & Winter maintenance plan. The plan is in response to both the Pandemic restrictions assigned to the railway and its need to run services in order to create a robust revenue stream. Both of the railways have been operating very well, however, it has been noted that an extensive maintenance plan is essential to maintain routine work and also to catch up on improvements prevented by the pandemic. The essential maintenance plan will see the laying of new track, signals and telegraph works as well as improvement work to buildings.

The most arduous part of the maintenance work will be the re-railing and re-sleepering of stretches of track between Tan-y-bwlch which is the Ffestiniog’s halfway station, and Rhiw Goch, which features an essential passing loop. The same procedures will also be required between Rhiwplas Bridge where the main road between Porthmadog and Dolgellau, the A487, crosses the railway, and Boston Lodge.

The sleepers being used are sustainably made from plastic which has been recycled from plastic milk bottles and have a much longer life span than regular wooden sleepers. The environmentally friendly sleepers save valuable hardwoods being used and also look very similar to their traditional wooden counterpart. They can also be recycled when they reach end of life.

This easterly view at Rhiwplas Bridge 3/11/21 shows a visit of technicians from the Centre for Advanced Transport Engineering & Research who have undertaken B Scan ultrasonic testing of the area to be relaid this month. Analysis of the data collected by them will help the F&WHR decide whether these 1942 vintage rails need replacement. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to expand fully where available. This image was taken on a digital camera and is copyright Alex Spring (F&WHR).

The Signals and Telegraph (S&T) Department will be working at Tan y Bwlch to make the “run round” safer. This work will see improvements carried out at the Porthmadog end of the station and will mean that the token will no longer be needed to complete the “run round”, with other work including the installation of a wrong line departure signal and improvements to track circuiting. Further work being undertaken by the S&T Department will see work at Rhiw Goch installing a mains electrical cable from Rhiw Goch Farm Crossing and will improve the power supply along with a fibre optic cable which will upgrade the signal box’s IT capability.

The Buildings Department will carry out work in the Harbour station dealing with water leaks and scaffolding will need to be put in place whilst the work is carried out. Harbour station will also undergo general maintenance to keep up the high standards of the facilities. Following the Company Board’s decision on how next years' train service will operate, improvements will be made to the facilities at Beddgelert and Tan y Bwlch. However, in the longer term Beddgelert really needs a proper station building on the foundation constructed during Phase 4.

Due to prolific vegetation growth, lineside maintenance is a continual issue causing scratch damage to rolling stock and creating unnecessary work for the Carriage Department. When the Welsh Highland trains have stopped running in January, considerable efforts will be prioritised (weather permitting) on the section between Caernarfon and Dinas and once complete will move onto the section between Dinas and Waunfawr. Meanwhile, work on the vegetation management on the Festiniog will see the protection of the pole route and the opening up of viewing windows through woodland.

The FR is now closed since the daily service has finished and it will not re-open until March 2022 to allow this work to be carried out. However, there will be train services on the WHR from Caernarfon and Porthmadog, including Santa Trains and the post-Xmas Christmas Cwellyn trains.

Tan-y-bwlch tent 10/11/21

The gazebo style waiting room at the east end of Tan-y-bwlch station was taken down on 10/11/21 as train services have now stopped. The tent was erected in the Spring as both the Mountain Prince and Woodland Wanderer trains had an hour layover at Tan-y-bwlch built into their schedules for passengers to use the facilities. It was demolished by a storm shortly after building but was re-erected a few days later and survived the occasional gale since then. The tent was given seats and tables to allow a further seated area for passengers awaiting their return service.

Trawsfynydd nuclear power station plans?

Rolls Royce has won government backing along with private risk capital to develop SMR technology. These small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) are only 480MW and can be mass produced making them cheaper than large reactors 10 times their output. Each can run continuously unlike wind turbines, which many say despoil the rural environment. Some 16 sites are envisaged including sites such as Trawsfynydd with good existing national grid connections. Each can replace 150 onshore wind turbines. Components could be delivered by road and rail and the nuclear waste removed by rail as previously from Trawsfynydd (requiring restoration of the Blaenau Ffestiniog-Trawsfynydd branch). See BBC news story.

Final day of photoshoot 6/11/21

It was a rest and recuperation day for those on the full charter, but there was an option for participants on 6/11/21 for a return journey along the WHR with a meal at Waunfawr.

All change on Funkey transmissions

Following the failure of the Vale of Ffestiniog's transmission earlier this year, the identical transmission from Castell Caernarfon was swopped in to keep one heavy duty diesel loco running as the WHR's Funkey is under long term overall. The FR Funkey's transmission was being fitted during the Autumn and the WHR Funkey's removed and sent away for the same treatment so that Castell Caernarfon will work perfectly when reassembled next year. It is intended that Vale of Ffestiniog will be used for Winter Works Programme trains and standby loco for the Winter service trains. Castell Caernarfon's stainless steel cab has been formed and the sheets tack welded together but little progress can be seen compared to earlier updates. The existing control cubicles will be refitted soon.

The photocharter participants slowly made their way from Port to Rhyd Ddu with Merddin Emrys stopping off at Nantmor, Bryn-y-Felin and a further stop north of Beddgelert. Then they had the K1 and No.87 on a combined freight at Rhyd Ddu, before the goods split and run pasts with the K1 and Merddin Emrys at the old sea wall (north of Ynysfor l/c).

FR Winter closures

Now that the Autumn train services have finished there have been some changes to the opening arrangements for our main Booking Office and Gift Shop at Porthmadog. The Booking Office will be open on weekdays (from 09:30-16:30) for enquiries and assistance with ticket purchases, but will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The shop is now closed, to allow for stock-taking and an upgrade to the EPOS system. However, the shop will open for those dates in December where trains are running. Of course, the web shop remains available - so make sure to visit festrail.co.uk/shop for a range of gifts, souvenirs, books, DVDs and modelling supplies.

Tan-y-Bwlch cafe is also now closed.

WHR photoshoot 4-5/11/21

It seems attention shifted to the WHR on Thursday with trains arriving back in Porthmadog in the late afternoon. Welsh Pony and David Lloyd George headed to Rhyd Ddu with passenger stock and various trains were run from Glan-yr-afon to Rhyd Ddu including a double header with  K1 and Garratt No.87 hauling a freight or singly. The double headed freight made it to Porthmadog. for images of Thursday's WHR photoshoot see Friends of the F&WHR Facebook page.

Merddin Emrys was steamed for the photographers special on 5/11/21 and ran round the rake in the WHR platform to couple up at 08:24 as photographers started to arrive. The train departed towards Beddgelert at 08:44.

FR photoshoot 3/11/21

It was a rainy morning at Porthmadog but the weather was forecast to be sunny in the afternoon. It seemed that photoshoot activity was focussed on the FR again. All three webcams were back in action today.

Harlech Castle was on lineside PW duties and was held in a rather wet Tan-y-bwlch loop while David Lloyd George arrived from Porthmadog at 11:15 with a long simulated passenger train. That train left towards Dduallt at 11:23. Harlech Castle had left by midday with the Mess Car and PW wagons.

It seems that Mountaineer was not quite up to the full load and so had diesel support over the Bank Holiday as on 16/4/01 it was also noted with Conwy Castle at Waunfawr. At Waunfawr, Conwy Castle was left on the rear for ease of shunting at Dinas on the last train of the day. Earlier on Bank Holiday Monday I had taken a ride from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog and return behind Vale of Ffestiniog on the 12:45, passing Blanche in black livery at Tan-y-bwlch.

Santas appear!

With just six weeks to go before the first WHR Santa trains 17/12/21 (see story below) Santa and Xmas Specials have finally appeared on the F&WHR FareHarbor booking page. There will be 09:15 and 13:00 Santa Trains from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu on 11-12/12/21, 18-19/12/21 and 22-23/12/21. The   standard fare is £22.50 for adults and children (babies less than 1 year old £3). The fare includes a hamper and presents for the children and babies from Santa. Gold fares for the Pullman or Observation car are £32.50 (babies £3) and the journey takes 3.5 hours for the round trip.

The FR is having a Santa's Grotto at Porthmadog on 18-19, 22/12/21. Children £4/5 according to age. It is possible Santa may be shunted around the station as in previous years. The webpage allows you to book a timeslot.

Xmas trains 18/12/21-1/1/22

The Xmas Glaslyn is a 2¼ hour trip Porthmadog to Beddgelert and is offered on 18-19, 21, 30-31/12/21 and 1/1/22 departing twice a day at 10:50 and 13:00 (18/12/21 pm train is currently shown as 14:15). Compartment stock is used with the same COVID compliant arrangements £60 for a compartment for 2 and £30 additional adults up to maximum 6 per compartment. Gold travel is £100/£50 with children £25 and Observation car travel is £110/£50/£25.

The Xmas Cwellyn is a 2½ hour round trip to Rhyd Ddu and back from Caernarfon running 29-31/12/21 and 1/1/22 twice a day departing at 10:45 and 13:45 with compartment stock as above. Fares are the same as the Xmas Glaslyn.

The F&WHR has produced an Xmas website covering all its Xmas activities including shop and cafe opening times. In these times of global warming snow cannot be guaranteed but Snowdon and the other peaks usually have a covering when these trains are booked to run!

Photo charter week 1/11/21

Sunday 31/10/21 was the last day of our Autumn train services, but there are still some trains to be seen on the railway. This week the F&WHR is hosting a series of photo-charters - so, if a train on the webcams it will be one of the special trains the F&WHR is running. The timetable depends on the photographers wishes and the influence of the weather conditions. Only the Tan-y-bwlch webcam was active on 1/11/21 due to faults on the others presumably after the heavy rain recently. The first couple of days seemed to be focussed on the FR.

Activities seem to have centred on the FR on the last two days. Click on the YouTube link to watch 5 minutes 39 seconds of video showing Lilla shunting skips in the Dduallt area while simulated passenger trains pass.

Scanning restarts

As Autumn turns into Winter your webmaster's thoughts turn to scanning again. There are still 25 film strips to scan from 2001-2002, some slides from Prince Charles visit and then the awkward sorting of Samsung Digimax images 2002-2004 from CF cards. The problem with Samsung camera was that without an internal battery the camera image numbers do not advance but restart every time at 0001! Furthermore I was often careless about the date stamp so there is a lot of matching to do against the dated published construction images in this period to get the photos into the right order. As a taster of what will be published in the coming weeks here is an image from February 2001.

F&WHR traffic 31/10/21

Porthmadog saw stormy weather on Sunday with occasional thunderstorms forecast and heavy rain with a maximum temperature of 11C forecast. The three Woodland Wanderer trains ran as predicted. Sadly both the Porthmadog and Minffordd webcams were out of action today.

Lyd was on the 11:05 and Blanche followed it up with the 12:10 arriving at Tan-y-bwlch in heavy rain at 12:55. Lyd then returned to Porthmadog for the 14:20. When the 14:20 arrived back in Porthmadog at about 16:45 that was the end of the season as the F&WHR has announced it's Winter Shutdown (see below).

These were the last trains of the season but as the WHR Society has been given the go ahead to run Santa trains in December out of Caernarfon (see below) it might be expected the F&WHR would run some trains out of Porthmadog on the WHR, the FR being unavailable due to major PW works.

F&WHR traffic 30/10/21

Saturday was a blustery sunny day in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 12C.  With the cancellation of the Snowdonia Star due to flooding on the WHR only the 11:05/12:10/14:20 Woodland Wanderer trains were running on the FR. The 14:20 was still bookable just before departure. Heavy rainfall had also caused flooding in the Severn tunnel and, nearer by, a landslip at Morfa Nefyn. The Conwy Valley Railway was also said to be bustituted but was back in service on Saturday.

Lyd hauled the 11:05 and the 14:20, which departed a few minutes late at 14:23, passing the returning 12:10 at Minffordd. Unusually the Porthmadog webcam failed in the afternoon. Blanche and Lyd have been hauling the Woodland Wanderer for a few weeks now.

Sunday's services are identical to Saturdays, and are the final service trains this season due the self imposed Winter Shutdown (see below) unlike other local railways the Tal-y-llyn and the Llangollen, both of which show services for the next three months. All Sunday's trains were bookable at the end of Saturday.

Llangollen Diesel Weekend (29-31/10/21)

Due to tyre turning work on GWR 2-8-0 No.3802 at Carnforth taking a little longer than expected, the Llangollen Railway has another impromptu diesel weekend ahead and this time has turned it into something special. This will see A1A Locomotives Limited's superb Railfreight liveried Class 31 No.31271 in use on both Friday 29/10/21 and Saturday 30/10/21 and the Llangollen's own 1959-built green liveried Sulzer Type 2 Class 26 No.5310 on Sunday 31/10/21. The Class 104/108 hybrid DMU will also be out on Saturday and Sunday. Class 08 No.08195 will work a new Llangollen-Berwyn Shuttle on both Saturday 30/10/21 and Sunday 31/10/21, hauling the LNER pigeon van brake and a covered, seated open wagon, departing Llangollen at 10:55, 12:25, 13:40 and 15:50, offering a shorter journey and the chance to sample something a little different. Day Rover tickets are valid for the shuttle or a separate shuttle-only fare is available.

The Llangollen Railway has taken a tip from the F&WHR and purchased the FareHarbor software that runs the F&WHR's booking website. However, unlike the F&WHR, it is using all its options for intermediate journeys (excepting the little used Deeside Loop). The Llangollen Railway Timetable and ticket details (including online booking) are now available at the railway's revamped website -https://llangollen-railway.co.uk/. The Llangollen Railway is offering trains throughout the second week of Half Term (unlike so far the F&WHR) as well as trains over the weekend of 13-14/11/21. Unlike the F&WHR it is offering a whole range of single and return fares between all its stations and basically a 'hop on-hop off' service if you buy the Day Rover.

The Llangollen Santa trains run over 9 days, 3 times a day, between 4/12/21 and 24/12/21. Mince Pie Specials run over 4 days, 3 times a day, on 27-28/12/21 and 3-4/1/22. It seems the new management at the Llangollen Railway, many of whom come from the Diesel Group, is doing its best to revive the railway as a tourist attraction by offering all the old favourites and some new ideas too!

WHR centenary 2022/3.

The Centenary of the Welsh Highland Railway will take place in 2023 and the; ‘Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways’, ‘Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri’, ‘Welsh Highland Railway Heritage Group’ and the ‘Welsh Highland Heritage Railway’ will be working together to organise the celebrations. The Centenary will be celebrated during 2022 and 2023, with events acknowledging key dates. Further details will be announced in due course.

Let us hope that as part of this Russell will be allowed to traverse the whole length of the WHR (Beddgelert-Rhyd Ddu still not traversed) and the WHHR's Baldwin renumbered to represent No.590 will be ready too, if not the example stored at the F&WHR.

Some suggested events are First Sod Day, Reopening of NWNGR section, Opening of Full Line.

WHR Santa trains December dates confirmed

The good news is that the WHR Society (WHRS) has been given permission to run Santa Trains this year and is hoping that members can help the railway this year as they did in 2019. Everyone has missed having the fun and enjoyment of the Santa Trains last year but now they are back. There are a few changes to how they were previously run, mainly in order to minimise the risk with regard to Covid-19 but the trains will run as previously from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu.

The scheduled dates are 11-12/12/21, 18-19/12/21 and 22-23/12/21 but do not yet appear on the F&WHR's booking page. Not all these dates will be available to book to begin with, as we need to maximise our income by ensuring that every train that runs is full. If there is a demand, two trains per day as in 2019 will be run, and additional days added as well. It would be very helpful with planning the service to know volunteer availability on the above dates so please let the WHRS know if members are willing to help and when by emailing dthomas@crhe.uk.

As soon as it is known that a train will be running, the WHRS will confirm with prospective volunteers. Elves will be needed to help Santa and also hosts at Caernarfon station and on the train. Importantly, to make the whole thing work a cleaning gang is also needed.

Last two days of season!

It appears the F&WHR is going ahead with its Winter Shut Down despite other local railways running trains in November December and even January. Saturday's final run of the Snowdonia Star from Caernarfon has been cancelled too because of the continued Plas-y-nant flooding! Alternatives such as running top and tailed to Plas-y-nant and back to Caernarfon with a partial refund do not appear to have been considered. Apparently, water in the Afon Gwyrfai is much higher than normal and the line is under water at a couple of locations beyond Plas-y-nant. Once water levels have fallen, the track will need inspecting before trains can run over this section.

F&WHR announcement

There are just two days of trains left before we start our Winter Shutdown, so don't miss the opportunity for one last train ride this year... We have three Woodland Wanderer trains running on Saturday and Sunday - departing Porthmadog at 11:05, 12:10 and 14:20. Come along for a round-trip to Tan-y-Bwlch with its Tea Room and Woodland Walks. The BBC weather forecast for Saturday shows "Sunny intervals and a moderate breeze" between 10:00 and 18:00 - timed to perfection to match our train journeys. For more information - and to book tickets visit festrail.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you here..!

F&WHR traffic 28/10/21

Porthmadog was forecast for a rainy grey but mild day with a maximum of 15C. The traffic lights had gone from The Cob but work was still underway on the Premier Inn visual splay. Due to recent heavy rain the line was flooded at Plas-y-nant which led to the cancellation of the final day of the Gelert Explorer. This might also affect the WHR services on 29-30/10/21. It seems unlikely the train will run on an alternative day as the rake is in use on Snowdonia Star on Saturday but passengers who came to stay in the area to travel on the train must be disappointed that the train could not run on Friday instead. The Woodland Wanderer was fully booked today as was the Back to Blaenau train and the Glaslyn Venturer.

This northerly view 28/10/21 shows the WHR flooded at Plas-y-nant just south of the halt. This area has received flood alleviation work in the past and it is disappointing to see the dip across the marsh still gets flooding when heavy rains fall.. It is currently unknown if there were other issues that prevented the final Gelert Explorer running that might affect the final two through trains on the WHR on Friday and Saturday. Click on the image to enlarge. This image is copyright Paul Lewin (F&WHR) and was taken on a digital camera.

Blanche was waiting in the FR platform at 10:55 for the 11:05 departure, while David Lloyd George arrived with headlight shining in the gloom. The final Back to Blaenau ECS into the WHR platform. The Fairlie completed its run round with a couple of minutes to spare before Blanche was given a green signal and departed at 11:07. Lyd arrived back from the 10:00 Woodland Wanderer just before No.130 arrived with the morning Glaslyn Venturer at 13:00. Both locos ran round their trains ready for their next services and Lyd left on time at 13:20 and No.130 at 13:43. Blanche arrived back at 13:45 for the final run of the day at 14:20.

Services reduce on Friday 29/10/21 with just the four Woodland Wanderer services operating and the final run of the 09:40 Harbourmaster (assuming the WHR is open again after flooding). The first three Woodland Wanderer trains are fully booked. Saturday sees the final Snowdonia Star (again assuming no further WHR flooding) and the reduced Woodland Wanderer with just 3 trains planned by dropping the 10:00 service. The timetable does not suggest any F&WHR trains at all in November despite the nearby neighbours the Tal-y-llyn and the Llangollen Railway running many trains in November, December and early January.

Tan-y-bwlch tearoom late season opening

Following the current end of season trains on 31/10/21, the Tan-y-bwlch tea room will be open 3-5/11/21 from 10:00-16:00 for the extended Half Term holiday traffic. The tearoom will then close from 6/11/21 until the start of the new season in the Spring.

Amlwch and Oswestry

Both the Gaerwen-Amlwch Branch and the Gobowen-Oswestry branch have been identified as potential reopening candidates in the Budget in the third round of projects. These are both in Tory held constituencies! See Government announcement and the list of successful bids for further study.

F&WHR traffic 27/10/21

Wednesday at Porthmadog was forecast to have rainy weather with a maximum temperature of 16C. Services this Half Term were very busy today with the four Woodland Wanderer trains, Back to Blaenau, Gelert Explorer and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer fully booked. Traffic lights were still present on The Cob for the Premier Inn entrance splay works.

Blanche hauled the 10:00 Woodland Wanderer and No.130 the Glaslyn Venturer departing on time. With the WHR platform line clear, David Lloyd George prepared the Back to Blaenau set and Lyd the 11:05 Woodland Wanderer both of which left on time and fully booked. At 13:15 Blanche was departing Porthmadog on the 13:15 Woodland Wanderer and No.130 was in the yard preparing to haul the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer which was stabled in the WHR platform.

Thursday's trains also look busy with 3 of the 4 Woodland Wanderer services already sold out. Services are beginning to wind down after Thursday, which is the final day of the Glaslyn Venturer, the Back to Blaenau and the Gelert Explorer. Friday sees the final Harbourmaster service and Saturday the final Snowdonia Star, which is unusual as these two trains both normally operate on the same day passing at Rhyd Ddu. Sunday 31/10/21 is the end of the season with services reduced to just 3 Woodland Wanderer trains on both Saturday and Sunday currently by cutting out the 10:00 service.

It seems that the F&WHR is not copying the example of the Tal-y-llyn and offering trains every weekend until Xmas. The Llangollen Railway has followed suit with Santa and Mince Pie Specials (see story below). With COVID cases growing again, maybe the F&WHR management knows something the TR and LR, Severn Valley Railway etc....don't??

F&WHR traffic 26/10/21

Half Term has seen holidaymakers return to Porthmadog for a last chance holiday before winter. The weather forecast was for cloudy weather and 16C maximum. The Woodland Wanderer was fully booked today despite offering 4 trains. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was back in action this week . Traffic lights for the Premier Inn visual splay still caused jams on The Cob. This afternoon's Glaslyn Venturer was still bookable.

Blanche was at Tan-y-bwlch with the 11:05 at midday and had shunted the rake into the westbound platform whilst awaiting the 11:40 Back to Blaenau to pass. This passed Tan-y-bwlch at 12:20 in the hands of David Lloyd George. Lyd hauled the 10:00 Woodland Wanderer and arrived back in Porthmadog at 12:39 ready for the 13:20. No.130 arrived at 12:55 with the Glaslyn Venturer. The two locos ran round at 13:00. The same three locos worked on Monday.

Still awaiting an announcement on Winter services 26/10/21!

Despite a management meeting last week to decide the issue the F&WHR has not announced any Winter services of any description or any extension into the second week of Half Term (1-7/11/21). This is despite the neighbouring railways doing so, including the Tal-y-llyn and the Llangollen. The Tal-y-llyn is running trains every weekend until Xmas and Tinsel & Turkey Trains, Santa Specials and Festive Steam for the whole post-Xmas school holiday from 26/12/21-5/1/22. The TR's early advertising for these trains makes the F&WHR lack of any advertising at all for winter trains look like it is not seizing market opportunities. See Tal-y-llyn timetable.

Sunday ash train 24/10/21

Lilla and Hugh Napier hauled SAR B wagons with loco ash to Dduallt for landscaping the inside of the loop. A single ex SAR B wagon B2925 sufficed with the lower service recently.

Boston Lodge carriage shed

While electrical work was nearing a conclusion at the end of October and the shed is now almost fully lit, work on the last section of concrete and the walls will not be complete until next year. This may mean that some coaches will have to stay outside over winter.

F&WHR traffic 23/10/21

Saturday 23/10/21 dawned cloudy and damp at Porthmadog at the start of the Half Term holiday with a maximum of 14C forecast. The Woodland Wanderer operates until the final day 31/10/21 with four trains a day, reducing to three for the final weekend by dropping the 10:00. There is congestion on The Cob with traffic lights for work associated with rebuilding the wall and visual splay for the Premier Inn. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam is still out of action. The Festrail Insider Facebook page seemed to have problems too with just a single message displayed.

Blanche arrived back on the return of the 10:00 Woodland Wanderer at 12:36 and No.87 emerged from the yard to run round the Snowdonia Star at 12:47 for its return journey with the sun finally emerging briefly between the showers. Blanche then ran round and departed on time at 13:15. Lyd arrived at 13:40 with the return of the 11:05 Woodland Wanderer. Blanche and Lyd have been the mainstay of this service for the last few weeks. No.87 departed on time at 14:16 by which time Lyd had run round and was ready for the 14:20 Woodland Wanderer which left on time.

Blanche returned at 15:54 and at 16:15 and shunted the rake to the yard. No.130 arrived back with The Harbourmaster at 16:36. The rake was shunted to the FR platform at 16:40. Lyd returned at 16:50 into the WHR platform with the final Woodland Wanderer. At 16:50 the Garratt left light engine for Boston Lodge and Blanche emerged from the yard as Lyd detached and ran to the yard and departed light engine at 17:09. Blanche coupled to the Garratt's rake and shunted it to the yard before unusually topping up with water from the hose used for carriage cleaning. The loco inexplicably remained in the station for quite some time with the driver oiling round and eventually received a green signal at 17:50, departing at 18:05 with some special working possibly with a few coaches.

The Gelert Explorer operates Monday-Thursday with the Snowdonia Star having its final runs today and on 30/10/21. The Back to Blaenau service is running TWThO and is fully booked. The Glaslyn Venturer will be running two trains a day as usual from Monday to Thursday and The Harbourmaster will see its last run on Friday.

NG13 No.60 trials 19/10/21

The VoR's NG13 Garratt No.60, that arrived from Switzerland 4 years ago, has been completed and ran a light engine trial trip to Devil's Bridge for clearance and performance testing on 19/10/21. The loco may be used on passenger services next year and there is speculation that it might be hired for use on the WHR if ever there is a serious failure of one of the two active Garratts or for SuperPower. The red liveried loco is similar to the NG16 Garratts in appearance. The Rail Advent webpage carries a video of the trial.

Boiler news 19/10/21

The boiler visible in Dinas Yard over SuperPower was the one off No.140 and last used on No.143. This boiler and that about to be removed from No.138 will be placed in the spares pool and the best of the two will be worked on as time permits ready for the next round of ten year overhauls. They will go under cover when the shunting sequence of sheds permits. A further boiler formerly used on No.143 is under heavy repair at Israel Newton and will be fitted to No.138. It has new barrel piece and inner firebox.

F&WHR Winter Services?

Winter services on the F&WHR are still under discussion, with a management meeting scheduled for 22/10/21 but as it stands the timetable ends next Sunday 31/10/21. However, for many schools Half Term is the first weekend of November and the F&WHR seems to be missing a trick here! Many other railways are operating Santa Trains, Christmas Lights, Polar Express, Mince Pie Specials etc in the period over Xmas and the New Year, including railways in North Wales. For example the Tal-y-llyn Railway operates services every weekend throughout November/December and over the Festive period until 5/1/22!

TVLR applying for T&W Order

The Tanat Valley Light Railway, based on the Nantmawr branch near Oswestry, is raising funds to engage a Parliamentary Solicitor to start a T&WO application for its line and allow extensions. An initial £40,000 is needed and so far over £13,000 has been raised. The whole process is estimated to cost £100,000 and that before any track or bridge renewals. £25,000 can start the ball rolling. The line is a former freight branch at the very end of the Potteries Line from Shrewsbury (Abbey Station) to Llan-y-mynech and Blodwel Junction.

Although currently operating a short length from Nantmawr Quarry terminus on an occasional basis as far as a level crossing over a minor lane, the group wishes to double their operational length to Llanddu Quarry sidings, a junction with the existing (if overgrown) Cambrian Railway's branch from Llynclys to Llan-y-blodwel Junction, namely the Llangynog Branch. The TVR cannot proceed over the level crossing without the T&WO. A locked gate at Llanddu Junction separates the Nantmawr line from the CR's stub of the Llangynog branch which had its Porth-y-waen level crossing buried in tarmac recently and showing signs of becoming abandoned again after clearance 10 years ago. Visitors from the Midlands to the F&WHR might pass through this area on their journey over the B4391 Llangynog-Bala Berwyn Pass.

No.130 failure 16/10/21

The loco dropped a fusible plug on 16/10 and the train rapidly came to a halt blocking Pont Croesor bridge. The train was rescued by a diesel and arrived about an hour late in Porthmadog. Preparations were made over the Snowdonia Star lunch break to provide power for the return working. Vale of Ffestiniog was sourced from PW duties and David Lloyd George from Boston Lodge. The pair swapped with No.87 at Rhyd Ddu so that there was a working Garratt at Dinas for services the next day. No.130 was back in service a few days later with the offending fusible plug having been replaced. Upnor Castle rescued the train . At least it is flat on The Traeth so not a huge effort for a small diesel, even if it is a WHR mega-train! Criccieth Castle was the Mountain Prince pilot at Tan-y-bwlch.

As a result David Lloyd George was on the first Glaslyn Venturer on 18/9/21.

F&WHR traffic 16/10/21

Saturday was forecast to have sunny periods with 15C maximum temperatures. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam is still out of action. Four Mountain Prince trains are booked today with the 14:20 fully booked in addition to The Harbourmaster and the Snowdonia Star.

At 10:42 Blanche was shunting the A set to the FR platform for the 11:20. The Snowdonia Star had arrived by 13:30. Vale of Ffestiniog passed through the WHR run round loop from the Beddgelert direction with empty ballast wagons. The train was held at signals as the 13:40 Mountain Prince was ready to depart with Lyd at 13:42. At 13:50 the PW train shunted into the yard. Once David Lloyd George had arrived in the WHR loop at 14:22, Vale of Ffestiniog shunted onto the rear as the timing load for this train exceeds that of a single Fairlie. The PW wagons were left in the station yard. It seems No.130 was not available at Dinas for this service today.

F&WHR signals some 'hop on-hop off' tickets next year 15/10/21

Giving an update on the F&WHR after the NLHF announcement, Paul Lewin, General Manager explained that the fixed journey opportunities afforded by the named trains policy had helped the F&WHR recover well. The railway was now in a position to get through Winter where essential PW work was necessary on the FR and lineside cutting back was essential on the WHR. Views on some parts of the system were being obscured by tree canopy again, He recognised that enthusiast and supporters wished to return to 'hop on-hop off' or the 'turn up and go' style of previous years and hoped that a mix of book in advance fixed journeys and turn up and go accommodation could be provided.

Click on the YouTube link to watch 7 mins 14 seconds of video of Paul Lewin explaining the HL Award. This video was published on 15/10/21 and taken by John Wooden (F&WHR) on 4K Betamax Camcorder.

Many other railways, including most in Wales such as the Tal-y-llyn and Llangollen, have reverted to 'hop on-hop off' services. Supporters have expressed concern about the 'Disneyfication' of the F&WHR, including the inability to purchase tickets for single persons. Provision could be made by having a coach on each train set aside for such intermediate traffic next year.

F&WHR traffic 15/10/21

Friday 15/10/21 was forecast to be a fine sunny day at Porthmadog but with chilly maximum temperatures of 13C forecast. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was still out of action. The 13:40 Mountain Prince was sold out today but the 15:00 still had space at midday. Lyd passed Minffordd at 15:13 with the 15:00 Mountain Prince. Blanche arrived back with the return working of the 13:40 at 16:48.

Saturday sees four Mountain Prince workings with the 13:40 already sold out. The 09:40 Harbourmaster and the 10:00 Snowdonia Star are both sold out. All six Back to Blaenau services are now fully booked though it is always worth phoning as people do phone and cancel from time to time.

With just two weeks until the end of the season, there is still no indication of any train service after 31/10/21, Santa Specials/Mince Pie Specials/February Half Term services etc. Normally there would be trains catering for coach party traffic from Porthmadog to Hafod-y-llyn on the WHR.

F&WHR wins £3.144m NLHF grant 15/10/21

F&WHR announcement

We are delighted to announce that the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways (FFWHR) has been successful in its application for a £3.1million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF). This is a momentous occasion for our railway and is the culmination of years of hard work by our staff and volunteers, developing this outstanding application. An additional £900,000 of matched funding for this three-and-a-half-year project, will be provided by supporters.

FFWHR General Manager, Paul Lewin said; “We would like to thank everyone who has played a part in the success of this application, it has been a huge collective effort and one in which we can all take great pride.”

We now look forward to making our visions a reality thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The full announcement available on our NLHF Project website.

The total, amounting to £4m, will be used for the Interpretation and Boston Lodge Projects. These projects will also provide training, employment and volunteering opportunities for the community of Porthmadog (and presumably further afield!).

Cambrian Railways extension to open soon

The Cambrian Railways at Oswestry is set to complete deferred maintenance in November and open the Weston Wharf Extension for a members special at the AGM 13/11/21 and for booked parties. Mince Pie Specials are possible between Xmas and New Year though there will be no general public service until the new season starting 1/4/22. A press launch will be held on 31/3/22 and public services will begin the next day between Oswestry and Weston Wharf where the Mk3 buffet is being fitted out as a cafe and a picnic garden area created. See public timetable. Suburban brake coach E43145 is ready for service but there has been vandalism to 2 stored coaches at Oswestry.

F&WHR traffic 13/10/21

Porthmadog was forecast to have sunny periods and a maximum temperature of 16C. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was not working today after problems with it earlier in the week. Three Woodland Wanderer trains were diagrammed today as well as the Back to Blaenau service.

Lyd was shunting the rake for the 12:10 Woodland Wanderer at 11:35 and left on time in a cloud of condensation. The Back to Blaenau train left at 11:40. Blanche was on the 14:20 which left on time. Lyd arrived back with the 11:05 at 14:43 shunted the rake to the seawall siding and left light engine for the depot at 15:02. David Lloyd George arrived back from Blaenau at 16:13 into the FR platform and after shunting its rake to the yard left light engine for the depot after the return of Blanche on the 14:20 into the FR platform at 16:52.

F&WHR traffic 12/10/21

Porthmadog started the day with sunny periods and a maximum of 16C forecast. Three Woodland Wanderer trains are booked with the 12:100 already sold out. Two Glaslyn Venturer trains are planned today as well as the TThO Gelert Explorer and the TWThO Back to Blaenau trains. The live stream Railcam link was not available for Minffordd or Tan-y-bwlch this morning.

The Glaslyn Venturer left on time at 10:15 hauled by No.87. Blanche turned up light engine at 10:35 for the 11:05 Woodland Wanderer which departed on time once David Lloyd George had arrived into the WHR platform with the Back to Blaenau set at 11:00. The Fairlie worked to the fuelling point at 11:12.

Six of the final 9 TWThO Back to Blaenau trains are already fully booked with the first available being on 20/10/21.

Bygones Specials

On 8/10/21 Blanche hauled the Y Cymro service and Lyd hauled a return service to Beddgelert with the C set. Merddin Emrys hauled a train to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back.

On 9/10/21 Palmerston provided some variety hauling a freight through Minffordd and Lyd worked a return trip to Beddgelert.

On 10/10/21 Upnor Castle hauled the gravity train to Dduallt before letting it run down the valley in unusually good morning light conditions.

Blanche experienced a minor failure at the weekend but was back in action by 12/10/21.

Simon Roberts of 'Steaming around Yorkshire' has produced a video compilation of the weekend.

If only the WHR had been offered a Gala like this, rather than what was advertised as a 'small event', more might have attended?

Narrow Gauge roundup 12/10/21

The Vale of Rheidol is completing the overhaul of VoR resident Hanomag 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garratt NG/G13 (10551/1927) No. 60. This loco is projected to be ready to enter service before the end of this season, another Garratt that might visit the WHR for a gala in the future? Work is also about to recommence on restoration of Baldwin 10-12-D 4-6-0T WDLR No. 794 (BLW44699/1917), which will be completed as WHR No. 590, for the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway.

A further very visible improvement is the completion of the trackwork at Aberystwyth linking the new £531,000 Museum collection building in the old Carmarthen platform and the old BR loco shed that houses the heritage rolling stock. This was completed between lockdowns last year connecting the new shed to the rest of the system. Stock has been moved into the new building from the old standard gauge locomotive shed which has been cleared and, in time, will be developed into a 5000sq ft multi-function display and entertainment space.

The Bala Lake railway is holding a Diesel Gala on Sunday 17/10/21 which will feature diesel haulage and freight action. The F&WHR could take note of this development! See BLR website for full details.

F&WHR traffic 11/10/21

After a stormy wet period following the equinox, Porthmadog weather has improved with a fine weekend followed by similar weather forecast this week. There still appear to be plenty of late season tourists about. Three Mountain Prince trains were scheduled today with the 11:05 fully booked with a 13:40 and 15:00 to follow. These are the only trains running as the Glaslyn Venturer is now TThO as is the Gelert Explorer.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch Upnor Castle was waiting for the arrival of the 10:00 Mountain Prince hauled by Welsh Pony at 10:43. The 13:40 was also fully booked before departure. Lyd returned to Porthmadog at 14:05 in time for the 15:00 service.

Meanwhile spare 'Romanian' coach No.2060 was noted being hauled south through Snowdon Ranger at noon on 11/10/21 by Vale of Ffestiniog, on an inspection special.

Potential passengers are also looking to the timetable post 29/10/21 when the season currently finishes. Many heritage railways are offering Galas and trains through to Xmas, including Xmas Lights and Santa Specials but no announcement has come from the F&WHR yet. Many lines are offering hop on-hop off 'turn up and go' services but recent statements from the F&WHR seem to indicate it is wedded to the current named train timetable with no intermediate journeys allowed.

Moelwyn Tunnel dedication 10/10/21

A small ceremony was held at Moelwyn Tunnel South portal on 10/10/21 where the recently completed dressed stone portal was dedicated to the miners by the Engineer Mike Schumann who oversaw the project. Your webmaster was one of many volunteers who helped construct the tunnel and actually drive the mines loco in the tunnel.

Donors' Train 10/10/21

The F&WHR ran a Donors' Event again this year with COVID easing. As well as visiting Boston Lodge the train ran to Blaenau Ffestiniog calling at Tunnel South for the completion of the south portal dressed stonework there and to dedicate a plaque. Upnor Castle hauled the train from Porthmadog to Boston Lodge, Lyd to Blaenau Ffestiniog and return to Pen Cob, followed by No.87 from Pen Cob-Beddgelert and return. When the Garratt was disposed to the depot it was accompanied by Welsh Pony to clear the station section to Boston Lodge more quickly.

Back to work 10/10/21!

Having cleared away all the caravan paraphernalia, had my flu jab, dealt with four weeks of washing and emails, this website is back in action after a well deserved four week break at Porthmadog (the first holiday in 2 years!).

Some progress has also been made with the Kodak DX6490 files which ran for over 10 years from 1/05 to 7/16 with 4209 images. Some 1500 of these are currently 'lost' but may be found amongst the SD/SDHC cards and images uploaded to website (so saved in the WHR archive).

NG15 No.134 boiler update

The overhaul of 134’s Boiler at LMS in Loughborough is progressing well and an update is due as was given to those at the WHRS AGM weekend in September. Once the scope of the overhaul had been agreed in late May, the contract for the firebox repair and large items of steelwork were placed and LMS could order the materials from their suppliers. In June and July the foundation ring, dome and doubler plate were inspected and any cracks weld-repaired, while the boiler waited its turn in the main works and the plates were delivered. In August rebuild work started on the firebox proper and by mid-September the throatplate and outer firebox lower patches are now fully welded in place, firebox corners weld-repaired and foundation ring temporarily refitted to keep datums while the various plates are rebuilt around it. The new front section of the barrel has been delivered and the new smokebox is at an advanced state of preparation. Next steps in the Autumn will be to fit the new bosses for washout plugs and prepare the inner firebox plates and backhead patch.

In parallel to LMS working on the firebox the 134 Group have had 2 patterns for the boiler expansion brackets made by the Carriage Works at Boston Lodge and castings for these are now being poured in Sheffield for machining and fitting to the foundation ring in October. The Group would like to give thanks to those who purchased No.134 merchandise from the Group and gave donations at SuperPower and subsequently during the week, these are all contributing to the possibility that the Group can place the next package of boiler work and see that new barrel mounted. If anyone else is feeling generous the Group would be very grateful of any support to keep up the current increased pace of No.134’s return to steam.

Llangollen gets their Class 47 out 3/10/21

The third and final main line loco Class 47 No. 47449 (as D1566 in BR blue) was trialled on passenger work for the first time under the Trust's Management on Sunday 3/10/21 after testing the previous weekend. It does not appear to have any turns booked in the near future due to crew rotas. On 9/10/21 the ballast train received a fitness to run exam ready for ballasting Corwen station on 11-12/10/21.

F&WHR traffic 1/10/21

The weather at Porthmadog was cold wet and windy with autumn setting in early for the last week of September after the equinox. Services had reduced accordingly with just two sets out on the Mountain Prince operating four trains most days. One of the few brighter/drier days was 1/10/21 which saw Criccieth Castle used as the Dduallt shunt loco.

Trains for 6/10/21 see just two Woodland Wanderer workings, the 11:05 and 14:20 with one loco in steam. The Back to Blaenau is fully booked with availability from 12/10/21. The Glaslyn Venturer is now reduced to TThO (twice a day) and all trains are currently bookable. The Harbourmaster is SO but will not run this weekend because of the FR Gala and the Snowdonia Star is similarly cancelled. The Gelert Explorer is TThO at the moment but will run additionally on 9/10/21.
