F&WHR 31/7/23

The weather forecast for Porthmadog on Monday 31/7/23 was for a rainy afternoon with temperatures of 14-17C. Monday's service pattern was five FR trains, including the additional 12:05 Woodland Wanderer and three on the WHR, with two Aberglaslyn trains and a Gelert Explorer.

No.143 was in the WHR platform before 10:00 ready for the 10:15 The Aberglaslyn.  A large school party joined the 10:45 Mountain Spirit which arrived in the FR platform at 10:07 behind David Lloyd George. The loco ran round at 10:18. Merddin Emrys arrived about 10:30 into the WHR platform for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. At 11:47 Harlech Castle hauled Hugh Napier out of Minffordd yard and at 11:50 hauled it towards Boston Lodge.

Welsh Pony hauled the second Woodland Wanderer, the new 12:05 service that started today. At 12:38 Harlech Castle was shunting a coach into the seawall siding, possibly reforming a rake. the loco arrived light end at Minffordd at 12:51 and ran into the loop wrong line before running into the yard at 12:54.

With The Aberglaslyn arriving back at about 13:00 No.143 ran to water in the yard and was running round its train at 13:15. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 13:21. With The Aberglaslyn departing at 13:40, the Mountain Spirit rolled into the WHR platform while Merddin Emrys waited by the signalbox to swop duties. The 14:10 Mountain Spirit crossed with Welsh Pony at Minffordd with the returning 12:05 Woodland Wanderer. The latter arrived at Porthmadog just before the 14:35 departed at 14:37 showing the new timetable with additional Woodland Wanderer trains is working well.

This easterly view (31/7/23) shows Welsh Pony running round the returned 12:05 additional Woodland Wanderer with the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer disappearing in the distance. Welsh Pony took the rake ECS back to the depot but on Wednesday there will be a 15:30 additional Woodland Wanderer using the same set. Click on the image to enlarge. Welsh Pony emerged from Boston Lodge light engine at 15:50 and reversed at Pen Cob Junction to work to Minffordd, arriving there wrong line at 16:00. At 16:04 it reversed into the yard. The Aberglaslyn was back by 16:30 and waited for David Lloyd George to pull in to the FR platform at 16:42 before departing with the ECS. The Fairlie ran round at 16:50 and shunted the ECS into the WHR platform in an unusual move at 16:58 whilst awaiting the arrival of the Mountain Spirit which was in section arriving at 17:12. David Lloyd George left at 17:13 with its ECS. Merddin Emrys ran round at 17:30 and shunted the front two coaches to the seawall siding at 17:33. 17:33. The train collected an additional coach and then shunted back to the ECS in the platform before departing with the ECS at 17:51.

At 17:06 Welsh Pony emerged from Minffordd Yard with departmental coach No.111, wagon DZ1424 full of young volunteers, B wagon No.1680 with PW materials and the FR Mess coach No.1111. This train was probably a special 'treat' for the volunteers with a snack and was noted at Tan-y-bwlch at 17:52. The train shunted up the platform at 18:16 towards the east and the young volunteers returned from the cafe at 18:25.

Jacobite suspended for H&SAW breaches

There may be a lesson for the F&WHR and other heritage railways in the suspension of WCR's Jacobite services between Fort William and Mallaig from 15/7/23 over concerns found by a spot inspection about door locks and passengers leaning out of trains from vestibule droplights. In the past the Office of Rail and Road has ruled that the lower speeds on Heritage Lines do not present as much risk to passengers in this regard. However, they have offered advice about narrow formations with close cuttings such as on the FR and close undergrowth, which was becoming a problem on the WHR until the recent lineside clearance programme took effect. See WCR announcement for more details.

F&WHR 30/7/23

The weather forecast for Porthmadog on Sunday 30/7/23 was for a rainy afternoon with temperatures of 16-17C. Sunday's service pattern was four FR trains and three on the WHR, with two Aberglaslyn trains and a Gelert Explorer. The first movement was Hugh Napier at 09:35 which propelled departmental coach No.111 from Boston Lodge wrong line into the loop before hauling it into Minffordd Yard at 09:28.

No 87 was the first off on the Aberglaslyn. Merddin Emrys was on the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. Although David Lloyd George arrived with the Woodland Wanderer at about 10:35. The loco uncoupled and moved towards Britannia Bridge but then returned to the rear of the train at 10:45. The loco finally ran round at 10:55 before departing a couple of minutes late waiting for late passengers.

At 13:30 No.87 was back in the WHR platform ready for the 13:40 The Aberglaslyn as the rain started. David Lloyd George shunted to the yard headshunt at 13:45 as Merddin Emrys approached across The Cob and was held at station limits while the Garratt departed several minutes late. The Fairlie then followed the Garratt into the WHR platform at 13:49. The Fairlies swopped duties at 13:52 with Merddin Emrys detaching and running to the yard to refuel and water while David Lloyd George attached to the front ready for the 14:10 Mountain Spirit. Although David Lloyd George was signalled to leave on time at 14:35, it did not leave until 15:12 (over 35 minutes late) to complete the lunchtime departures. This may have been because the Mountain Spirit which suffered delay, arriving at Minffordd at 14:25 but not departing at 14:55, 30 minutes down, for no obvious reason as no train came the other way. It departed Tan-y-bwlch at 15:25, due 14:45, so had accumulated another 10 minutes delay, possibly with a wet rail in the woods. At 15:56 Vale of Ffestiniog passed through Minffordd with one coach heading towards Boston Lodge presumably from Glan-y-pwll depot.

No.87 was the first of the returning trains arriving back at 16:23 and the ECS departed promptly just 6 minutes later. The Woodland Wandered arrived back into the FR platform at 17:09, still about 25 minutes down. Merddin Emrys ran round 9 minutes later and at 17:27 the ECS pulled up to the starter here the train waited for the Mountain Spirit to arrive, which was still in section. David Lloyd George arrived back at 17:37 and this allowed Merddin Emrys to depart a few seconds later. The loco ran to the fuelling point at 17:40 and was back at 15 mins later. The ECS departed at 17:59 to close the day's activities.

WalesRail 'shafted' over HS2 funding

The Government have allocated £5 billion of funding for Welsh Railways to HS2 and a further £1 billion to Northern Powerhouse on the basis they are classified as England & Wales projects despite neither of them having any planned infrastructure improvement in North Wales. The Tories justification for this seems to be that services from those areas have connections for North Wales. Scotland on the other hand is receiving a cash grant despite the fact that many HS2 services will continue to Scotland. See Wales Online story.

F&WHR 28/7/23

The weather forecast for Friday 28/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 15-18C. Friday's service pattern was four FR trains and three trains on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer. This is the last day of the low season service and next week the number of trains increases with the addition of the extra Woodland Wanderer rake from Porthmadog and The Cwellyn from Caernarfon.

At 10:08, David Lloyd George arrived in the FR platform with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit while No.143 awaited departure in the WHR platform with the 10:15 The Aberglaslyn. The Fairlie ran round at 10:20 in preparation for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. Merddin Emrys arrived with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer at 10:34 into the WHR platform and promptly ran round.

At 12:38 Hugh Napier propelled two B wagons partly filled with coal to Minffordd from Porthmadog then hauled the wagons into the yard at 12:42 to be refilled. Coal movements are likely to become more frequent with the more intensive peak service starting next week. The train emerged from the yard with fully loaded wagons at 13:46 and set off for the Porthmadog refuelling point at 13:56.

No.143 was back by 13:10 and the loco had detached and gone to water. The loco had coupled up and was ready to depart with the afternoon working by 13:25. This left at 13:44 as the Mountain Spirit approached across The Cob into the WHR platform at 13:50. Merddin Emrys immediately detached as the Fairlies swopped duties with David Lloyd George emerging from the yard and coupling to the rake ready for the 14:10 departure. F&WHR 27/7/23

The weather forecast for Thursday 27/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 16-19C. Thursday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the two through trains on the WHR. The first train today was Harlech Castle with the Works Train departing Minffordd at 06:58 with PW containers and the FR's Mess coach, which headed towards a damp Tan-y-bwlch.

The Harbourmaster was first up and arrived ECS into the WHR platform by 09:45 behind No.130 in plenty of time for the 10:05 departure. David Lloyd George arrived with the 10:45 Mountain Spirit as the Garratt departed. The loco ran round by 10:25 with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer departed Boston Lodge. Arrival in the WHR platform was at about 10:30 and Merddin Emrys ran round at 10:33 in plenty of time for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer.

The Fairlies swopped duties so David Lloyd George brought the afternoon Woodland Wanderer back through Minffordd at 16:34. The final train of the day was the Mountain Spirit which passed through Minffordd several minutes late hauled by Merddin Emrys at 17:02 to complete the day's activities.

Passenger perspective 25-27/7/23

A passenger has sent the following comments about the F&WHR from their experience of the F&WHR 25-27/7/23:

On Tuesday 25/7/23 we had pre-booked on-line for a return trip on the Mountain Spirit on the FfR. The train left Porthmadog on time with David Lloyd George. The train made request stops at Penrhyn, Plas Halt, Coed-y-Bleiddiau and Dduallt, resulting in a 10 minute late arrival at Tan-y-Grisiau where the down The Quarryman was delayed awaiting our arrival. At Blaenau Ffestiniog, everyone wanted refreshments due to none being available on the train any more, and the small portacabin soon became overwhelmed with people as a result. Some people had expected refreshments to be available on the train, as stated in the guidebook on sale on the train. With only one request stop at Dduallt, the return trip ran to time.

On Thursday 27/7/23 we had planned to travel on The Harbourmaster as far as Beddgelert. There was no on-line facility to book this journey in advance, so we asked at the booking office to do this. We were initially told there was no train to Beddgelert on that day, and I had to explain again that we hoped to travel on The Harbourmaster for part of the journey only. We were then told this was not possible as the train was fully booked. So instead, we went by bus which was already running the Summer holiday service of a bus every hour, and for just £3.90 return. While waiting to photograph the Snowdonia Star at Bryn-y-Felin, we heard other people saying they too had been unable to book to travel on the train. The train was 20 minutes late on this occasion.

We felt that the booking arrangements this year were too restrictive and people were being turned away, with potential passengers being lost. We hope things will be better next year.

Wednesday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and three trains on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer. The first train today was Harlech Castle with the Works Train departing Minffordd at 06:46 with PW containers and the FR's Mess coach which headed towards Tan-y-bwlch.

No.130 was the first passenger working and was in the WHR platform by 10:00 ready to haul the 10:15 working of The Aberglaslyn. Merddin Emrys had run round its Mountain Spirit rake ready for the 10:45 departure from the FR platform. David Lloyd George followed on the Woodland Wanderer which also departed on time.

Blanche passed Minffordd on The Quarryman at 12:45. At 13:02 Moelwyn emerged light engine from Minffordd Yard and headed towards Boston Lodge. At 13:15 David Lloyd Gorge passed Minffordd on the returning Woodland Wanderer. No.130 was back in the WHR platform at Porthmadog at 13:30 ready to depart on The Aberglaslyn, due off at 13:40. The Fairlies swopped duties as normal and David Lloyd George departed Minffordd at 14:29, almost 10 minutes late, on the Mountain Spirit in rather wet conditions. This was followed by Merddin Emrys on the afternoon Woodland Wanderer passing Minffordd at 14.46. The last of the afternoon departures was Blanche with the returning The Quarryman several minutes late at 15:12.

At the end of the afternoon No.130 was the first back at about 16:25 before departing with the ECS shortly after the Woodland Wanderer returned at 16:45. The Fairlie ran round at 16:55 and left with the ECS four minutes later. David Lloyd George was the last to return, pulling in to the FR platform at 17:27, over quarter of an hour late. The loco coaled and watered before running round and coupling up at 17:45. The ECS left at 17:53 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 25/7/23

The weather forecast for Tuesday 25/7/23 was for a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 13-17C. Tuesday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the two through trains on the WHR. The first train today was Harlech Castle with the Works Train departing Minffordd at 06:50 with PW containers and the FR's Mess coach which headed towards Tan-y-bwlch.

No.130 departed with The Harbourmaster on time at 10:05. David Lloyd George hauled the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform at 10:15 and ran round at 10:30 ready for the 10:45 departure. Merddin Emrys arrived at about 10:30 with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer and was early enough for the loco to run to the refuelling point before the 10:45 left on time. The loco returned and coupled up at 11:00 and the train left on time.

The Snowdonia Star was the first of the lunchtime arrivals, pulling into the WHR platform behind No.143 around 12:30. The loco promptly ran to the yard to water and returned to the rake at 12:45 ready for the 14:05 return working. Blanche pulled into the FR platform at 12:53 with The Quarryman. At 13:00 Blanche shunted the rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for later arrivals. The loco then shunted to the refuelling and watering point. Merddin Emrys was next with the returning Woodland Wanderer which pulled into the FR platform at 13:20. Nine minutes later the rake was propelled out of the platform and hauled back into the yard to make space for the returning Mountain Spirit, which arrived on time at 13:45 behind David Lloyd George. The Fairlies swopped duties and Merddin Emrys coupled up ready for the 14:10 Mountain Spirit. David Lloyd George then departed on the Mountain Spirit at 14:30 and at 14:50 Blanche extracted The Quarryman rake from the yard and propelled it back into the FR platform for the 15:05 return service, which left on time, completing the midday departures.

At the end of the afternoon the Woodland Wanderer passed Minffordd at 16:34 on time. The final working was the Mountain Spirit which passed Minffordd about 5 minutes late at 17:06. The ECS probably departed Porthmadog at about 17:40 to close the day's activities.

Woodland Wanderer service to be doubled in August?

It appears the second rake for the Woodland Wanderer will be in service throughout August, at least on Wednesdays. This train departs at 12:05 and arrives back at 14:30 before departing again at 15:30 then arriving back at 17:40. The last train of the day always tends to be lightly loaded and so the Wednesday working has been made available for the Locals Discount of 50% off fares throughout August (see below). Last year up to 3 rakes were used in the peak with six possible Woodland Wanderer trains.

Locals' Discount extended to the whole of August

The F&WHR is looking forward to a busy Summer and want their neighbours to be part of it as well. So the LOCALS’ DISCOUNT will now be available on four train services every week throughout August. These are probably anticipated to be lightly used trains.
The F&WHR is offering a 50% discount (for the whole family) to local residents with their primary address in postcode areas LL22 - LL78 inclusive (Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy).
This discount will be available on the following four trains:
TUESDAY: The Cwellyn 15:15 from Caernarfon
WEDNESDAY: Woodland Wanderer 15:30 from Porthmadog
THURSDAY: The Cwellyn 15:15 from Caernarfon
SATURDAY: The Quarryman 11:40 from Blaenau Ffestiniog
Use voucher code AUG50 to receive the discount when buying tickets online, by phone, at one of the Booking Offices or from the Guard on a train.
Customers must bring proof of residency (e.g. Driver’s Licence) on the day of travel to show at the check-in desk.
ℹ PLEASE NOTE: the Discount offer is for tickets only and does not include Guidebooks or Food & Drink. The code will not work on train services running before or after August 2023, or on trains other than those listed above.
The F&WHR hopes to hold further Locals’ Discount Offers later in the season, which extends to the end of October.

F&WHR 24/7/23

The weather forecast for Monday 24/7/23 was for a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 11-18C. There was a weather warning for heavy rain and flooding in the Glaslyn and Dwyryd valleys. Monday's service pattern was four FR trains but only one WHR train, the Gelert Explorer.

Merddin Emrys hauled the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Prince into the FR platform at about 10:15 and had run round shortly afterwards. David Lloyd George hauled the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform at about 10:42 but the run round had to await the departed of the Mountain Spirit.

The Woodland Wanderer returned on time at 13:21 and the loco immediately detached and ran to the yard to refuel and water. This was followed by the Mountain Spirit on time at 13:44. Five minutes later David Lloyd George swopped duties and coupled up ready for the 14:10 departure. When the shunt limit was clear Merddin Emrys completed its run round and coupled up at 14:20 ready for the 14:35 departure. the Porthmadog was offline after the two trains departed from 14:28.

Trains returned in the late afternoon with the Woodland Wanderer passing Minffordd 5 minutes late at 16:35 followed by The Mountain Spirit 15minutes late at 17:11 to close the day's activities.

Lilla and bug boxes moved to National Eisteddfod 24/7/23

PW diesel No.9 shunted Lilla and two bug boxes, Observation Cars Nos.1/12, to the North Yard on 24/7/23. They were then shunted onto a lorry to transport to Boduan, near Pwllheli where the train was to be on display at the National Eisteddfod. The North Wales Track Gang helped lay a short length of track and unload the train by gravity off the transporter in the field next to the main pavilion. See below for video of the story.

Summer holidays are here and the F&WHR hope many visitors will be arriving in the area for a relaxing holiday in beautiful North Wales. During visitors time here they may well come across a railway level crossing (or two) - whether they are on a road or on a footpath.
Level crossings should always be treated with respect and attention paid to lights and signs.

Network Rail have just sent their new video, which gives some helpful advice on how to ensure safety and those of others.

https://bit.ly/NR-LC-SAFETY

IMPORTANT - Remember that it is not always obvious that a train is approaching, especially in the hills or woods through which F&WHR trains run. Check carefully before crossing the line - and do not try to 'beat the train' at open crossings!

F&WHR 23/7/23

The weather forecast for Sunday 23/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 13-17C. There is a weather warning for heavy rain and disruption in the late afternoon/evening Sunday. Sunday's service pattern was four FR trains and three WHR trains, with two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer. However, this seemed to be uncorrected misinformation on the F&WHR website which might have misled intending passengers, especially those waiting at intermediate stations!

David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform at 10:20. This was closely followed by Merddin Emrys with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer arriving at 10:30 into the WHR platform.

The awaited return of The Aberglaslyn did not happen at 13:00 and the Woodland Wanderer ran into the WHR platform instead, some 10 minutes late at 13:30. There were no crowds on the platform waiting for the 13:40 The Aberglaslyn so it appeared that both trains had been cancelled but no notice was given on F&WHR websites. Merddin Emrys went to refuel and water immediately. David Lloyd George also arrived back at 13:55 into the FR platform some 10 minutes late. Merddin Emrys swopped duties and left with the 14:10 Mountain Spirit.

David Lloyd George was back at 16:45 with the returning Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform. Run round came quickly but the train was held awaiting the Mountain Spirit which arrived at 17:10. The ECS left two minutes later. Merddin Emrys ran to the refuelling point as soon as the train had cleared shunt limits. The loco returned to its train at 17:32 and departed with the ECS at 17:36 to close the day's activities. The signalbox was closed at 17:42.

Recent problems with the webpage have been caused by the size of the webpage with many photos from WHR100 busting the internal limits of FrontPage, the webpage authoring programme. To fix the problem the webpage will now be archived monthly towards the end of each month but all material will still be available in the archive. The first monthly page has been archived today. The changes mean that material from the previous month will only be available on the main webpage for about 3 weeks.

Open Access on North Wales coast?

With an Open Access operator soon to introduce Carmarthen to Paddington services in South Wales, the question must be asked whether such an operator could run trains from Holyhead to Manchester Airport/Birmingham International/London restoring the direct loco hauled services of previous years that TfW are refusing to restore. An Open Access operator might even be welcome on the Holyhead-Cardiff route where TfW is sometimes providing a derisory service with Class 150 DMUs totally unsuited to such long distance journeys!

Aberystwyth logs 21/7/23

The FO Aberystwyth Kronospan log train seems to be becoming quite regular with its Class 97/3 haulage (Class 37). It ran again on 21/7/23 as 6C55, the 15:50 Aberystwyth-Chirk Kronspan (reversing at Chester) departing 12 minutes early this week. The sole NR feature of Aberystwyth Yard that remains, the run round loop, is used to load the trains and is now officially designated as Aberystwyth Krono Colas. The outbound empty wagons ran as the FO 6C54, the 0201 Chirk Kronospan-Aberystwyth run round loop, arriving at 0504 and allowing several hours to load the logs from the stockpile that are brought into the former Goods Yard from surrounding forests by lorry.

In other mainline news the failed 67 that has spend over 2 months in Bangor Bay, chocolate liveried No.67022, left on the evening of 11/7/23. The loco took an hour to reach Llandudno Junction, just 15 miles away, so possibly has a low power defect!

F&WHR 22/7/23

The weather forecast for Saturday 22/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 15-17C and heavy rain all day. There is a weather warning for heavy rain and disruption all day Sunday. Saturday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, but just the two through WHR trains. As the school holidays have now started it is maybe surprising that neither the second Woodland Wanderer rake has started running on the FR, nor The Cwellyn on the WHR. Is one train a day from Caernarfon really meeting the demand from the north end of the line when several years ago there were many more daily services?

It seemed a strange start to the day when there was no train in the platform for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster. No.130 eventually pulled in wit the ECS at 10:14 with many passengers standing on the platform waiting with umbrellas. When there have been problems raising steam in the past, the Funkey has brought the rake over and the steam engine has followed when ready. The train left at 10:20, some 15 minutes late, in atrocious weather.

Merddin Emrys arrived with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit at 10:29 into the FR platform. The loco ran round while David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform at 10:42. The Mountain Spirit departed roughly on time and after The Cob section was clear, David Lloyd George ran for a quick top up at the refuelling/watering point. There have been cases of locos running our of fuel on the Blaenau run with the poor coal received recently which is why this Fairlie has enhanced greedy boards on its coal bunkers. The Woodland Wanderer also left on time.

The Snowdonia Star arrived in very wet conditions at 12:45 behind No.143 which detached and ran to water. The train was 20 minutes late waiting at Rhyd Ddu for the late running Harbourmaster. Blanche arrived at 13:00 with The Quarryman into the FR platform only 10 minutes late. Blanche ran round and shunted the rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for later arrivals. No.143 ran round at 13:35 ready for the 14:05 return working. David Lloyd George arrived at 13:30 with the returning Woodland Wanderer and 5 minutes later propelled the rake out and led it back into the sidings to clear the FR platform for later movements. Merddin Emrys arrived at 13:58 with the returning Mountain Spirit into the FR platform, the last of the lunchtime arrivals and just over 10 minutes late. David Lloyd George shunted onto the front, exchanging duties, ready for the 14:10 departure.

Trains returned in the late afternoon. The last movement was Blanche with the ECS from The Quarryman returning to Boston Lodge for its maintenance. This passed Minffordd at 18:07 but exchanged locos with Lyd at Pen Cob, arriving at Porthmadog at 18:25. Lyd ran round at 18:41 after presumably fuelling and watering. At 18:02 the train departed for the depot to close the day's activities.

Caernarfon gains new attraction

Caernarfon has gained another attraction for the school holidays with the erection of a 35m Ferris wheel next to the castle and close to the harbour swing bridge. If Caernarfon brings more visitors to this £6 tourist attraction lets hope the WHR benefits from the extra holidaymakers in the area. See Daily Post story.

F&WHR 21/7/23

The weather forecast for Friday 21/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 14-17C. Friday's service pattern was four FR trains but just one WHR train, the Gelert Explorer. Upnor Castle dragged the three B wagons with loco ash at 11:10 wrong line into Minffordd from the west before reversing into the yard 2 minutes later.

David Lloyd George was on the first train out of Porthmadog, the Mountain Spirit, followed by Merddin Emrys on the Woodland Wanderer. Upnor Castle reappeared from Minffordd Yard at 11:55 propelling the 3 B wagons now full of coal. Two minutes later it hauled the wagons towards Porthmadog.

Merddin Emrys was back at 13:35 into the WHR platform with the Woodland Wanderer and the loco ran to the yard to refuel and water. David Lloyd George swopped duties and was on the afternoon Woodland Wanderer.

Trains returned in the late afternoon with David Lloyd George arriving back about 16:55 and Merddin Emrys about 17:20. The final ECS left about 20 minutes later to close the day's activities.

Russell to visit L&BR September Gala

The WHHR's Russell is off to visit the L&BR for their September Gala 23-24/9/23. This makes a change from the F&WHR sending Lyd. See Rail Advent story.

F&WHR 19/7/23

The weather forecast for Thursday 20/7/23 was for a day of sunny periods and temperatures of 11-18C. Thursday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and the two through WHR trains. The F&WHR webcams were not operating when checked at 08:50 and continued to be office for some hours until 11:18.

David Lloyd George was on the Woodland Wanderer passing Minffordd on time at 11:20. Blanche arrived light engine at 12:27 and pulled into Porthmadog Yard. At 12:38 No.87 arrived from Caernarfon on the Snowdonia Star over 10 minutes late and the loco ran to the watering point immediately. Lyd arrived at about 12:50 on The Quarryman into the FR platform. The Garratt ran round its rake at 12:55 ready for the 14:05 return service. Meanwhile Blanche dragged The Quarryman out of the FR platform at 12:55 and shunted the rake to the yard while Lyd was presumably coaling and watering. David Lloyd George arrived around 13:20 with the Woodland Wanderer and Lyd departed light engine for the depot. The Fairlie unusually propelled the rake out of the platform to make space for the following train before hauling it back into the yard.

The final arrival of the midday period was Merddin Emrys which pulled into the FR platform at about 13:50. At 140:00 David Lloyd George swopped duties and went on the front of the Mountain Spirit to depart at 14:05. The two trains left on time.

At the end of the afternoon No.130 pulled in at 16:42 on The Harbourmaster over 15 minutes late while Merddin Emrys arrived at 16:46 in the FR platform with the returning Woodland Wanderer. The Garratt departed with the ECS at 16:50. The Fairlie ran round at 16:56 and departed with the ECS just after David Lloyd George rolled in with the returning Mountain Spirit at 17:18. The loco ran to coal and water after the Woodland Wanderer ECS had departed. The final departure was David Lloyd George at 17:48 with the ECS Mountain Spirit. However the final departure was Vale of Ffestiniog with three B wagons of loco ash at 18:00 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 19/7/23

The weather forecast for Wednesday 19/7/23 was for an improving day with sunshine later and temperatures of 11-19C. Wednesday's service pattern was five FR trains, including The Quarryman, and three trains on the WHR, two The Aberglaslyn trains and one Gelert Explorer. The early PW train ran again with Harlech Castle, a PW wagon and the FR Mess coach exiting Minffordd Yard at 06:50 towards Tan-y-bwlch.

No.87 was on the 10:15 Aberglaslyn working, arriving before 10:00 with the ECS. This was followed by David Lloyd George into the FR platform at 10:10 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit and Merddin Emrys on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer, all of which left on time.

At 12:30 Upnor Castle propelled a B wagon with coal into Porthmadog Yard for the refuelling point. The loco waited from 12:40 light engine for Lyd to appear on The Quarryman before returning to the depot light engine. The Garratt returning with The Aberglaslyn at 13:00. The Minffordd webcam was offline from 12:28.

At the end of the day The Aberglaslyn due back at 16:30 must have been late as it was still in the WHR platform at 17:30 awaiting its engine back from watering. The ECS train left at 17:42 to close the day's activities.

Race the train 19/7/23

No. 87 was used to haul the Dinas-Caernarfon evening special for the annual 'Race the train'.

Coal issues

Some of the problems with Fairlies recently may have been due to poor coal as Welsh steam coal is no longer available. The Fairlies may have been running out of coal on the long Mountain Spirit workings requiring the mid duty substitutions that have been noted. The locos then return late light engine after a coal top up possibly delivered by a road vehicle.

F&WHR 18/7/23

Merddin Emrys was running round at 10:15 in the FR platform with the Mountain Spirit and David Lloyd George was approaching across The Cob with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform. No.143 arrived with the Snowdonia Star at 12:25 and the loco went to water shortly afterwards. Blanche arrived with The Quarryman at about 12:50 and the loco shunted the rake to the yard shortly afterwards to allow for later arrivals. the two Fairlies exchanged duties as normal.

No.87 turned up at 16:52 with the returning Harbourmaster, over 25 minutes late into the WHR platform in poor weather. The poor weather seemed to affect all services as the Woodland Wanderer arrived back at 17:14, about 30 minutes late and the Mountain Spirit at 17:45, some 35 minutes late. After the Woodland Wanderer arrived No.87 departed with its ECS once The Cob section was clear. After David Lloyd George arrived Merddin Emrys headed off with its ECS. Finally, David Lloyd George refuelled and watered before hauling its ECS across the Cob at 18:24 to close a long rather dismal day.

F&WHR 17/7/23

The weather forecast for Monday 17/7/23 was for an overcast day with sunny periods later and temperatures of 14-17C. Monday's service pattern was a repeat of Sunday's with four FR trains but just one on the WHR, the Gelert Explorer. All the webcams were offline at 10:00 due to some internet problem at Harbour Station but came back on at 10:30.

David Lloyd George passed Minffordd at 10:57 on the Mountain Spirit followed by Merddin Emrys with the Woodland Wanderer at 11:20, both on time.

Merddin Emrys was back at 13:20 into the WHR platform and went to refuel. David Lloyd George returned at 13:50 into the FR platform and Merddin Emrys coupled up to the front 8 minutes later, exchanging duties, for the1410 Mountain Spirit, which left on time.

David Lloyd George passed Minffordd at 16:37 with the returning Woodland Wanderer and Merddin Emrys followed at 17:04 with the Mountain Spirit. Porthmadog station was quiet by 17:45 with all the trains 'put to bed' to finish the day's activities.

F&WHR 16/7/23

The weather forecast for Sunday 16/7/23 was for an overcast day of showers with temperatures of 13-17C. Sunday's service pattern was for four FR trains but just one on the WHR, the Gelert Explorer. First up was Upnor Castle which arrived at Minffordd with two B wagons full of loco ash and a brakevan at 09:45 from the west. At 10:10 the loco ran round and at 10:14 hauled the train towards Boston Lodge. Normally these trains go to Dduallt.

At 10:08 Merddin Emrys brought the ECS for the Mountain Prince into the FR platform at Porthmadog. the train left on time at 10:45 after David Lloyd George arrived in the WHR with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. Run round came at 10:55 and the train departed on time at 11:10. The train returned at 13:36 into the WHR platform and the loco ran to refuel in the yard. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 14:16 into the FR platform over 20 minutes late and David Lloyd George ran round and coupled onto the rear of the rake, exchanging duties. After fuelling and watering run round came at 17:25 but then waited for the late running Mountain Spirit to arrive which was in section. David Lloyd George pulled in at 17:47, some 37 minutes late and Merddin Emrys left with its ECS a minute later. The Fairlie completed its run round at 18:05 and departed at 18:09 with the ECS to close the day's activities.

Allelys transformer delivery

Images of the transformer deliver have now been published showing the new transformer for Trawsfynydd being delivered by flat bottom seagoing barge at Black Rock Sands, repeating the process used for the 2020 delivery. See Heavy Lift story.

Claytons providing narrow gauge battery locos

Claytons, who are providing standard gauge battery shunters to industry, are constructing a 15" gauge Co-Co lead-acid battery loco for the Bure Valley Railway. The RH&DR and R&ER are also in discussion with Claytons and the BVR design was finalised after 3 years of discussion. The loco agreed for the BVR is rated at 94kW on an 8 hour overnight charge and capable or hauling 75 tonnes for up to 70 miles. The F&WHR is looking for a battery rescue loco and will no doubt take an interest when the BVR's loco is delivered in November to see if it lives up to its promise.

SMR reopens to summit

The Snowdon Mountain Railway's Summit Station (Hafod Eryri) reopened from 24/6/23. Services had previously terminated at Clogwyn 3/4 up the mountain since 2019. Walkers complained about excessive noise and inappropriate behaviour by some visitors to the summit in early July. See Lancs Live report.

F&WHR 15/7/23

The weather forecast for Saturday 15/7/23 was for an overcast day of thunderstorms with temperatures of 14-16C. Saturday's service pattern was for five FR trains including The Quarryman but just the two through trains on the WHR. The first train today was Vale of Ffestiniog that passed Minffordd light engine eastbound at 09:22. This may have been a train to check the line was clear through the woods to Tan-y-bwlch after the stormy weather of the previous night.

No.87 was on The Harbourmaster, departing on time at 10:05 as David Lloyd George approached on the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. Merddin Emrys arrived about half an hour later with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. this was the first time two Fairlies had been available for a couple of weeks following some failures in early July. Once the Mountain Spirit was clear of the shunt limit Merddin Emrys ran round at 10:50 ready got the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer.

At 11:00 Vale of Ffestiniog passed the Mountain Spirit light engine at Minffordd before heading for Boston Lodge.No.130 arrived at 12:28 with the Snowdonia Star into the WHR platform. The Garratt went to coal and water and was emerging from the yard as Blanche arrived with The Quarryman. The Garratt ran round at 13:00 ready for the 14:05 return working. Meanwhile Blanche ran round and removed its rake to the sidings to clear the platform for Merddin Emrys, which arrived back at 13:28 with the returning Woodland Wanderer.

Merddin Emrys swopped duties and returned on the Mountain Spirit passing Minffordd at 18.36 and arriving in Porthmadog about 10 minutes later. The ECS was disposed at about 18:00 to close the day's activities.

James Spooner progress 14/7/23

The boiler for James Spooner passed its hydraulic test on 14/7/23 and so its 10 year ticket begins. It is hoped the third double Fairlie can be completed later this year. The loco may appear in a cameo role and be named at a later event (FR Bygones Gala in October?) and may appear in photo-charters possibly in November.

New works shunter for Boston Lodge 14/7/23

The F&WHR won the auction of Hunslet works No.9349 from the disposal of Adrian Shooter's fleet. The loco arrived at Minffordd Yard on 14/7/23 and is currently in DHR blue livery. It is one of 6 locos built for the Jubilee Line extension construction works of 1994. See Festipedia No.9394 page. Two others of the same type, Emma and Kathy, were acquired by the WHHR in 2003 following disposal after completion of the underground line. See the WHHR's Emma and Kathy website.

F&WHR 14/7/23

The weather forecast for Friday 13/7/23 was for an overcast day of showers with temperatures of 15-18C. Friday's service pattern was for four FR trains and just one on the WHR, the Gelert Explorer.

Lilla was first up shunting empty B wagons in the station yard at 09:40. Merddin Emrys arrived shortly after 10:00 and had run round by 10:25 ready for the 10:45 departure on the Mountain Spirit. Lilla was noted shunting again at 10:30. Lyd arrived at 10:40 with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform. Both trains left on time.

Lilla continued to shunt the yard at 11:23 and at 10.32 propelled an empty B wagon out of the yard whilst dragging a short works train towards Minffordd Yard. At 12:43 Harlech Castle returned to Minffordd Yard from the east with the FR Mess car and cherry picker in a works train.

Lyd was running round the Woodland Wanderer at 17:10 in the WHR platform. It departed a minute after the Fairlie arrived into the FR platform at 17:20. Merddin Emrys was coupled up by 17:35 and departed with the ECS at 17:37 to close the day's activities.

How do steam engines work?

Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project workshop

This August the F&WHR will be hosting a number of ‘How Do Steam Engines Work?’ workshops at Boston Lodge, all thanks to the Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project. These will be short, practical workshops lasting approximately 3 hours, where participants get to help prepare a loco, see it in action close up, receive information on ‘How it works’ then have a go at firing and driving in the yard.
Tickets for these workshops are £50.00, and they will take place on the 4th, 11th, 18th, & 25th of August.
Please Note: the nature of the workshop site and the locos themselves means that attendees must be able to walk across uneven surfaces and climb up and down into the locos. All attendees should read the information on the Workshop webpage carefully and watch the Safety Briefing video, before booking your ticket/s. Unless specifically advertised all workshops and tours are for adults (16+). Full details regarding the Interpretation & Boston Lodge Project and ticket booking links available here: https://nlhfproject.festrail.co.uk/workshops/

F&WHR 13/7/23

The weather forecast for Thursday 13/7/23 was for an overcast day of showers with temperatures of 15-17C. Thursday's service pattern was for five FR trains including The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR.

F&WHR 12/7/23

The weather forecast for Wednesday 12/7/23 was for an overcast day of showers with temperatures of 12-17C. Wednesday's service pattern was for one FR train the Mountain Spirit and three on the WHR, including two The Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer. It seemed the Woodland Wanderer had been repurposed for a special working, probably The Snowdonia Statesman from Kilmarnock which was due to arrive diesel hauled at 12:59 and departing again at 16:08 giving passengers 3 hours to sample a trip on the FR to Tan-y-bwlch and back. As The Quarryman is not running today this rake could have been used and it is already available stabled at Glan-y-pwll but it is possible the organiser requested heritage coaches. The excursion was hauled by two Class 47s (Nos. 47810/828).

First today was No.130 which was ready to depart from the WHR platform at 10:10 on the 10:15 The Aberglaslyn as Merddin Emrys pulled in on the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. Welsh Pony and Lyd turned up in the FR platform with a 10 coach rake including The Woodland Wanderer set at 11:09. run round was complete by 12:20 with Lyd on the front and Welsh Pony inside facing backwards. The train set off at 11:30 for Blaenau Ffestiniog.

The special was due to leave Blaenau Ffestiniog about 16:00 and passed though Minffordd at 17:06 with Welsh Pony leading Lyd. The train arrived back in Porthmadog at about 17:15 into the FR platform. Run round came at about 17:35 and the train left ECS for the depot at 17:40 to close the day's activities.

Main Line news

Class 37 No.97301 (ex No.37100) moved to Nottingham Eastcroft in May from storage at Loram, Derby, for component recovery before continuing to Peak Rail Rowsley. The power unit was used to get No.97303 working again. The ERTMS equipment is of a different design to the three working examples (Nos.97302-4) so is not useful.

With both Porterbrook and Angel trains disposing HST fleets, the opportunity is there for TfW to acquire some HST sets at a knock down discount to bolster the very poor express services from North Wales to Cardiff and reintroduce services to Manchester and Birmingham airport. Trains on the North Wales coast are often Class 150s which are totally inadequate for long journeys and a single Holyhead-Cardiff loco hauled train is the only express on the route.. North Wales passengers are being short changed by TfW who seem to be looking after south Wales in preference!

DHR 19B at Statfold

The Darjeeling loco is now at Statfold Barn near Lichfield and was followed by coach No.73 on 9/7/23 and the brake coach No.154 on 11/7/23. Once the carriages have been inspected for their RTR exam they will be available to run in association with the loco. 19B passed its Fitness To Run examination and the expert team at Statfold confirmed that the loco is sound, if a little tired mechanically after 20 years use. The engineering team is certain it will be able to restore the loco to full use quite soon and then it can start visiting 2' gauge railways around the country including a return visit to the WHR! It has already had a trial run around the Statfold circuit.

F&WHR 11/7/23

The weather forecast for Tuesday 11/7/23 was for a day of showers and sunny periods with temperatures of 13-17C. Tuesday's service pattern was for five FR trains including The Quarryman but just the two through trains on the WHR.

First up was The Harbourmaster hauled by No.130. As the train prepared to depart. Merddin Emrys pulled in with the Mountain Spirit at 10:04.A little later it ran round and removed the Observation coach and propelled it to the seawall siding where it collected 3 coaches and returned with the four coaches to restore the Mountain Spirit to full length. Lyd pulled in with the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform at about 10:30. All trains left on time.

No.87 arrived with the Snowdonia Star and ran round at 13:10. Blanche was shunting The Quarryman into the yard around this time. Lyd arrived back with the Woodland Wanderer in the FR platform at 13:18. This was promptly shunted out of the FR platform and led back into the yard to clear the FR platform for the Mountain Spirit's arrival at 13:45. Blanche and Lyd were running round in the yard not long afterwards and Lyd propelled its rake into the FR platform, departing on time at 14:35 with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer.

Blanche passed Minffordd at 15:15 with the returning The Quarryman. The Garratt left with the ECS from the Harbourmaster at 16:51.Lyd ran round at 17;10 and shunted the open coach off the Woodland Wanderer to the seawall siding at 17:11. The Mountain Spirit rolled into the WHR platform at 17:15 double headed with Merddin Emrys and Welsh Pony inside while Lyd ran round its ECS. It was a mystery as to how Welsh Pony came to be on this train as it did not leave Porthmadog on any of the advertised services so it may have been stabled up at Glan-y-pwll. The Woodland Wanderer ECS departed at 17:21 which allowed the Fairlie and its partner to run to the fuelling point in the yard. they separated at the signalbox and the Fairlie refuelled alone with Welsh Pony working to the sidings to ait its turn. Welsh Pont led the pair out of the yard to couple up at 17:57 and depart with the ECS at 17:59 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 10/7/23

The weather forecast for Monday 10/7/23 was for heavy rain with temperatures of 15-19C. Monday's service is a repeat of Sunday's with four FR trains planned but just the one Gelert Explorer on the WHR.

Lyd was first up with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit arriving in the FR platform at 09:58. Lyd ran round while Blanche arrived in the WHR platform with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. It seems both double Fairlies are unavailable. Lyd returned at 13:42 on time with some out of course running as the Woodland Wanderer had not returned. The train must have passed the Woodland Wanderer somewhere as Blanche arrived back in the WHR at 14:08 nearly 50 minutes late and the passengers detrained. Blanche seemed to be OK as the loco unhooked and extracted the front three coaches to reduce the Woodland Wanderer to a 4 coach rake at 14:12 as the Mountain Spirit left on time. The shortening of the rake maybe because of reduced numbers of passengers, thus saving fuel. At 14:25 the loco ran to fuel and water and completed the run round at 14:37. Departure with the shortened Woodland Wanderer came at 14:40, some 5 minutes late.

The first one back was Blanche and at 17:00 the loco collected the three coaches from the seawall siding and shunted them back onto the rake in the FR platform to reform the full length Woodland Wanderer. Lyd returned at 17:07 allowing the Woodland Wanderer ECS to depart at 17:08. At 17:14 Lyd ran to fuel and water. The loco returned to the ECS t 17:30 and departed with the train at 17:32 to close the day's activities.

North Wales Mainline trains

The Aberystwyth-Kronospan logs on 23/6/23 was hauled by Nos.97303/37405.

Class 37 (97302) with inspection saloon travelled along the Cambrian Coast on 10/7/23. It was 2Z66, the 08:15 Shrewsbury to Barmouth. It was due to return as 2Z67 to Machynlleth at 11:58. The Northern Belle is considering an excursion to the Cambrian Coast for 2024.

On 26/6/23 67017 was on the sole loco hauled Holyhead-Cardiff. Other Holyhead-Cardiff trains included 150259. TfW are really letting down North Wales by providing Class 150s on these internal long distance trips!

Ballast continues to leave Penmaenmawr for Longport with Class 70s now quite common with No.70811 on both 19 and 22/6/23. Llandudno Junction Yard is still providing limestone trains and slate waste trains to Wellingborough.No.66777 Annette was on the Wellingborough working on 26/6/23.

F&WHR 9/7/23

The weather forecast for Sunday 9/7/23 was for sunny periods with temperatures of 15-20C. Four FR trains were planned but just the one Gelert Explorer on the WHR.

The STOP board on the Mineral Line at Minffordd was removed at 08:40. First train today was Lyd arriving in the FR platform with the 10:45 Mountain Prince. This had already run round by 10:25 when Blanche arrived with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer and immediately ran to the fuelling point. Blanche must have returned late in the evening from Glan-y-pwll, possibly with The Quarryman rake for maintenance as that is required TThO next week. Lyd was hauling a well filled 7 coach version of the Mountain Spirit today with Observation cars Gwynedd at the east end and Eryri -Snowdonia at the west end.

Lilla departed Porthmadog station yard at midday with empty B coal wagons Nos.1834/5. At 12:20 these were hauled into Minffordd Yard to replenish the coal supply.

This westerly view (9/7/23) shows Lilla hauling the two empty B wagons into Minffordd Yard to be refill with coal for the fuelling point. This image is courtesy F&WHR web camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

Blanche was back at 13:19 with the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform uncoupled and ran to the yard to water and refuel. Lilla arrived back light engine at 13:30. Lyd returned with the Mountain Prince at 12:43 into the FR platform. Lyd ran round quickly after fuelling/watering for the on time 14:10 departure. Blanche had to wait for clearance before running round at 14:15 for the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer which left on time.

Lilla shunted the 9 wagon skip train from the seawall siding to the yard at 14:25. These had been used at the WHHR 2 weeks previously to simulate WHR construction trains. It is believed the rake was moved to Minffordd yard later for storage. Blanche returned at 16:46 into the FR platform.

Lyd arrived back at 17:10 while Lilla was shunting the yard. Blanche departed with its ECS at 17:13 and Lilla departed light engine at 17:20 after Lyd had gone to the fuelling point. Lyd returned to its ECS train at 17:35 and departed a few minutes later to close the day's activities.

The Cwellyn cut back to August running dates

The summer dated The Cwellyn service from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu has been cut back to run for the 5 weeks of August from 1-31/8/23 on TWThO despite school holidays starting in late July. On Tuesdays and Thursdays two trains run from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu at 12:00 and 15:15 giving a 30 minute break at Rhyd Ddu. On Wednesdays there is only one train and it is retimed to 12:30 but also gives 30 minutes at Rhyd Ddu. This is because every Wednesday it follows the 11:30 Gelert Explorer. On Tuesday and Thursday it follows the 10:10 Snowdonia Star but is due to cross The Harbourmaster at Dinas at 12:10 and at 14:20 on its return. The afternoon working follows the returning The Harbourmaster to Rhyd Ddu.

F&WHR 8/7/23

The weather forecast for Saturday 8/7/23 was for sunny periods in the afternoon with temperatures of 13-22C after an overcast start. Five FR trains were planned including The Quarryman but just the two through trains on the WHR.

Lyd continues to be used on the Woodland Wanderer. Merddin Emrys appeared on the Mountain Spirit instead of David Lloyd George. No.143 was on the Snowdonia Star running round in the WHR platform at 12:55 for the 14:05 return service. Lyd arrived back about 13:20 and Blanche was shunting in the yard having removed The Quarryman from the FR platform earlier.

Britomart and Moelwyn turned up in the WHR platform light engine after the Garratt had left. Lyd departed on time shortly afterwards at 14:36. Blanche then shunted The Quarryman rake to the FR platform for the 15:05 return service. The two light engines were back in the WHR having run round each other at 15:30 as Blanche departed 30 minutes late at 15:34.

First of the returning services was No.130 on The Harbourmaster at 16:22 and 10 minutes later the ECS had already departed for the depot. The Woodland Wanderer returned at 17:17 behind Welsh Pony though it is uncertain how and where this loco took over the train as it definitely left behind Lyd at lunchtime. This could be the reason why Blanche was delayed by half an hour starting from Porthmadog. Welsh Pony ran round at 17:40.

Lyd arrived double headed with Merddin Emrys at 17:52 into the WHR platform so it seems Merddin Emrys had failed again and Lyd had been sent from Tan-y-bwlch to rescue it while Welsh Pony had been dispatched light engine to Tan-y-bwlch to take over Lyd's working. Britomart and Welsh Pony departed double headed at 18:02 with the ECS of the Woodland Wanderer. Lyd and the Fairlie ran to the fuelling point and Lyd emerged dragging the Fairlie at 18:34 and departed with the ECS to close the day's activities at 18:38.

Barmouth Bridge girders

Having arrived by road and causing some congestion the first pair of girders have now been erected on a temporary foundation at Morfa Mawddach. See Cambrian Railways Past and Present Facebook page for images.

NR have now updated their schedules for this Autumn's up to 13 week bridge closure. See NR Barmouth Bridge webpage. This time a combination of buses and train services will operate on the Cambrian Coast presumably out of an improvised Barmouth Depot as previously.

There are also videos of the double headed Class 37 Aberystwyth-Chirk Kronospan log train which ran on Saturday morning (normally at FO STP) on this page. 6C55 ran as a VST 09:50 with a 97/3 on the front for the ERTMS and a Colas 37 inside via Chester (reverse). How long can it be before a facing crossover is put in at Chirk to remove all this unproductive mileage between Chirk and Chester and return?

F&WHR 7/7/23

The weather forecast for Friday 7/7/23 was for a sunny afternoon with temperatures of 19-22C after an overcast start. Four FR trains were planned but just one , the Gelert Explorer, on the WHR.

The Mineral Line Junction at Minffordd received some maintenance around 09:00. At 10:13 David Lloyd George was running round the 10:45 Mountain Spirit in the FR platform with Lyd approaching across The Cob on the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. By 10:30 the loco had run round its rake in the WHR platform and subsequently left on time.

Lyd arrived back at 13:18 into the WHR platform and promptly ran to the yard to refuel. The Fairlie was next into the FR platform and ran to the refuelling point to fuel and water. The loco ran round at 14:05 and departed on time with the 14:10 Mountain Spirit. Lyd now completed its run round and departed on time with the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer.

Lyd was first back and ran round by 17:00 unusually in the FR platform. The Fairlie rolled into the WHR platform at 17:09 and Lyd left with its ECS a minute later while the Fairlie commenced its run round. The last movement of the day was the ECS for the Mountain Spirit.

Loco roster w/c 8/7/23

There's a little more variety in the Loco Roster this coming week - with a total of NINE locos due to seen in action on passenger trains.
On the Ffestiniog Railway: David Lloyd George, Merddin Emrys and Blanche will again be in action on our regular train services - while Welsh Pony, Lyd and Britomart can be seen on a couple of private charters. It would appear that Merddin Emrys has been repaired.
On the Welsh Highland Railway: All three NG/G16s - Nos.87/130/143 - will be working the service train roster between them and may on occasion exchange duties at Beddgelert.

FO Aberystwyth wood train rolls again 30/6/23

The Short Term Path for the occasional Fridays Only Kronospan wood train from Aberystwyth to Chirk Kronospan Siding was used on Friday 30/6/23. Colas No.56078 took over after leaving Cambrian metals and reversed at Chester. The wagons were back at Aberystwyth on Friday 7/7/23 but the train did not run.

GVT 150th Anniversary Gala 8-9/7/23

This weekend the Glyn Valley Tramway at Chirk is having a Gala event. Track has been extended through the platform and under Station Road Bridge to the depot area. Some wagons have been borrowed from the TR which has the same gauge. They will give horse drawn rides in the platform area. It is 88 years to the day since the GVT stopped operations on 6/7/1935. Eighty eight sleepers have been laid in the platform to celebrate the anniversary. Also open between 10:00 -17:00 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the railway's opening are the old Glyn Ceiriog Station and museum, Pontfadog Waiting Room and the Old Coal Wharf with a heritage bus shuttle between the locations. Remains of a Baldwin are stored at the Glyn Ceiriog museum.

Llangollen receives Class 25

The LR which opened to its new Corwen station June will be operating a Class 25 diesel over the summer holidays, a very appropriate diesel for the route. Waterman Heritage Trust is sending green 25309 (D7659) to Llangollen after the G&WR Diesel Gala. The loco will arrive at Llangollen on 17/7/23 and stay for the Diesel Gala 16-17/9/23.

Barmouth Bridge steelwork disruption

Considerable disruption was caused to the road network of Mid Wales recently when large sections of completed steelwork for the Barmouth Bridge were brought in by road. This is quite surprising when the original steelwork for the bridge was most likely transported by rail to the site in 1867.

Class 230 borderlands problems

It has now been confirmed that one of the problems leading to frequent failures of these units is down to 'the wrong kind of pollen'!

F&WHR 6/7/23

The weather forecast for Thursday 6/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 16-18C. Five FR trains were planned including The Quarryman and the two through trains on the WHR.

No.130 was on the 10:05 The Harbourmaster and managed to depart just before the delayed exceptional load came across Britannia Bridge with its huge transformer for the National Grid connections at Trawsfynydd development. The transformer for the original Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station had been delivered by rail up the Conwy Valley line and a YouTube video shows the difficult movement that took place in the early 1960s. David Lloyd George hauled the 10:45 Mountain Spirit and Lyd the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer both leaving on time. At 12:06 Upnor Castle emerged light engine from Minffordd Yard an at 12:08 the loco ran through Minffordd reversed towards Porthmadog.

Blanche arrived at 12:50 with The Quarryman and the loco soon ran round and propelled the ECS into the yard to clear the FR platform for later arrivals. No.143 arrived on the Snowdonia Star into the WHR platform and the loco had refuelled by 13:10 and rejoined the train ready for the 14:05 return working. Lyd propelled the Woodland Wanderer out of the station at 13:25 and hauled the ECS back into the sidings to clear the FR platform. Blanche propelled The Quarryman back into the FR platform at 14:56 ready for the 15:05 return service to complete rush of midday movements.

The Garratt returned first on The Harbourmaster at about 16:25 and departed with the ECS at 16:38. Lyd was second back into the WHR platform at 16:57. The loco ran to the yard 3 minutes later. Lyd returned at 17:10 and the ECS departed just seconds after the Fairlie rolled in at 17:24. The Fairlie ran round at 17:38 and departed with the ECS at 17:42 to close the day's activities.

Small loco shed update 4/7/22

The so called 'small' Loco Shed (the future 9-11 roads) will be able to take a Garratt loco in roads 10/11. Road 11 could even take 2 double Fairlies or an NG15. Road 10 could take 2 Penrhyn Ladies. This begs the question about the necessity to provide a large loco shed next door over the Garratt pit.

With the walls and roof now complete the shed is a dark cavern until lighting and power sockets are provided There are no clear panels in the roof as photocells will be provided at some stage on the west face to help keep down Boston Lodge's electricity bill. Rails have now been fitted across the pit and Brunswick Ironworks Caernarfon will provide the walking grids to make the pit safe.

Pedestrian doors will be fitted this week, the windows are being made, and the large roller doors for tracks 9-11 will be fitted later. Volunteers will be laying the remaining tracks this Autumn and the shed should be available for use this Winter.

Abnormal load congestion 6/7/23

Another abnormal load was landed at Black Rock Sands and transported to Trawsfynydd. This is another large transformer to upgrade the National Grid connection facilities at the former Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station. The transporter lorries and escort vehicles were scheduled to leave the beach at 09:00 - travelling through Porthmadog and along the A497/A487/A470 to Trawsfynydd potentially causing congestion in High Street.

WAG relieved there will be no Investiture

The new Prince of Wales has said there will be no Investiture on the scale King Charles had in Caernarfon in 1/7/1969 when Prince Charles was formally invested as Prince of Wales many years after the accession of Queen Elizabeth. Plans to reopen the Bangor-Caernarfon railway must have been on the back burner for many years for just this occasion but have been gathering dust. In 1969 the Royal Train came to the closed Dinas BR station and various specials were parked on the section of line retained for the purpose between Caernarfon and Dinas.

Local pressure groups such as TRAWS have been pushing for the Bangor-Afonwen line to be reopened as well as Aberystwyth-Carmarthen line for many years now and a full feasibility study for the latter has been published. It is clear now that WAG will do nothing towards reinstatement of Bangor-Caernarfon, especially now the interim report by the North Wales Transport Commission (see below) suggests an improved bus service would be more appropriate for Bangor-Caernarfon.

Ceredigion consider footpath on Aberystwyth-Carmarthen trackbed

Ceredigion councillors have discussed the 97% vacant Aberystwyth-Carmarthen trackbed and having heard that WAG is unlikely to proceed to reopen the line in the next 30-40 years they considered turning it into a long distance footpath/cycle as some sections between Aberystwyth and Lampeter already have. This generated controversy in local papers as the route has an active pressure group, TRAWS, seeking to reopen it as a through railway. See South Wales Guardian news story.

TRAWS responded to the challenge to its rail revival plans and within a few weeks gathered over 11,000 signatures supporting a petition to reopen both Bangor-Afonwen and Aberystwyth-Carmarthen rail routes which will now lead to a debate in WAG after the petition closes on 23/10/23. See TRAWS press release. To read and sign the Petition click here.

F&WHR 5/7/23

The weather forecast for Wednesday 5/7/23 was for an overcast day with temperatures of 13-16C. Five FR trains were planned including The Quarryman and three trains on the WHR, two Aberglaslyn trains and the Gelert Explorer.

First up today was No.143 with the ECS for The Aberglaslyn arriving into the WHR platform at 09:43 due to depart at 10:15. At 10:00 a school party appeared to join the train. David Lloyd George appeared in the FR platform ar 10:11 with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit and ran round at 10:20. Once the Garratt had left, Lyd approached with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer across The Cob into the WHR platform arriving at 10:22 and running round at 10:25.

At 12:54 Blanche was running round the recently arrived The Quarryman and preparing to shunt it to the yard. At 12:56 No.143 arrived back with The Aberglaslyn. The Garratt also shunted to the fuelling point at 13:07 to prepare for the afternoon working of The Aberglaslyn. The Garratt was back by 13:25 ready for the 13:40 departure which left on time. The Mountain Spirit was back at 13:50 and the Fairlie ran to the yard to refuel before returning at 14:15. The train departed about 7 minutes late. Blanche left about 5 minutes late with the 15:10 The Quarryman.

The final returning train was the Mountain Spirit with David Lloyd George which arrived back about 17:20. The ECS about half an hour later closed the day's activities.

Baldwin No.590 test trains

Many visitors to WHR100 will have been disappointed not to see No.590 is action. The loco was tested extensively by the F&WHR/WHHR in the days up to its WHHR launch and again up to the day it's failure was announced with a hot box. Dave Mellor (WHHR) videoed one of the test train on 23/5/23 on a test trip with Van No.7 and a B921 loaded with loco ash on a trip to Beddgelert and back and other runs until 21/6/23.

Click on the YouTube link to watch 28 minutes 42 seconds of video covering the tests on No.590 prior to WHR100 Gala. This video was published on 29/6/23 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by Dave Mellor (WHHR) on a camcorder.

Rescue diesels project abandoned

The Regenerative Railway booklet recently sent out to F&WHR supporters reveals that the Rescue Diesels project to equip the FR and WHR with a loco capable of rescuing a failed 11 coach train has been quietly dropped. Instead in these decarbonising times, the F&WHR will be looking to battery electric locos such as those recently built by Clayton for the standard gauge. in the meantime, both Funkeys remain as rescue locos although underpowered for this purpose.

Surprisingly, about half the train miles worked by the F&WHR are works trains, mostly operated by diesels. In the interests of decarbonisation, the F&WHR is working with expert volunteers and institutions to provide an alternative and a budget of £3 million has been allocated for this purpose.

New Carriage Shed Solar success

Almost 50,000 kWh of energy was generated by the photovoltaic cells on the roof of the new Carriage Shed at Boston Lodge last year. The energy can be used to illuminate the shed, provide power for carriage battery chargers or power tools for repair and maintenance or feed back into the National Grid thereby reducing the Works electricity bill!

Dinas investment

A few hundred thousand pounds of investment is to be made at Dinas to improve facilities. Plans are underway for a new Carriage shed in the North Yard with access at both ends to ease train disposal at the end of the day. This may be a reworking of the existing shed where recently the north end doors have been opened and surveys taken for pointwork that might lead to the headshunt. The crossover would need to be moved to a point just north of the north end of the shed. Loss of the headshunt/stabling siding would mean moving siding space for infrastructure machines and PW wagons to the South Yard, where a new Running Shed is planned along with a volunteer workshop and messing facilities.

F&WHR 4/7/23

The weather forecast for Tuesday 4/7/23 was for a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 12-17C and sunny periods and showers. Five FR trains were planned including The Quarryman but just the two through trains on the WHR.

Fist up was blanche with a light engine run to Glan-y-pwll passing Minffordd at 09:32. The loco was set to haul the ECS for the Quarryman service into Blaenau Ffestiniog. The 10:05 Harbourmaster which was standing in the WHR platform at 09:45 ready to depart.

This westerly view (4/7/23@09:32) shows Blanche heading west light engine to pick up the ECS The Quarryman from Glan-y-pwll depot. This image is courtesy F&WHR web camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

By 10:20 the Fairlie had arrived and run round the 10:45 Mountain Spirit in the FR platform. Lyd arrived at 10:26 in the WHR platform with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. Run round came at 10:30. The Tan-y-bwlch webcam was off line for a while during the morning. The Snowdonia Star arrived by 12:30 and the loco worked to the fuelling point. The loco returned and coupled up again at 12:45 ready for the 14:05 return working. Blanche arrived at 12:49 with The Quarryman. At 12:53 the loco ran round and dragged the rake out before shunting it into the sidings at 13:00 to leave the FR platform clear for the Woodland Wanderer to return. Lyd left about 10 minutes late on the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer.

First of the retuning trains was No.143 on the Harbourmaster arriving at 16:24. Lyd was back at 16:45 allowing the Garratt depart with the ECS a minute later. Lastly the Fairlie returned about 17:15 and closed the day's activities when it hauled the ECS back about half an hour later.

Baldwin No.590 repair

It seems it may be some months before Baldwin No.590 is repaired. The WHHR will want to look at all the bearings so will need to lift the loco. The disassembly will be complicated because of the bar frame design adopted for these Baldwins. Let us hope that one or the other Baldwin might be ready and able to travel the whole length of the WHR by the time of the WHRS AGM/Members' Day on 16/9/23.

F&WHR 3/7/23

The weather forecast for Monday 3/7/23 was for an improving day with temperatures of 11-16C and sunny periods and showers. Four FR trains were planned but just the Gelert Explorer on the WHR, a copy of Sunday's services.

David Lloyd George was on the 10:45 Mountain Spirit followed by Lyd on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. At 11:35 the Vale of Ffestiniog arrived wrong line in Minffordd with the 6 wagon rake from yesterday's transfer working from Dinas. However this time many of the wagons were filled with fencing materials. The train was shunted into the yard at 11:40 and the loco returned light engine at 11:49 before continuing light to Porthmadog at 11:52.

Both the afternoon workings were on time and retained the same haulage. Lyd returned on time followed by the Fairlie, which was delayed by almost 15 minutes by the need to hand crank the points at the Mineral Line junction. Lyd departed Porthmadog with its ECS at 17:20 a minute after the Fairlie's arrival. At 17:32 the loco shunted to the seawall siding to remove the Observation car that failed during the WHR100 Gala. This was shunted onto the front of the train before it left ECS at about 17:45 to close the day's activities.

North Wales Transport Commission report rejects 'Rolling back Beeching'

The Interim report from the North Wales Transport Commission formed in 2022 has delivered a blow to those hopeful of rail reopening. Instead it favours more buses which won't do much for the congestion over the Menai Straits with a third crossing also recently rejected. This is further evidence of WAG's bias against North Wales when it comes to Transport Policy. They reject both Afonwen-Caernarfon-Bangor and Amlwch re-openings, in the later case suggesting a long distance cycle route! Instead they focus on Wrexham - Chester where the only meaningful increase in capacity could be obtained by re-dualling throughout up the Gresford Bank which will involve an expensive second bridge over the A483. It also refers to the possibility of through services to Liverpool on the Wrexham-Bidston Line using MerseyRail Class 777 battery-electric trains.

The report very parochial and does not consider services outside Wales. The through services to Manchester and Birmingham airports lost over the years get no mention. Although paths through Oxford Road are at a premium these days, the proposed 3 mile extension from Mobberley to Manchester airport would allow another route into Piccadilly and provide good employment opportunities and international travel for the people of North Wales.

Dealing with specific proposals, rationalisation at Chester now impedes development of the new services the Commission would like to see so 'capacity improvements' at Chester are a major aim to facilitate improved services on North Wales to Crewe for connections e.g. HS2 and north south routes such as Shrewsbury to the Northern Powerhouse network. Signalling from the Cardiff ROC should be extended to Llandudno/Holyhead allowing three phases of service improvement:

  • Llandudno - Crewe
  • Llandudno - Bangor
  • Bangor-Holyhead

Llandudno used to receive long distance services from England, e.g. Manchester to Llandudno, and the Commission would like to see these reinstated. The issue will be examined in the final report.

The Borderlands Line is referred to and the conflict with freight services which NR has identified as needing resolution, particularly the new rail access to the Padeswood Cement sidings and signalling renewal to allow improved frequency.

Signalling improvements at Gobowen are prioritised but also required at Chirk, Ruabon and Wrexham to improve service frequency on this route.

On the Cambrian Coast and Conwy Valley lines, reinstatement of passing loops is suggested to improve service frequency. Additional services should be run in the holiday season. No mention is made of the ERTMS debacle that restricts visiting excursions on the Cambrian.

New stations are supported at Deeside Industrial Park (ex Shotton Steelworks) and improved interchange at Shotton between High Level and Low Level platforms. Other new stations such as Holywell Junction are not supported as 'they might lead to increased journey times'.

For full details see North Wales Transport Commission Interim Report. The fact that the report uses a small 'n' for North Wales rather spells out the attitude of the production team even though they allow the phrase 'North Wales Main Line'!

Railway Magazine WHR history essay prize winner

FR Board Member Stephen Murfitt has won the £500 prize to commemorate the history of the WHR in this 100th anniversary year. The essay subject was The Saint's Way, an abortive project to join all three Welsh National Parks using the WHR and other closed trackbeds. Fortunately for the WHR the project did not succeed!

F&WHR 2/7/23

The weather forecast for Sunday 2/7/23 was for an improving day with temperatures of 11-17C and sunny periods in the afternoon. Four FR trains were planned but just the Gelert Explorer on the WHR.

At 10:00 Dinas was a hive of activity with No130 being coaled ready for the 11:30 service and Caernarfon Castle shunting a rake of B and DZ wagons which were left on the Goods shed siding after WHR100. The rake was propelled into the bay and the loco used the new crossover to run round the 5 wagons. Eventually the train pulled forward into the platform and departed towards Waunfawr at about 10:30. While this was happening No.130 extracted the rake from the Carriage shed into the bay platform and used the new crossover to run round. Normally the Funkey takes the rake down to Caernarfon while the steam loco is prepared.

The train was noted passing Plas-y-nant at 10:56 and departing Rhyd Ddu towards Beddgelert half an hour later but then had not appeared at Ynysfor Crossing by 12:30 so probably waited at Beddgelert. At midday a member of staff gave a thorough examination of all the signage at Ynysfor level crossing.

David Lloyd George was on the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. Lyd was noted on the 14:35 Woodland Wanderer departure from Porthmadog. The Fairlie arrived back in Porthmadog about 15:15 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 1/7/23

The weather forecast for Saturday 1/7/23 was for an improving day with temperatures of 12-18C and sunny periods in the afternoon. Five FR trains were planned but just the two through trains on the WHR.

First out was Harlech Castle which emerged from Minffordd Yard at 08:00 propelling a works train and the FR Mess wagon. David Lloyd George was on the Mountain Spirit with Lyd following on the Woodland Wanderer. Blanche was on The Quarryman.

Lyd arrived back about 16:50 from its second trip followed by David Lloyd George at about 17:20 to close the day's activities once the ECS trains were disposed.

Locos roster 1-7/7/23
After the frenetic activity of the 'WHR 100' event, things have gradually settled back into the familiar pattern of train services. As a result, the coming week's Loco Roster features just five different locomotives on passenger turns.
On the Ffestiniog Railway: David Lloyd George, Merddin Emrys and Blanche will be in action on the regular train services.
On the Welsh Highland Railway: NG/G16s Nos.130/143 will be covering the service train roster…
