F&WHR 31/5/23

Wednesday 31/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-20C. There were seven FR trains scheduled including both Mountain Spirit trains and four Woodland Wanderer trains for the first time plus The Quarryman. There were four trains again on the WHR including two The Aberglaslyn trains, The Cwellyn, the Gelert Explorer. Scaffolding that had partially covered the Minffordd webcam view was removed today.

Vale of Ffestiniog was noted hauling the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer in place of Blanche. Welsh Pony passed Minffordd at 15:23 with the returning The Quarryman. The Funkey was released from this duty later as the 15:40 Woodland Wanderer did not run. At 16:27 the Funkey hurried through the WHR platform light engine towards Beddgelert.  The 15:40 return The Aberglaslyn had not arrived at 16:20 so this was possibly a rescue mission. Merddin Emrys returned with the third Woodland Wanderer at 16:46 into the FR platform. The loco ran round at 16:56 and set of wit the ECS at 17:00.

The big surprise was Vale of Ffestiniog hauling in the afternoon The Aberglaslyn at 16:59 almost 40 minutes late with no sign of the Garratt! The Garratt had been detached with a problem and shunted off the rake at Pont Croesor. The ECS departed at 17:10 but recovery of the Garratt remained a mystery for a while until No.87 arrived light engine at 17:23 in the WHR platform as the crew appeared to have fixed the issue, believed to be inability to maintain an adequate vacuum so brakes kept dragging. The loco continued to the depot at 17:29.

No.87 made a loco swop at Beddgelert to return it from Dinas.

• 11:30 - Gelert Explorer - Caernarfon to Beddgelert

• 15:40 - The Aberglaslyn - Beddgelert to Porthmadog

During the day a freight train of PW wagon, B wagons and the SAR brakevan was stabled in the seawall siding at Porthmadog.

The afternoon Mountain Spirit was also delayed, finally running into the FR platform at 17:45 behind David Lloyd George, some 35 minutes late. The ECS eventually departed at 18:07, one of the longest shifts for the hard working signaller who was then able to close the box and go home!

F&WHR 30/5/23

Tuesday 30/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-22C. There were six FR trains scheduled including both Mountain Spirit trains and four Woodland Wanderer trains for the first time. Seven trains were booked on the FR including The Quarryman and for the first time four on the WHR including both through trains and two of The Cwellyn trains. This is achieved by moving the first The Cwellyn departure back to 12:00 which permits a second run at 15:15 passing the returning Snowdonia Star at Waunfawr at 15:45. The Minffordd webcam was back in action today although largely obscured by scaffolding. It was possible that the 4 wheeler rake would be returned from the WHHR this week.

The first train noted at Porthmadog was No.130 which arrived about 09:30 with the ECS for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster. David Lloyd George was second with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit arriving ECS at 09:53. Merddin Emrys coupled up to the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer in the WHR platform at 10:40 after arriving with the ECS at about 10:30. For a while two Fairlies stood in adjacent platforms waiting to depart up the FR with their trains. The Mountain Spirit left 8 minutes late, presumably waiting for a late booking. The Woodland Wanderer left just 2 minutes late.

At 10:52 Harlech Castle arrived at Tan-y-bwlch from the east with a PW train including the FR Mess car. The train waited in the loop for both east bound trains to clear the section, departing for Minffordd Yard at 12:03 as soon as the Woodland Wanderer had arrived. Meanwhile down at Porthmadog Blanche departed the FR platform at 12:08 with the second Woodland Wanderer. At Tan-y-bwlch Welsh Pony passed through at 12:23 heading for Porthmadog with The Quarryman running over 10 minutes late. Once the train had cleared the shunt limit, Merddin Emrys ran round at 12:29.

Down at Porthmadog No.87 started the busy midday period arriving at 12:33 with the Snowdonia Star. Two minutes later the loco detached and ran to the yard to fuel and water. Meanwhile up at Tan-y-bwlch the Fairlie propelled the train to the east shunt limit at 12:35 and ran back into the westbound platform to clear the Eastbound platform for the arrival of the second Woodland Wanderer.

The Garratt returned to its train at 12:47 and completed the run round at 12:50 so it was ready for the 14:05 return service. The train would stand in the WHR platform for well over an hour. Meanwhile, Blanche seemed to be having problems as the second Woodland Wanderer arrived at tan-y-bwlch over 20 minutes late at 13:02. The Fairlie departed promptly trying to recover its schedule and to clear the platform for the returning Mountain Spirit which arrived just 10 minutes behind at 13:12.

Down at Porthmadog Welsh Pony ran round and propelled its train into the yard at 13:20 to make space in the FR platform for the returning Woodland Wanderer which arrived at about 13:40. This was rapidly unloaded and propelled out of the station before being shunted back into the yard by 13:50. This allowed the Mountain Spirit to arrive at 13:59, almost quarter of an hour late. There were now four trains in the Harbour station!

The second Woodland Wanderer left Tan-y-bwlch just before 13:00. Down at Porthmadog Merddin Emrys swapped duties, ran round and coupled to the 14:10 Mountain Spirit just before the return working of the Snowdonia Star departed at on time at 14:05. This was followed by the Fairlie 5 minutes later. By swopping duties this way the two Fairlies do equal mileage turns. Blanche rolled into the WHR platform at 14.33 while the Fairlie was running round in the yard. Blanche uncoupled immediately to run round. At 14:35 David Lloyd George shunted the rake for the Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform whilst Welsh Pony ran round.

The third Woodland Wanderer left at 14:43, some 8 minutes late. Blanche waited in the WHR until the train cleared The Cob section. Once clear of shunt limits the loco ran to the yard to fuel and water. At 14:51 coupled up to extract The Quarryman rake from the yard and shunt it back to the FR platform at 14:57. The Quarryman left on time and as soon it had cleared the section Blanche shunted out to couple up to the fourth Woodland Wanderer at 15:12.

At 15:15 Tan-y-bwlch was subject to a sudden invasion of several sheep that had managed to break through the fencing somewhere. David Lloyd George arrived on the third Woodland Wanderer at 15:21.

At 17:49 the ECS Mountain Spirit rake left the WHR platform for the depot while Blanche was running round with the fourth Woodland Wanderer rake. the ECS departed at 18:01 to close the day's activities.

KS4415 update

Kerr Stuart pioneer diesel loco KS4415 trialled on the WHR and FR in summer 1928 and is being restored at Boston Lodge over an extended period. The project has recently advanced from being a rolling chassis to having the distinctive hood over the engine and a cab fitted. It is hoped the loco will be on display at Porthmadog Harbour Station during the WHR100 event. For more information and images see KS4415 Blogspot updated 24/5/23.

This northerly view (26/5/23) shows No.KS4415 standing in Boston Lodge yard after fitting of the cab and engine compartment cover. It is hoped to complete the loco cosmetically with shutters and paint by the time of WHR100. This image is copyright Rob Bishop (F&WHR) and was taken on a digital camera. F&WHR 29/5/23

Bank Holiday Monday 29/5/23 was a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with temperatures of 8-18C. There were six FR trains scheduled including both Mountain Spirit trains and four Woodland Wanderer trains for the first time. Meanwhile the WHR had 3 trains booked with both of The Aberglaslyn trains running and the Gelert Explorer. The Cwellyn will operate TWThO for the rest of the Half Term holiday but will be retimed on Tuesday to depart at 12:00.  which will allow a second run at 15:15, which was also not in the early plans for this service (originally TWThO in August). This suggests demand for tickets from Caernarfon has exceeded expectations. Lyd is allocated to haul The Cwellyn trains and Welsh Pony was on The Quarryman.

Yesterday's mystery failure of the afternoon The Aberglaslyn service to return to Porthmadog seems to have been caused by a fire near Nantmor. It seems the train was terminated at Beddgelert and passengers bussed back to Porthmadog. Vale of Ffestiniog departed Porthmadog light engine shortly after 07:30 on Monday with the C2 team assisting. They took lighting up materials and got the loco lit up whilst recovering the rake, arriving back in Porthmadog at 09:30 with the loco. The rake and loco were then hurriedly prepared for the 10:15 The Aberglaslyn service which appeared to leave on time with No.87. Yesterday's haulage, No.130, must have swapped at Beddgelert when the train was terminated there so No.87 was probably cold this morning when recovered.

This northerly view (29/5/23) shows Vale of Ffestiniog recovering No.87 and its train on an early morning run from Beddgelert passing Ynysfor level crossing. The loco was ready for service by the 10:15 departure time from Porthmadog given the help of the C2 Team . This image is copyright C2 Team (F&WHR) and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

At 10:45, Merddin Emrys departed on The Mountain Spirit from the FR platform and David Lloyd George was coupled to the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer in the WHR platform. As the FR was running four Woodland Wanderer trains today, another steam loco was required for the additional rake due to leave at 12:05. Blanche duly turned up with the new rake at 12:30 into the FR platform. Run round came 5 minutes later.

At the end of the afternoon Merddin Emrys ran round the Mountain Spirit in the WHR platform at 17:25 and departed ECS at 17:30 after which the signaller was seen to close the box. This makes it doubtful that the booked 15:30 Woodland Wanderer ran today and no train arrived in Porthmadog at 17:40, its booked return time. The Minffordd webcam failed at 15:36 and, with the rollback features disabled on both the Tan-y-bwlch and Harbour Station webcams, it was impossible to check. These webcams have been very unreliable of late.

F&WHR 28/5/23

Sunday 28/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 10-19C. There were four FR trains scheduled including both Mountain Spirit trains and four trains on the WHR, with both of The Aberglaslyn trains, the Gelert Explorer and The Cwellyn, the latter appearing for the first time this year for the school Half Term holiday week. Initially it was advised this service would TWThO in August. This means two locos must be turned out at Dinas with a Garratt for the Gelert Explorer and a smaller loco for The Cwellyn, a shorter rake which turns back at Rhyd Ddu.

Meanwhile at Porthmadog David Lloyd George was allocated to haul its first passenger service Sunday morning on the 10:45 Mountain Spirit service to Blaenau Ffestiniog, followed by an afternoon run to Tan-y-Bwlch with the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer service. No.130 had been allocated to The Glaslyn and arrived back from the morning duty at 12:58. The loco immediately uncoupled and shunted to the yard to fuel and water. Run round came at 13:15.

Merddin Emrys had been on the morning Woodland Wanderer but was noted running round at 13:40 as The Aberglaslyn departed. David Lloyd George arrived back at 13:45 on the Mountain Spirit. The two Fairlies then swopped duties with Merddin Emrys dropping onto the front of the afternoon Mountain Spirit while David Lloyd George ran to the yard to fuel and water.

The afternoon The Aberglaslyn was not observed returning at 16:20 At the end of the afternoon Merddin Emrys detached from the Mountain Spirit and waited in the WHR loop for the ECS Woodland Wanderer to depart before going to fuel and water at 17:13. The loco came back at 17:22 to complete the run round and departed with the ECS at 17:28 to end the day's activities.

Sunday services on WHHR 28/5/23

There will only be one set in operation on Sunday 28/5/23 with No.590 hauling all trains today. There will be half hourly services from 10:15-12:15 and 13:15-16:15. Normal headline fares will apply with no concessions.

WHHR No.590 launch

Saturday 27/5/23 saw the launch of Baldwin No.590 at Gelert's Farm with a special train for guests and its use on public services later. The day was very successful and the WHR now has two of the three home locos that operated on it between 1923-1936. There is still a chance that a replica single Fairlie Moel Tryfan might be produced as the current Gowrie project seeks to rebuild a short lived PBSSR single Fairlie loco that was sold to the UK Government in 1918 before the opening of the WHR in 1923. Gowrie therefore never saw use on the WHR whereas the single Fairlie Moel Tryfan/Snowdon Ranger amalgamation, running as Moel Tryfan hauled trains on the WHR (and the FR) until 1935! There has been no news on the Gowrie website since last year though a Friends of Gowrie Facebook page has been updated to May 2023 showing ongoing recent progress with this project.

It seems that No.590 has been suffering issues with its airbrake since it arrived from the VoR which have not yet been sorted. This posed issues for the WHHR's two train service on 27/5/23 but the F&WHR came to their rescue and supplied a carriage set, mostly 4-wheelers plus the short brake 3rd (No.10) for No.590 to haul using its vacuum brakes. They were all in Col .Stephen’s green and the train looked prototypical (the rake consisted of Nos.12/3/4/1/10).

F&WHR 27/5/23

Saturday 27/5/23 was a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-20C. There were four FR trains scheduled including the morning Mountain Spirit and The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR.

The first train today was the 10:05 Harbourmaster hauled by No.130. The rake was already in the platform and ready to go at 10:00 and another ECS was on its way over The Cob. Merddin Emrys pulled into the FR platform with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit at 10:05 as the Garratt departed. The loco ran round at 10:25 as the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer came across The Cob.

Midday marked the start of a busy period at Porthmadog with the arrival of the Snowdonia Star, The Quarryman and the return of the Woodland Wanderer and Mountain Spirit. At 12:30 No.143 detached from the Snowdonia Star and worked into the station yard to fuel and water. At 12:40 David Lloyd George was noted shunting the yard. The Quarryman arrived at 12:51 into the FR platform in the hands of Welsh Pony. At 12:55 No.143 emerged from the yard to couple to the front of the  14:05 return working of the Snowdonia Star. This was followed at 12:57 by Welsh Pony running round and shunting its rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for the return of the Woodland Wanderer. This arrived at 13:20 in the hands Blanche. Blanche propelled its train out past the yard king point and back into the sidings to clear the FR platform for the return of the Mountain Spirit at 13:45. Merddin Emrys arrived with the Mountain Spirit at 13:45 into the FR platform.

David Lloyd George was visible light engine in the WHR platform at 14:37 as Welsh Pony departed from the FR platform on the return leg of The Quarryman.

No.130 arrived back in the WHR platform at 16:37. At 16:45 Blanche returned with the Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform and ran round at 16:51. A minute later the Garratt left with its ECS for Boston Lodge and Blanche left with its ECS at about 17:05 to close the day's activities.

Appeal for No.590 photos

Your webmaster is only now getting back into the car after 2 months lying in a hospital bed so is unable to make the 400 mile round trip to Porthmadog this weekend for the WHHR launch of No.590, despite being keen to do so! If anyone has any photos of No.590 at the event that they would like to share via the website I would be very happy to give them credit for their work.

F&WHR 26/5/23

Friday 26/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 13-19C. There were just two FR trains scheduled with none on the WHR. A rake of four wheelers was scheduled to be delivered to the WHHR around midday, presumably to test with No.590. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam appears to have lost its 'rollback time' feature leaving the Minffordd webcam as the only one with this feature but that is still obscured by scaffolding.

At 09:52 Harlech Castle turned up in the WHR platform with a short train along with Vale of Ffestiniog on the rear. The train split and the Funkey drew the B wagons with fuel off the rear and propelled them to the fuelling point in the yard. The Funkey reappeared light engine at 10:01 to extract one B wagon from the seawall siding. This was shunted onto other wagons at 10:06. Meanwhile the cherrypicker arm was activated and attention was given to the signals half way along the platform as Blanche approached with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 10:28 ready for the 11:10 departure. The Funkey reappeared at 10:35 propelling the B wagon out of the yard towards Boston Lodge.

After finishing the work, the cherrypicker rose to maximum height maybe to allow an unusual photo of Blanche departing on the Woodland Wanderer. The cherrypicker was stowed minutes later and the train was propelled to the end of platform signals to resume maintenance at 11:20, then part way along The Cob to maintain the Home signals. The loco and cherrypicker rake was back in the station at 13:07, clearing The Cob section for the Woodland Wanderer to return at 13:20. A few minutes later the train departed towards the WHR to pick up tools from Cae Pawb maintenance the previous day. Blanche arrived in the FR platform on time.

At Gelert's Farm No.590 was lit up for the afternoon tests at 13:40. Harlech Castle and the cherrypicker went up the WHR and the Funkey was stabled on the WHR platform with a B wagon at 13:35. At 13:46 Blanche made an unexpected move back to Boston Lodge light engine. Blanche or another loco will have to be made available by 14:35 for the afternoon Woodland Wanderer.

At 13:55 the Funkey and some bug boxes left Porthmadog for the WHHR, crossing Cae Pawb at 14:06. A few minutes later Vale of Ffestiniog propelled the onto the WHHR at Pen-y-Mount where they will be used as part of the No.590 launch this weekend 27-28/5/23.

Cycle route threat to Amlwch Line 25/5/23

An Anglesey community group is pushing for the Amlwch line to be pulled up and converted into an 18 mile cycleway. This will annoy the volunteers who have a licence from NR to clear vegetation from the line with a view to operating a heritage railway. See Daily Post story.

F&WHR 25/5/23

Thursday 25/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 7-16C. There were five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the three trains on the WHR, including two Aberglaslyn services.

Merddin Emrys hauled the ECS for the Mountain Spirit. The train was ready to depart the FR platform at 09:45, an hour before booked departure time. at 10:30 Lyd was running round the ECS Woodland Wanderer it had hauled into the FR platform.

At 10:44 a very smoky Vale of Ffestiniog moves up to the starter ground signal along the WHR through line. It turned out to be hauling a steam loco in steam,  the FR's Baldwin No.608!! The loco had apparently been on shed at Boston Lodge overnight and was being transferred to the WHR possibly for more test running. The train departed at about 11:10. It is rumoured that No.608 going to Dinas. No.590 was noted still at Gelert's Farm.

At 12:58 Welsh Pony ran round and extracted The Quarryman from the FR platform before propelling it into the yard to leave space for subsequent arrivals.

No.87 pulled in at 12:35 on the Snowdonia Star but it was not double headed by a Funkey. The promise of Caernarfon Castle had not been borne out. No.87 ran round at 13:10 ready for the return working at 14:05.

Vale of Ffestiniog was visible shunting at Boston Lodge at 17:00. At 17:05 Lyd ran round and coupled up to take the Woodland Wanderer ECS back from the FR platform. Merddin Emrys arrived back in the WHR platform at 17:23 with the afternoon Mountain Spirit over 10 minutes late. This allowed Lyd to depart with the ECS Woodland Wanderer 2 minutes later. At 17:30 the Fairlie ran to the yard to fuel and water. The loco completed the run round at 17:45 and departed with the ECS at 17:50 to close the day's activities.

Current ECS operations at Dinas

With the new bay crossover, train preparation/ECS operations at Dinas for trains have been simplified. The Funkey can draw the rake out of the Carriage Shed and into the bay road. The loco can then run round and haul the train directly out of the North Yard and down to Caernarfon where the rake tends to arrive half an hour before departure time for the convenience of passengers. The Funkey then detaches and runs round into the loop. The steam loco then follows light engine and takes water at Caernarfon before coupling up. After the main train has departed the Funkey then goes light engine back to Dinas when the section is clear and enters the North Yard to stable. These procedures reduce the need for frequent changes of token at Dinas.

Photos of No.590

If anyone has any photos or movement details of No.590 suitable for publication on this website with credit your webmaster would be very grateful. Unfortunately, I'm just out of hospital where I was bedridden for 8 weeks so I'm not able to drive 400 miles there and back to visit the WHHR just yet! Please send any contributions to me at isengard@talktalk.net.

F&WHR 24/5/23

Wednesday 24/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 7-16C. There were five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the three trains on the WHR, including two Aberglaslyn services.

The first train was the Works train hauled by Harlech Castle arriving at 09:51. The loco uncoupled and ran round at 09:53 and the train set off to the west at 10:16.

Lyd was noted on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer leaving the WHR platform at Porthmadog. Meanwhile Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:22 before departing with the Mountain Spirit at 11:28. Lyd followed at 11:46.

After midday the F&WHR's Insidemotion.co.uk website that gives access to webcams introduced a new security feature. Unfortunately this was corrupt and would not accept any of the words typed in to verify the distorted text images. Fortunately other routes were available to the webcams.

Merddin Emrys ran round and coupled up to the Mountain Spirit train in the WHR platform at 14:10 and the train departed 2 minutes later.

Welsh Pony passed Minffordd (still with scaffolding) at 12:41.

F&WHR 23/5/23

Tuesday 23/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 7-17C. There were five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the two through trains on the WHR. A rake of B wagons with ash and the SAR brakevan were stabled in the seawall siding at Porthmadog presumably in transit from Dinas to Dduallt disposal site.

At 09:37 Welsh Pony and Upnor Castle arrived at Tan-y-bwlch on a mixed train with B wagons and The Quarryman rake which had received weekend maintenance at Boston Lodge. The train went forwards to Glan-y-pwll at 10:43 where the B wagon was no doubt removed before the rake was hauled into Blaenau Ffestiniog ECS for the 11:40 departure.

The Harbourmaster left Porthmadog at about 10:05 followed by Merddin Emrys on the Mountain Spirit from the FR platform and Lyd at 11:10 on the Woodland Wanderer from the WHR platform.

There was steam shunting in Boston Lodge yard at 12:25. The Snowdonia Star arrived at 12:36, some 11 minutes late. Five minutes later the Garratt ran to the station yard to refuel and water. Welsh Pony arrived back at 12:54 into the FR platform allowing the Garratt to complete its run round and couple up for the return Snowdonia Star due at 14:05. Welsh Pony ran round at 12:59 then shunted its rake into the station yard as two more trains were set to arrive from the FR.

The next hour was very busy at Porthmadog and included a very unusual scene!!

14:26 No.590 departed the through line for the WHR presumably testing the tight curves on Britannia Bridge, the tramway sections there and at Snowdon Street and the guard rails at NR's Cae Pawb Crossing, including its two catch points.

Earlier in the day the loco had been tested at Boston Lodge with members of the VoR/WHHR teams present. It had worked to the old Loco shed where it was connected to rakes of four wheelers to test the vacuum braking.

Later in the afternoon No.590 was back at Porthmadog and collected the test train from Boston Lodge, for Beddgelert. The test train consisted of Van No.7 and B921 loaded with loco ash. The train arrived at Beddgelert at 15:30 and the loco ran round and departed for Porthmadog at about 16:00. At 17:05 the train arrived back at Boston Lodge where it dropped the test train and worked to Pen-y-Mount light engine, reversing onto its home metals at the WHHR. By 18:00 the loco was stabled at Gelert's Farm depot.

There are a number of videos and photos taken at Porthmadog and Beddgelert  showing the Baldwin with the loaded test train on the Friends of FF&WHR Facebook page.

F&WHR 22/5/23

Monday 22/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 7-16C. There were four FR trains but nothing on the WHR, a regular feature of Mondays/Fridays.

The first train was Harlech Castle which arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 09:33 with a Works Train, including the FR Mess Car. The loco ran round by 09:43 and the train left towards the west at 10:05.

Merddin Emrys arrived in the FR platform at 10:10 with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 10:20 while Lyd prepared the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer over at Boston Lodge. Lyd completed its run round at 10:50 as soon as the Fairlie had departed.

Steam was raised with a third loco at midday at Boston Lodge and shunting was occurring in the Carriage Shed.

Lyd ran round at 17:02 in the WHR platform after arriving with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. Merddin Emrys arrived at 17:10 into the FR platform with the afternoon Mountain Spirit. Lyd set off for Boston Lodge with the ECS Woodland Wanderer at 17:11 as soon as The Cob section was clear. The Fairlie ran round by 17:25 after fuelling and watering and departed with the ECS as the final move of the day.

Baldwin No.590 delivery 22/5/23

The Baldwin appeared to be still at the VoR last week and it was planned to be delivered to the WHHR this week to be tested in preparation for the weekend launch event at the WHHR. The loco might arrive via the Gasworks Siding in Llyn Bach car park or Minffordd Yard as it is a smaller load. It would then be shunted to Pen-y-Mount to reach WHHR metals. The loco is dual fitted so could haul an FR train or be rescued if it fails. As part of preparations for WHR100, vacuum brake components have arrived at Gelert's Farm to be temporarily fitted to Russell which will enable the loco to double head with vacuum fitted F&WHR locos/stock. These vacuum fittings will be retained for future collaborations.

F&WHR 21/5/23

Sunday 21/5/23 was a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-20C. There were three FR trains and just one Gelert Explorer on the WHR.

The first train today was Upnor Castle which passed through Tan-y-bwlch at 09:59 hauling the bug boxes and curly roofed van (Van No.1) which was transferred from the WHR yesterday to Boston Lodge. The rolling stock appeared to be going to Glan-y-pwll for storage.

This westerly view (21/5/23) shows Upnor Castle hauling 4 bug boxes, two bogie coaches and Van no.1 (the curly roofed van) from Boston Lodge to Glan-y-pwll Carriage Shed for storage (presumably). The first train to arrive at Porthmadog was Merddin Emrys at 10:15 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. This train only made a morning run today. At 10:25 a another steam loco was preparing a second rake at Boston Lodge for the Woodland Wanderer. and Lyd duly appeared shortly afterwards in the WHR platform. Run round followed when the 10:45 departure had cleared the shunt limit.

Lyd arrived back first into the FR platform and at 13:41 ran around its train. At 13:46 the Fairlie arrived at Porthmadog into the WHR platform in sunshine with the well loaded Mountain Spirit. At 13:50 the loco ran to fuel and water in the yard. It was back by 14:05 and departed with the ECS for Boston Lodge 2 minutes later.

At 13:39 Upnor Castle reappeared at Tan-y-bwlch from the east with a different rake of six vehicles consisting of one bogie brake and five 4-wheel vehicles including the sentry van on the rear, Van No.3. The train departed for Boston Lodge at 13:44.

More preparations for WHR100

With WHR100 just 4 weeks away No.590 (permanently renumbered from No.794 Tiger) will be launched at the WHHR next weekend. The loco has been fully restored at the Vale of Rheidol on behalf of the WHHR over several years. The loco will then be tested over the tramway sections including Britannia Bridge and the remaining sections of the WHR not travelled by the FR's Baldwin. Other preparations have involved exchange stock. The Funkey returned the bugboxes and curly roof van to Boston Lodge on Saturday after testing elsewhere on the WHR/WHHR and further movements of four wheel stock took place to/from Glan-y-pwll with Upnor Castle on Sunday. The WHR100 advertising does not mention No.590 very much for some reason.

Caernarfon Castle still used on Dinas ECS turns 13/5/23

Although the new bay crossover at Dinas could reduce shunting necessary at Dinas, Caernarfon Castle is still being used  to that the ECS to Caernarfon in the morning.

F&WHR 20/5/23

Saturday 20/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 11-20C. There are four FR trains including The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR.

The first working noted today was 09:15 off Boston Lodge with the Garratt hauling The Harbourmaster into the WHR platform at 09:19 ready for the 10:05 departure. Steam was being raised at Boston Lodge at 09:30 for the ECS for the Mountain Spirit. This train was making a single morning journey today departing Porthmadog at 10:45 and was present in the FR platform by 10:00. More steam was noted shunting Boston Lodge at 10:30 and at 10:45 the Woodland Wanderer rake was in the WHR platform with Lyd in the yard returning from taking fuel/water. The train left on time at 11:10 and volunteers started gardening the plant pots on the platform.

At 11:25 Caernarfon Castle passed through Porthmadog non stop with a short rake of four wheelers and the curly roofed. The train may have been involved in tests at the WHHR or at Dinas in association with the upcoming WHR100 events. The train appeared to pause at Pen Cob Junction for several minutes before being drawn into the Carriage Shed. At 12:16 the loco returned light engine to the WHR run round track. This little used track was essential on this occasion as the Snowdonia Star was due in at 12:25. The train arrived at 12:28 in the hands of No.130 and the Funkey left light engine at 12:43, presumably returning to Dinas. The Garratt promptly ran to the yard to water.

This easterly view (20/5/23) shows Caernarfon Castle waiting to depart the WHR loop for the WHR after the just arrived Snowdonia Star releases the token. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Lyd arrived in the FR platform at 13:20 and at 13:27 the Woodland Wanderer rake was shunted to the yard. Welsh Pony departed the FR platform at 15:05 on its return leg to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

An unexpected working was the return of Welsh Pony with The Quarryman rake to Boston Lodge running as an ECS from Blaenau Ffestiniog. This passed through Tan-y-bwlch at 17:29 and continued 3 minutes later towards Porthmadog. The rake was going for monthly programmed maintenance as it is not required again until Tuesday. A positioning move to Glan-y-pwll is likely early on Tuesday.

The Birthday Special was prepared at Boston Lodge with beautiful evening weather.

This northerly view (20/5/23) shows Maid Marian and Britomart being prepared for the Birthday Special at Boston Lodge. This image is copyright Paul Lewin (F&WHR) and was taken on a phone camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The final departure of the day was the special which left Porthmadog at 18:00 for Tan-y-bwlch with Britomart, Maid Marian and Blanche on the front.

This easterly view (20/5/23) shows Britomart, Maid Marian and Blanche departing on a special evening working to Tan-y-bwlch. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Unfortunately the Tan-y-bwlch webcam failed again at about 18:00 so the special train could not be observed arriving at Tan-y-bwlch. Service was restored at 22:25.

Second Fairlie from 27/5/23?

Newly repainted Fairlie David Lloyd George might start to appear on passenger turns from Saturday 27/5/23, possibly double headed as insurance with Merddin Emrys.

F&WHR 19/5/23

Friday 19/5/23 was a day of improving weather at Porthmadog with a sunny afternoon forecast and temperatures of 7-16C. There are just two FR trains booked to run (Woodland Wanderer trains) with no trains on the WHR as a Friday is considered a day holidaymakers travel to a holiday weekend.

The first train noted today was a short Works train passing through Porthmadog towards the WHR. Harlech Castle hauled a single wagon towards Pont Croesor at 09:38.

This easterly view (19/5/23) shows Harlech Castle departing Porthmadog with a short Works train This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Steam was being raised at Boston Lodge at 10:00 and the ECS prepared for the Woodland Wanderer. Lyd arrived in the FR platform at 10:23, running round promptly 5 minutes later for the 11:10 service train.

At 10:10 Vale of Ffestiniog pulled into Tan-y-bwlch with a short Works train with tanks in a DZ wagon, possibly weed killer. The train continued towards Blaenau Ffestiniog. The train returned with just the brake van passing Tan-y-bwlch at 13:56, presumably having left the tank wagon ay Glan-y-pwll depot.

The well loaded Woodland Wanderer train arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:45. Lyd ran round at 12:10 and departed at 12:46 with the return service. Unusually, the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer was signalled to depart Porthmadog from as early as 14:10 showing nothing else was occupying the adjacent section. It left on time.

Lyd also hauled the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. Following the return to Porthmadog this departed ECS at 16:58 to close the day's activities.

Model Railway Workshop/Exhibition Gweithdy Minffordd 20-21/5/23

On previous occasions shuttles have been organised to events at the Minffordd Gweithdy but there is no indication of any shuttles so far. There is a small car park at the location and a regular bus service passes by. For full details see the Model Workshop website.

Loco Roster w/c 20/5/23

This coming week's Loco Roster features seven different locomotives on regular passenger turns:
On the FR - Merddin Emrys, Lyd, Blanche and Welsh Pony will be working the usual selection of train services.

On the WHR - two NG/G16 Beyer-Garratts (Nos.87/130) will be in action during the week, with a rare appearance from diesel Castell Caernarfon on Thursday 26/5/23 on the Snowdonia Star.
In addition, a private train should see a triple-headed train running from Porthmadog to Tan-y-Bwlch on Saturday evening - hauled by Blanche, Britomart and Maid Marian (visiting from the Bala Lake Railway for this special train).

RVR Level crossing decision is good news for Cambrian Railways

The Rother Valley Railway TWO (see story below) contains good news for the Cambrian Railways extension both to Gobowen and to Llynclys. The Oswestry site is hemmed in by level crossings of major roads to both the north (the A5) and the south (the A483). These level crossings were constructed when one limestone train a day was expected on the route from Blodwel Quarry. The Highways Authority has, since the traffic ceased placed a moratorium on opening old level crossings and a ban on any new ones. However it seems that the Tory policy of 'Reversing Beeching' and the HA ban are in conflict and the RVR's TWO explains that a new level crossing will be built across the A21 and well as reopening old level crossings across minor roads in Robertsbridge. This could mean that the Cambrian Railways plans for extending first to Gobowen Junction where they own the bay platform will go ahead.

Politics will inevitably come into any decision to go ahead. The re-opening of the Oswestry branch from Gobowen was a feature of the famous by-election campaign of December 2021 when the Liberal Democrat candidate came from third place to win the seat with both Tories and Lib Dems pushing for reopening. The reopening of the branch is bound to feature in the next General Election campaign. The Tories will have to be careful not to be seen as only reopening railways in their own constituencies such as the Okehampton Branch if the Lib Dems retain the seat. A similar argument applies to the A483 crossing just south of the new Cambrian terminus at Weston Wharf, though this has not featured as highly in Cambrian Heritage Railways plans. It would however allow the heritage operation to extend to Llynclys where CHR also has an operational base.

F&WHR 18/5/23

Thursday 18/5/23 was a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with temperatures of 10-15C. There are five FR trains were booked to run (including The Quarryman) with just one on the WHR, the Snowdonia Star from Caernarfon.

Vale of Ffestiniog was standing at the Home signal on The Cob at 09:25, presumably waiting for the signaller to open the signalbox. At 09:29 a 9 wagon mixed freight arrived which included the ex SAR brakevan, a ballast wagon and an assortment of B wagons and DZ wagons. The loco ran round by 09:38 and, a minute later, shunted the rake into the seawall siding.

This easterly view (18/5/23) shows Vale of Ffestiniog arriving in the FR platform with an unusual mixed freight. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

In a repeat of yesterday's action at Tan-y-bwlch Harlech Castle arrived with a work train at 09:35 and the loco ran round at 09:40. Steam was being raised at Boston Lodge at 09:47 as the Funkey emerged from the yard and proceeded light engine back to Boston Lodge. At 10:05 the ECS for the Mountain Spirit started across The Cob and Merddin Emrys hauled the train into the FR platform at 10:12. Meanwhile up at Tan-y-bwlch the Works train left towards Minffordd at 10:12.

At 10:15 more steam was being raised at Boston Lodge as a loco was prepared to haul the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer over The Cob. The Funkey was shunting rakes at Pen Cob junction at 10:20. It appears Boston Lodge Yard headshunt may not be long enough and some use of the main line (when clear) might be required with longer rakes. Lyd came over at 10:33 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform as usual and ran round immediately.

At 12:25 Lyd arrived at Tan-y-bwlch while Welsh Pony waited on The Quarryman to pass it. Welsh Pony departed at 12:27 for Porthmadog. At the same time, down in Porthmadog, No.130 arrived with the Snowdonia Star. The loco detached and the driver had a chat with the signaller before proceeding to water. At 12:42 the Garratt returned, ran round and coupled up to the 14:05 return service. Welsh Pony arrived with The Quarryman, 10 minutes early at 13:00 and ran round promptly at 13:05. At 13:09 the purpose of the fast run round became clear as the rake was shunted to the yard to clear the FR platform for later arrivals at 13:20 and 13:45. However, Lyd arrived at 13:47, almost half an hour late. At 13:52 this was also shunted to the yard to allow the following Mountain Spirit to return to the FR platform.

The Garratt left on time at 14:05 as both Lyd and Welsh Pony ran round their trains in the yard. At 14:20 the Fairlie ran into the FR platform some 35 minutes down. This meant that the afternoon service was also delayed, arriving back in Porthmadog into the FR platform at 17:43, still over half an hour down. The loco detached to coal and water and ran round at 18:00 before departing with the ECS at 18:04 to close the day's activities.

David Lloyd George volunteer appeal 19/5/23

Calling all local Volunteers. The Carriage Works team need help tomorrow (19/5/23) and if needed over the weekend. Double engine David Lloyd George has come into the Paint Shop for a touch up and re-varnish after having its 10 year boiler overhaul. We need help, particularly tomorrow and possibly over the weekend to get all the paintwork thoroughly degreased, cleaned and light surface prep. The loco is booked to haul trains from Saturday 27/5/23, a little over a week's time. Hence the need for help with prep. If you can help please email the Carriage Works Supervisor Glenn Williams on gwilliams@ffwhr.com.

F&WHR 17/5/23

Wednesday 17/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 10-16C. There are five FR trains were booked to run (including The Quarryman) with three on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer from Caernarfon.

The first train was Harlech Castle hauling a works train into Tan-y-bwlch of 09:32. The loco ran round at 09:37 and coupled to the west end of the train before departing at 10:02 towards Minffordd.

No.130 brought the ECS for the Aberglaslyn into Porthmadog WHR platform by 10:00 and departed on time at about 10:15. Lyd then arrived with the ECS into the WHR platform for the Woodland Wanderer at 10:40 while Merddin Emrys waited in the FR platform for the 10:45 Mountain Prince, which departed on time. Lyd ran round soon after the other train had cleared the shunt limit and departed on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer.

At 11:25 steam was visible at Boston Lodge. The loco shunted out onto The Cob before reversing towards Minffordd Cemetery and then back to The Cob home signal followed by a second run towards Minffordd where volunteers were on the scaffolding painting. The loco was being tested light engine and appeared again at The Cob Home signal 12:05 before retreating. Additional runs were made to the Home signal at 12:15/12:25. As David Lloyd George was placed on its power bogies a few days ago, this was a test of the Fairlie. At 10:30 the loco went back on shed with The Quarryman approaching and the other trains returning from the FR/WHR. A short video is available on the Facebook Festrail website. The loco operated without the domes fitted.

No.130 arrived back with The Aberglaslyn at 12:58 into the WHR platform as Welsh Pony ran round the recently arrived The Quarryman. At 13:01 the Garratt ran to the yard to water. At 14:22 the Fairlie departed on the afternoon Mountain Spirit.

Welsh Pony shunted its rake from the yard to the FR platform at 14:45. The rake had been previously shunted as there are too many trains in the station at once about this time. The Quarryman set off on its return to Blaenau Ffestiniog at 15:08.

The Aberglaslyn arrived back from its afternoon trip at 16:28. Merddin Emrys arrived back from the afternoon trip at 17:17 into the WHR platform and Lyd departed with the ECS Woodland Wanderer as soon as The Cob section was clear. The Fairlie ran to the fuelling point at 17:20 to fuel and water and eventually coupled up to the ECS and departed at 17:43 to close the day's activities.

Pullman Railtour problem 13/5/23

The Nanking Blue Midland Pullman HST ran into problems when returning from Llandudno to St Albans on Saturday 13/5/23. when smoke from a battery problem on the second coach entered the saloon the train was brought to a stop at Chester and the 250 passengers detrained. The fire brigade was in attendance for some hours damping down the batteries. The disappointed passengers were sent home by coach the remaining 200 miles. This was surprising as the LSL depot at Crewe is a short distance away and it cannot have been impossible to take a spare train to Chester to take the people home by rail. See Daily Post report.

F&WHR 16/5/23

Tuesday 16/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 6-15C. There are five FR trains were booked to run (including The Quarryman) with two through trains on the WHR. The FR's Woodland Wanderer rake was operating normally today after services were withdrawn unusually on Monday, possibly for repurposing.

The day started with the signaller entering the signalbox at 08:50. Steam was raised and shunting occurred at Boston Lodge shortly afterwards and the ECS started across the Cob at about 09:20. No.130 arrived in the WHR platform with The Harbourmaster at 09:26 with passengers already gathering for the 10:05 departure. at 10:00 there was more steam and shunting at Boston Lodge as preparations were made to extract the ECS for the Mountain Spirit.

No.130 departed on time as the next train approached across The Cob. Merddin Emrys arrived with the 10:45 Mountain Spirit at 10:11. The Fairlie ran round by 10:25 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer coming across The Cob and arriving in the WHR with Lyd at 10:28. Both trains left on time.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch Welsh Pony arrived  late at 12:18 with The Quarryman but fast work by platform staff saw the train depart just 9 minutes late at 12:19.

No.143 arrived on time with the Snowdonia Star at Porthmadog at 12:25. The loco immediately ran to the yard to fuel and water and at 12:42 the loco ran round to couple to the front of the 14:05 return service in the WHR platform.

At 13:46 the Fairlie was back at Porthmadog arriving into the FR platform with the returning Mountain Spirit. The Garratt left on time. at 14:05.

At 15:40 Welsh Pony was back at Tan-y-bwlch with the returning The Quarryman. After watering the train resumed its journey at 15:48 some 8 minutes late.

Lyd arrived back with afternoon Woodland Wanderer at 16:45 and ran round by 17:00. The Fairlie trailed into the Harbour Station at 17:11 with the returning afternoon Mountain Spirit. With The Cob section now clear, Lyd departed with the ECS for the depot at 17:12. After running round the Fairlie departed with the ECS at 17:24.

At 17:31 No.130 arrived on the returning Harbourmaster service over an hour late for an unexplained reason. The train departed ECS at 17:41 to close the day's activities.

YouTube David Lloyd George update 16/5/23

On 9/5/23 David Lloyd George's boiler underwent a satisfactory steam test. The boiler will now be mated with its refurbished power bogies and the loco returned to main line service by the Summer.

F&WHR 15/5/23

Monday 15/5/23 was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 5-14C. Only two FR trains were booked to run (both Mountain Spirit) with no Woodland Wanderer trains and nothing on the WHR. It was possible the Woodland Wanderer rake was being repurposed.

The final move of the day came when the afternoon working of the Mountain Spirit arrived back in the FR platform at Porthmadog just after 17:00. Merddin Emrys detached and went to water and coal. At 17:20 the loco was noted running round and at 17:26 the ECS departed for the depot.

There was no indication of the reason for not running the Woodland Wanderer but it returns to its usual timetable tomorrow.

WHR Centenary Legacy Project

The WHHG has been making signage for the locations of old stations and halts on the WHR such as Hafod Garregog. Some have already been installed but trains will definitely not stop at these locations other than for photo calls!

This northerly view (14/5/23) shows the new sign erected on the site of the former Hafod Garregog Halt. An additional sign will be added to advise trains do not stop at these locations! There has been some criticism of the modern galvanised poles used especially as the original poles made from flat bottom rail were available at this location. This image is copyright Peter Roughley and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Hafod Ruffydd has already received its sign. Other likely locations include Porthmadog New (two versions!), Ynysfor (just north of Pont Croesor), Croesor Junction, Hafod-y-llyn (replacing the temporary sign), Pitt's Head near the summit, Salem (near the pipe bridge) and Betws Garmon station.

F&WHR 14/5/23

Sunday 14/5/23 was a cloudy day at Porthmadog, tending to rain later, with temperatures of 7-13C. Six trains were booked to run with four on the FR including The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR. Three FR trains and one WHR train were offered (the Gelert Explorer).

Merddin Emrys was the first train of the day, hauling the ECS Mountain Spirit over from Boston Lodge and arrived in the FR platform at 10:00. The loco had run round and coupled up by 10:10. The ECS for the Woodland Wanderer turned up later and Lyd ran round. The train left on time at 11:10.

The Fairlie arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:23 and resumed its journey at 11:32. This was followed by Lyd at 11:51.The loco ran round and the train departed at 12:45. Lyd returned to Tan-y-bwlch on the well loaded afternoon train arriving at 15:14. The loco ran round 10 minutes later and the train departed for Porthmadog at 16:11.

While the Fairlie made only one trip today and retired to the depot later with the ECS Lyd made a second trip up to Tan-y-bwlch with the Woodland Wanderer and was noted arriving back in Porthmadog at 16:44. The loco ran round 10 minutes later and the train departed ECS for the depot at 16:59 to close the day's activities.

Baldwin No.590 launch at WHHR 27-28/5/23

Following the launch for invited guests on the morning of 27/5/23 the WHHR Baldwin No.590 will be hauling public trains over the rest of the weekend of 27-28/5/23 before joining the WHR100 Event on 23-25/6/23. The loco has been turned out in a crimson livery which may have been carried at one time and is now fitted with a back sheet so it looks prototypically correct to the version that ran on the WHR and FR in the 1930s.

F&WHR 13/5/23

Saturday was a sunny day at Porthmadog with temperatures of 8-19C. Six trains were booked to run with four on the FR including The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR.

Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:24 with the morning Mountain Spirit working which departed 10 minutes later. This was followed by Lyd on the Woodland Wanderer at 11:49. Welsh Pony ran through at 12:18 with The Quarryman heading for Porthmadog. Lyd then ran round and departed towards Porthmadog at 12:45. Merddin Emrys followed at 13:10 on the returning Mountain Spirit. There being no afternoon working, once back at Porthmadog the train went ECS to the depot.

Down at Porthmadog Lyd shunted the Woodland Wanderer to the FR platform at 14:17 and arrived back at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:08. At 15:27 the loco, having run round, shunted the rake to the westbound platform to leave the track clear for The Quarryman which passed through at 15:40. This left Lyd to continue to Porthmadog, the ECS of which was the last movement of the day.

Personal Note 12/5/23

This will be a short update today as your webmaster has finally returned home from hospital/rehab after 8 weeks away. Normal service will be restored over the next few days.

F&WHR 12/5/23

Friday 12/5/23 was a sunny day with temperatures of 8-18C. There were only the two Woodland Wanderer trains booked on the FR today and no trains on the WHR. the Tan-y-bwlch webcam was restored to use after being out of action for three days.

First up was Moel Hebog with a Works train passing through Tan-y-bwlch at 09:00. The train left at 09:06 towards Blaenau Ffestiniog.

This westerly view (9/5/23) shows Moel Hebog with a works train at Tan-y-bwlch. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Lyd arrived with the first Woodland Wanderer at 11:47 which appeared to be well loaded. The train departed for Porthmadog at 12:47 after the loco had run round. Moel Hebog was noted running through Tan-y-bwlch towards Porthmadog at 13:16. with the returning works train.

Lyd returned to Tan-y-bwlch at 15:09 with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. After running round, the loco hauled the train back leaving at 16:10 to close the day's activities.

No.130 diagram 13-19/5/23

Garratt No.130 will be operating the most varied diagram next week with Nos. 87/143 operating trains too.

F&WHR 11/5/23

Thursday 11/5/23 was a day of sunny periods and showers with temperatures of 8-14C. The Woodland Wanderer rake was resorted after yesterday's special train so there were five trains on the FR including The Quarryman and just one on the WHR, the Snowdonia Star. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was out of action for a third day and the Minffordd webcam was partially obscured by scaffolding. Only the Harbour Station webcam was working and that has lost its rollback function.

At 10:20 Blanche was running round the Woodland Wanderer rake in the WHR platform while Merddin Emrys ran round the Mountain Spirit train in the FR platform and left on time at 10:45. The Woodland Wanderer also left on time at 11:10 and followed up the FR.

At 12:52 Welsh Pony arrived with The Quarryman into the FR platform while No.87 had already run round the recently arrived Snowdonia Star.

This easterly view (11/5/23) shows No.87 waiting to depart on the return working of the Snowdonia Star while Welsh Pony arrives with The Quarryman. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The Snowdonia Star departed on time at 14:05 and 5 minutes later Merddin Emrys had run round the Mountain Spirit ready for a slightly delayed 14:13 departure. This presaged more even action as Blanche shunted the Woodland Wanderer out of the yard and back into the FR platform, departing on time. Harlech Castle then appeared light engine in the WHR platform and Welsh Pony shunted The Quarryman out of the yard and back into the FR for the return working at 15:05. At 14:49 Harlech Castle set off light engine for Boston Lodge.

The Mountain Spirit returned led by Merddin Emrys into the WHR platform at 17:37 while Blanche waited in the yard with the ECS. The Fairlie ran to the fuelling point 5 minutes later via the FR platform road and the last move of the day was the ECS returning to Boston Lodge.

Model Railway event 20-21/5/23

There is a Model Railway Exhibition at the Gweithdy Minffordd on Saturday and Sunday 20-21/5/23. Prices of Bachmann Narrow Gauge items in the FR Webshop have dropped by 15% from 11/5/23. It is possible that a shuttle service might be offered between Porthmadog and Minffordd as previously when exhibitions have been held there.

British Orient Express cancelled by BREXIT

Belmond has cancelled the British leg of the Orient Express that ran from Victoria to Folkestone for 41 years. The coach link to Calais has become victim to the 'BREXIT Benefit' of increased checks on coach parties which might lead to delays and passengers potentially missing the Calais-Venice leg. There were huge queues at Dover for ferries at Easter which caused severe disruption to coach parties. Passengers will instead take a Eurostar to Paris where they will join the service. The exquisitely restored UK rake will continue to be used for premier dining services within the UK.

The Orient Express has had an intermittent history of operating from Victoria, along with the Night Ferry and using the former Dover Train Ferry to cross the English Channel. Once the Channel Tunnel was open the Orient Express operators Sea Containers put in a request for special dispensation to run the train through the Channel Tunnel as a through service but stringent fire regulations prohibited the operation through the 50km long tunnel. Some consideration was given to running the train into the Eurotunnel terminal and transferring passengers to road coaches for the short trip to the Calais terminal via passenger Shuttle, then sending the train through ECS. Using Eurotunnel's own coaching stock was not considered as Eurotunnel's coaches are attached to lorry Shuttles on a one coach per Shuttle basis.

For more details on the Dover-Dunkerque train ferry which operated 1936-1988 see Train Ferry website.

F&WHR 10/5/23

Wednesday 10/5/23 was a cloudy day with rain at times at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-13C. The F&WHR services were reorganised today with the Woodland Wanderer rake withdrawn and reshuffled yesterday evening for today's private train from Blaenau Ffestiniog in association the Snowdonia Statesman from Chesterfield (Blaenau Ffestiniog arr. 12:52/dep. 16:08). There is just one FR public service, the morning Mountain Spirit and three trains on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was still out of action for a second day.

The first train was No.87 on the 10:15 Aberglaslyn which was all ready to start in the WHR platform at 09:40. Merddin Emrys departed on time at 10:45 on the Mountain Spirit from the FR platform.

Blanche and Lyd were provided for today's special. The ECS was prepared in the FR platform at 11:30 to arrive in Blaenau Ffestiniog to meet the Snowdonia Statesman from Chesterfield arriving at about 13:00. Some passengers had opted for a trip on the FR. The 11 coach ECS departed at 11:39 and was likely booked to pass the returning Mountain Spirit at Tan-y-bwlch at 13:05.

Around midday Harbour Station's pointwork was inspected by the PW team.

The Aberglaslyn was back in Porthmadog at 13:00 and No.87 ran round for the 13:40 departure. At 14:00 the Fairlie ran round the returned Mountain Spirit and the train left ECS for the depot at 14:03 as the upper reaches of the FR were occupied by the special run in association with the Snowdonia Statesman. There are four similar Snowdonia Statesman workings between June and October from Hull, Kilmarnock, High Wycombe and Stevenage.

Mike Hart announces new rail link

Mike Hart OBE, who led the reconstruction of the WHR for many years, has also been involved with the Rother Valley Railway since at school. The railway has plans to reconnect Robertsbridge NR station with the Kent & East Sussex Railway. He has advised about the successful TWO application for the project.

The Transport and Works Act

Rother Valley Railway (Bodiam to Robertsbridge Junction) Order 9/5/23

The granting of the TWO is good news for the reconnection of the Kent and East Sussex Railway to the Network Rail main line at Robertsbridge (on the London-Hastings route) which will bring great economic benefit to the local area. Following the Public Inquiry in 2021, the Secretary of State for Transport has announced that he has decided to make the Order to enable completion of the railway. The decision is warmly welcomed by Rother Valley Railway and colleagues at Kent & East Sussex Railway. The RVR are looking forward to working with everyone to bring the new railway to fruition. So far sidings at Robertsbridge have been completed and track up to the A21 level crossing. There is a short gap to remake across a few fields from the level crossing to the nearest point on the K&ESR where that line currently terminates.

Work will start at the earliest opportunity to carry out the land and ecological surveys. Substantive physical works are unlikely to start before next year. Once the reconnection is complete, visitors from all over the country will be able to come to Robertsbridge by mainline railway before boarding a Kent and East Sussex Railway heritage train to visit Bodiam Castle, Tenterden Town and other local attractions.

While it has taken 5 years for the TWO process, the RVR is looking forward to working with others to get the job done and the reopening of the Kent and East Sussex Railway through to Robertsbridge Junction Station.

See Rother Valley Railway Order for full details.

Llangollen Railway Corwen Official Opening 1/6/23

The Llangollen Railway will complete and open its railway to Corwen on 1/6/23. The railway previously ran to a temporary platform at Corwen East but services were cut back to Carrog in recent years while the permanent Corwen station was completed with an island platform, siding and signalbox. The station ticket office is in the car park and a chairlift is provided for disabled access to the station. The new Corwen station is situated right next to the large (paid) town centre car park, public conveniences and bus exchange.

A low under bridge to the west of the headshunt precluded further extension but this has been removed. If the road was built up to the level of the railway, the LR could be extended further towards Bala, but the company has no desire to extend in either direction despite the railway's Rolltrack group clearing the yard at Ruabon station many years ago. The railway has bounced back well from its insolvency and fire sale of rolling stock and 2023 should be best year yet since reopening under new Trust management. See Llangollen Railway for full details.

Press release

Volunteers and other project supporters are very excited to be able to celebrate the opening of the Llangollen Railway’s Corwen station on the 1/6/23, with a formal opening event on Friday 2/6/23. Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill (Chairman of both Network Rail and the Heritage Railway Association) will be performing the station opening ceremony. The opening trains on the 2/6/23 are scheduled to be worked by Kitson 0-4-0ST Austin 1, one of the original Llangollen Railway steam fleet, top and tailed with visiting Austerity No.68067.

Saturday 3/6/23 and Sunday 4/6/23 will then be a two-day public gala event. An intensive public timetable will operate a 3-train service of steam, diesel and railcar workings (each train working two return trips to Corwen each day). Locomotives and railcars are expected to be drawn from Austerity No.68067, Class 31 No.31271, Class 47 1566 (47449) and DMUs from Classes 104, 108 & 109.

A range of attractions are planned in Corwen alongside show-casing the superb new station, including model railway layouts in the town community centre and museum. The Liverpool Model Railway Society will be exhibiting their layout 'Corwen' in the community centre and there is a 4mm scale model of sections of the Llangollen Railway in the museum. Dapol and Rails of Sheffield will also be making an exciting announcement about a forthcoming new 4mm scale model that should be of great interest to both Llangollen Railway and GWR fans alike.

There will also be a display of heritage memorabilia in the Henry Robertson suite at Llangollen station across all 4 days of the event. A talk will be held on the evening of Thursday 1/6/23 by renowned local archaeologist Fiona Gale MBE entitled 'Denbigh, Ruthin & Corwen Railway in the Vale of Clwyd' (Approximately 50 tickets at £5 each will be available). A vintage fire engine will also be on display at Llangollen station, with grateful thanks to Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service.

LR Trust Manager Tom Taylor says “We are all tremendously excited at the prospect of seeing Corwen station opened for its first public trains. This represents the culmination of many years of hard work by a small, but extremely dedicated team of volunteers. We are all very proud of what they have achieved through some very challenging circumstances. We are also very grateful to all those who have supported the project financially, including grants from the Welsh Assembly and UK Governments. Our local authorities and MPs have also supported us from the get-go. From the 3/6/23, all our services will be running to Corwen and we look forward to welcoming passengers, friends and volunteers to our superb new station as well as putting Corwen back on the railway map, where the town very much deserves to be”.

F&WHR 9/5/23

Tuesday 9/5/23 was a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 10-15C. With the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend over, F&WHR services reverted to normal with 5 trains on the FR (including The Quarryman) and the two through trains on the WHR.

The first train today was Harlech Castle hauling the S&T train with the FR Mess Car which arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 10:21, leaving 3 minutes later towards the east. The train shunted into the westbound platform at 10:28 and then entered the yard.

This westerly view (9/5/23) shows Harlech Castle with the S&T rake at Tan-y-bwlch. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Merddin Emrys hauled the first passenger working through Tan-y-bwlch at 11:19. The well loaded Mountain Spirit departed for Blaenau Ffestiniog at 11:31. Lyd was next arriving at 11:48 with the well loaded Woodland Wanderer. Welsh Pony (stabled at Glan-y-pwll) arrived 12:17 with The Quarryman heading for Porthmadog. The train departed after 1 minute with several PW workers on board. Lyd then ran round and followed towards Porthmadog at 12:50.

Down at Porthmadog at 13:30 No.130 had run round the Snowdonia Star ready for the return working at 14:05. Meanwhile Lyd was shunting the Woodland Wanderer into the sidings in the yard. This allowed Merddin Emrys to run into the FR platform at 13:44 with the returning Mountain Spirit.

The signal box at Harbour Station managed the arrival of two trains at once at 16:41 with No.87 arriving on the returning Harbourmaster as Lyd crossed The Cob with the returning Woodland Wanderer. The Garratt headed off with the ECS to the depot at 16:49. Lyd ran round at 16:58 and moved the open coach to the Sea Wall siding to reform a 6 coach rake in the FR platform.

This easterly view (9/5/23) shows No.87 arriving with The Harbourmaster simultaneously with Lyd arriving with the Woodland Wanderer. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The Fairlie arrived back at 17:05 into the WHR platform and promptly ran to the yard while Lyd reversed its rake into the FR platform. At 17:15 Lyd shunted the Open Coach to the yard for a second time before rejoining the rake in the FR platform. It then hauled that ECS back to the depot at 17:22. At 17:25 the Fairlie ran round and departed at 17:34 to close the day's activities.

The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was out of action in the afternoon.

Gelert 70!

The WHHR's Bagnall 0-4-2 steam loco Gelert carried a 70th birthday headboard at the start of May spanning the period 1953-2023. It was one of four 2' gauge locos built for the Rustenberg Platinum Mines of South Africa. The loco has a supportive Trust that organises its maintenance and operation. See Gelert Trust for more details.

Europe Day 9/5/23

Today is Europe Day and Ursula von der Leyen (EU President) is in Ukraine, which by presidential decree, is joining in continent wide celebrations. While the UK is still a part of Europe, we have erected artificial trading barriers by leaving the EU, which are damaging our economy.

Specifically for tourism (and the F&WHR), the lack of seasonal workers is making hospitality more difficult and securing grants for major projects nigh impossible. The BLR has found difficulty funding its extension into Bala Town Centre in addition to its difficulties with the SNPA planning. Funds that used to support major transport infrastructure (even the reopening of the WHR) are no longer available as the Trans European Network routes to Ireland now bypass the UK and use long sea connections!! Previously TEN funds supported the A55 dualling to Holyhead and rail improvements and might in the future have supported a Holyhead-Dublin rail tunnel.

Llangollen Garden Railway Festival Saturday 13/5/23

This event is on 10:30-16:00 at the Eisteddfod Showground, Abbey Road, Llangollen on Saturday and repeats a successful event started last year. With over 50 different traders, 10 layouts in various scales and gauges, a ride on live steam railway on site, possibly 2!, on site catering and parking, near a preserved railway, there will be a lot to enjoy on the day. All monies raised go to charity. For more information see the Llangollen Garden Railway Festival website.

F&WHR 8/5/23

Coronation Bank Holiday Monday 8/5/23 was a cloudy and drizzly day with temperatures of 11-14C. The F&WHR offered four services to compete with the Volunteering Day/Coronation 'street parties'. The WHR offered just the Gelert Explorer.

Merddin Emrys was on the first train into Tan-y-bwlch at 11:25. The well loaded train departed 7 minutes later for Blaenau Ffestiniog in dismal conditions. Next up was Lyd which arrived at 11:53 with the Woodland Wanderer. Run round came at midday and the train departed on its return run to Porthmadog at 12:46. The train struggled back through increasingly murky weather arriving back in the WHR platform at 12:22. Merddin Emrys arrived back at a wet Tan-y-bwlch at 13:07 and proceeded to Porthmadog 6 minutes later arriving at 13:47.

At 13:50 a steam loco was noted shunting Boston Lodge. The 14:10 Mountain Spirit departed a little late at 14:13. Lyd then coupled up to the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer which left on time. The train arrived in a wet Tan-y-bwlch at 14:48 and departed for Blaenau Ffestiniog 5 minutes later.

Lyd arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:13 with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer which was unsurprisingly very lightly loaded considering the atrocious conditions. The loco ran round at 15:25 and departed for Porthmadog at 16:11 with the damp air making great condensation effects.

Merddin Emrys passed Tan-y-bwlch at 16:43 on the final train of the day, running about quarter of an hour late on its way back to Porthmadog through the rain.

Mountaineer Working Weekend at Glan-y-pwll

See the Friends of the F&WHR Facebook page for a set of videos showing shunting of Mountaineer and other locos in the newly repaired shed area at Glan-y-pwll depot, Blaenau Ffestiniog.

This weekend volunteers continued removing the oil firing equipment for future display off the locomotive:

The fittings will be overhauled before being refitted.

A few small house keeping tasks were attended to at Glan-y-Pwll, one to sort the Group's parts storage and to remove a water pipe from the system that was leaking.
There are plenty more jobs to do next time on and off Mountaineer. The next working party will be over the weekend of 3-4/6/23. Please email pbooth@ffwhr.com if you would like to help out. See the Alco 1265 Group Facebook page for further photos and details of the restoration of this iconic loco.

F&WHR 7/5/23

Sunday 7/5/23 was a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 11-13C. The F&WHR offered four services to compete with the Coronation 'street parties' and Windsor concert coverage. The FR has a single morning Mountain Spirit and the WHR just the Gelert Explorer. The loco detached and immediately ran to the yard to refuel and water.

At 10:25 Merddin Emrys was already run round in the FR platform ready for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit (the only train to Blaenau Ffestiniog today). Lyd arrived next at 10:35 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform.

The Fairlie arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:26, leaving 5 minutes later for Blaenau Ffestiniog. At 11:47 Vale of Ffestiniog dragged 3 B wagons out of the Harbour Station yard with loco ash. The train appeared to go into Boston Lodge rather than to Dduallt disposal point.

At 11:53 Lyd arrived with the well loaded Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 12:03 and headed back to Porthmadog at 12:46 with the return service arriving in the FR platform at 13:20. Meanwhile the Fairlie arrived back at 13:16 at Tan-y-bwlch and departed for Porthmadog 3 minutes later.

Hugh Napier was noted propelling FR wagon No.63 out Pen Cob and passing Minffordd at 13:34 in the capable hands of the GM. The Fairlie passed Minffordd at 13:43 heading for Porthmadog. Followed by 4 coal wagons presumably from Minffordd Yard at 13:54.

Blanche took a single loaded coal wagon out of Porthmadog yard towards Boston Lodge at 14:18. At 14:36 Lyd departed Porthmadog with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer and arrived at 15:12.

Hugh Napier arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:40 from the east and waited for the Woodland Wanderer to depart at 16:10. Lyd arrived back at Porthmadog at 16:44, running round at 16:55 and hauling the ECS back to Boston Lodge at 16:59. Hugh Napier left Tan-y-bwlch at 16:37 with its short works train, passing Minffordd at 17:15. The train arrived at Pen Cob junction at 17:21 and reversed into Boston Lodge works to complete the movements for the day.

Bala Lake Railway to resubmit planning application for extension

Disappointed by the SNPA's rejection of its plan to extend from its current terminus into Bala Town Centre, the BLR has decided to resubmit its plan. The SNPA's peculiar decision was based upon concerns of additional tourists requiring more toilets and increasing phosphate levels in the Dee catchment area. The SNPA was also against the WHR restoration back in the 1990s. The BLR has already bought much of the land required for the extension and new town centre terminus and Welsh Water has already constructed part of the trackbed alongside Bala Lake for the railway free of charge as part of flood protection works.

F&WHR 6/5/23

Saturday 6/5/23 was a cloudy day with maximum temperatures of 10-16C. Six trains were offered today to provide an alterative to the Coronation spectacle, four on the FR (only one Mountain Spirit but The Quarryman also runs) and the two through trains on the WHR.

First train at Tan-y-bwlch was the heavily loaded Mountain Spirit which pulled in at 11:23 and continued on to Blaenau Ffestiniog 6 minutes later. There was only one Mountain Spirit today which accounts for why the train was packed. This was followed by the lightly loaded Woodland Wanderer which arrived at 11:50 hauled by Lyd.

At 12:30 No.143 from the recently arrived Snowdonia Star worked to the yard. At 12:40 the loco ran round the train ready for the 14:05 return service. Welsh Pony then arrived with The Quarryman in the FR platform and ran round at 12:53 for the 15:05 return working and shunted to the yard.

At 13:06 Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch with the returning Mountain Spirit. Four minutes later the train continued to Porthmadog. At 14:08 the Fairlie left the FR platform on the afternoon Mountain Spirit. Lyd ran round at 14:11 and shunted the afternoon Woodland Wanderer rake to the FR platform, leaving at 14:36. At 14:40 Welsh Pony shunted The Quarryman back into the FR platform for the 15:05 departure.

Lyd set off at 16:10 from Tan-y-bwlch on the return Woodland Wanderer. At 16:32 No.87 rolled slowly into Porthmadog WHR platform with the returning Harbourmaster and at 16:38 advanced to the starter after all the passengers were off. Lyd arrived at 16:41 into the FR platform allowing The Cob section to be cleared and the Garratt to leave with the ECS as Lyd ran round at 16:48. Lyd departed at 17:00 with the ECS to close the day.

Moving Pictures No.78 3/5/23

Click on the YouTube link to watch 41 minutes 17 seconds of video covering the FfR Society AGM which includes a trip on a gravity slate train and an update on David Lloyd George from Jon Whalley and Glenn Williams. This video was published on 3/5/23 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by John Wooden (F&WHR) on a professional 4K Betamax camcorder.

David Lloyd George update 3/5/23

The second Fairlie should soon be back in action relieving the load on Merddin Emrys. A new section of boiler plate on top of the firebox area was installed by Israel Newton of Matlock. The boiler was hydraulically tested and then steam tested on return a few days ago. New stays have been fitted around the firebox area. The power bogies are having a little attention. Ex SAR B wagons are used to store components like side tanks. The loco is receiving a paint/revarnishing job on its cab and boiler cladding and will join the fleet before the main summer peak.

Saving the Darjeeling tank

A group is trying to save the Darjeeling Tank loco that visited the F&WHR a few years ago for SuperPower. This is the only loco of its type to leave the DHR in India and there is a risk it will be exported to the USA in the June auction. See Darjeeling Tank website for full details. If it is retained in the UK the loco will be restored at Statfold Barn and may revisit the WHR at a future SuperPower event.

F&WHR 5/5/23

Friday 5/5/23 was a cloudy day with maximum temperatures of 11-16C. Today only two trains were scheduled, the two FR Woodland Wanderers.

The first train was a PW train hauled by Harlech Castle arriving at 09:50 from the Minffordd direction. At 10:02 the loco drew the wagons forwards and left the Mess Car in the station. The order of the hydraulic arm and empty wagon were reversed and the PW train reassembled by 10:11. The train headed off to the east by 10:52.

The loco shunted the tank wagon back to the siding at 12:23, ran round and departed with the returning Woodland Wanderer at 12:51 for Porthmadog.

Criccieth Castle appeared at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:01 from the east. Blanche arrived back at 15:11 on the well loaded afternoon Woodland Wanderer. The PW train advanced to the starter with the FR Mess coach a hydraulic arm and some cut up tree trunks. The train left for the shunt limit at 15:15 and Blanche ran round. The PW train then reversed back into the station before Blanche departed for Porthmadog at 16:10 with the returning Woodland Wanderer.

Harlech Castle reversed its train into the eastbound platform at 16:30 before departing at 16:37 for Minffordd.

Loco Roster w/c 6/5/23

This week's Loco Roster features SIX locomotives on passenger turns: On the Ffestiniog Railway - Merddin Emrys, Lyd and Welsh Pony will be working their usual selection of train services. On the Welsh Highland Railway - our working fleet of three NG/G16 Beyer-Garratts (Nos.87/130/143) can once again be seen in service during the week. The WHR roster for Wednesday-Friday does not currently specify which of the Garratts will be working train services on those days. Details will be updated as soon as they are known.

No.130 has been allocated to Tuesday 9/5/23 Snowdonia Star working.

F&WHR 4/5/23

Thursday was a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 11-18C at Porthmadog. There were six trains today with five on the FR including The Quarryman and just The Snowdonia Star on the WHR.

At 11.55 Criccieth Castle arrived at Harbour Station after crossing The Cob hauling the FR's Mess Car. The loco ran round at 12:00 in the FR platform. No.130 arrived at 12:19 with the Snowdonia Star into the WHR platform. At 12:35 the loco ran round after coaling and watering ready for the 14:05 return service. At 12:40 the works train reversed into the seawall siding to keep out of the way of the returning FR trains.

This easterly view (4/5/23) shows Harlech Castle arriving at Porthmadog at midday with a Works train. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

At 12:55 Welsh Pony ran round The Quarryman's 5 coach rake which had arrived a few minutes before, shunting it clear of the FR platform into the yard as two returning FR trains were due. At 13:20 Lyd arrived back in the FR platform with the Woodland Wanderer. At 13:29 there was further shunting in the yard, possibly Lyd moving its rake out of the FR platform to make space for the returning morning Mountain Spirit due 13:45, which rolled in on time.

At 14:50 Welsh Pony shunted The Quarryman back to the FR platform for the 15:05 departure. The Mountain Spirit left Porthmadog a little late passing Minffordd at 14:24 (still with scaffolding obstructing the webcam). Lyd followed with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer a little late at 14:52 and then Welsh Pony with the returning The Quarryman, over 20 minutes late at 15:37 (due to pass 15:15).

Lyd arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:32 and was shunted to the other platform at 16:00 to allow the following train to pass through at 16:08 and departing 8 minutes later some 36 minutes down. Lyd then ran round at 16:33 and departed at 16:39, arriving back at Porthmadog at 17:07 in the FR platform. Lyd ran round at 17:30 ready to haul the ECS back to Boston Lodge.

The returning Mountain Spirit departed Tan-y-bwlch at 17:07 and arrived back in the WHR platform at 17:39. The Fairlie waited in the WHR loop at 17:43 while Lyd departed with the ECS. Once the ECS was beyond the shunt limit the Fairlie was able to shunt to fuel and water in the yard. The ECS departed at 18:10 to close the day's activities at Porthmadog.

W&LR Gala 17-18/6/23

Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) will stage an Anniversary Gala weekend on June 17 and 18 to celebrate two significant events, one exactly twice as old as the other. On 6/4/63, 60 years ago, the W&LLR reopened as a heritage railway run by volunteers. Another 60 years and two days earlier, on 4/4/1903 the line had opened for the first time with much pomp and ceremony in both Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion.

The gala event will celebrate the line’s history and future. Without doubt, the highlight is set to be the return to service of 0-8-0T steam locomotive No.699.01 Sir Drefaldwyn, following a long overhaul delayed by such issues as the Covid pandemic.

This Llanfair Caereinion view (4/5/23) shows No.10 Sir Drefaldwyn preparing for duty. This image is copyright W&LLR. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The Anniversary Gala will also recall important parts of the W&LLR’s history and will include a return to the line for one of the first carriages secured by the preservationists. With the W&LLR’s own carriages having been scrapped in the 1930s, following the withdrawal of the passenger service, the new company had to look for stock and, in 1961, secured a set of very basic ‘toastrack’ carriages from the Upnor & Lodge Hill Railway, a naval line in Kent. Thanks to the S&KLR, one carriage will return to Wales to recreate the look of trains in the line’s earliest preservation years.

Other highlights of the weekend will include re-enactments of important events in the railway’s history. Among these are the cutting of the first sod ceremony and the chairman's speech on re-opening to a recreation of the jazz trains run in the 1980s and an evening dining train. It is also hoped to have other visiting vehicles on static display.

Trains will run between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinon throughout the weekend. Full details of the event and ticket booking facilities will be found on the railway’s website. F&WHR 3/5/23

Wednesday 3/5/23 was a day of sunny periods, 9-17C. Eight trains were planned, with 5 on the FR including The Quarryman and three on the WHR, including the two Aberglaslyn workings and The Gelert Explorer.

Merddin Emrys was first up today arriving at Tan-y-bwlch with the Mountain Spirit at 11:24. Lyd arrived at 11:54 with the morning Mountain Spirit. Welsh Pony arrived with The Quarryman at 12:14 and went forwards towards Porthmadog 3 minutes later. At 12:47 Lyd followed towards Porthmadog with the return working of the Woodland Wanderer.

By 14:24 Vale of Ffestiniog and a brake van arrived in the WHR platform after the 13:40 Glaslyn had departed for Beddgelert. The Funkey then headed towards Boston Lodge with its short works train. Lyd was back at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:17 with the lightly loaded afternoon Woodland Wanderer. After running round the loco propelled the rake to the other platform via the eastern shunt limit to make space for The Quarryman to pass through at 15:50 with Welsh Pony.

Down at Porthmadog No.87 rolled in at 16:23 on the returning Glaslyn working. Lyd arrived back at 16:44 into the FR platform and as soon as the signals cleared at 16:46 No.87 hauled the Glaslyn ECS back to the depot. Lyd ran round at 16:56 and departed with the ECS at 16:59.

The Fairlie arrived back at 17:18 into the FR platform with the afternoon Mountain Spirit and ran round at 17:34, departing with the ECS at 17:37 to close the day's activities.

SAR Class 91 news

Ex-SAR diesel loco No.91.016 (GE6819) is coming to the UK, although there is still work to do first and things in the railway world tend to happen at a glacial pace! It will be staying in its original form with full height and width bodywork, which will mostly limit it to ex-standard gauge formations. It is dual braked and whilst it currently has AAR knuckle couplers from its time on 3' 6" track it will be getting converted back to bell mouths in South Africa, then choppers when it comes to the UK. The loco is powerful enough to act as a thunderbird loco for the WHR and may fit the WHR loading gauge.

This South Africa view (2023) shows 91.016 stabled in South Africa at Sandstone Estates. It seems that this loco had a vacuum brake added later if the visible vacuum bag to the left of the coupler is anything to go by. This image is copyright Matt Dolby and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

This South Africa view (2023) shows 91.016's new number plates. This image is copyright Matt Dolby and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The loco is one of a fleet of twenty 2' gauge locos built in 1973 for SAR. These 48 tonne BoBo locos are capable of 30 mph. Their Caterpillar D379 diesel engines give a continuous output of 640hp (480 kW) and the 108kN tractive effort should be enough to restart a failed full length train on the 1 in 40 sections of the WHR. The locos were built for the Avontuur Lines but also worked on the ACR. The air braked loco would require the addition of vacuum brakes if it was to work on the WHR.

F&WHR 2/5/23

Tuesday 2/5/23 was a day of sunny periods with temperatures between 11 and 16C. Five trains are booked on the FR, including The Quarryman but just the two through trains on the WHR.

At 11:24 Merddin Emrys pulled into Tan-y-bwlch with the Mountain Spirit before departing at 11:30 for Blaenau Ffestiniog. This was followed at 11:52 by Lyd on the lightly loaded Woodland Wanderer. Welsh Pony passed through at 12:13 on The Quarryman from Blaenau Ffestiniog, pausing for just 2 minutes to exchange tokens. Lyd ran round and departed at 12:45 for Porthmadog.

At 13:00 No.87 had already run round in the WHR platform having arrived from Caernarfon with the 10:10 Snowdonia Star. At 13:20 Lyd ran into the FR platform with the return working of the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer before being shunted into the yard at 13:25 to clear the platform for the following Mountain Spirit.

Lyd arrived with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer at 15:07 and the loco promptly ran round. At 15:22 Lyd propelled the rake to the east Shunt Limit before drawing forward into the westbound platform. This allowed Welsh Pony to pass through with The Quarryman on its way back to Blaenau Ffestiniog at 15:45.

This westerly view (2/5/23) shows Welsh Pony passing Tan-y-bwlch with the returning The Quarryman. Lyd was waiting just out of view in the westbound platform having run round and shunted the rake to allow The Quarryman to pass. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a webcam. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

No.143 arrived at 16:30 with the returning The Harbourmaster. Lyd arrived back with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer at 16:46. After The Cob section was clear, the Garratt took the ECS Harbourmaster back to the depot. The final train of the day was the returning afternoon Mountain Spirit, which returned ECS to the depot around 17:30.

Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project Workshop

‘How Do Steam Engines Work?’

On Monday, 8/5/23, we will be hosting an exciting How do Steam Engines work? workshop at Boston Lodge.
Tickets for this workshop are priced at £50.00 per person, with a maximum of 12 places. Additional dates will be available during the year. This will be the first of a number of unique workshops running throughout 2023 and into 2024, all thanks to the Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project.
During this workshop, participants will discover the procedures used to get a Steam Loco up and running, from lighting the fire right through to all the controls used to manage the locomotive itself! Participants will also get a chance to work with an experienced driver and operate the controls to move the locomotive them self (and if lucky, a chance sound the whistle!).
The workshop will run from 10:10 - 13:45, starting and finishing at Porthmadog Harbour Station, where you will be met by an Event Leader who will give you an initial safety briefing before being taken to Boston Lodge on a scheduled train service.

Please Note: the nature of the workshop site and the locos themselves means that attendees must be able to walk across uneven surfaces and climb up and down into the locos. All attendees are asked to read the information on the Workshop webpage carefully and watch the Safety Briefing video, before booking their ticket/s.

F&WHR 1/5/23

Bank Holiday Monday 1/5/23 was a day of sunny periods with temperatures between 9 and 15C. Surprisingly only 5 trains were offered, the usual 4 on the FR and just the Gelert Explorer on the WHR. The Minffordd webcam continues to be obstructed by scaffolding.

First up was Merddin Emrys on the 10:45 Mountain Spirit which pulled into Tan-y-bwlch at 11:23 and departed towards Blaenau Ffestiniog at 11:32. Lyd arrived on the Woodland Wanderer at 11:47. The loco ran round 10 minutes later and departed at 12:56 for Porthmadog. At 13:04 the Fairlie arrived back in Tan-y-bwlch and departed for Porthmadog after 12 minutes.

At 14:05 the FR trains were back at Porthmadog with Lyd already on the front of the Woodland Wanderer in the WHR platform. Merddin Emrys coupled to the front of the 14:10 Mountain Spirit which left a couple of minutes late followed by the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer. The Fairlie arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 14:50 and departed for Blaenau Ffestiniog 7 minutes later. The Woodland Wanderer followed into Tan-y-bwlch at 15:09 and after the run round, left for Porthmadog at 16:10 with the returning Mountain Spirit following through Tan-y-bwlch at 16:38.

Lyd left the FR platform with the ECS from the Woodland Wanderer at 17:12 just after the Fairlie had arrived with the returning Mountain Spirit.

This easterly view (1/5/23) shows Merddin Emrys arriving at Harbour Station in strong sunshine with the returning 14:10 Mountain Spirit. Lyd was waiting just out of view in the FR platform for The Cob section to clear so that it could return the ECS from the Woodland Wanderer to Boston Lodge. Hospital stay 13/3/23-12/5/23

Your webmaster was in hospital from 13/3/23 for two months so news from 13/3/23 to the 10/4/23 was not updated systematically.

F&WHR 30/4/23

Sunday 30/4/23 was forecast to be a cloudy day with a rainy morning and temperatures of 10-12C. Eight public trains were planned in all with 5 on the FR and three on the WHR, one Gelert Explorer and two Glaslyn trains. Additional trains were planned for FRS members and some demonstration freights were also planned. First train of the day was Blanche with the gravity train, arriving Tan-y-bwlch at 09:07 which was destined for Dduallt.

Down in Porthmadog No.143 was rostered for the 10:15/ and Merddin Emrys departed at 10:47 on the morning Mountain Spirit and Lyd was lined up to follow from the WHR platform with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. At 11:05 a demonstration freight was shunting in the FR platform.

At 12:25 there was more light engine shunting in the yard at Porthmadog. At 13:17 Welsh Pony departed with a special FRS working while No.143 waited in the rain on the WHR platform for the afternoon Glaslyn working. Lyd arrived back at 13:30 with the morning Woodland Wanderer some 10 minutes late and the loco was then prepared for the afternoon working. No.143 departed at 13:42 for Beddgelert. Three minutes later Lyd backed onto the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer and at 14:55 the rake was reversed into the FR platform while Blanche ran round the rake in the WHR platform and worked to the fuelling point.

At 14:59 Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch with the afternoon Mountain Spirit. Lyd arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:24 with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. Welsh Pony arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:53 with an FRS special as Lyd had moved the Woodland Wanderer to the westbound platform.

Down at Porthmadog the Glaslyn turned up at 16:22 in the hands of No.87 as it appeared a loco swop had taken place at Beddgelert. Things were winding down at 16:48 with the arrival of Lyd into the FR platform allowing the Garratt to return ECS to the depot. This was followed by Lyd on the ECS at 17:00.

At Tan-y-bwlch the Fairlie passed through at 16:51 returning to Porthmadog with the afternoon Mountain Spirit. Blanche ran round at 16:57 and departed at 17:20 with the FRS special back to Porthmadog. At 17:29 the Fairlie arrived back in the WHR platform in the fog. Blanche returned at 17:55 allowing the Fairlie to depart with the ECS. The final move at 18:08 saw Blanche depart with the ECS.

F&WHR 29/4/23

Saturday 29/4/23 is forecast to be a day of sunny periods and temperatures of 10-14C. Six trains were planned with the usual four on the FR and the two long distance trains on the WHR. A number of gravity trains, FRS specials and small loco shunts were also planned.

This westerly view (29/4/23) shows Eigiau and Jenny stabled at Harbour Station ready to haul demonstration freights. The Friend of the FR Weekend limited trains to the FR unlike previous years when trips to Pont Croesor were allowed. As a result its seems the locos did not venture across Britannia Bridge which would have made a very attractive photo. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Blanche hauled the first train, the ECS for the gravity slate train, which arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 09:15. Next was a Garratt on the 10:05 Harbourmaster. Merddin Emrys was the 10:45 and was already in the platform and run round at 10:15 while the next loco was being prepped at Boston Lodge for the Woodland Wanderer. Lyd was in the FR platform with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer rake by 11:15 but had to wait for a small loco on a demonstration freight to shunt out of the yard and into the WHR loop line. The Mountain Spirit arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:39 followed by Britomart and Welsh Pony on the Woodland Wanderer at 12:18. The pair ran round at 12:30 and then shunted the rake to the departure track by 12:40, allowing Lyd to arrive at 12:40 on a FRS special working towards Blaenau Ffestiniog.

At 11:55 No.87 ran round on the Snowdonia Star having arrived earlier from Caernarfon in the WHR platform at Porthmadog. Meanwhile a small loco was shunting the yard with a demonstration freight. At 13:30 Blanche hauled the gravity train back up the line passing Tan-y-bwlch at 13:19. The Fairlie headed back through Tan-y-bwlch at 13:34 towards Porthmadog with the returning Mountain Spirit arriving there at 14:18 and running round promptly at 14:20 via the fuelling point. At 17:04 the Fairlie passed back through Tan-y-bwlch presumably with the late running Mountain Spirit.

F&WHR 28/4/23

Friday 28/4/23 was a cloudy day at Porthmadog with temperatures between 10-13C. There are just 2 trains scheduled today, the two FR Woodland Wanderer trains.

First train of the day was a PW train at 08:36 as Harlech Castle emerged from the yard with a loaded ballast wagon and headed east.

Lyd arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:47 with the morning Woodland Wanderer and departing to Porthmadog at 12:45.

At 13:32 the ballast wagon was propelled back into the station and the loco ran round at 13:35 and at 13:48 the train left towards Porthmadog. At 13:53 the KMX tamper arrived in Tan-y-bwlch from the east and departed for Minffordd Yard at 14:14.

This westerly view (28/4/23) shows the KMX tamper heading west after working somewhere east of the Tan-y-bwlch. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to enlarge to full size where available. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Lyd arrived back at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:12 with the busy afternoon Woodland Wanderer. The train headed back to Porthmadog at 16:12 and was noted being disposed in the Carriage Shed at Boston Lodge at 17:15.

Sunak dismisses Senedd's HS2 concerns

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has addressed the Welsh Tories Spring Conference and dismissed the concerns of the Senedd (including all the Tory members) and states that HS2 will benefit North and Mid Wales with connections from Crewe and Birmingham. In fact there are NO direct services to either area so the PM's comment is disingenuous. Passengers arriving by HS2 at Crewe will have to change to a North Wales train and walk between the two stations. Passengers arriving by HS2 at Curzon Street will have to walk to New Street to catch a connection for Mid Wales.

The Curzon Street terminus in particular is an example of not learning the lessons of history. Building it as a terminus station means it will cause nuisance to connecting travellers as did the former L&B and Grand Junction terminus on the same site that was replaced after several years by New Street through station. These changes in Crewe and Birmingham will easily cancel any savings made by fast running on HS2 and passengers may choose to stay on trains to Euston via the historic route. Transfer of long distance services through Rugby to HS2 may indeed release capacity on the Rugby route and permit the establishment of new through services such as the Cambrian Coast Express, possibly with loco hauled stock!

Next week's loco roster

Next week's Loco Roster features 8 locomotives on passenger turns and 2 visiting locos in action:

On the Ffestiniog Railway - Merddin Emrys, Lyd, Blanche, Welsh Pony and Britomart will be working a variety of trains between them.

On the Welsh Highland Railway - the working fleet of three NG/G16 Beyer-Garratts (Nos.87/130/143) can all be seen in service during the week.
Visiting locos - Jenny (from the Richmond Light Railway) and Eigiau (from the Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway) will be bustling around Harbour Station over the weekend, shunting wagons and entertaining visitors.

Train services on Saturday and Sunday include a number of special trains for Ffestiniog Railway Society members only. There are also three gravity slate trains running over the weekend. Timetables (plus other information on loco and stock diagrams) can be downloaded from https://bit.ly/FRS-AGM-2023.

F&WHR 27/4/23

Thursday 27/4/23 was a cloudy day at Porthmadog with temperatures between 10-13C. There were five trains planned today with four on the FR and unusually just a Snowdonia Star from Caernarfon. |Caernarfon is to receive more promotional effort from the F&WHR as the Snowdonia Star last year ran at 60% of the bookings of The Harbourmaster despite regular coach parties and being well within 1 hour drive of the popular North Wales coast resorts and under 2 hours from north west conurbations of Merseyside and Manchester. The F&WHR is investing in improved signage in Caernarfon town centre directing people to the station and new Slate Quay development. There will also be a radio and internet campaign. Maybe some good old fashioned timetable leaflets in garages, hotels, cafes and restaurants would help?

First train today was a PW train with Upnor Castle which arrived at Tan-y-Bwlch at 10:23 with a B wagon, a coach and a large tank wagon, followed by some shunting of the yard. At 11:25 the diesel propelled the tank wagon into the yard.

This northerly view (27/4/23) shows Upnor Castle with a short PW train. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to enlarge to full size where available. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:29 with the late running 10:45 Mountain Spirit departing at 11:34 for Blaenau Ffestiniog. At 11:47 Upnor Castle was reversing the rake into the westbound platform. The rake consisted of a B wagon contained kindling and caster oil. At 11:53 Lyd arrived with the morning Woodland Wanderer and at 12:02 the PW train left towards Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Down at Porthmadog The Snowdonian had arrived in the WHR platform around 12:30 and the loco detached and went to fuel and water. After arriving back around 13:20 Lyd shunted its rake to the yard at 13:25 to make space for the returning Mountain Spirit.

There seemed to be a problem with the 14:05 return working of the Snowdonia Star. No.130, carrying the Snowdonia Star headboard, was still present in the WHR platform at 14:20 while staff checked the vacuum connections. Meanwhile Lyd shunted the afternoon Woodland Wanderer back into the FR platform. Lyd departed at 14:39 a few minutes late.

Another loco swop must have occurred at Beddgelert yesterday as No.143 was operating out of Porthmadog on 26/4/23. There seemed to be a major problem obtaining a vacuum as at 15:00 staff were continuing to check coach connections almost an hour after departure time. A rescue loco did not appear to be available. The train eventually left at 15:24, some 80 minutes late. The train was likely to get back to Caernarfon at about 17:45.

Lyd departed Tan-y-bwlch at 16:10 returning to Porthmadog on the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. The Fairlie arrived back at Tan-y-bwlch at 16:32 on the return working of the Mountain Spirit and departed towards Porthmadog at 16:34.

The last working of the day was probably No.130 returning ECS from Caernarfon to Dinas after a very late running return from Porthmadog on the Snowdonia Star possibly as a result of coach connection vacuum problems.

North Wales main line 27/4/23

The Borderlands Line finally burst into life with its new Class 230 service at Easter with a fitful start on 3/4/23. Some days a replacement bus has provided one of the two trains booked to operate the hourly timetable. Trains are sometimes late or cancelled but at least the displays advise of this. Sampling the service on 27/4/23 No.230010 was noted passing Buckley at 07:55 on time with the 07:35 Wrexham-Bidston. These trains are converted aluminium bodied Metropolitan D78 stock and due to the TfW contract are being maintained at Bidston, have survived the recent collapse of manufacturers VivaRail which has led to the similar Bedford-Bletchley service being suspended.

Senedd calls for HS2 to be designated 'England Only project'!

All 60 members of the Senedd yesterday backed a motion from which called "on the UK Government to redesignate HS2 as an 'England-only project', and provide Wales with the resultant consequentials it is rightfully owed”. HS2 will not provide any Holyhead services so the North Wales Coast will not benefit from HS2. Wales, already the UK nation with the most underfunded rail infrastructure, is thought to be due billions in extra cash if an equitable settlement were to be made.

Such funds could redouble the nuisance missing few miles of the Wrexham-Chester line on Gresford Bank, restore the Afonwen-Caernarfon link and the Aberystwyth-Carmarthen link and provide much needed line speed and signalling improvements on the North Wales Coast Line.

Fos-y-fran coal stopped again 26/4/23

Supplies of steam coal from the UK's only supply stopped today after permission to extends its extraction licence for a further year was denied by the Welsh Government. The F&WHR operates on mixtures of coal and ovoids and has been successful in finding adequate blends. See BBC story.

Boston Lodge reconstruction Spring update

G.H.James were off site by the end of March having completed the ground works for the Small Loco Shed (SLS). They are being replaced by J. Lloyd of Ruthin who are erecting the galvanised steelwork and roller doors after they finish Glan-y-pwll loco shed reroofing for the Mountaineer refurbishment team. However first they will complete work on the Coachworks extension which will provide a woodworking machine shop and timber storage area. The new building is being constructed on the site of the old timber store and an unused triangular space between the Carriage Works and the Carriage Shed. Most of the steel columns have been erected and the concrete 'plank' sections that form the lower walls were mostly delivered just before the start of the season in March.

Trackwork for the SLS, including new points, is already on hand for fitting later as a volunteer project along with casting of the final concrete floor. One surprise is that the shed will be able to accommodate Garratt locos so the roller doors will need to be larger to allow for the larger profile. The status of the proposed single road Garratt Shed and its existing pit between the SLS and the old shed must now be in question if the SLS can accommodate a Garratt.

Spring will see the start of guided tours of the Boston Lodge site which be organised around all the contractors' needs and the various excavations.

F&WHR 26/4/23

Wednesday 26/4/23 was a cloudy day at Porthmadog with temperatures between 10-13C. There were seven trains planned today with three on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and a Gelert Explorer.

At 10:28 Lyd was arriving in the WHR platform with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer while Merddin Emrys was prepared with the 10:45 Mountain Spirit rake in the FR platform. The Fairlie arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:18 and continued towards Blaenau Ffestiniog at 11:26. Lyd arrived with the lightly loaded Woodland Wanderer at 11:43. The train departed for Porthmadog after the customary hour break at 12:45.

No.143 arrived back in the WHR platform at 11:54 with the well loaded 10:15 Glaslyn service. The loco was detached and ran to water and refuel. The loco was back on the front of the afternoon Glaslyn and carried the headboard at 13:15 as Lyd arrived in the FR platform with the returning morning Woodland Wanderer. Lyd ran round at 13:36 after coaling and watering. As No.143 was Dinas based last Saturday so a loco swop must have occurred at Beddgelert earlier this week.

The Fairlie was back in the WHR platform with the returned morning Mountain Spirit shortly after the 13:45 left for Beddgelert. The loco went to coal and water in the yard.

Lyd arrived back at Tan-y-bwlch at 15:17 with a lightly loaded Woodland Wanderer and departed again for Porthmadog at 16:10 after the timetabled hour wait. The Glaslyn was back in the WHR platform by 16:30 and was soon disposed ECS to the depot. The afternoon Mountain Spirit was back by 16:20 in the WHR platform and the loco was in the yard refuelling. The ECS departed at 17:31 to close the day's activities.

Catering reintroduced on the WHR

The hamper service is back again this year on the WHR but additionally the WHR through trains and the Gelert Explorer will have on board catering trolleys. Experience tells us that the trolley service can take until Rhyd Ddu to service the whole length of the train starting from the Observation Car/Service Car when the train is busy. The FR will not have catering trolleys. Afternoon Tea is also bookable for First Class passengers.

Hop on-hop off conditions

This year 'hop on/hop off' travel is allowed for WHRSoc members and the general public on all trains except the Woodland Wanderer. One coach is designated in each train for the purpose and the guard will generally find a seat for such passengers if they can. The only condition is that if a passenger is joining at the start or terminus, they book a seat. This can be done in the last few minutes before departure so should not cramp the 'hop on-hop off' experience too much.

Carriage programme

WHR Pullman No.2115 Bodysgallen will be restored this year and there is a chance work will start on restoring the combination coach No.1001 which is the WHR Mess Car.

MicroETS installation

Following successful testing of the Porthmadog-Rhyd Ddu installation, micro ETS machines are now in place for Dinas-Waunfawr and Waunfawr-Rhyd Ddu (thereby ruling out for the foreseeable future the Plas-y-nant section and loop of the original plan). The new units will not be commissioned until the matching signals are installed and tested. A unit for Dinas-Caernarfon is in store but installation will be some time coming as resources are on a premium and changes are envisaged at Dinas. A more practical Carriage Shed is envisaged at Dinas. The Boston Lodge shed has proved the value of a two ended shed and so the long abandoned plan to provide points at the north end of the Carriage Shed might be revisited.

F&WHR 25/4/23

Tuesday 25/4/23 was forecast to be a day of sunny periods and 5-11C temperatures. Six passenger trains were planned today with two on the WHR. The first train of the day was The Harbourmaster with the ECS arriving at 09:29 into the WHR platform. Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:21 with the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. This was followed by Lyd at 11:49 with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer.

After Lyd departed with the return service at 12:46 from the eastbound platform, Merddin Emrys arrived back from Blaenau Ffestiniog at 13:07 and departed for Porthmadog at 13:13 to make an afternoon run.

At 14:18 Lyd propelled the Woodland Wanderer train back into the FR platform ready for the 14:35 departure after the 14:10 had departed with the Mountain Spirit.

This northerly view (25/4/23) shows Lyd being serviced at the Porthmadog refuelling point ready for the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. Merddin Emrys is also being serviced for the afternoon Mountain Spirit. Staff are loading coal from ex-SAR wagon No.1848. At 16:30 the Fairlie rolled back into Tan-y-bwlch with the returning Mountain Spirit, departing for Porthmadog at 16:36. No.143 arrived back with The Harbourmaster at 16:37. Lyd arrived back at Porthmadog at 16:43 allowing The Cob signal to clear and The Harbourmaster ECS to depart at 16:45. The Fairlie rolled into the FR platform at Porthmadog at 17:12 and after fuelling and watering ran round at 17:25. The ECS departed for the depot at 17:27 to close the day's activities.

The Snowdonian YouTube 25/4/23

Click on the YouTube link to watch 35 minutes 59 seconds of video of The Snowdonian, which ran on Saturday 22/4/23, throughout its journey with extensive drone footage. There was a rare moment at lunchtime when all three working Garratts were present at Rhyd Ddu briefly with No.130 presumably coming up from Dinas with No.87 on the Gelert Explorer to join The Snowdonian. After a dull start the sun came out later in the day. This video was published in 25/4/23 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by John Wooden (F&WHR) on a professional 4K Betamax camcorder.

NG15 No.134 Spring update 22/4/23

This northerly view (22/4/23) shows No.134 outside the Loco Shed at Dinas with its tender and wooden mock up cab. The loco is slowly but surely nearing completion. Maybe No.134 will be booked for next year's Snowdonian if it is completed in time. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to enlarge to full size where available. This image is copyright Clive Briscoe and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Adrian Strachan (NG15 No.134 Project Leader) reports:

During March & April we have held several volunteer working parties and made solid progress mainly focused on the loco, but some works on the tender too.
Much time has been spent, and swarf created! In finishing the boiler mountings at the smokebox saddle, diaphragm plate, and rear expansion brackets, in addition to reworking the barrel crinolines and constructing the crinoline cradle around the firebox. These are not yet complete but well on their way. The smokebox door baffle plate has been fitted and the ashpan drench pipework manufactured ready for fitting underneath the firebars of the rocking grate.

Once Garratt No.87 was mobile from the pit after its winter work we were able to access No.134 from underneath and assemble the overhauled brake gear pull rods, cross-shaft & cylinder and new brake blocks, and conduct an inspection.
The staff at Dinas have been understandably focused on getting NGG16 Garratt locos Nos.87/130/143 ready to haul the WHR services this season, but as of this weekend all 3 are now available for traffic so we expect that more time can be allocated to our hero in the coming weeks.

Amongst the Garratt work we are grateful that the machinists have managed to complete No.134's crossheads, slide bars, pistons and connecting rods and they are all now mounted for final setup. Our new piston valves were delivered last weekend by the volunteer who has machined them and these are now ready for the rings to be fitted and set up once the rest of the valve gear is assembled. Boston Lodge is busy manufacturing a brake support bracket for the tender and will hopefully move onto the new cab roof in May. The replacement casting for the combined blastpipe, ejector & blower has been ordered.

Whilst there is understandably a focus on the loco itself since the boiler returned, in parallel we have now completed all modifications to the tender water tank and this is now sealed and ready for a fill test. The vacuum reservoirs have been leak tested and the reservoir and train pipe runs along the underside of the tank worked up.

We're nearly there! This wouldn't be possible without the generous support of donors and dedicated volunteers. If you would like to support this exciting project as it enters the home straight, please visit https://whrsoc.org.uk/.../join-the.../donations-and-legacies.

F&WHR 24/4/23

Monday 24/4/23 was a day of cloud and drizzle with a maximum temperature of 9C forecast at Porthmadog. Monday was one of those rare days when no passenger trains were booked to operate as Mondays are thought to be a day people travel to/from holidays in North Wales. Nevertheless Blanche turned up at Tan-y-bwlch at 12:37 with a 3 coach rake including No.124 and Obs. Car No.152 Eryri.

The train departed towards Blaenau Ffestiniog at 12:51 with a well loaded Observation Car. The train returned at 15:37 before departing at 16:14 towards Porthmadog. Blanche ran round at Porthmadog at 16:59 before departing with the ECS for Boston Lodge at 17:03 with Upnor Castle on the rear (possibly after a coal wagon delivery-unfortunately users can no longer roll back time on the Porthmadog webcam to check).

F&WHR 23/4/23

Sunday 23/4/23 was a day of cloud and drizzle with a maximum temperature of 10C forecast at Porthmadog. Four trains were booked to operate today with the Gelert Explorer on the WHR.

Merddin Emrys passed through Tan-y-bwlch at 11:22 on the Mountain Spirit followed by Lyd arriving at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:49 with the lightly loaded Woodland Wanderer.

Spring Snow forecast!

A Spring cold snap is forecast to deliver snow to parts of North Wales on Bank Holiday Monday 1/5/23 although temperatures could reach 14C over the weekend in advance of the cold snap. The F&WHR plan to run 5 trains on that day.

The Snowdonian YouTube 22/4/23

Click on the YouTube link to watch 35 minutes 59 seconds of video of The Snowdonian passing Dinas This video was published in 22/4/23 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by Clive Briscoe on a phone camera.

The Snowdonian 22/4/23

The Snowdonian through train operated on both the FR and WHR on 22/4/23. Welsh Pony and Lyd hauled the train to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back. Garratt No.143 took over at Pen Cob Halt for the through run at Porthmadog. Unfortunately the headboard was not transferred from Welsh Pony and caught up with the train later!

On the WHR No.130 led No.143 with the water carrier between them on the return journey, joining the train at Rhyd Ddu and dropping off there on the return. Presumably the loco returned to Dinas at the end of the day. The rebuilding of Plas-y-nant bridge should have obviated the need to space out the two Garratts like this but there may be another location that limits close coupling of the double headed Garratt heavyweights. The water wagon or another wagon with sprung drawbars between the NG16s is the best practice as it damps surges between locos thereby extending the life of the bogie pivot bearings.

F&WHR 22/4/23

Saturday 22/4/23 was a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with temperatures of 9-10C. The Snowdonian special ran today with No.130/No.143 double heading from Porthmadog to Caernarfon and back in the afternoon, The train was expected back in Porthmadog by 19:00 after a lunch break at Waunfawr Snowdonia Parc and high tea with cakes on the return run.

New Headboards 22/4/23

The first of several cast metal named train headboards was carried by the Mountain Spirit recently. All of the previously carried wooden headboards are being replaced with better looking metal castings. Coaches have the smaller wooden destination boards and one coach in each rake is designated for 'hop on-hop off' traffic (except for the Woodland Wanderer).

Cambrian Coast Express 21/4/23

Pathfinders ran a CCE from Bristol to Pwllheli on 21/4/23. For a change 37302 and Colas liveried 37254 were used with the NR ERTMS fitted loco always on the front. The bridge will be closed this autumn for the third year running for final repair of the steel spans so this is the last CCE of this season.

Outstanding works

The Winter Works programme overran a little with the Beddgelert toilet upgrade not complete and some works on Harbour Station and Minffordd station.

Corwen Central station to open 2/6/23

With work on the overall roof canopy nearing completion and fitting out of the platform buildings progressing well, the Llangollen Railway has announced 2/6/23 as the opening date of the extension from Carrog. Various items of rolling stock have been run through the platforms for clearance testing including most of the diesel locos.

Work on the railway's Class 03 (03162) has recently restarted and it is hoped to return the much loved loco to service in 2025. See the Wirral Globe story.

For more details see Llangollen Railway Facebook Page.

F&WHR 21/4/23

Friday 21/4/23 was a grey day at Porthmadog with temperatures in the range 8-13C. There were only two trains today as Friday is considered a day tourists travel to the area. Lyd was on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer and this train runs again at 14:35. Blanche ran shuttles to Boston Lodge and continued to Minffordd where run round occurred.

General Manager's Update Spring 2023

Click on the YouTube link to watch 25 minutes 3 seconds of a report by the F&WHR GM Spring 2023. This video was published in 21/4/23 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by John Wooden (F&WHR) on a professional 4K Betamax camcorder.

The GM explained how it was essential to cover train costs, roughly £3,000 for an FR train and £5,000 for an WHR train. The current policy of running named trains and seeking to fill them with full length journey bookings will continue as this has been shown to maximise revenue. The timetable has been set out with a minimum service indicted and the optional extra repeat trains shown differently.

Rather surprisingly the service level is only reviewed on a monthly basis to see how many repeat trains are justified on any day according to traffic. This interval allows staff rosters to be made well in advance but does not give the flexibility to respond to sudden surges in demand.

David Lloyd George is expected back in service in a few weeks following return of the boiler after an unexpected 9 year refurbishment proved necessary. There were problems with the stays. The return of this loco to traffic will ease the large loco availability on the FR.

Bala Extension planning disappointment

Planning permission for the BLR's extension into a new Bala Town station has been denied by the SNPA. This is despite the terminus site and much of the approaching route having been purchased by the BLR and Welsh Water having recently completed much of the alignment as part of its Bala Flood protection works at the east end of Bala Lake. Many residents and holidaymakers might find the reasons given for the refusal as nonsensical. The BLR is said to have spent as much as £1.4 million on the project.

Apparently SNPA (which also opposed the WHR back in the 1990s) does not wish to encourage tourism as it will increase the number of visitors and then the phosphate loading on sewers and rivers. This despite tourism being a major part of the North Wales and SNPA area economy. The main phosphate load on sewers, drains and the Dee Valley river system is likely to be from agriculture in the form of fertiliser run off from farming and animal husbandry, not seasonal tourists.

Another question must be asked about the common sense of the SNPA. What sort of percentage increase were they imagining the BLR would achieve with its new Bala Town terminus? The BLR is hardly in the same league as the F&WHR and is very quiet for much of the year. Even if traffic doubled it seems unlikely this would strain the local sewage works! Let's see if the Planning Officer applies this Phosphate Restriction to every new farm development...the NFU would be up in arms!!

See BLR News story for more details dated 20/4/23. Some supporters are convinced that had EU funding been available the extension would have been open by now.

The Snowdonian 22/4/23

The expensive through train special runs on Saturday 22/4/23. The train starts from Porthmadog and makes a run up to Blaenau Ffestiniog behind Welsh Pony and Merddin Emrys. After returning to Porthmadog, No.143 will take the train forwards to Caernarfon and it has now been confirmed that No.130 will be ready in time to double head. See F&WHR website for full details.|

Minffordd works 21/4/23

Scaffolding has been erected around part of Minffordd station building. It partly obscures the Minffordd webcam.

Small locos offer FR footplate rides 22/4/23

Three small engines - BRITOMART, JENNY and EIGIAU - will be heading to Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday, ahead of The Snowdonian special. They will stay there to entertain passengers from the special and the general public while the train locos are serviced, before the trio head down the line to Tan-y-Bwlch. The locos will be providing footplate rides for visitors to Tan-y-Bwlch Station between 12:00 and 14:00 (approximately). There is no charge for a footplate ride, although donations towards the cost of coal etc are always welcomed. Tan-y-Bwlch Tea Room will be open as usual - from 10:00-16:00.

The three locos will leave Boston Lodge around 07:30 on Saturday - passing through Minffordd (07:40) and Tan-y-Bwlch (08:20) to reach Blaenau Ffestiniog around 09:10. Footplate rides will be available in Blaenau Ffestiniog between 09:30 and 10:40. The Snowdonian special arrives in Blaenau Ffestiniog around 09:50 and departs at 10:25 The three small locos leave Blaenau at 11:00, arriving Tan-y-Bwlch around 11:45. Following footplate ride duties, the trio leave Tan-y-Bwlch at 14:10 and head back to Boston Lodge, arriving there around 14:55 - having been passed by the Woodland Wanderer service in Minffordd Station at 14:45.

Reconnect Welsh Railways petition

A new Welsh Senedd Petition has been launched to reopen the Bangor-Afonwen and Aberystwyth-Carmarthen routes thereby creating a North-South rail link wholly within Wales and giving new travel opportunities to the poorly served west coast of Wales. The current rail link goes into England at Chester and again south of Shrewsbury. Some recent suggestions to alter the route proposals will avoid impacting the preserved Gwili Railway by running on a new alignment south from Lampeter via Ffarmers and Talley to Llandovery, a route proposed several times in the 1800s and early 1900s. This route would produce shorter journey times to Swansea/Cardiff than the original TRAWS proposals via Carmarthen.

Will TfW hire the Nova 3 Transpennine rakes?

Trans-Pennine Express loses its contract on 28/5/23 amidst huge public disquiet about the poor quality of its services and cutbacks on its premier loco hauled services between Liverpool and the North-East. The new build Nova 3 rakes are likely to be available for long term hire coupled with adapted Class 68 locos in the garish TP livery.

With TfW struggling to provide even a minimum out and back loco hauled premier service between Holyhead and Cardiff and having withdrawn the midday turn in favour of strengthening the new intensive Swansea/Cardiff-Manchester loco hauled trains, an opportunity has arisen to provide a proper North-South service that North Wales deserves. These trains could also rebuild the popular crowd buster services that until recently served Holyhead-Manchester/Birmingham. WAG's apparent bias in favour of loco hauled services for South Wales has been raising increasing concerns for North Wales residents in recent months.

Appeal for volunteer photos 19/4/22

Paul Lewin (F&WHR GM) is looking for some help with images. We are creating a new brochure to use on our trains to encourage new members and volunteers. We are looking for good images of the railway showing our people at work. We would like the emphasis on the people more than the trains and to show the diverse nature of our team. Can you help? Do please message me if you have images that fit the bill that you are prepared to let us use.

Funkey substitutions 8-19/4/23

This easterly view (19/4/23) shows Lyd and Vale of Ffestiniog hauling the afternoon Glaslyn Explorer vice No.87, crossing Britannia Bridge. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to enlarge to full size where available. This image is copyright F&WHR and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

No.87 has not always been available at Boston Lodge over the Easter period. On 19/4/23 the Glaslyn Explorer was hauled by Lyd and Vale of Ffestiniog replacing No.87. Again on 11/4/23 The Harbourmaster was hauled by the same pairing northbound passing the Snowdonia Star with No.143 in charge at Rhyd Ddu in poor weather conditions. This followed an incident on 8/4/23 when the two Funkeys were required to substitute from Beddgelert on the return working of the Snowdonia Star due, it is rumoured, to an ash pan issue and the potential for forest fires in the Beddgelert Forest.

FRS weekend visitors 29-30/4/23

A 1921 Arnold Jung 0-4-0T Jenny arrived at the Festiniog Railway for their Society weekend from the Richmond Vale Railway on 19/4/23. Eigiau also arrived from the Bredgar and Wormshill Railway in Kent.

Volunteer appeal for BeerFest 9-10/6/23

The famed Cwrw ar y Cledrau / Railale festival returns on Friday 9/6/23 and Saturday 10/6/23. The festival is the most financially successful on the whole Ff&WHR, and all the money raised helps keep the dream alive. However the event is dependent on volunteers to make it a success, so why not come along, get involved and support your railway! All help is welcome, from helping set up before and clear away after, to selling tickets, stewarding and serving at the bar - every little helps!

In addition to the dates of the festival itself, help is gratefully received during the all-important setting up and clearing away (when volunteers may revive the lunchtime barbeque!). The dates for these at Dinas are:

• Saturday 27/5/23 – clear Goods Shed and set up bar stillage.

• Sunday 28/5/23 – site clearance and other jobs at Dinas.

• Saturday 3/6/23 – set up booking office marquee.

• Wednesday 7/6/23 & Thursday 8/6/23 – set up security marquee, fencing, toilets, signage, lighting, and CCTV.

• Monday 12/6/23 & Tuesday 13/6/23 – clear up.

If you can help, if only for one day, it will make a difference. Please email Graham Hoyland

Baldwin No.590 launch details on 27/5/23

The former WWI Baldwin No.794 Tiger imported by the IWM from second use on Indian sugar plantation was recently gifted to the WHHR. It has been under repair over several years at the WHHR and VoR. The loco will be launched at the WHHR as No.590 at 11am on Saturday 27/5/23. Donors and guests will be taken by Russell to Gelert's Farm for the launch. At 11:55 speeches in the museum will see the loco unveiled before a special train to Pen-y-Mount. From 2pm the loco will be available to haul public trains from the Tremadog Road terminus to Pen-y-Mount. It is hoped the loco will be available for the WHR100 event but it will be need to be tested on the route and across Britannia Bridge first. No details have emerged about steamings or test running on the VoR. The status and involvement of the similar Baldwin stored at Boston Lodge is currently unknown.

For full details of the WHHR's involvement in the WHR100 event see WHHR100 though this plan precedes any involvement by No.590.

Still in hospital 18/4/23

Your webmaster is still in hospital but may be released home in a few weeks after some rehabilitation physiotherapy. In the meantime it is possible to make some updates from the bedside when a compatibility issue between an old SIM and a new laptop is fixed. It seems impossible to get around the hospital's free NHS WiFi which blocks FTP applications so my 4G iPhone hotspot must be used to update.

Garratt workings from 15/4/23

No.87 is working out of Dinas and No.143 is working out of Boston Lodge. No.130 may soon be reassembled and share duties.

Good news and bad for L&BR

While planning permission recently lapsed on the Killington Lane-Blackmoor Extension on 7/3/23 with the railway failing to raise sufficient funds to purchase the missing sections of trackbed or engage contractors they have managed to purchase the pub restaurant at the former Blackmoor Station site. Purchase was completed on 17/4/23. The railway hopes to reopen the location as a viable business incorporating a station, albeit on a different environment. Planning Permission for the section from Blackmoor Gate to Wistlandpound Reservoir is with a different local authority as this section will have permission for several more months and work is continuing on this isolated section. The F&WHR's Lyd may visit the line for a Gala in the near future. For full details of the planning concerns see L&B Railway Planning report.

Coaches to carry train names

A set of train name boards have been made to slot into a holder on the side of modern F&WHR coaches. These help identify for passengers which train it is as up to three trains may be at Porthmadog at the same time. While locos carry a train name, this is not obvious to anyone walking down the platform when the loco is at the head of the train. Heritage coaches do not have brackets fitted so maybe paper labels will be used inside windows. Altogether there are 7 different named trains and they are named bilingually.

This view (15/4/23) shows an example of a coach nameboard for The Woodland Wanderer which should reduce passenger confusion when three trains are in Porthmadog station. Most of this train will not however carry such labels. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to enlarge to full size where available. Death of Y Cerdyn July 2023

The ‘local discount’ Y Cerdyn cards that are due to expire in July are no longer valid or available to purchase. The Y Cerdyn scheme came to an end in 2019, when new legislation was brought in that made the scheme unviable for the F&WHR to continue. The railway has been honouring all cards in circulation up until the end of last season, but are no longer offering the discount. If your card is still valid, the railway can refund the £15 purchase price for the card. If owners would like to receive this refund, please email the F&WHR with a photograph of your Cerdyn and your bank details.

The F&WHR will be introducing a new scheme for discounts for local residents later this season. It will not be a physical card that can be purchased. Rather, the railway will offer discounts to local residents on specific dates and specific trains. Details of these discounted services will be communicated by the email newsletter and social media pages. If owners would like to subscribe to the newsletter, please go to the website (www.festrail.co.uk) and scroll to the bottom of the homepage. There is a black box there where you can input your name and email address.

Some existing owners of the card do not consider the new offer as flexible as being able to take a trip on the railway at a date and time of their choosing.

On Tuesday, 25/4/23, the Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project team will be hosting a ‘Behind the Scenes’ workshop at Boston Lodge, details of which are available below:

12:50 - Meet at Boston Lodge Halt. This workshop will take place between 13:00 – 14:00

This tour is for staff and volunteers and an opportunity to find out more about the works being done at Boston Lodge and see progress to date. Please note, there will be a maximum of 12 adults on each workshop. To register your interest in these workshops, please email James Kindberg on jkindberg@ffwhr.com

Boston Lodge is a working engineering site with rails and uneven surfaces throughout, often muddy in places and this is combined with frequent vehicle and train movements. For safety reasons it is therefore only suitable for people who are fully mobile without assistance and whose sight is sufficient for them to see dangers themselves. Please wear warm clothes and bring a waterproof, the weather can be unpredictable. Please wear stout, preferably leather, walking boots. Absolutely no sandals or trainers.

Traffic report 13/4/23

The Harbourmaster ran well loaded on Thursday 13/4/23 during the school Easter Holidays. It also picked up at three intermediate stations including Nantmor and Meillionen.

Harlech Castle was present at Dduallt with a short freight train on 13/4/23. The train was disposing of cuttings the lineside clearance team had produced and consisted of one B wagon and the brake van. There has been a concerted campaign on the F&WHR to reduce lineside branches and briars over winter which have in the past scratched the sides of rolling stock and reduced views from the train.

A short personal message 10/4/23

Apologies for the 4 week gap in service. Your webmaster fell ill on 11/3/23 and was taken to hospital but is now on the mend. I will have to stay for a few more weeks in rehab to regain mobility with the help of the physiotherapists. Hopefully, now a new laptop has been purchased and the necessary software installed, it will be possible to do regular updates from my hospital bed:-)

F&WHR 8/4/23

It seems No.143 had a problem returning to Beddgelert on Saturday 8/4/23 with lineside fires. With No.130 at Dinas taking too long to steam for a substitution it was left to the two Funkeys to power the return to Caernarfon. This is believed to be the first time they have been paired since Caernarfon Castle was out-shopped in green last year.

This easterly view (8/4/23) shows Vale of Ffestiniog and Caernarfon Castle coupling up to the return working of The Snowdonia Star at Beddgelert as No.143 might have had an ash pan problem and could have caused fires in the Beddgelert Forest. In fact No.130 is being reassembled after the repainted boiler cladding was returned from Boston Lodge recently and being readied for reintroduction before planned use on The Snowdonian special train.

WHR100 Event bookable 5/4/23

Click on the image to see this archive view of the Baldwin No.590 departing Porthmadog Harbour with a train for Dinas. This image is copyright F&WHR. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Tickets can now be booked for the WHR100 Event at £75 for a Day Rover and £150 for a 2/3 Day Rover. Children are £10/£20 respectively and there are WHRS/FRS discounts too (£60/£120). See WHR booking website. Full timetables are not yet available however outlines of planned events have been revealed.

Friday 23/6/23 focusses on the preparations for the 1923 Opening Day with an Inspection Train to Pont Croesor and slates to Hafod-y-llyn reflecting Croesor Branch slate freight. In the afternoon Russell will haul a vintage train to Beddgelert and two Fairlies will recreate a test train to Rhyd Ddu using Merddin Emrys which reprises its 1923 duty! Welsh Pony and Russell will offer a series of trains into the evening to Pont Croesor/Beddgelert reprising their roles on the WHR. No.590 will be running on the WHHR railway on Friday.

Saturday 24/6/23 sees an attempt to recreate many historical tableaux including No.590. Both Russell and Welsh Pony will run to Beddgelert/Rhyd Ddu, while No.590 will run to Beddgelert to pose by the heritage water tower. Even the Demolition Train will be recreated with the Simplex. Welsh Pony and No.590 will top and tail on Porthmadog-Minffordd shuttles including a non stop run through Porthmadog. WHR supporters were hoping No.590 might have made it to Dinas after last year's disappointment but there is no mention of this.

Sunday 25/6/23 sees the modern WHR featured and WHR supporters wonder why as these services are photographable every day! The day sees some double headed Garratts and mixed trains that used to feature in SuperPower Galas before COVID. There are a few vintage trains to Beddgelert sprinkled in the mix with No.590 and some Fairlie hauled shuttles to Minffordd.

It is notable that there does not seem to be any through running of Russell or No.590 to Dinas and No.590 will not even travel beyond Beddgelert (the FR's Baldwin failed on the 1 in 40 near Hafod Ruffydd during tests in recent years). This will cause considerable disappointment to WHRS members. The WHHR might extend their short platform at Pen-y-Mount to the south as far as the footpath crossing to allow more than one coach to call there but it is currently unclear what transfer traffic there might be though most event passenger trains will stop at Pen-y-Mount.

As the WHHR is offering its stock and locos over the 3 days of the Gala, the F&WHR will be offering a different loco and stock on the WHHR's internal services in return. On Friday a construction train will operate on the WHHR to reprise the type used to complete the WHR in 1923. Small diesel Motorail 2197 was one of the locomotives used on the original construction contract for the WHR. It is fortunate that this locomotive still survives and it will be paired with a suitable rake of tipper wagons from the F&WHR to recreate authentic construction trains of 1923.
