F&WHR 28/9/22

Wednesday saw sunny periods at Porthmadog with a maximum temperature of a chilly 13C! There were four services booked on the FR and two on the WHR  (two Woodland Wanderers and Mountain Spirits and the Gelert Explorer and The Harbourmaster).

Thursday's trains will see the Glaslyn Venturer and Gelert Explorer and Friday has no trains on the WHR.

Review of '0' gauge Presflo 'Tunnel Cement' wagon

Ellis Clarke Trains, a newcomer to production of model railway rolling stock, has ordered 28 different versions of the Presflo cement wagon that was common on BR until 1987. The company is more famous for buying collections of rolling left when people leave the hobby. The Tunnel Cement version would have been seen in North Wales operating out of the Padeswood Cement works on the Borderlands Line. Destinations included Bangor Yard and the short lived A55 Conwy Harbour Tunnel Expressway construction works sidings at Conwy Morfa. There are 4 different versions of the wagon, all with different numbers and one unnumbered for enthusiasts to apply their own number, covering both TOPS and pre-TOPS versions. The wagon comes with many small details already fitted and a detail pack containing extra items.

This (28/9/22) view shows the substantial box that the Presflo wagon comes in. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is copyright Barrie Hughes and was taken on an iPhone digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The model retails at £69.99, a steep price but for 'finescale' detail, with reductions for buying a rake of the wagons. While the finish is excellent in BR Bauxite livery, there are a few points to note. Many other users of this type of wagon fitted large side boards to the wagons to carry their company logos e.g. Blue Circle. Tunnel Cement may have this too but while Blue Circle versions of the model wagons do carry side boards, Ellis Clarke Trains do not offer this version for the Tunnel Cement models which 00 gauge versions of the wagons by Wrenn etc in grey livery do carry the side panels. Model numbers are E3002A-E3002C and the unnumbered version E3002U.

This (28/9/22) view shows the tight foam that cushions the Presflo wagon inside the box. Indeed the foam is so tight that unless great care is taken it might break the step ladder handle on the top right when removing or replacing the model in the box. A fine detail pack ins included in a plastic bag top left, Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is copyright Barrie Hughes and was taken on an iPhone digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

With so many tiny details, extracting the model from the tight foam protection is a problem and more space should have been left around the ladder as friction had rubbed off the white paint from the ladder on my model and might break the hand rail if pushed back into the foam for storage. Altogether the model is a realistic version of the wagon as seen on the North Wales Coast in the 1980s and would suit many '0' gauge layouts, though a typical 10 wagon rake would set you back £650!

This (28/9/22) view shows the model complete with 3 link coupling and vacuum hoses and the booklet offering other variants. The yellow Blue Circle Cement version shown on the leaflet has the large side panels for the company name whereas Tunnel Cement's name is applied directly to the bodyside between the ribs that strengthen the body. Some models may choose to connect wagons with small paperclips as the sprung couplings can prove fragile and fiddly to connect. F&WHR 27/9/22

Tuesday saw showers and sunny periods at Porthmadog with a maximum temperature of a chilly 12C! There were four services booked on the FR and two on the WHR  (two Woodland Wanderers and Mountain Spirits and the Gelert Explorer and afternoon Glaslyn Venturer).

The first train was hauled by David Lloyd George followed by Blanche on the Woodland Wanderer. No.87 departed on the Glaslyn Venturer at 13:42 as the Fairlie returned. No.130 and No.87 must have exchanged duties recently.

FR Bygones weekend 7-9/10/22

The FR's annual event comes with several trips on the Beddgelert-Porthmadog section of the WHR using a Vintage Train set with at two trips on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday. See Bygones Event timetable for full details. For full details of what is on see the F&WHR's Bygones Event page.

Mainline Rail 21-26/9/22

21/9/22 saw DB silver liveried 67029 Royal Diamond and a rake of ex-GC Mk4s being tested between Holyhead and Chester.

26/9/22 saw the Penmaenmawr-Tuebrook stone train operate after the previous week saw no service which was strange for a working advertised as weekly!

Review of O gauge models

The next edition will include a review of BR '0' gauge main line gauge models used in North Wales received for your webmaster's upcoming birthday.

Normal service resumed 26/9/22

Your webmaster has returned from 4 weeks holiday at Black Rock Sands despite the Llangynog Pass being blocked by a major RTA and diversions via Llangollen! Normal service will be resumed during the course of this week. Several minor corrections have been made to the website.

F&WHR 26/9/22

Monday saw showers and sunny periods at Porthmadog with a maximum temperature of a chilly 12C! There were three services booked on the FR (two Woodland Wanderers and one Mountain Spirit) but none on the WHR.

Merddin Emrys was on the morning Mountain Spirit and Blanche on the morning Woodland Wanderer. In the afternoon, Blanche on the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer experienced considerable slipping whilst starting from the FR platform with its sharp curve. Merddin Emrys departed with the ECS from the Mountain Spirit at 14:17.

Lyd may return from its visit to the L&BR in the course of the week.

L&BR to extend to Parracombe?

The L&BR applied to amend its planning permission in the Spring to allow it to build its extension to Wistlandpound in stages, permission having already been granted to rebuild the whole line. Assuming the variation was granted, the railway is intent on raising funds to build the section from the current terminus at Killington Lane (on a different alignment) to Parracombe Halt and has an appeal for the purpose which has already reached 1/3 of its total. At the restricted Parracombe site there appears to be insufficient room for a run round loop to accommodate the standard length rake that the L&BR runs. A sector plate or traverser may be necessary (as on the Corris railway) to allow the run round. All the land for the scheme is now in the L&BR's hands following purchase of Parracombe Halt in mid-2021. See Heritage Railway for purchase story. See L&BR website for more details of the Parracombe Appeal and how you can donate. Earlier in the year Parracombe Parish Council nimby's had caused the council to reject the amendment. See Parracombe Parish Council report.

F&WHR 22/9/22

Thursday 22/9/22 was a wet day at Porthmadog with a maximum temperature of 16C but the afternoon Woodland Wanderer was fully booked as a result. There were also afternoon workings for the Mountain Spirit and the Glaslyn Venturer.

Prince hauled the Woodland Wanderer and David Lloyd George the Mountain Spirit on the morning turns. No.130 hauled the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer and Blanche replaced Prince on the 14:55 Woodland Wanderer. Harlech Castle, presumably taken off a PW working, assisted Prince into Tan-y-bwlch on the 10:55 morning Woodland Wanderer after the train ran into trouble, delaying the returning Mountain Spirit, which was held at Tan-y-bwlch.

Lyd, which had left the FR earlier in the week, arrived at the L&BR on 22/9/22 for their Autumn Gala over the weekend of 24-25/9/22.

Holyhead to become a container railhead again? 22/9/22

The Daily Post has revealed that Stena, owner of Holyhead Port, has just bought the former Anglesey Aluminium factory with its 3km of sidings. The recent announcement of freight paths between Wembley and the Anglesey Aluminium sidings has led to speculation that the sidings will be used as a transfer point for Ro-Ro containers for RfD from Channel Tunnel traffic being forwarded to Ireland. The freight path already has a fixed SSuO headcode 4D62 (unlike some of the new North Wales freights, and continues until 9/12/22. The service will likely be electric hauled from Wembley and change to diesel haulage in Crewe Basford Hall sidings. The container sidings in Holyhead station were ripped up and turned into a car park decades ago. Other uses of the site are considered in the Daily Post story. The sidings are under a mile from the port loading ramps via the old A55.

F&WHR 21/9/22

With campsites reporting low levels of tourists after a surge over the extra Bank Holiday on 19/9/22, trains were expected to be lightly loaded. The weather at Porthmadog was sunny with a maximum temperature of 17C.

North Wales main line 9-19/9/22

Two of NR's yellow 97/3s, ex Class 37 hauled the Cambrian Coast Express to Pwllheli on 9/9/22. 97304 John Tilley and 97302 Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway top and tailed the train to Pwllheli pausing to drop passengers at Minffordd (for Port Merion -1 mile walk), Porthmadog and Pwllheli. On the return the train was doubled headed and is reported to have breasted Talerddig Summit with ease with 97304 leading!

Earlier in the day the train had been hauled by royal liveried 67005 Queen's Messenger which carried a wreath in remembrance of Her Majesty. NR still cannot get its act together at Shrewsbury as yet again passengers had to get off while the loco change was done in Coton Hill yard! The train stopped briefly at the centre of the Barmouth viaduct on the return to allow a minute's silence for Her Majesty.

The Snowdonia Statesman ran from High Wycombe to Blaenau Ffestiniog on 14/9/22 headed by 47614 (rail blue livery) and 47828 (IC livery). The pair ran round at Llandudno Junction with 47828 leading up the Conwy Valley. NR has allowed the headshunt at Blaenau to become overgrown and it appears to be NIRU. This required 47828 to be uncoupled and 47614 to propel the rake back and draw the rake forwards into the siding. Later 47828 moved to the other end of the rake to haul the return journey to Llandudno Junction top and tailed. It seems NR's failure to properly maintain Blaenau Ffestiniog headshunt requires the expense of two locos on excursions now which might explain why fewer excursions have been seen in Blaenau in recent years. The passengers apparently joined a special FR working to Tan-y-bwlch and return.

The excursion clashed with the Penmaenmawr-Tuebrook stone train which was hauled by 66715. Photographers should watch out for the inbound working 6D60 (due to arrive Penmaenmawr 07:29) as this working was an STP on 14/9/22, the normal (sometimes) weekly train being WSSuX.

The Queen's Funeral Bank Holiday caught your webmaster out as the Glan Conwy Yard-Wellingborough slate waste flow operated on 19/9/22. This is another weekly flow that photographers should check the inbound workings for before venturing out to catch this irregular working. 4Z58 arrived over an hour late from Wellingborough at 14:55. Class 66 No.66758 The Paviour was in charge. It departed for Bescot at 19:59, presumably unable to make the full journey to Wellingborough within the driver's hours.

WHR AGM (non) event 16-18/9/22

With the WHR having had the WHR100 event earlier in the year the WHR AGM weekend event was anticipated to be a quiet affair by management. Having characterised it as a 'small event' with few attractions the number turning up proved to be very low and Dinas appeared deserted at times. The first disappointment came when WHRS members arrived to find that the Baldwin was not present. It was said to have had a bogie failure. Instead, Lyd and Prince topped and tailed semi-open coach No.2022 up and down the North Yard from the bay platform when there were requests. No.143 was out on the inaugural special and there were sufficient members to almost half fill the train. This passed No.130 on The Harbourmaster in Dinas, having come up from Caernarfon. Pictures were taken at Rhyd Ddu of the staff and volunteers who had helped with the £500,000 estimated cost of restoring the loco to service. No.143 carried a wreath to commemorate Her Majesty.

Sunday was to have had a special run of Lyd on The Cwellyn but members were advised that Prince would do the job. Those waiting along the line to join the train at intermediate stations or photo the working had a second disappointment though when the train failed to turn up! Apparently booking had been very low and management had decided to cancel the train.

In fact, it is reported that the greatest interest came on Monday when WHRS members who stayed on found Vale of Ffestiniog and Prince taking the D set back to Boston Lodge. The Funkey came back to Dinas with Criccieth Castle later in the day. Lyd had returned to Porthmadog by Wednesday.

F&WHR 8/9/22

Thursday was a quiet cloudy day at Porthmadog with a few sunny periods and occasional showers. There were FIVE trains from Porthmadog  (two each of the Woodland Wanderer /Mountain Spirit and one afternoon Glaslyn Venturer whereas there was just ONE from Caernarfon, the Gelert Explorer). On Friday, for the first time in a long while, there will be no trains on the WHR!

Merddin Emrys hauled the Mountain Spirit and Blanche the Woodland Wanderer followed by No.130 in the afternoon on the Glaslyn Venturer.

No.143 progress 8/9/22

No.143 completed its steam test on 8/9/22 and, after some test runs, will haul a special on 17/9/22 during the WHR Soc. Small Event weekend. The loco has been turned out in lined green. This one was the last UK built example of the NG G16 Class of Garratts.

Mainline news 1-9/9/22

The North Wales Coast continues to see freight action and driver training movements.

1/9/22 saw ROG's 37901 which may be on route learning for delivery of the ex Grand Central Mk4 coaches allocated to the CF/HD service. This loco once visited the Llangollen Railway Diesel Gala whilst in preservation (7/10/07) wearing Railfreight livery. Next year the LR may have a visiting loco and a Class 24/25 would be most appropriate for the Ruabon-Barmouth route. On the same day 68002/16 worked the path retention trip to Valley Nuclear Electric siding. While the reactor was de-fuelled a few years ago, in the future some components of the reactor will be cut up small enough to be dispatched in flasks. Chiltern livery 67012 and DB liveried 67015 were in the Holyhead-Cardiff turns.

2/9/22 saw 37901 return from Holyhead to Crewe while 66769 League Managers' Association hauled the Penmaenmawr-Tuebrook stone working, a working dominated by Class 60 until recently. The day saw two freight workings with 66777 Annette on the Glan Conwy yard-Wellingborough slate waste train. This train is still operating as an STP 'Z' path.

On the question of paths, the mysterious 4A26 Holyhead Anglesey Aluminium-Wembley has reappeared. This RfD Channel Tunnel 'Q' path runs 15/8/22-9/12/22 at 16:10 but does not yet appear to have been used. The ex-Anglesey Aluminium sidings at Holyhead appear to be OOU. The traffic for this flow is as yet unidentified.

5/7/22 saw the Glan Conwy-Wellingborough slate waste train operating as 4Z58, this time on a Monday (last week it was on Friday), with 66777 again. This train works forward the next day to Luton.

The 9/7/22 has a rare excursion over Barmouth Bridge with the Cardiff -Pwllheli worked by a Class 97 from Shrewsbury. The service arrives at Pwllheli at 14:31 and returns at 16:23. The Barmouth Viaduct and the Cambrian Coast line north of Dovey Junction will be closed for repairs to the viaduct from 11/9/22 (see below).

Barmouth Viaduct closure 11/9/22

NR has released updated information about the rebuilding of Barmouth Bridge this Autumn. Although all work including replacing steelwork of the main spans was set to be completed this Autumn work will be now be divided between this Autumn and a final season in Autumn 2023. This will allow a break over half term when the Cambrian Coast Line can be busy with holidaymakers. The closure dates are now 11/9/22-15/10/22 then a four week break and further closure 13/11/22-9/12/22. Additional work this season includes strengthening the northern abutment and more timber replacement. See NR website for full details.

F&WHR 7/9/22

Today was a day of storms and intermittent sunshine at Porthmadog. There were SIX trains from Porthmadog (two each of the Woodland Wanderer, Mountain Spirit and Glaslyn Venturer and just ONE from Caernarfon, the Gelert Explorer). The timetable contained an unusual variation today with The Harbourmaster and Gelert Explorer running on the WHR.

The locos in use today were No.130 on The Harbourmaster, David Lloyd George on the Mountain Spirit and Blanche on the Woodland Wanderer.

At 11:15 Moelwyn turned up light engine in the yard after crossing The Cob. The loco was to spend some hours shunting the yard. The seawall siding was shunted at 11:38 and at 11:47 two coal wagons were shunted to the coaling stage. The loco was back a few minutes later and a third loaded coal wagon was shunted from the seawall to the coaling stage, returning with both a full and empty wagon shortly afterwards. The empty wagon was left in the seawall siding and the process repeated. At 13:37 the diesel moved to the coaling stage one last time before departing light engine at 14:22 for the depot.

F&WHR 6/9/22

The weather has seen a repeating pattern of windy wet nights and sunny warm days at Porthmadog over the last three days. There were SIX trains from Porthmadog  (two each of the Woodland Wanderer, Mountain Spirit and Glaslyn Venturer and just ONE from Caernarfon, the Gelert Explorer).

At Boston Lodge Baldwin No.608 was used to shunt David Lloyd George this morning After testing, the loco will go to Dinas for the first time in preparation for the small event over the WHR Society AGM weekend. The Baldwin then appeared in Harbour station light engine just before the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer departed. The loco then departed light engine for Boston Lodge. Merddin Emrys returned with the Mountain Spirit at 13:38 and No.130 departed with the Glaslyn Venturer a few minutes later. Blanche, now repaired, arrived back with the Woodland Wanderer at 16:13 in a thunderstorm.

Margaret leaves Devil's Bridge 5/9/22

Margaret, the VoR's Quarry Hunslet that normally outstables on the disconnected siding at Devil's Bridge, has been returned to Aberystwyth for annual maintenance. The loco is used for cab rides on days when there are services. The track was briefly reconnected on 5/9/22 and the loco ran light engine to Aberystwyth shed.

Timetable w/c 5/9/22

With the end of the Summer timetable on 2/9/22 the F&WHR has reduced its train services for the Autumn 'shoulder' traffic. The FR continues as normal (but with reduced numbers of trains according to traffic) but WHR services have been drastically curtailed. The Cwellyn service has been cancelled though it loaded very well. The Glaslyn Venturer has been cut back to operate WFSX. The Gelert Explorer remains FSX. This means there are no Friday services on the WHR as The Harbourmaster will be WSO and the Snowdonia Star SO.

Llangollen Railway Diesel Gala 4/9/22

The Llangollen Railway timetable came out a bit late as coaching stock was an issue. Eventually 4 of the Trust's remaining several Mk1 coaches were made available, a maroon BK, a chocolate and cream TSO, a chocolate and cream CK and a blood and custard CK. Unfortunately none of the toilets in these coaches was available for use. As expected the Class 47 stuck with the Mk1s while 26010 was on the suburban coach rake and 31271 on the mixed train, which consisted of the Sunshine coach and four loaded ballast wagons top and tailed with two sharks. Black liveried 08195 was active in the station carrying a L learner sticker:-)

Trains generally ran to time and the westbound platform at Carrog was in use. The railway was reported to be very happy with numbers attending despite there being no visiting locos. Next year's Diesel Gala has already been set for 16-17/9/23 (the same weekend as the WHRS AGM/SuperPower?). It would be a good idea to invite a Class 24/25 loco next year which is a more prototypically correct loco for the Ruabon-Barmouth route.

The final scheduled 2022 diesel-loco running days are with 26010 (as 5310) on Saturday 10/9/22 and Class 31 No 31271 on Sunday 11/9/22. Steam then makes a return for the following 3 weekends. 0-6-0 Saddle tank No.60867 will be in steam on 16-18/9/22, 24-25/9/22 and then 1-2/10/22. Railcars will be at work on 7-9/9/22, 14- 15/9/22, 21-23/9/22, 28-30/9/22 and 5-7/10/22. The Heritage Railcar Weekend then takes place on 8-9/10/22, which showcases the varied Llangollen railcars fleet that have provided the backbone of this year's services. Years ago these used to be stored in the siding by the signal box at Glyndyfrdwy but are now stored more securely at Pentrefelin Carriage Sidings.

F&WHR 3/9/22

The weather broke on 2/9/22 after a week long hot dry sunny spell at Porthmadog and the forecast looked like showery cool weather for the final weekend of the school summer holidays. The Summer peak timetable has now finished and with it the Cwellyn service on the WHR (except for the WHR society AGM Saturday 17/9/22).

Today's trains were hauled by No.130, David Lloyd George on the Mountain Spirit and Merddin Emrys on the Woodland Wanderer.

Welsh Pony arrived on a 2 coach special in the WHR platform at 15:42, ran round at 15:50 and departed for the depot at 16:13. No.130 was next back with the Glaslyn Venturer at 16:40, departing ECS at 16:46.

Llangollen Railway Diesel Gala 3-4/9/22

Or the weekend of 3-4/9/22 the Llangollen Railway is having its first Diesel Gala since the railway reopened under new management. This will be the first time since 2019 that the railway has managed to operate a three train service, an achievement considering the sell off of the PLC's Mk1 rolling stock by the liquidator. The A set is Mk1 stock, the B set the suburban coaches and the V set a ballast train with limited passenger accommodation. All three main line locos, the Class 26, 31 and 47, will be in use as well as 08195 on 'Driver for a Fiver' duties in Llangollen Station. The popular Berwyn Shuttle that operated in the resurrected railway's recent history will not run. The Class 47 is on the Mark 1 set and the 26 No.26010 on the suburban set that ran earlier in the season. There are 7 trains on both days with locos sticking to their set. The Class 31 No. 31271 will be on the mixed ballast train with the Sunshine Coach.

See Unofficial Llangollen Railway Facebook page for timetable.

Vale of Rheidol Garratt No.60 1/9/22

The VoR Garratt No.60 Drakensberg was in action on 1/9/22 and its final services were booked to be over the weekend on 3-4/9/22. At some stage in the future maybe this loco will visit the WHR?

F&WHR 1/9/22

Moelwyn piloted Palmerston on the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer on 1/9/22. Palmerston has a lower power rating than the other two England locos as it retains it original boiler design and cannot handle full length Woodland Wanderer trains.

Railtour update

The Blue Pullman is coming to North Wales on 2/7/22. The train starts from Perth and calls at several Scottish stations on its way to Llandudno. what is surprising is the dearth of other Saphos Tours to North Wales. Vintage Trains cancelled its Cambrian Coast Explorer 2 to Aberystwyth on the same day. It is a long while now since Aberystwyth had an excursion. Perhaps the local councillors should have been more vocal in opposing NR's ERTMS signalling scheme which limits traction to the yellow Class 97 (aka Class 37) as no portable unit has ever been provided that could be fitted to visiting steam or diesel traction.

RTC are running a North Wales Coast Express 17/7/22 from Liverpool using WCR's Carnforth steam loco pool. Their tour of the Cambrian on 12/8/22 has been postponed until early September (TBA) before the Barmouth bridge steelwork is removed and replaced in Phase 2 of the upgrade works. This interesting tour from Cardiff goes out via Hereford and returns via the Central Wales Line.

The other RTC tour Oxford-Pwllheli scheduled for 9/9/22 (just before the Barmouth Bridge closure) has been postponed until 2023 and presumably the Cardiff-Pwllheli tour is taking its slot. RTC has been in difficulties recently as a tour from Ealing to Buxton calling at Kettering was postponed for 2 years and then drew many complaints as passengers were unable to see the steam loco hauling the train, Bahamas, close up at any point in the journey!!

On 3/9/22 Vintage Trains are running a North Wales Coast Express from Tyseley to Blaenau Ffestiniog with 7029 Clun Castle to Chester via Crewe and return but 47773 from there to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

On 14/9/22 the Snowdonia Statesman runs from High Wycombe to Blaenau Ffestiniog with a pair of LSL Class 47s (presumably top and tailing).

The Staycation Express has been withdrawn from the Settle and Carlisle line after the use of an HST rather than classic diesels was found to attract low ridership. The company says it might relaunch next year and try the Central Wales Line from Shrewsbury to Swansea. The central section of this line is particularly picturesque between Knucklas Viaduct and Llandovery over the Cambrian Mountains with two tunnels and several viaducts and pathing is no problem as the regular service is very sparse.

Webmaster's Holiday

Your webmaster is going on holiday to Porthmadog for a few weeks from 30/8/22. The website may be updated in that time depending on the quality of the connection in the area but the number of updates and images may be limited as a laptop is being used. Normal service will be resumed towards the end of September.

F&WHR 29/8/22

Monday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods and light cloud at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 21C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was shown as sold out.

No.130 was first  arriving at 09:20 with the ECS for the 10:15 Glaslyn Venturer. It's been quite some time since No.87 was based at Boston Lodge. Earl of Merioneth arrived with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit at 09:56. The loco ran round at 10:06 and the Garratt departed on time. Merddin Emrys arrived at 10:21 into the WHR platform with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer but waited for the Mountain Spirit to depart first before running round at 10:38 and departing on time. The ECS for the 11:55 arrived at 11:14 double headed by Palmerston and Welsh Pony. This pair ran round each other so that Palmerston was on the front to Tan-y-bwlch at 11:40 and they departed on time.

At lunchtime No.130 returned at 12:55 and detached and ran to the yard to water 3 minutes later. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 13:13 into the FR platform allowing the Garratt to complete its run round at 13:15. At 13:24 the Woodland Wanderer was shunted to the yard to clear the FR platform for the Mountain Spirit's return at 13:41 simultaneously with the Garratt departure. At 13:46 Merddin Emrys shunted the rake over to the WHR platform and departed on time at 13:55. Meanwhile David Lloyd George ran round at 14:04 and Welsh Pony piloted Palmerston, arrived back at 14:17 into the WHR platform. The England pair ran to the yard to coal and water at 14:25 and the Fairlie departed on time 5 minutes later. The Englands also departed on time.

Trains began to return in the last afternoon. First back was Merddin Emrys at 16:11. Run round came at 16:19 and the ECS left at 16:23. No.130 was next at 16:21 and left ECS at 16:32. The two England engines arrive at 17:03 into the WHR platform. Run round came at 17:05 and the ECS departed at 17:09. David Lloyd George returned at 17:37 into the FR platform and ran round at 17:52. The ECS departed at 17:55 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 28/8/22

Sunday was forecast to be a bright cloudy day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 21C. SIX trains were planned from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). This may be a miscalculation on a Bank Holiday weekend as both Woodland Wanderer trains and the 14:30 Mountain Spirit were sold out by 10:30 (and presumably the 10:30). Passengers could always be redirected to book on the Glaslyn Venturer as the afternoon train still had space.

No.130 arrived at 09:22 in the WHR platform with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George was next, hauling the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform at 09:52 and running round at 10:07. The Garratt departed a few minutes late. The final morning working arrived over half an hour late at 10:54, hauled by Merddin Emrys. The ECS Woodland Wanderer was unusually directed into the FR platform as the platform was now clear, the Mountain Spirit having departed on time at 10:30. the loco ran round at 11:00 and departed 10 minutes late at 11:05 with an unusually large number of people watching from the platform for some reason as no more trains were due for at least 2 hours!

At lunchtime, No.130 arrived back at 12:56. The loco detached and ran to the yard to water a few minutes later. Vale of Ffestiniog arrived into the WHR loop at 13:05 and departed  for the WHR at 13:08 with two ballast wagons and a mess coach. Meanwhile the Garratt waited in the yard for the Woodland Wanderer to return at 13:17 before completing its run round at 13:22. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 13:17 and shunted its rake to the yard at 13:25. David Lloyd George arrived in the FR platform at 13:39 and Merddin Emrys shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 14:01. The 13:55 departed at 14:04, almost 10 minutes late for the second time today. David Lloyd George ran round at 14:10 and departed on time from the FR platform.

At the end of the afternoon the three trains returned. Merddin Emrys was first at 16:18 into the FR platform followed by No.130 arriving at 16:22 into the WHR platform. The Garratt left with the ECS at 16:31 and the Fairlie ran round at 16:39 before departing ECS at 16:45. David Lloyd George arrived at 17:41 with the returning Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 17:53 and departed with the ECS at 17:59 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 27/8/22

Saturday 27/8/22 was forecast to be a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog but improving later with a maximum temperatures of 22C. The F&WHR has not expanded services for the Bank Holiday weekend even though holidaymakers may have a final summer break. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) and FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and the Harbourmaster train). The first Woodland Wanderer was shown as sold out.

Upnor Castle brought the ECS Harbourmaster into the WHR platform at 08:41 as the Garratt was still being prepared. The loco detached, ran round and left for the depot at 08:47. No.130 arrived, ran through the WHR loop line and coupled up at 09:24. David Lloyd George arrived ay 09:57 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. run round came at 10:11. At 10:14 Merddin Emrys arrived with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform so the Fairlies swopped duties today. Although Merddin Emrys was in the WHR loop ready to run round at 10:20 this had to wait until after the Mountain Spirit had departed at 10:30. Run round was completed at 10:37 and the train departed on time at 10:55.

Lunchtime activities were as expected with No.87 arriving first with the Snowdonia Star at 12:14. the loco ran to the yard to water at 12:20 and ran round at 12:42 for an on time departure. Merddin Emrys arrived at 14:10 and 8 minutes later shunted its rake to the yard to clear the platform for the Mountain Spirit. This was followed by the return of David Lloyd George at 13:39. At 13:47 the Woodland Wanderer was shunted into the east end of the FR platform ready for an on time 13:55 departure. At 14:06 the Fairlie ran round and later departed on time.

At 15:21 Moelwyn came over to retrieve the Alco which had been dragged over The Cob by human power in a fund raising effort to restore the loco before the day's services began. At 16:13 Moelwyn took the Alco back across The Cob after extracting the loco from the seawall siding. The 'haulage' took place early in the day before traffic with the prospect of breakfast at Spooners as an incentive! Mountaineer spent the day at Porthmadog, partly stabled in the seawall siding as an attraction. The time was 19 minutes 34 seconds which works out approximately at a very creditable 3 mph with 20 hp available - i.e. human power:-) See Facebook Festrail insider website for more images.

At the end of the afternoon the three service trains returned. Merddin Emrys was first at 16:11. The loco ran round at 16:25 and departed with the ECS at 16:29. The Garratt rolled in from the WHR at 16:33 and proceeded ECS to the depot 10 minutes later. The last train of the day was hauled in to the FR platform at 17:36. David Lloyd George ran round at 17:54 and departed with the ECS at 17:58 to close the day's activities.

Electric Traction 26/8/22

A Wickham Trolley arrived on the FR in 1962 and has recently been given a new lease of life. Having been used by the track gangs for several years, the Wickham was put into store at Glan-y-Pwll around 1973. Starting in the late 1990s, it has been restored in stages by volunteers, at different times and locations, returning to the FR in 2010. The latest work has seen it converted to run off batteries, rather than petrol as originally built. These batteries can, of course, be charged from the electricity created by the large solar panel array that has been installed on the roof of the new Carriage Shed at Boston Lodge.

Main Line news

North Wales Coast train users have been annoyed to learn that Avanti has stopped all direct services to London from Holyhead due to the current industrial relations problems and overtime ban that the Tories are refusing to discuss with unions. People will have to change at Crewe to get to London and hope there is a connection. This also brings into focus the wider issue of HS2 which has no plan for any trains to Holyhead so in future all passengers from North Wales will have to change at Crewe to get a fast train to London via HS2. Maybe it is time for TfW to apply for a license to operate its 125mph Class 67/Mk4 fleet on the WCML instead of allocating all the recently purchased extra vehicles on the Swansea-Manchester route which many see as a very South Wales-centric view of rail traffic. Another option is to hire in an LSL rake and traction or a WCR rake and traction given they have drivers who sign for the route. See Daily Post story.

In recent weeks a freight path has been identified to Anglesey Rail Freight Terminal (the former Anglesey Aluminium Sidings site) but it has disappeared again. If a traffic does finally appear, it will be the third freight operation on the North Wales Coast line and the fourth in North/Mid Wales taking into account the recently confirmed contract from Chronospan Chirk for the Aberystwyth log train.

Class 66 No.66723 ZA723 Chinook hauled the second run of the Glan Conwy yard to Wellingborough slate waste train on Wednesday 10/8/22 reversing out onto the main line at Llandudno Junction. The first ran on 3/8 and the diagram seems to be settling into WO operation.

The SO 09:51 5K67 Holyhead Car M.D.- Crewe CS loco hauled continues to run as an ECS when Saturday is crying out for a crowd busting train such as this, especially with the withdrawal of Avanti through trains to London. The SO afternoon return ECS working 5D68, the 14:10 Crewe CS-Holyhead Car M.D. is also a candidate for conversion from ECS to a public service.

F&WHR 26/8/22

Friday 26/8/22 was forecast to be a day of showers at Porthmadog but improving later with a maximum temperatures of 18C. The F&WHR has reduced services for Friday believing it to be a day that holidaymakers travel home. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) and FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and the Harbourmaster train). The first Woodland Wanderer was shown as sold out.

First train today was No.130 with the ECS for The Harbourmaster arriving very early at 08:51 and departing on time at 09:40. The second train was Merddin Emrys taking a turn on the ECS Mountain Spirit having run in on the Woodland Wanderer in recent days. The train arrived at 10:01 and the Fairlie ran round at 10:08 as the ECS Woodland Wanderer approached. David Lloyd George pulled into the WHR platform at 10:18 and ran round at 10:22, completing the move before the other Fairlie departed at 10:30. At 10:53 Upnor Castle came across The Cob and arrived in the yard with a water tank wagon allowing Merddin Emrys to depart on time as soon as The Cob section was clear.

No.87 arrived with the Snowdonia Star at 12:14. The loco detached and ran to Boston Lodge to coal and water at 12:17 returning and running round at 12:55. David Lloyd George arrived back at 13:12 into the FR platform. The rake was shunted to the yard at 13:18 to clear the platform for the Mountain Spirit to arrive. Merddin Emrys arrived back into the FR platform at 13:39 while the other Fairlie made immediate preparations to run round the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer and shunt it over to the far end of the FR platform. The train left on time. At 14:14 Upnor Castle emerged from the yard and propelled the tank wagon back to Boston Lodge after David Lloyd George had run round at 14:09. Both the Snowdonia Star and Mountain Spirit left on time.

At the end of the afternoon the three trains started returning. First back was David Lloyd George with the Woodland Wanderer. This arrived at 16:13, ran round at 16:25 and departed ECS at 16:28. Next came the Garratt arriving at 16:33 and departing ECS at 16:39. The final working of the day was the return of the Mountain Spirit with Merddin Emrys arriving back at 17:38 into the FR platform, running round at 17:47 and departing ECS at 17:51 to close the day's activities.

Russell weekend 30-31/7/22

Your webmaster was present at the Russell Weekend  but the images have yet to appear on the website because of a bout of COVID (after successfully avoiding it for 2 years!) and its long after-effects caught from someone at Dinas. The new page will feature these images as time allows. See Russell Weekend page.

WHR AGM weekend 16-18/9/22

While there is no SuperPower this year a small event will occur over the weekend of 16-18/9/22 with the WHR Society AGM on Saturday 17/9/22.

As well as the normal FSO Snowdonia Star and The Harbourmaster through WHR trains there will be additional events.

On Friday evening 16/9/22 at 20:00 - 22:00 - Stephen Fearing Concert at Caernarfon Station

Members are invited to the AGM weekend as it starts by welcoming ‘JUNO’ award winning Irish/Canadian singer, songwriter and guitarist Stephen Fearing to ‘Y Stesion’ in Caernarfon. The concert is part of a renewed effort to make better use of the station’s facilities and its ability to host external events. Stephen Fearing is an alluring entertainer – heart-breaking, expansive, and full of mirth – with a clear, honourable voice that lifts you out into his wide world and “brings you back home to yourself.” He says, “Getting on stage is the fun part, especially when the adrenaline kicks in. People want to escape and be taken on a journey. I build my shows so they do just that.”

Doors will open at 19:00 and the concert will start at 20:00. The bar will be open with drinks and snacks available.

Ticket prices: £14.00 (£14.84 inc. fee) in advance or £16.00 on the door.

For more information and to book your tickets, click here: https://www.festrail.co.uk/stephen-fearing/.

On Saturday 17/9/22  10:00 - 16:00 - Take a look around Dinas Yard / Baldwin No.608 Shuttle Rides

The Society will be welcoming members to Dinas station during the day, where there will be opportunities to have a look at the NG15, admire the 16mm live steam model railway, chat to the NG15 team about progress and future plans, enjoy a cuppa at the café and buy some merchandise at the pop-up shop.

The WHR Society is delighted that Baldwin No.608, a privately owned locomotive, is spending some time here with us at the F&WHR courtesy of Graham Fairhurst. the loco must work up from Boston Lodge beforehand where it is based and recently repaired. It was built for use by the War Department in the First World War but spent most of its working life in India. A sister locomotive, No. 590, was used on the Welsh Highland Railway in the 1930’s but sadly did not survive except for a few parts at the WHHR. No.608 was rescued and returned to the UK ten years ago and has been the subject of a lengthy overhaul. Now at the commissioning and testing stage, it is hoped to see more of this loco as the F&WHR celebrate 100 years of the Welsh Highland Railway next year.

Members will be able to ride on short shuttle trains behind No.608 in Dinas, top & tailed by Lyd, and perhaps there will be opportunities for Footplate Rides too.

11:40 - 14:45 - Ride on the ‘Special Welcome back No.143 Train’ from Caernarfon - Rhyd Ddu and back

On Saturday, the group of volunteers who have worked to get No.143 back into traffic would like to invite members to join them on a special train from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu. This has been a huge effort which has seen many different volunteers lending a hand in the workshop at Dinas on a regular basic to get the job done despite all the difficulties of COVID.

The train will stop at Waunfawr station on the return journey, providing an opportunity for a short break at Snowdonia Parc Brewpub.

Caffi De Winton will be happy to sell visitors something to take on the train and there will be coffee and cold drinks at Waunfawr station.

17:30 onwards - Saturday Evening AGM at Caernarfon Station

On Saturday evening, the AGM will take place at Caernarfon Station, with a hot supper on offer to those attending, available between 17:30 and 18:30.

Pre-book your choice of main/dessert here: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/festrail/items/326305/availability/956385691/book/?full-items=yes

Sunday 18/9/22

10:00 - 16:00 - Take a look around Dinas Yard / Baldwin No.608 Shuttle Rides at Dinas (Lyd will not be available to top and tail in the afternoon)

10:15 - 13:00 - Glaslyn Venturer - Porthmadog to Beddgelert and return

It is possible to make a single journey from Porthmadog to Caernarfon changing at Beddgelert on the Sunday.

11:30 - 16:00 - Gelert Explorer - Caernarfon to Beddgelert and return (it should be possible to get off this and return via the Cwellyn e.g. at Rhyd Ddu)

12:30 - 15:00 - The Cwellyn – Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu and return

The Cwellyn service has been operating mid-week during the school holidays, in part as a suggestion by the WHRS Board and society members (not least your webmaster!). It has proved very popular – so here is a taste for members. This train will cease operation on Thursday 1/9/22 with the end of the Summer timetable but it appears Lyd may remain at Dinas specifically for this event.

Garratt Nos.138/143 update 26/8/22

Both Beyer Garratt locomotives Nos.138/143 are stalwarts of the WHR fleet, having been in traffic almost continuously since the early years of the WHR redevelopment. However, both locomotives dropped out of traffic during the COVID lockdown and work started on the overhaul of the power units from No.138 which were very heavily worn. The left cylinder on the hind unit also had to be replaced as it had cracked and was beyond further use. No.138 was due to be the first in for overhaul but changing circumstances meant a change of plan.

A spare boiler was donated to the railway by the Puffing Billy Railway in Australia, and the F&WHR was immensely grateful to Mike Schumann for covering the costs of repatriating this boiler. The boiler, which had previously seen service on No.129 was overhauled at Locomotive Maintenance Services in Loughborough. No.143 will now be returned to traffic using the ex-Puffing Billy Railway boiler previously earmarked for No.138, meaning the boiler removed from No.143 in 2011 will now go to No.138 when that loco is eventually overhauled.

Nos.87/130 are currently in service in place of Nos.138/143 and once again we thank the sponsors that have made those locomotives available for traffic. Mindful that the railway requires three NGG16s to be available to cover the traffic on the WHR as well as effectively allowing for outages whilst covering the necessary maintenance routines, it was decided to use the newly overhauled power units from No.138 under No.143 as this gave the quickest route to seeing a fully overhauled locomotive with a ‘new’ boiler in traffic.

The power units from No.143 are currently beneath No.138 but not plumbed leaving them available as serviceable spares should they be needed. They will be overhauled commencing next year. The other spare boiler is currently with Israel Newton and should return for fitting to No.138 in 2023.

Returning to No.143 it passed a boiler hydraulic test on the 17/8/22 and thanks to the immense efforts of WHR Society volunteers and staff alike the F&WHR are looking forward to welcoming the last Garratt built in the UK back into service fleet this autumn and potentially having four Garratts in service in a few years time!

F&WHR 25/8/22

Thursday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 19C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Venturer trains) while there were TWO from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first Woodland Wanderer was fully booked by 10:00 as was the first Mountain Spirit train as many local campsites were fully booked for the week with Bank Holiday Monday approaching on 29/8/22.

No.130 arrived at 09:40 in the WHR platform. David Lloyd George arrived at 10:02 with the Mountain Spirit in the FR platform with run round coming at 10:12. Blanche was held at station limits until the Garratt had departed so the Woodland Wanderer could berth in the WHR platform at 10:19. Run round followed at 10:25 before the Fairlie departed. Merddin Emrys arrived into the FR platform at 11:20 with the last of the morning trains, the ECS for the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 11:32 and departed on time.

The lunchtime rush saw No.130 return at 12:50 and detached to water at 13:05. At 13:20 Blanche shunted its rake into the yard to clear the FR platform for the next arrival. David Lloyd George arrived at 13:38 into the FR platform. blanche completed its run round in the yard at 13:40 as the Garratt departed. It then propelled its rake to the WHR platform, arriving at 13:47 for the 13:55 departure. David Lloyd George ran round at 14:12 and Merddin Emrys arrived in the WHR platform at 14:17, starting its light engine move to the yard at 14:23 but unusually had to wait until the 14:30 had departed. Merddin Emrys eventually ran round at 15:04 and departed 13 minutes late at 15:08.

At the end of the afternoon trains returned to Porthmadog with No.130 first at 16:20. This did not leave ECS until 16:55 begging the question as to where Blanche was. The answer came at 1721 when Upnor Castle arrived in the FR platform dragging Blanche and its rake. The diesel ran round at 17:28 and departed with the ECS at 17:31 with Blanche still attached to the rear. Blanche has arrived back over an hour late and had caused the two following trains to be late as well.

This easterly view (25/8/22) shows Upnor Castle dragging in Blanche on the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer delayed by an hour by an incident up the line. Merddin Emrys arrived in the WHR platform at 17:54, some 44 minutes late due to Blanche's earlier problems. the loco ran to the yard to refuel/water before returning too the train at 18:05. The ECS had to await the arrival of David Lloyd George with the Mountain Spirit at 18:28, some 53 minutes late. the Fairlie ran round at 18:40 and departed with the ECS to close the day at 18:44.

As regards the earlier problem, Blanche had arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 14:30 on time and shunted its train to the westbound platform at 14:43 after running round to allow the Mountain Spirit to pass by at 15:15. Blanche departed there at 15:47 with the returning Woodland Wanderer after Merddin Emrys arrived with the 14:55. The problem must have been in the woods as Upnor Castle and Blanche did not pass Minffordd until 17:12 and is reputed to be because of a dropped fusible plug near Plas Halt on the return journey. It seems likely Blanche will not be available for a while!

Beddgelert lever frame 25/8/22

Work was underway today on the lever frame for Beddgelert Siding. The siding rodding and levers have remained in a dormant state for several years for some reason and access to the siding had depended on a padlock and screw as at Pen-y-Mount. Hopefully the work will rapidly progress to completion making this siding much more useful, especially for Gala events. Given the new 'Frontier' status of Beddgelert station in current F&WHR management forward planning, the siding might be required more frequently. Maybe the Pen-y-Mount ground frame might eventually appear too, housed in the signalbox at Pen-y-Mount (formerly intended for Cae Pawb Crossing).

F&WHR 24/8/22

Wednesday was forecast to be a day of light cloud at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 17C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Venturer trains) while there were TWO from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first three Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked by 10:00 as were both Mountain Spirit trains as many local campsites were fully booked for the week with Bank Holiday Monday approaching on 29/8/22.

First train of the day was hauled by No.130 which pulled into the WHR platform at 09:24 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George then arrived at 09:56 with the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. The Fairlie ran round at 10:09 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer arriving in the FR platform hauled by Blanche at 10:20 soon after the Garratt departed. Blanche ran round at 10:37 and departed on time after the Mountain Spirit departed, also on time. Merddin Emrys pulled into the FR platform at 10:21 with the ECS for 11:55 Woodland Wanderer. This ran round at 11:40 and departed on time.

Lunchtime activity began with the return of the Garratt at 12:56, running round at 13:00 and departing at 13:42. Blanche arrived at 13:14 and shunted the rake out of the FR platform at 13:20 to run round in the yard. At 13:44 the rake was shunted to the WHR platform. David Lloyd George arrived back into the FR platform as the Garratt departed and ran round at 14:14 as Criccieth Castle arrived in the WHR platform from the WHHR with brakevan No.51. With so much happening the freight was shunted into the seawall siding at 14:16 as the section ahead was occupied. Merddin Emrys arrived at 14:19 and the loco ran to the yard to coal and water at 14:22 while the other Fairlie departed on time at 14:30. This allowed the diesel to shunt out to the signal box at 14:34 and depart for Boston Lodge when the section was clear at 14:43 while Merddin Emrys was running round. The Woodland Wanderer departed 5 minutes late at 15:00.

This easterly view (24/8/22) shows Criccieth Castle apparently bringing the ex-VoR brakevan over from the WHHR. It is unclear if this a loan or a transfer of ownership. Trains started returning in the late afternoon. First back was Blanche at 16:16 into the FR platform, running round at 16:25 and departing with the ECS at 16:35. At 16:20 the Garratt arrived and departed with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer at 16:27 as no run round or watering was required. Merddin Emrys returned at 17:06 into the WHR platform and ran light engine to coal and water in the yard at 17:09. At 17:15 it completed the run round and departed with the ECS at 17:38 as soon as David Lloyd George cleared The Cob section with the returning Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie ran round at 17:55 and departed with the ECS at 18:00 to close the day.

Mountaineer returns to Boston Lodge 23/8/22

Alco loco Mountaineer left Glan-y-pwll and was taken to Boston Lodge on the evening of 23/6/22 by Upnor Castle. Images may be found on the Friends of F&WHR Facebook page. This is in preparation for the Grand Pull of the loco across The Cob on Saturday 27/8/22 to raise funds for the loco.

F&WHR 23/8/22

Tuesday was forecast to be a cloudy day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 18C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Venturer train) while there were TWO from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first two Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked by 10:00 as was the first Mountain Spirit.

No.130 arrived at 09:21 into the WHR with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer in rather damp conditions. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:50 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit which ran round at 10:05. Blanche arrived in the WHR platform at 10:26 with the ECS for the 10:55 after the Garratt had departed. Blanche had to wait for the Mountain Spirit to depart before completing the run round at 10:35. The final train of the morning was Merddin Emrys with the ECS for the 11:55 which arrived at 11:18 into the FR platform and ran round at 11:24, before departing on time.

No.130 was back at 12:59 and run round without going for water at 13:02. The weather had improved a little. Blanche arrived back at 13:15 and cleared the rake from the FR platform to the yard at 13:23. David Lloyd George arrived back at 13:41 and Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 13:46 after the Garratt departed. At 14:01 the Fairlie ran round after Blanche departed on time. Merddin Emrys pulled into the WHR platform at 14:17 and ran to coal and water at 14:20. Both Fairlies left on time.

At the end of the afternoon, Moelwyn came over with two loaded coal wagons for the fuelling point at 15:37. FR locos are running on coal but Garratts a mix of coal and ovoids loaded at Boston Lodge curve using the Loadall. A route was set for the diesel to return light to Boston Lodge but as it took some time to do the shunt, the route was cancelled at 15:41 with the Woodland Wanderer approaching. Blanche was back first at 16:11, allowing Moelwyn to leave light engine a minute later when The Cob section was clear. Blanche's run round was at 16:19 and it departed ECS at 16:32. The Garratt followed at 16:16 departing ECS at 16:23. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 17:13 with the 14:55 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform. At 17:18 the loco went to the yard to refuel and water before rejoining the rake at 17:35. David Lloyd George arrived back at 17:41 allowing Merddin Emrys to leave a minute later with the ECS of the Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 17:54 and departed ECS at 17:58 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 22/8/22

Monday was forecast to be a rainy day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 18C but improving a little in the afternoon. SEVEN trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and one Glaslyn Venturer train) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The first Mountain Spirit was fully booked by 10:00.

No.130 arrived with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer at 09:34. David Lloyd George was second into the FR platform at 10:00 with the ECS Mountain Spirit, running round at 10:09. Blanche ran into the WHR platform at 10:21 with the ECS Woodland Wanderer. This ran round at 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had left. Merddin Emrys arrived with the 11:55 ECS at 11:18, running round at 11:22 and departing on time.

The Garratt arrived back at 12:58 in the rain and was in the yard taking water as Blanche arrived back at 13:12. Instead of taking the ECS back to Boston Lodge the loco ran round for an extra Glaslyn Venturer which was not on the booking system in the morning! The rainy conditions must have increased the numbers booking beyond expectations. At 13:21 Blanche cleared the FR platform for the next arrival which was David Lloyd George at 13:41. Blanche then ran round in the yard and shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 13:53 in rather murky conditions that at least provided good condensation. The train left 7 minutes late at 14:02. At 14:07 the Fairlie ran round in the FR platform and left after the Woodland Wanderer returned. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 14:23 and ran round at 14:45 after refuelling and taking water. The train left at 15:00 some 5 minutes late.

At the end of the afternoon No.130 returned at 16:20 in better weather with the extra Glaslyn Venturer. The train left ECS at 16:29. Blanche pulled into the FR platform at 16:26 and ran round at 16:35 before departing ECS at 16:39. Merddin Emrys arrived at 17:06 with the returning Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform, running round at 17:18 and departing ECS at 17:20. The final train of the day was hauled by David Lloyd George arriving back at 17:47 into the FR platform. Run round came at 18:03 and the ECS left at 18:06 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 21/8/22

Sunday was forecast to be a day of light cloud at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 18C. FIVE trains were planned from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and one Glaslyn Venturer train) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The afternoon Mountain Spirit is normally SuX but ran today. The 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was fully booked by 10:00.

No.130 was first today arriving at 09:25 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. This was followed by David Lloyd George that arrived at 09:51 into the FR platform with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit, running round at 10:00. Finally, Merddin Emrys came over ECS and waited at the home signal for 5 minutes until the Garratt departed to leave the WHR platform clear. The Woodland Wanderer then ran into the WHR platform at 11:19 but run round came at 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had departed.

The Garratt returned at 12:55, departing ECS at 13:11 right after David Lloyd George arrived into the FR platform. The Fairlie ran round at 13:27. Merddin Emrys returned at 13:36 and ran round at 13:39. Both trains departed on time.

First back at the end of the afternoon was Merddin Emrys at 16:12, running round at 16.30 and departing ECS at 16:35. David Lloyd George arrived back at 17:35, ran round at 17:54 and departed with the ECS at 17:56 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 20/8/22

Saturday 20/8/22 was forecast to be a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 19C. The F&WHR has reduced services for Saturday. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) and FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and the Harbourmaster train). No trains were fully booked in the morning..

First up today was No.130 arriving at 09:12 with the ECS for The Harbourmaster. This left on time as the Mountain Spirit was being prepared at Boston Lodge. Another usual movement occurred at 10:00 when Welsh Pony piloted Blanche into the FR platform with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit. This train has been hauled by a Fairlie for the last several weeks. The pair ran round each other and at 10:07 ran round their train so that the England was on the front for the trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Merddin Emrys arrived at 10:18 in the WHR platform with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. Moelwyn arrived light engine at 11:24.

No.87 arrived at 12:07 with the Snowdonia Star. The loco detached and ran to refuel and water at 12:11 coming back and running round at 12:24. David Lloyd George arrived light engine at 12:55. Merddin Emrys returned at 13:10 and shunted its rake to the yard at 13:15 to clear the FR platform for the return of the Mountain Spirit which arrived, this time led by Blanche somewhat surprisingly. David Lloyd George took over the train for the 14:55 departure. Merddin Emrys ran round at the same time and then shunted its rake into the far end of the FR platform at 13:44, departing on time at 13:55. The pair that had doubled headed the morning run left light engine at 14:07.

At 16:11 Merddin Emrys was first back with the Woodland Wanderer. Run round came at 16:22 and the train departed ECS at 16:26. 16:41 No.130 rolled in with Upnor Castle standing waiting beyond the king point but then came into the yard. At 16:47 the Garratt detached and ran direct to Boston Lodge and the diesel hooked up to The Harbourmaster to take the ECS back to Boston Lodge at 17:18. David Lloyd George arrived at 17:35 with the Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie ran round at 17:49 and departed with the ECS at 17:56 but was pulled up sharply by the signalbox when some youths caused trouble by hanging on the train and waving at the webcam as it was leaving. There was an altercation with station staff before the train was able to leave safely at 17:59. Respect must be given to staff and volunteers who have to deal with what appeared to be drunken loutish behaviour at Porthmadog Station.

F&WHR 19/8/22

Friday 19/8/22 was forecast to be a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 18C. Unusually The Harbourmaster train was shown as Sold Out by 09:00, possibly a first.

No.130 was first today with The Harbourmaster at 09:15 followed by David Lloyd George at 10:02 arriving ECS in the FR platform. The Fairlie ran round at 10:15 and departed on time. A surprise was Merddin Emrys which arrived with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer at 10:24. Run round had to await the 4 minute late departure of the Woodland Wanderer and came at 10:39.

This easterly view (19/8/22) shows Merddin Emrys allocated to the Woodland Wanderer on its first passenger turn for well over a month. No.87 arrived in sunshine at 12:111 with the Snowdonia Star with the loco running to refuel and water at 12:!8. Merddin Emrys arrived back at 13:17 and shunted the rake to the yard at 13:25 to clear the FR platform for the returning Mountain Spirit which arrived at 13:43. The Garratt ran round at 13:35 ready for the 14:15 return journey. Merddin Emrys ran round at 13:50 and shunted its rake to the end of the FR platform for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. David Lloyd George ran round at 14:15 and at 14:19 Britomart was noted running into the yard with two coaches. At 14:42 Britomart ran round the short rake before departing at 14:57 towards Boston Lodge. The train consisted on new 'Super Barn' coach No.808 and brake van No.11. It would appear that the event was for Bob Bloodworth's family as the coach was built in memory of him. The train went to Tan-y-bwlch and there are images and video on Friends of the F&WHR Facebook page.

The Harbourmaster arrived back in the hands of No.130 at 6:41 and departed ECS at 16:53. This was followed by Merddin Emrys at 16:34, over 20 minutes late. possibly after some teething problems? The loco ran round at 16:49 and departed ECS at 17:09. Britomart arrived back at 17:35 with its two coach rake into the WHR platform in association with the coach No.808 event. The loco eventually propelled back up the platform to wait by the signalbox for the delayed return of David Lloyd George at 17:56 and departed 1 minute later. The Fairlie ran round at 18:18 and departed at 18:22 ECS to close the day's activities.

Festiniog Round Robin available again

Rail Express magazine reports of a journey that uses rail to make a clockwise circular journey from Llandudno Junction back to the same station utilising both NR and the FR. The Day Ranger ticket costs £26.40 (with Railcard) which is good value! The journey includes a substantial loco hauled mileage along the North Wales coast to Chester and then to Shrewsbury. Cross platform interchange is possible at Minffordd and Blaenau Ffestiniog. A small add on fare allows journeys from Liverpool, Manchester and Wolverhampton to join the circular journey, which can also be made anticlockwise. It seems possible a version involving the WHR (FSO) could be marketed with a short bus link from Caernarfon to Bangor? See TfW website for full details.

F&WHR 18/8/22

Thursday 18/8/22 was forecast to be a day of showers at Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 18C. The F&WHR continues to run the second rake on the Woodland Wanderer making four of these train services available. There were TWO trains from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn) and EIGHT from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Venturer trains). The first three Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked as was the first Mountain Spirit. With the wet weather the train won out over the beach today and the 14:30 Mountain Spirit was also fully booked.

No.130 arrived with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer at 09:40. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:53 into the FR platform with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit. this might be the last week that the Fairlie has to haul this service unsupported as Merddin Emrys might be released to traffic by the end of August after its firebox repairs. The Fairlie ran round at 10:01. Once the Garratt had departed Blanche arrived with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform at 10:20. Run round came at 10:36, shortly after the Mountain Spirit had departed. At 11:21 Welsh Pony and Palmerston appeared double headed with the ECS for the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer. Welsh Pony then went to collect the two spare coaches stabled in the seawall siding to add to the rake. Palmerston then ran round at 11:40 and became the pilot loco. The pair left at 11:59 with the damp air creating good condensation effects.

This westerly view (18/8/22) shows Palmerston piloting Welsh Pony on the strengthened 11:55 Woodland Wanderer passing Minffordd in very damp conditions. The Garratt was back at 12:57 and ran round at 13:02. Blanche was back at 13:23 in the FR platform and shunted the rake to the yard before running round at 13:48. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:51 while people cowered from the awful weather. The loco ran round at 14:26 and shunted to the WHR platform at 13:55 before departing at 14:09. The Fairlie ran round at 14:25 and departed after the double headed England pulled in at 14:32. The England engines then ran round at 14:38 and departed at 15:09, some 13 minutes late. At 14:48 Merddin Emrys turned up light in the WHR loop presumably on test after its recent reassembly.

This easterly view (18/8/22) shows Merddin Emrys presumably on a light engine test run to Pont Croesor and back after it recent reassembly. At 15:21 Merddin Emrys returned from a light engine test run up the WHR presumably to Pont Croesor and back in the half hour it took and disappeared into the murk returning to Boston Lodge at 15:30. The Garratt arrived back at 16:22 and was unusually already signalled to depart ECS as it arrived. Actual departure came at 16:28. Blanche arrived back at 16:47 into the WHR some 35 minutes late possibly after problems with wet rail in the woods. At 16:53 Blanche went to coal and water in the yard before returning and departing ECS at 17:03. the double headed England working pulled in at 17:29 with Palmerston still on the front. The pair ran round at 17:35 and Welsh Pony detached to couple onto the front for the ECS followed by Palmerston which again became pilot loco. The ECS departed at 17:44. The last train to return was the Fairlie which rolled into the FR platform at 18:06. Run round came at 18:10 and the ECS departed at 18:15 to close a day of varied locos.

F&WHR 17/8/22

Wednesday 17/8/22 was forecast to be a day of light cloud at Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 20C. Wednesday's first Woodland Wanderer and Mountain Spirit were sold out a day in advance and the Cwellyn was running. The 13:55 Woodland Wanderer was also sold out by 13:00.

The first surprise of the day was Upnor Castle bringing the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer over at 09:35. It is possible the Garratt was not quite ready as the diesel returned light engine to the depot at 09:40. David Lloyd George arrived into the FR platform at 10:00 and No.130 arrived light engine at 10:15. The Fairlie ran round at 10:16 as the Garratt departed a few minutes late at 10:19. Blanche arrived in the WHR platform at 10:24 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer. and ran round at 10:35 after the Fairlie had cleared The Cob shunt limit section. Welsh Pony arrived at 11:20 with the ECS for the 11:55 and steam was being raised at Boston Lodge for a mystery loco. Run round came at 11:32 and the train departed on time.

This easterly view (17/8/22) shows Upnor Castle with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer rake unusually diesel hauled. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is courtesy F&WHR and was captured from a web camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The Garratt arrived back at 13:08 and a minute later ran to the yard to refuel and water. Blanche arrived back at 13:16 and at 13:24 shunted its rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for the returning Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:42 as Blanche ran round in the yard and the Garratt departed. The rake was shunted over to the WHR platform at 13:54 and left a few minutes late. The Fairlie ran round at 14:11 and departed 5 minutes late at 14:35 after Welsh Pony arrived back at 14:19 into the WHR platform and ran to the yard at 14:25 to coal and water. Welsh Pony returned to its train at 14:46 and departed on time at 14:55 with the short 5 coach Woodland Wanderer rake.

At the end of the afternoon the train began to return in order. No.130 arrived at 16:21 with Blanche running into the FR platform at 16:23, ran round at 16:34 and departed with the ECS at 16:38. The Garratt left ECS at 16:50. Welsh Pony arrived in the WHR platform at 17:09 and ran round at 17:14 departing ECS by 17:28. The last train back was the Fairlie which departed ECS at around 18:00 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 16/8/22

Tuesday 16/8/22 was forecast to be a day of light cloud and maximum temperatures of 19C with  possibility of a thunderstorm. The first two Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked by 10:00. Wednesday's first Woodland Wanderer and Mountain Spirit were sold out a day in advance and the Cwellyn was running.

Today's first train was No.130 again arriving ECS in the WHR platform at 09:55. This was followed by David Lloyd George arriving at 10:08 in the FR platform with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit followed by run round at 10:18. Blanche turned up at 10:25 arriving with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. Run round came at 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had cleared the shunt limit. Welsh Pony was next arriving ECS in the FR platform with the short 5 coach 11:55 Woodland Wanderer at 11:17 and ran round at 11:22.

The Garratt was back at 13:02 and ran to the yard at 13:15 to refuel and water after blanche arrived at 13:!2. Blanche then shunted its rake to the yard before the Fairlie arrived in the FR platform at 13:39. Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 13:44 ready for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. the Fairlie ran round at 14:11 ready for the 14:30 Mountain Spirit. Welsh Pony arrived back at 14:18 into the WHR platform and ran to the yard light engine to refuel and water at 14:22. The loco returned to the train at 14:45 ready for the 14:55 Woodland Wanderer.

Loco progress 15/8/22

The F&WHR will be relieved to getting its second Fairlie back before the end of August. The loco has had attention to cracking of the firebox bottom corners near the foundation ring. New section of plate have been welded in and the welds checked with magnetic particles. The boiler has been hydraulically tested and the loco is coming back together in the next week or so. The tanks have been moved from the Heritage Shed and refitted to the loco as well as the power bogies. Work on James Spooner will resume as soon as Merddin Emrys is complete. Work on Castle Caernarfon will hopefully resume too and this loco will be back in traffic in September if all goes well  Linda is also been reassembled after attention to frame cracks and valves. With WHR 100 2023 (the opening throughout of the WHR) in prospect next year the F&WHR based Baldwin No.608 is nearing completion at Boston Lodge after its failure back in November 2019. This loco might appear as No.590 for the WHR 100 event, as the original No.590 arrived at Dinas Junction on 4/7/23. The WHHR is also attempting to create a version of Baldwin No.590 from the Imperial War Museum's No.794 and work is underway at the VoR, Aberystwyth. The F&WHR's ALCO Mountaineer will be restored at Glan-y-pwll depot after the depot is reroofed and rewired and will be worked on there rather than Boston Lodge. Funds are currently being raised, including a sponsored pull on 27/8/22. The loco will be disassembled and assessed to produce a costed restoration programme.

 F&WHR 15/8/22

Monday was forecast to be a day of light cloud at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 21C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). No trains were fully booked as of 10:00. Tuesday's 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was shown as sold out the evening before.

No.130 pulled in first at 09:32 with the ECS for the 10:15 Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived next at 10:14 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer and was directed to the WHR loop line as the FR platform was required by the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. Blanche ran round through the WHR platform at 10:23 but was held at signals waiting for the ECS for the 10:30 to arrive. David Lloyd George eventually rolled into the FR platform at 10:30, which was its departure time, the third time the train has run late in three days! Once The Cob section was clear, Blanche completed its run round at 10:32 while the Fairlie completed its run round at 10:34. Blanche's shunt to the WHR platform had to wait the departure of the Fairlie at 10:40 (some 10 minutes late) and eventually happened at 10:46 after checking the vacuum pipe few times. Arriving in the platform at 10:50, the Woodland Wanderer loaded the large crowd on the platform and was able to depart at 11:00, a few minutes late after a number of passengers arrived late after departure time.

This easterly view (15/8/22) shows Blanche and the Woodland Wanderer rake unusually stabled in the WHR loop as the Mountain Spirit ECS was running late out of Boston Lodge and required the FR platform. Welsh Pony turned up in the FR platform at 11:28 with the ECS fro the 11:55. At 11:39 the loco shunted the rear two coaches to the seawall siding before departing on time with a short 5 coach rake. The Garratt arrived back at 12:38. At 13:00 the loco ran to the yard to refuel and water ready for the afternoon trip. The loco ran round at 13:13 and departed at 13:42. Blanche arrived at 13:34 and ran round at 13:50. The Fairlie arrived at 14:01 into the WHR platform in another unusual move as it was running 25 minutes late. This caused Blanche to depart 10 minutes late at 14:05 as the Fairlie ran round. The train eventually left 11 minutes late at 14:41.

First back at the end of the afternoon was No.130 at 16:21. The ECS left at 16:46 for Boston Lodge as soon as Blanche cleared The Cob section arriving back at 16:45 in the FR platform. Blanche ran round at 16:53 and departed with the ECS at 16:58. Welsh Pony arrived back in the FR platform at 17:27 and ran round at 17:33 before departing at 17:37 with its short 5 coach rake. The final train of the day was the Fairlie which returned at 18:02, over 25 minutes late again. A few passengers had detrained at Minffordd in order to catch a Cambrian Coast connection to get home. Upnor Castle turned up propelling two B wagons of coal for the fuelling point at 18:11. The Fairlie ran round at 18:17 before departing with the ECS at 18:21. Upnor Castle left light engine at 18:31 to close the day's activities.

Hop on/Hop off fares and one way First class upgrades

A table of special fares is now available which includes all trains except the Woodland Wanderer from intermediate stations. First class upgrades are now also available for single tickets. Intermediate fares are available for use on a special coach kept available on each rake but no doubt the guard can use their discretion if there are unbooked seats elsewhere in the rake.

See Hop On/Hop Off/First Upgrades fare tables website. The fares shown are Third Class return fares.

F&WHR 14/8/22

Sunday was forecast to be a sunny day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 27C, possibly the end of the current heat wave. FIVE trains were planned from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and one Glaslyn Explorer train) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The afternoon Mountain Spirit is normally SuX but ran today. None of the today's trains was fully booked by 10:00.

No.130 was the first arrival at 09:36 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George arrived next at 09:58 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit, running round at 10:14. The last of the morning's trains was hauled by Blanche as expected which arrived somewhat later than normal with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer at 10:31, followed by running round at 10:39.

No.130 was back at 13:02 and departed ECS at 13:27 immediately after Blanche arrived into the FR platform at 13:26. Blanche ran round at 13:51 but had to wait for the Fairlie to arrive into the WHR platform some 25 minutes late at 14:01 before departing with the 13:55 at 14:05. The Fairlie then ran round and departed at 14:37. This was the second day in succession the train has run late for no apparent reason.

The end of the afternoon saw Blanche return at 16:33 and run round at 16:44 before departing ECS at 16:48. The last train of the day was hauled by the Fairlie which returned at 17:48. The loco ran round at 18:05 and departed with the ECS at 18:09 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 13/8/22

Saturday 12/8/22 was forecast to be a sunny day with temperatures of 30C so a day when many tourists might choose a dip in the sea. In fact the sea temperatures at Black Rock Sands were reputed to be some of the warmest ever experienced. As  result the service pattern was the same as Friday's with ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and The Harbourmaster). No trains were fully booked in the morning with people possibly choosing the beach rather than the railway. The same is true of Sunday and the 5 train service will repeat last Sunday's offering, none of which are fully booked the day in advance.

No.130 was up first arriving ECS at 09:14 and departing for Caernarfon at 09:42. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:55 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. The Fairlie ran round at 10:05. Blanche arrived a little later than normal into the WHR platform with the ECS for the 10:55, but after detaching, waited in the WHR loop for the Fairlie to depart at 10:31. Blanche ran round at 10:34 and departed on time at 10:55.

No.87 arrived at 12:20 with the Snowdonia Star. Unusually the loco detached and ran to Boston Lodge, presumably to refuel and water. Blanche returned at 13:10. The Garratt returned at 13:22 and ran round ready to depart. a mystery developed when the Fairlie did not return at 13:35 as expected and no attempt was made by Blanche to remove the Woodland Wanderer rake from the FR platform. In fact Blanche ran round at 13:41 and departed on time at 13:55 despite the Mountain Spirit not returning. The late running train departed Tan-y-bwlch at 13:32, over half an hour late and passed the Woodland Wanderer at Minffordd. There appeared to be a crew change at Minffordd at 14:08 before the Fairlie resumed its journey a few minutes later. The train arrived back at Porthmadog at 14:20, some 45 minutes late and just10 minutes before its next turn of duty. The Fairlie eventually ran round at 14:45 after refuelling and taking water and the train departed at 14:50, some 20 minutes late.

Blanche was first back arriving in the FR platform at 16:26, running round at 16:33 and departing ECS at 16:35. No.130 was next, arriving in the WHR platform at 16:47 and departing ECS at 16:54. The final train of the day was the delayed Fairlie, which was still 25 minutes late when returning from Tan-y-bwlch. The train eventually rolled into the FR platform at 18:01, about 25 minutes late. Run round came at 18:15 and the ECS departed at 18:20 to close the day's activities.

Mountaineer 12/8/22

Alco No.1265 Mountaineer is currently languishing in Glan-y-pwll storage shed. It will soon be brought down to Boston Lodge for the sponsored pull 'Guess the Time' competition for its transit to Harbour Station on 27/8/22 (see below). The loco found use on lighter trains when the WHR opened as far as Dinas in 1997 and again to Waunfawr in 2000-2001. It will be restored as a coal fired loco requiring a new design of firebox. It will be interesting to see how it performs on the full WHR with its 1 in 40 grades if it is allocated to any such services.

This easterly view (12/8/22) shows Mountaineer stored in Glan-y-pwll new shed. The loco will soon be brought down to Boston Lodge and will need to be well oiled before the transit and, not least, the pull across The Cob! This southerly view (29/04/01) shows Mountaineer running round at Waunfawr in the new lined black BR style livery it wore for the 2000-2001 season. The loco was soon to return to the FR. Rail stacks in Waunfawr yard show that work is about to start on track laying south from Waunfawr. It is a pity a siding was never laid in the yard for operational flexibility. The yard area has become completely overgrown over the last two decades since this photo. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). Llangollen latest

The Llangollen railway had its Class 47 out this weekend and its remaining Mk1 coaches. Previously the railway has run with its red suburban rake. Class 47 No.47449 (running as 1566) managed the 5 strong Mk1 rake with ease. The TSO coaches made a welcome return to the line offering panoramic views of the Vale of Llangollen. See Unofficial Llangollen Railway Facebook page for images. Diesel haulage will occur on Saturdays and the current hot spell may lead to the suspension of steam trains.

F&WHR 12/8/22

Friday 12/8/22 was forecast to be a sunny day with temperatures of 30C so a day when many tourists might choose the beach. As result only two Woodland Wanderer trains are booked today compared to the normal four. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and The Harbourmaster).

First up today was No.130 which arrived at 09:10 with the ECS for the 09:40 The Harbourmaster. Next was David Lloyd George with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit which arrived at 10:01 into the FR platform. The loco ran round promptly at 10:05. It was no surprise when Blanche turned up at 10:18 with its regular ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform. Blanche ran round promptly at 10:24.

No.87 pulled in at 12:26 with the Snowdonia Star and the loco detached and ran to the yard at 12:30. At 12:52 Harlech Castle with the well wagon and a brake van passed through the WHR loop from the Dinas direction while No.87 was still in the yard preparing to coal and water. At 12:55 the PW train reversed into the seawall siding and the Garratt ran round at 13:00 now the WHR loop was clear. Blanche arrived back at 13:15 and the PW train left the yard and crossed The Cob now the section was clear. The train passed through Minffordd at 13:27 heading towards Tan-y-bwlch. Blanche shunted its rake into the yard and ran round at 13:34. Now the FR platform was clear, the Fairlie ran in at 13:45 and Blanche shunted its rake into the far end of the FR platform at 13:47 for the 13:55 departure. The Fairlie ran round at 14:11 and departed on time.

This easterly view (12/8/22) shows Harlech Castle reversing into the yard. The Cob was required by a train in section and the WHR run round was required by the Garratt so the sea wall was the temporary bolt hole for this short freight with the well wagon and brake van. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is courtesy F&WHR and was captured from a web camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

At the end of the afternoon, Blanche returned first at 16:21, running round at 16:32 and departing ECS at 16:36. The Garratt followed at 17:05, departing ECS at 17:10. The Fairlie arrived back last at 17:39 and ran round at 17:56 before departing ECS at 18:01 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 11/8/22

Thursday was forecast to be a sunny day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 28C, when many holidaymakers might be expected to go to the beach. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) and ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first Woodland Wanderer working was fully booked by 10am. Yesterday's missing Cwellyn train may have been due to a staff shortage. Anecdotal reports suggest the loadings have been good but never 'Sold Out' so far on Fareharbor.

No.130 was first again with the Glaslyn Venturer arriving ECS at 09:30. This was followed by David Lloyd George at 09:59 arriving ECS in the FR platform and running round at 10:10. After the Garratt left, Blanche arrived at 10:21 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer, then ran round at 10:25. Both trains left on time. Welsh Pony arrived at 10:52 with the ECS for the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer, running round at 11:15.

No.130 arrived back at 12:59. At 13:14 No.130 ran round as Blanche arrived. Blanche cleared the FR platform for the Fairlie to arrive at 13:43 whilst Blanche ran round in the yard At 13:48 Blanche shunted its rake from the yard to the WHR platform. At 14:04 the Fairlie ran round. At 14:22 Welsh Pony arrived back and at 14:39 ran to the yard to refuel and water. At 14:47 the England completed its run round move and departed with the final Woodland Wanderer service at 14:55.

The Glaslyn Venturer was back at 16:21 with No.130, departing ECS at 16:29 and Blanche followed at 16:25, departing ECS at 16:39. Welsh Pony was back at 17:22 and ran round at 17:25. At 17:29 the England shunted the two spare carriages from the seawall siding back onto the rake and departing ECS at 17:33. The Fairlie arrived back at 17:53 before running round at 18:06 and departing ECS at 18:10 to close the day.

Aberystwyth log train becomes regular weekly working

Colas has confirmed that it has signed a contract with Kronospan of Chirk for a weekly freight train of logs from Aberystwyth. The working was trialled in the Spring and ran in recent weeks via Shrewsbury, Crewe and Chester to Chirk as there is no crossover at Chirk. The train uses the Aberystwyth station loop as a loading siding and utilises NR's Class 97s for haulage. See Rail Advent announcement. This is the third positive rail freight development in North Wales recently with the start of slate waste from Llandudno Junction yard and resumption of stone from Penmaenmawr. The move is reported to reflect the shortage of lorry drivers brought about by BREXIT as well as being a positive reduction in carbon footprint for UK industry.

F&WHR 10/8/22

Wednesday was forecast to be a sunny day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 25C, when many holidaymakers might be expected to go to the beach. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) and ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first two Woodland Wanderer workings were fully booked by 9am as was the first Mountain Spirit. Surprisingly, the Cwellyn service was not booked to run today whereas it was last Wednesday suggesting that the WHR needs more promotional advertising as the FR is running with almost half its trains fully booked! A few years ago plastic tags were issued to travellers on the FR reminding them of the WHR. If a small discount was offered on presentation of such a tag, it could encourage people to visit both railways, after all the modern A487 means a Porthmadog to Caernarfon drive to visit the WHR is just 30 minutes on average. By midday the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer was also fully booked.

No.130 was first again with the Glaslyn Venturer arriving ECS at 09:44. This was followed by David Lloyd George at 10:02 arriving ECS in the FR platform and running round at 10:10. After the Garratt left, Blanche arrived at 10:19 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer, then running round at 10:24. Both trains left on time. Welsh Pony arrived at 11:18 with the ECS for the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer, running round at 11:32.

At 12:31 Harlech Castle arrived in the WHR platform from the WHR hauling the cherrypicker rake with a brake van. The token to proceed was issued almost immediately as the station was coming up on the lunchtime rush period. The rake was noted reversing into Minffordd Yard at 12:40. The Garratt arrived back at 12:58 and the loco ran to the yard at 13:02 to refuel and water before returning to run round at 13:11. Blanche arrived back at 13:18 and shunted its rake to the yard at 13:27. The Lady ran round at 13:43 and shunted its rake to the WHR platform after the Fairlie arrived in the FR platform at 13:45. The Fairlie ran round at 14:06. Welsh Pony arrived back at 14:26 and ran to the yard to refuel and water. The loco ran round at 14:58 and departed at 15:02, seven minutes late but arrived in Tan-y-bwlch at 15:50, some 20 minutes late.

Towards the end of the afternoon the Garratt arrived back at 16:22. Blanche arrived back at 16:35 allowing the ECS Garratt to depart at 16:36 once The Cob was clear. Blanche ran round at 16:43 and departed ECS at 16:48. Welsh Pony arrived back at 17:36, some 25 minutes later than booked (after departing Tan-y-bwlch 30 minutes late) and at 17:40 the loco ran to the yard to refuel and water. The Fairlie arrived back at 18:08, also over half an hour late, probably as a reaction to Welsh Pony's late running. The England departed at 18:09 with the ECS as soon as The Cob was clear. The Fairlie ran round at 18:20 and departed with the ECS at 18:24 to close the day's activities.

Vale of Rheidol Garratt No.60

Some photographers, like your webmaster, must have been disappointed on Tuesday 19/7/22 when all VoR services were suspended due to the risk of lineside fires in the heat wave, especially as we had travelled a long way to see it! It was to have been the inaugural run of the VoR's red Garratt No.60 hauling passenger services to Devil's Bridge. NG/G13 No.60 Drakensberg left Aberystwyth hauling its first official public passenger train on 26/7/22. The engine will be hauling the 10:30 & 14:00 every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday until the 1/9/22, subject to availability.

F&WHR 9/8/22

Tuesday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 23C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) and TWO from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn). The first two Woodland Wanderer workings were fully booked by 9am.

First up today was No.130 which arrived into the WHR platform at 09:18 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:56 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit and ran round at 10:12 as the Garratt prepared to depart. Blanche turned up at 10:20 in the WHR platform with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer and ran round at 10:24 just before the Fairlie departed on the 10:30.

At 11:20 Welsh Pony arrived with the ECS for the 11:55. The loco ran round its short 5 coach rake at 11:33. One open coach and saloon apparently remain in the seawall siding available to be added at short notice if bookings exceed expectations.

No.130 arrived back at 12:59 and the loco shunted to the yard to water and coal emerging at 13:13 as Blanche approached, arriving at 13:14. The Garratt completed its run round at 13:20 as Blanche shunted its rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for the Fairlie's arrival. The Fairlie arrived at 13:38 as Blanche ran round in the yard and, after the Garratt left, Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 13:44 in good time for the 13:55 departure. The Fairlie ran round at 14:05 and Welsh Pony arrived back at 14:18, running to the yard to water and refuel at 14:23. The Fairlie departed on time with the 14:30 Mountain Spirit and the England engine returned to its train at 14:41, completing the run round.

The end of the sunny afternoon saw a simultaneous arrival of No.130 and Blanche at 16:19. Blanche ran round at 16:26 as the ECS Glaslyn Venturer departed before itself departing ECS at 16:36. Welsh Pony arrived back at 17:05 and ran round at 17:09. The England left with the ECS at 17:13. The final movements of the day came at 17:38 with the return of the Fairlie. Run round came at 17:57 with the ECS departing at 18:00 to close the day's activities.

Borth-y-gest Model Railway Exhibition 13-14/8/22

Visitors to the Porthmadog district next weekend, might consider also visiting the Model Railway Show at Borth-y-Gest Church Room, on 13/8/22 (11a.m. to 5 p.m.), and 14/8/22 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Entrance £2. Model railways from Paul Holmes, Phil Traxson, John Wooden, Martin Hallett and Joanna Vincent. Refreshments available. Second hand sales with Nick Lowe. It’s a great little show, in a beautiful setting, very friendly, a bit like a clubroom open day with time to sit and chat, ask questions, share tips, and watch the trains come and go. An N gauge layout may be under construction during the show.

F&WHR 8/8/22

Monday was forecast to be a sunny day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 22C. EIGHT trains were planned from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Explorer trains) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The first Woodland Wanderer working was fully booked by 9am and the 14:55 was withdrawn.

No.130 rolled into the WHR platform at 09:34 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:58 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit. Run round came at 10:16 as the Garratt departed. Blanche turned up at 10:22 in the WHR platform and ran round at 10:35 after the Fairlie had departed.

Welsh Pony arrived at 11:20 with the second Woodland Wanderer ECS into the FR platform with run round coming at 11:43. At 11:47 the open coach and another were shunted to the sea wall siding to reduce the loading and save coal before the 11:55 departed.

At 12:56 No.130 arrived at 12:57 with 8 saloons and the Observation car. Blanche returned at 13:14. The Garratt ran to the fuelling point and was noted running back and running round at 13:17. Blanche shunted its rake to the yard at 13:24 to clear the FR platform for the returning Fairlie. The Fairlie returned at 13:38 and Blanche ran round and shunted its rake from the yard to the WHR platform at 13:49 for the 13.55 departure which left on time. The Fairlie ran round at 14:02 and Welsh Pony arrived back at 14:17 with it short 5 coach rake and then ran light engine to refuel and water at 14:21.The Fairlie ran round at 14:04 and departed on time. Unusually the 14:55 Woodland Wanderer left at 14:46 ECS having been cancelled presumably because of lack of bookings.

First back towards the end of the day was Blanche at 16:12 with run round following at 16:18. At 16:24 Blanche left with the ECS just after No.130 arrived back at 16:22 in the WHR platform. The Garratt's train departed ECS at 16:35. The Fairlie was back at 17:40 and ran round at 17:57 before departing ECS at 18:00 to close the day's activities.

Alco competition 27/8/22

A group of up to 20 volunteers will be pulling the Alco across The Cob from Boston Lodge to Harbour Station on 27/8/22. Let's hope it is well oiled! The aim is to raise funds for the loco's restoration to working order. The loco has previously been used on the WHR both from the 1997 opening and again in 2000-2001 running to Waunfawr on lighter off season trains. The competition is to guess the transit time and a range of prizes are available. Full details are available on this website. The loco has been in store since February 2006 but plans were approved for its rebuild in March 2022.

F&WHR 7/8/22

Sunday was forecast to be a sunny day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 19C. FIVE trains were planned from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and one Glaslyn Explorer train) while there was just ONE from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer). The first Mountain Spirit working was fully booked by 9am.

The first train of the day was No.130 which arrived at 09:34 with the Glaslyn Venturer. The skip train returned from the WHHR at 09:41 hauled by Moelwyn which waited in the WHR loop until the arrival of David Lloyd George with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit at 10:00. At 10:03 Moelwyn shunted the rake to the sea wall siding and remained in the yard until the afternoon after shunting towards the watering point. The Fairlie ran round at 10:14. Blanche arrived at 10:25 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. Blanche had to wait until the Fairlie had cleared The Cob shunt limit before it could run round at 10:34 then departing on time.

No.130 arrived back at 12:57 followed by Blanche at 13:11, which allowed the Garratt to depart ECS at 13:13. Blanche then ran round at 13:23 and at 13:31 Moelwyn emerged from the yard with one bogie wagon.. At 13:33 Moelwyn was shunting the yard with a single wagon in the seawall siding as the Fairlie arrived into the WHR platform. The Fairlie ran round at 13:37 and Blanche departed at 13:57 with the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. At 14:02 Moelwyn departed with the wagon, skips and brakevan but a delay by the signal box blocked the Fairlie from running round for a while until 14:13. The PW train arrived at Minffordd at 14:25 wrong line, ready to shunt into the yard. The Fairlie departed Porthmadog at 14:30 with the afternoon Mountain Spirit.

At 15:07 Moelwyn was back at Porthmadog FR platform with the bogie wagon and brakevan and ran round at 15:10 but was not observed departing before Blanche arrived back at 16:10 into the FR platform. Blanche ran round at 16:19 before departing ECS at 16:23. The Fairlie pulled in at 17:31 and ran round at 17:43. The final movement of the day saw the Fairlie depart ECS at 17:46.

F&WHR 6/8/22

Saturday 6/8/22 was forecast to be an improving day with temperatures of 18C. The service was planned to be a repeat of Friday's trains with ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and The Harbourmaster).

No.130 arrived at 09:16 with the ECS for The Harbourmaster. David Lloyd George arrived into the FR platform with the 10:30 Mountain Spirit at 10:01 and ran round at 10:08. Blanche arrived in the WHR platform at 10:19 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer, back to normal after yesterday afternoon's double headed England haulage. Run round came at 10:24 and both trains departed on time.

No.87 was back at 12:12 and detached and shunted to the yard to coal wand water. At 12:50 it completed its run round and was ready for the return journey to Caernarfon. At 13:05 Blanche arrived back and at 13:11 it shunted its rake to the station yard to clear the FR platform for the next arrival. At 13:38 the Fairlie arrived in the FR platform and Blanche shunted its rake out of the yard and back into the far end of the FR platform as soon as the signals cleared seconds later for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. Once Blanche has departed with the 13:55, the Fairlie was able to complete its run round at 14:01. The Garratt and the Fairlie both departed on time and the station fell quiet for a few hours.

Blanche arrived back at 16:13 and ran round at 16:29 before departing ECS at 16:33. Next back was No.130 which pulled in at 16:36 and departed ECS for the depot at 16:45. The final movements of the day saw the Fairlie return at 17:34, run round at 17:48 and depart ECS at 17:52.

Sunday saw the Woodland Wanderer reduced to two trips as on Friday and Saturday.

F&WHR 5/8/22

Friday 5/8/22 was forecast to be an improving day with temperatures of 17C after morning showers. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and The Harbourmaster). Today's first Woodland Wanderer was already fully booked as early as 12 hours in advance and both were fully booked by mid morning.

No.130 arrived at 09:13 with the ECS for The Harbourmaster. David Lloyd George arrived at 10:11 with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. The loco ran round at 10:15. Welsh Pony arrived at 10:26 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer, running round at 10:36 after the Fairlie had departed. This was a change from Blanche which normally hauled the first Woodland Wanderer working.

No.87 arrived at 12:15 with the Snowdonia Star. The loco ran to the yard to fuel and water at 12:18 and was back on the train by 12:50 ready for the return journey. Welsh Pony returned at 13:07 and shunted to the yard at 13:16. at 13:47 Welsh Pony shunted to the far end of the FR platform as the Garratt was still in the WHR platform and not due to depart until 14:15, after the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer departure. At 13:36 the Fairlie arrived back in the FR platform and ran round at 14:10. No.87 departed at 14:16 and the Fairlie at 14:31. By the time the Woodland Wanderer got back to Tan-y-bwlch it had taken on a pilot, Palmerston, possibly out on test.

This westerly view (5/8/22) shows Palmerston piloting Welsh Pony on the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. Presumably the extra loco was added at Boston Lodge curve as the rake left Porthmadog with just Welsh Pony on the front. The afternoon lull in traffic at Porthmadog allowed a PW working when what was though to be Hugh Napier turned up light engine at 15:33 and departed from the seawall siding with three PW wagons at 16:13 immediately after Palmerston and Welsh Pony arrived. The pair ran round at 16:37 and departed ECS at 16:34 as No.130 arrived back from Caernarfon on the returning Harbourmaster. The Garratt departed ECS at 16:37. The Fairlie arrived back at 17:34 ran round at 17:59 and departed ECS at 18:04 as the last move of the day.

F&WHR 4/8/22

Thursday 4/8/22 was forecast to be a day of improving weather with a sunny afternoon and a maximum temperature of 18C. The F&WHR continues to run the second rake on the Woodland Wanderer making four of these train services available. There were two trains from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn) and eight from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and two Glaslyn Venturer trains for the first time in a while). The first two Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked by 0900 as was the afternoon Mountain Spirit. By early afternoon all four Woodland Wanderer were fully booked.

First up was No.130 at 09:24 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer, running two trips today for the first time in a while. David Lloyd George was next, arriving into the FR platform at 10:01 with the ECS Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 10:07 and left on time. This was quickly followed by Blanche at 10:20 on the ECS Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform with run round accomplished by 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had left. It was back to Welsh Pony which arrived in the WHR platform at 11:23 with the ECS for the second Woodland Wanderer and ran round at 11:29 for the 11:55 departure.

The lunchtime movements saw No.130 arrive in the WHR platform at 12:55 with the returning Glaslyn Venturer which ran round at 13:00. Blanche arrived back at 13:16 and at 13:24 Blanche shunted its rake to the station yard, running round there at 13:38 as the Fairlie returned. Once the Garratt had departed and The Cob was clear Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform at 13:45 and departed on time. The Fairlie ran round at 14:05. Welsh Pony returned at 14:16 into the WHR platform and ran to the yard to coal and water at 14:21 before turning to the train at 14:40 ready for the final 14:55 Woodland Wanderer run of the day.

At 15:18 Harlech Castle arrived light engine and entered the yard to extract the empty coal wagons at 15:27. The loco was back at 16:29 with two loaded coal wagons and ran to the sea wall siding at 16:36 after depositing the wagons in the fuelling point. At 16:42 the diesel extracted 3 coaches from the seawall siding before replacing the Open and Bowsider back in the seawall siding at 16:53. The remaining coach was shunted onto the rake in the yard before the diesel departed light engine for the depot at 17:08.

At 16:14 Blanche arrived back and ran round at 16:19 before departing ECS at 16:30. At 16:21 the Garratt rolled in with enthusiastic footplate staff waving at their friends watching on the webcam! As soon as The Cob section was clear the Garratt departed ECS at 16:40. Welsh Pony arrived back at 17:07 into the WHR platform. The loco ran to the yard at 17:11 to collect the two coaches formed up in the middle road by the diesel. These were shunted onto the head end of the rake which departed ECS at 17:38 after Fairlie's arrival at 17:35. The Fairlie ran round at 1746 and departed ECS at 17:51 as the last move of the day.

This easterly view (4/8/22) shows Harlech Castle hauling the weekly coal delivery to Harbour Station at 16:29 while No.130 waits to run the ECS Glaslyn Venturer back to Boston Lodge. F&WHR 3/8/22

Wednesday 3/8/22 was forecast to be a day of sunny periods and maximum temperature of 18C. The F&WHR continues to run the second rake on the Woodland Wanderer making four of these train services available. There were two trains from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the Cwellyn) and seven from Porthmadog (four Woodland Wanderer trains, two Mountain Spirit trains and a Glaslyn Venturer). All four Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked by midday as was the afternoon Mountain Spirit. It is surprising that the Glaslyn Venturer is not as well booked as the FR trains when price sensitive passengers turn up at Booking Office and find the Woodland Wanderer (£25) is fully booked for the day. Their options are Glaslyn Venturer (£35) and Mountain Spirit (£40). One has to wonder if Booking Office staff are reminding people about the WHR's Glaslyn Venturer which last year often ran twice a day in the peak period.

First up was David Lloyd George arriving into the FR platform at 09:47 with the ECS Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 10:11 and left on time. This was quickly followed by Blanche at 10:15 on the ECS Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform with run round accomplished by 10:21. Just for a change Prince then arrived in the FR platform at 11:25 with the ECS for the second Woodland Wanderer and ran round at 11:37 for the 11:55.

The lunchtime movements saw No.130 arrive in the WHR platform at 12:52 with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived back at 13:17 and at 13:30 Blanche shunted its rake to the station yard. At 13:41 the Fairlie returned into the FR platform as the Garratt departed and Blanche ran round. Once The Cob was clear Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform to depart about 5 minutes late at 13:58. Prince returned at 14:23 into the WHR platform and The Fairlie ran round at 14:02 before departing at 14:32. Prince arrived at 14:13 and ran to the yard to coal and water at 14:22. At 14:43 it returned to its train for the final 14:55 Woodland Wanderer run of the day.

At 16:18 Blanche arrived back and ran round at 16:29 before departing ECS at 16:31. At 16:21 the Garratt rolled in and as soon as The Cob section was clear the Garratt departed ECS at 16:41. Prince arrived back at 17:09 into the WHR platform, running round at 17:15 and departing ECS at 17:18. The Fairlie arrived back into the FR platform at 17:35. The last moves of the day saw the Fairlie run round at 17:49 and depart ECS at 17:54 to close the day's activities.

Friday's train services will see 2 Woodland Wanderer trains and the first is again fully booked a day in advance.

F&WHR 2/8/22

Tuesday 2/8/22 was forecast to be a cloudy day with rain in the morning and maximum temperatures of 18C. The first two Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked as was the Cwellyn by 09:00 showing the appeal of cheaper fares to family groups during the school summer holidays.

A decision has been made to extend the Cwellyn services to additional days of operation in view of their success. The Cwellyn was initially advertised as TThO but will operate additionally on Wednesday this week. It will be interesting to see if this becomes regular in the weeks ahead or if there is any further extension to other days. By midday all four Woodland Wanderer trains, the 13:55, was shown as sold out as was the 14:30 Mountain Spirit. However there was still room on the 13:40 Glaslyn Venturer and families on a budget could book a cheaper partial journey to Nantmor (for a short walk to Pont Aberglaslyn) or Pont Croesor (for the RSPB centre).

First up was David Lloyd George arriving into the FR platform at 10:05 with the Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 10:10 and left on time. This was quickly followed by Blanche at 10:18 on the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform with run round accomplished by 10:23. Welsh Pony then arrived in the FR platform at 11:25 and ran round at 11:33 for the 11:55 Woodland Wanderer. However the loco removed the rear two coaches and shunted them to the seawall siding at 11:39. Lightening the load reduces coal consumption and in this case the rake was left with 5 saloons.

The lunchtime movements saw No.130 arrive in the WHR platform at 12:33 with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived back at 13:22 and at 13:29 Blanche shunted its rake to the station yard and at 13:39 the Fairlie returned into the FR platform. At 13:40 No.130 departed as Blanche ran round. The Fairlie returned at 13:51 into the FR platform and once The Cob was clear Blanche shunted its rake to the WHR platform to depart about 5 minutes late at 14:00. Welsh Pony returned at 14:23 into the WHR platform and the Fairlie ran round at the same time. Welsh Pony was ran round at 14:30 ready for the final 14:55 Woodland Wanderer run of the day.

No.130 arrived back at 16:16 followed by Blanche at 16:26. As soon as The Cob section was clear the Garratt departed ECS at 16:27 and Blanche ran round at 16:30 before departing ECS at 16:36. Welsh Pony arrived back at 17:17 into the WHR platform, running round at 17:27. The Fairlie arrived back into the FR platform at 17:42 and Welsh Pony departed ECS as soon as the signals cleared a minute later. The last moves of the day saw the Fairlie run round at 18:07 and depart ECS at 18:10 to close the day's activities on what had been a dull day weatherwise.

Traffic is certainly increasing on the F&WHR as tomorrow's first two Woodland Wanderer trains and the afternoon Mountain Spirit were fully booked by 19:00 today.

Emma's return to WHHR 1/8/22

This easterly view (1/8/22) shows Emma returning to the WHHR crossing Bryn-y-felin bridge. This was the other WHHR Hunslet to be based at Dinas over WHR 100. F&WHR 1/8/22

Monday 1/8/22 was forecast to be a day with light cloud and rain in the evening. The F&WHR expanded services today by running a second rake on the Woodland Wanderer making four of these train services available possibly for the first time this year, now the school holidays are in full swing.

First up was David Lloyd George arriving into the FR platform at 09:56 with the Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 10:01 and left on time. This was quickly followed by Blanche at 10:16 on the Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform with run round accomplished by 10:21. Welsh Pony then arrived in the FR platform at 11:30 and ran round at 11:35 for the new 11:55 Woodland Wanderer departure.

The lunchtime movements saw No.130 arrive in the WHR platform at 12:58 with the Glaslyn Venturer. Palmerston then put in a appearance in the WHR loop line at 13:04 returning its heritage rake from the WHR 100 Event. Surprisingly the loco was hauling a wagon filled with ballast with the coaches on the rear, quite a load for the little loco on the 1 in 80 climb to Rhyd Ddu!

Blanche arrived back at 13:14 allowing Palmerston to cross The Cob when the section was clear. At 13:20 Blanche shunted its rake to the station yard and at 13:39 the Fairlie returned into the FR platform. At 13:41 No.130 departed as Blanche, which had in the meantime run round, went forwards with its rake onto The Cob. Now the platform was clear Blanche set back into the WHR platform by 13:46. Welsh Pony returned at 14:16 and ran to the yard at 14:19 to refuel and water while the Fairlie ran round. Welsh Pony was back with the rake by 14:38 and ready for a possible record fourth Woodland Wanderer run of the day.

Blanche arrived back at 16:13 and ran round at 16:22 as No.130 arrived back. Blanche departed ECS at 16:29 and No.130 followed ECS at 16:48. Welsh Pony arrived back at 17:11 into the WHR platform, running round at 17:14 and departing ECS at 17:37. Rain began to set in immediately after the Fairlie arrived back at 17:37. The last moves of the day saw the Fairlie run round at 17:50 and depart ECS at 1752 in rather wet conditions.

Russell's return to the WHHR 31/7/22

Several images and videos have come to hand covering the return of rolling stock to the WHHR. Thanks are due to the WHHR's Andrew Goodwin who joined the train at Rhyd Ddu after being supervisor at the Tremadog Road end of the WHR 100 Event all day. Russell took water from the heritage tank at Beddgelert offering an historical recreation tableau of 1930s scenes that several photographers took advantage of. The delay was caused by having to line up the small tank's delivery arm with the inlet on the top of Russell's tank. As Russell now faces south there are new photographic opportunities at the WHHR.

Russell returned facing south 31/7/22

Photographers had a treat at the culmination of the WHR 100 event when Russell returned to the WHR at Pen-y-Mount with the loco facing south. The weather had been dire at times on Saturday and Sunday morning but cleared up nicely in the afternoon. After its last duty at Dinas arriving back about 16:00, the loco propelled its rake around the corner past the Loco Shed to allow No.87 to run round its shuttle and depart at 16:15. Russell then ran to the refuelling point to top up with water and coal for the long journey back to the WHHR before running round and departing on time at 16:35. Many volunteers were invited to join the train back to the WHHR and other positioned themselves along the line to take photos, particularly south of Rhyd Ddu, as the sun came out strongly in the afternoon. Sadly the sun was in the northwest so many locations featured illumination of the side of the train but not the front. The WHHR's thunderbird diesel Emma was retained at Dinas until the special had passed the summit and was due to follow later. Having turned the loco via a low loaded at Dinas and the loco retaining its orientation on return to the WHHR a whole new set of WHHR photo opportunities will now present themselves.

This northerly view (31/7/22) shows Russell passing through dappled light with its 4 coach heritage rake passing Hafod Ruffydd crossing at 17:47. The rapid tree growth since the replanting around 2000 has turned this section into a green tunnel much like many sections of the FR used to be. Spare rails are still stored just north of the crossing. There is a length in open fields just south of the crossing with a footpath crossing of the line from Hafod Ruffydd Ganol farmhouse. New timetable leaflet details 31/7/22

The F&WHR has responded to passengers requests and published a timetable leaflet. Not everyone is on line or can access on line timetables when they are on holiday. Some new details appear on the timetable and some times changed, in particular the Woodland Wanderer has changed to an XX:55 standard departure time.. As regards the Woodland Wanderer the grey columns indicate the second set which might be activated if passenger numbers justify. This can run as one or two trips departing at 11:55 and 14:55. The Mountain Spirit is amended with the two train service running daily with the exception of the 14:30 which does not run Sundays. Both the FSO WHR through trains, The Harbourmaster and Snowdonia Star are shown as 'Additional trains may be added according to demand' but additional trains cannot be added on any single day so this must apply to additional DAYS in a week but that then would clash with the Gelert Explorer so there is some doubt about the meaning of this phrase!

The Glaslyn Venturer is marked as 10:15 SuO working and a 13:40 working FSSuX. However both paths are available FSX if demand justifies the extra train running. The new WHR TThO Cwellyn service is shown as 'Additional trains may be run according to demand'. The General Manager hinted this might include additional 'midweek days' i.e. Wednesdays, but there is nothing to prevent the train being used on Sunday/Monday too. However pathing this train on Fridays and Saturdays might be more difficult with the through WHR trains on the line.

Webmaster's holiday

Your webmaster is taking a break to visit the WHR 100 Event for the next few days. Normal service will be resumed on Monday 1/8/22.

Palmerston departs for WHR 100 event 29/7/22

While Russell went to Dinas understandably early to test out operational procedures on the FR, Palmerston, which has appeared on the WHR before, left for Dinas today, departing Porthmadog with a very short 3 coach rake including a brake coach No.10 and saloons Nos.23/24. The timing load indicates the WHHR are confident that Russell, with its four coach rake, is more powerful than Palmerston.

F&WHR 29/7/22

The forecast was for sunny periods at Porthmadog and 21C maximum temperatures. There was ONE trains from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and The Harbourmaster train). It seems the holiday peak is continuing as the Woodland Wanderer train was fully booked in the morning. The Harbourmaster standard fares were initially not present on the Fareharbor system, which might indicate Sold Out, but Gold and Beddgelert tickets for this train were available. Saturday's through trains on the WHR have been suspended as well Sunday's Gelert Explorer as the WHR Dinas to Rhyd Ddu section is being used both days for WHR 100 events.

First up today was No.130 which rolled into the WHR at 09:05 with the ECS for 09:40 The Harbourmaster. David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit at 10:12 and ran round at 10:16 as Blanche approached with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. Blanche arrived in the WHR platform at 10:21 and ran round at 10:37 after the Fairlie had departed.

Weather for WHR 100 Event

The Met Office is forecasting overcast weather around the WHR 100 Event and even some drizzle Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning might see some heavy rain but improving a little by Sunday afternoon with sunshine possible.

New Premier Inn advert

'Right next to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, with views of Black Rock Sands Beach on one side and the peaks of Snowdonia on the other.' While better than previous attempts, the new Porthmadog Premier Inn advert might be a bit misleading to describe the views of Porthmadog Harbour/Glaslyn Estuary as 'Black Rock Sands Beach, which begins at Ynys Cyngar, about 2 miles distant and around a headland.

WHR History

IT’S HISTORY WEEK AND THE F&WHR IS CELEBRATING AN HISTORIC ANNIVERSARY

The first themed week of the #LoveYourRailway campaign is all about - History - which is good timing, as this weekend the F&WHR starts the Welsh Highland Railway Centenary celebrations! 100 years ago, the former North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway reopened under new management as the Welsh Highland Railway - running trains between Dinas and South Snowdon (now known as Rhyd Ddu). This weekend will see the F&WHR re-enacting the original timetable, with vintage trains using original (and replica) stock.

The only surviving original Welsh Highland Railway steam locomotive, 1906 Hunslet 2-6-2T Russell, will be hauling a heritage train of carriages from its home base at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog. A second train will use the F&WHR's 1864 England 0-4-0STT Palmerston and F&WHR heritage carriages - this loco was used during the construction of the NWNGR in 1876, working out of Dinas, then in 1922 worked for William McAlpine on the Welsh Highland Railway construction further south.

There will be plenty to keep visitors occupied over the weekend, in addition to the Russell and Palmerston Heritage Trains, there will be an Evening Photo Charter, a vintage shuttle bus service, Footplate Rides, Model Layouts, Photo Exhibitions, pre-1939 Vintage Car displays, Catering Vans, a Cake stand and a Real Ale Bar.

There will also be complementary activities at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog over the weekend. Further information on this event can be found on the website; WHR 100 Event.

Historical note:

The North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway completed the section of line from Dinas to Rhyd Ddu in 1881, which was subsequently taken over by the Welsh Highland Railway in 1922. The new company re-activated a 1914 Light Railway Order in order to complete the 'missing' link between Rhyd-Ddu and Porthmadog which had been partially completed in 1906 by the Porthmadog Beddgelert and South Snowdon Railway. The WHR finally opened in its entirety in 1923 (which will be celebrated with a further Centenary event next year.) Sadly, after a somewhat turbulent financial and operational history the railway closed in 1937 and was scrapped in World War 2.

The railway has always held a special attraction among railway enthusiasts, who were keen to see it rebuilt for modern day tourists to enjoy. After many years of effort by various groups and individuals, along with generous grants from EU Regional Funding programmes, the aspirations of the directors of the NWNGR were finally realised in 2010, when the ‘Rheilffordd Eryri/Welsh Highland Railway’ was opened all the way from Caernarfon to Porthmadog.

F&WHR 28/7/22

Wednesday was planned to be a repeat of Tuesday's services. The forecast was for a cloudy day at Porthmadog and 18C maximum temperatures. There were TWO trains from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer and the new Cwellyn Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu service) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). It seems the holiday peak has arrived as both Woodland Wanderer trains were fully booked in the morning but it did not appear that there was any attempt to add the additional set for the Woodland Wanderer as there was room on both the Mountain Spirit trains and the Glaslyn Venturer.

Surprisingly the new 12:30 Cwellyn service was also fully booked very early today. This service carries an additional coach for hop on-hop off passengers to join/get off at intermediate stations, such as Waunfawr, if room allows, like all other F&WHR services except the Woodland Wanderer. If this train is successful without abstraction from the Gelert Explorer, its operation may be reviewed after the first week and extended from TThO as currently planned to TWThO.

First up today was David Lloyd George which pulled in at 10:02 with the ECS Mountain Spirit and the loco ran round at 10:13. Blanche arrived at 10:17 with the Woodland Wanderer and ran round at 10:22.

The lunchtime rush saw No.130 arrive in the WHR platform at 12:58 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived at 13:02 with the returning Woodland Wanderer. Blanche shunted the rake into the yard at 13:20 and back into the WHR platform at 13:46 shortly after the Garratt vacated it. The Fairlie was then able to complete its run round at 13:58 in preparation for the 14:30 Mountain Spirit

At the end of the day Blanche arrived back in the FR platform at 16:15. No.130 rolled back into the WHR platform at 16:22 as Blanche ran round. Blanche departed with the ECS at 16:26 and the Garratt followed ECS at 16:36 after The Cob section was clear. The Fairlie arrived back at 17:38, ran round at 17:47 and departed ECS at 17:49 to end the day's activities.

Race the Train 20/7/22

The annual Race the Train event was run on 20/7/22 with No.87 hauling the competitors to Dinas in the evening and pacing the runners downhill to Caernarfon. A childrens' race from Hendy level crossing was run first, after the Gelert Explorer had returned, again with the train pacing the children.

F&WHR 27/7/22

Wednesday was forecast to be a day with sunny periods later at Porthmadog and 18C maximum temperatures. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). Yesterday's Cwellyn train ran nearly full but a decision on extending the service to Wednesdays as well seems to have been put off until next week as the timetable remains TThO at the moment. This may be to check for any abstraction from the Gelert Explorer service which has higher fares, though it was fully booked on Tuesday despite the inaugural Cwellyn service. On the FR the Woodland Wanderer could also abstract income from the higher fare Mountain Spirit which might explain why the spare set has not yet been activated.

It seems the holiday peak has arrived as both Woodland Wanderer and both Mountain Spirit trains were again fully booked this morning but it did not appear that there was any attempt to add the additional set for the two extra Woodland Wanderer paths. There may be an issue of staff resources as there appear to be a few serviceable locos available e.g. Prince. Presumably passengers who found all the FR trains booked could switch to the Glaslyn Venturer.

First up today was David Lloyd George with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit which arrived in the FR platform at 09:58. The loco ran round at 10:10. Next was Blanche with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer which arrived in the WHR platform at 10:21 and ran round at 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had departed.

At 13:00 No.130 rolled in with the ECS for the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer. If traffic grows this will be supplemented by a morning working too. Blanche arrived back at 13:15 and notable in the rake in replica NWNGR coach No.24, which some might have thought would be included with WHR coach No.23 in Palmerston's rake at the WHR 100 Event this weekend as the event celebrates the reopening of the NWNGR section of the line from Dinas to Rhyd Ddu. Blanche shunted the rake to the yard at 13:20 and ran round at 13:40 as the Fairlie arrived back. At 13:43 the rake was shunted to the WHR platform for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer which left on time. The Fairlie ran round at 14:09 ready for the 14:30 Mountain Spirit.

First back was Blanche at 16:08. At 16:22 No.130 returned while Blanche ran round. Blanche departed with the ECS at 16:25 and No.130 followed at 16:37 with the ECS Glaslyn Venturer. The Fairlie returned and 17:32 and ran round at 17:48. The final movements of the day came when the ECS departed at 17:51.

F&WHR 26/7/22

Tuesday was forecast to be an improving day with sunny periods later at Porthmadog and 17C maximum temperatures. The expected summer holiday rush has not impacted the F&WHR yet with a subdued Monday service planned. It seems the holiday peak has arrived as both Woodland Wanderer and both Mountain Spirit trains were fully booked in the morning but it did not appear that there was any attempt to add the additional set for the Woodland Wanderer. Presumably passengers who found all the FR trains booked could switch to the Glaslyn Venturer. Surprisingly the Gelert Explorer was also fully booked so it is just as well that the new Cwellyn service ran today. Lyd was confirmed as the haulage for the 12:30 Cwellyn service. If this is successful without abstraction from other services, its operation may be extended from TThO as currently planned to TWThO.

The first train of the day was the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit hauled by David Lloyd George which arrived into the FR platform at 09:57. Blanche arrived with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform at 10:23 as the Fairlie ran round. The Woodland Wanderer rake used had changed today and the rear coach was No.113 not the two brake coaches Nos.11/12 used on the rear of the normal set. Blanche waited for the Mountain Spirit to depart before running round at 10:35.

No.130 pulled in with the ECS for the 13:40 Glaslyn Venturer at 12:59. Blanche arrived back at 13:11 and shunted its rake to the yard at 13:20 to make space for the returning Mountain Spirit in the FR platform. The Fairlie arrived in the FR platform at 13:40 as the Garratt departed. Blanche then ran round and at 13:43 shunted the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer to the WHR platform in good time to load the throng waiting in the sunshine on the platform at 13:47. The Fairlie ran round at 14:13 to prepare for the 14:30 Mountain Spirit.

Blanche arrived back at 16:08, ran round at 16:17 and disposed the ECS, departing at 16:22, just 2 minutes after the Garratt returned. The Garratt then left ECS for Boston Lodge at 16:33. The final train of the day was the Fairlie returning at 17:32, running round at 17:42 and departing ECS for the depot at 17:49 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 25/7/22

Monday was forecast to be an overcast day at Porthmadog with 17C maximum temperatures. The expected summer holiday rush has not impacted the F&WHR yet with a subdued Monday service planned. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). Both Woodland Wanderer were fully booked in the morning but there was no attempt to add the additional set. Presumably passengers for Tan-y-bwlch who found the Woodland Wanderer fully booked could buy hop off tickets on the Mountain Spirit and have a longer break there.

The FR services are looking very familiar with regulars David Lloyd George and Blanche despite the availability of 3 England engines. On the other hand Merddin Emrys is no longer available as it is apparently in Boston Lodge with cab and tanks off for serious firebox repairs. First up today was David Lloyd George arriving at 10:03 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit which ran round at 10:10. Blanche arrived at 10:12 sufficiently early to run round at 10:18 without impacting the departure of the Mountain Spirit.

No.130 arrived at 12:37 into the WHR platform for the 13:40 Glaslyn Venturer. This train always seems to arrive an hour before departure time, maybe to allow the crew to have some lunch? Blanche returned somewhat later than normal at 13:25 and ran round at 13:37 ready for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer departure from the FR platform. After passing Tan-y-bwlch eastbound at 11:09, the Woodland Wanderer did not reappear there at 13:00 or arrive back at Porthmadog at 13:35! The mystery was solved when it was revealed the Fairlie hit a fallen branch. The loco was detached and ran towards Blaenau Ffestiniog to collect a man with a chainsaw at Tan-y-grisiau. Upnor Castle came up to Dduallt. Upnor Castle did pass through Tan-y-bwlch westbound light engine at 13:21.

This easterly view (25/7/22) shows David Lloyd George stopped at what appears to be Dingle curve on The Deviation with a fallen branch lodged between the Observation car and the loco. The loco then detaches to remove the obstruction. Other than a few scrapes there was no damage and the train was able to fulfill its diagram after a delay to clear the line and check the rolling stock. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is copyright Rowan Griffiths and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The Fairlie was noted passing through Tan-y-bwlch at 14:57 some 2 hours late and passing Blanche which had arrived about 20 minutes earlier with the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. By 15:00 there were a large number of people waiting on the platform for the delayed 14:30 Mountain Spirit, fortunately in the sunshine. The Fairlie rolled in at 15:35 and promptly detached to coal and water. Meanwhile the passengers dispersed after their 5 hour marathon, some 2 hours late. The Fairlie ran round at 15:48 and departed at 15:51 with the 14:30 Mountain Spirit (some 81 minutes late) passing the returning Woodland Wanderer at Minffordd at 16:00.

Blanche arrived back first at 16:12 and ran round at 16:20 as the Garratt rolled in before departing ECS at 16:26. Meanwhile the Fairlie departed Tan-y-bwlch at 16:30, some 75 minutes late, heading for Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Garratt left Porthmadog ECS for the depot at 16:37. The Fairlie passed returned through Tan-y-bwlch at 18:04, some 69 minutes late by cutting back the stop at Blaenau Ffestiniog, departing just 1 minute later. The Mountain Spirit arrived back at Porthmadog at 18:39, some 64 minutes late. Run round came at 18:53 and the ECS departed for the depot at 18:55 to close the day's activities.

The KMX returned to Porthmadog from the WHR during the course of the day presumably after tamping part of the WHR in preparation for the WHR 100 Event and ended up parked outside the old Loco Shed.

Russell goes to Dinas 24/7/22

Russell covered the remaining sections of the WHR between Pen-y-Mount and Dinas through Rhyd Ddu during the afternoon of 24/7/22. This was probably the  first time for the loco between Beddgelert and Waunfawr since the line closed in 1936. There were some ECS movements in 19/6/1937 and 21/6/1937 when it was clear the FR would not be offering Summer services that year and Russell moved WHR rolling stock from Boston Lodge to Dinas.

Maybe the day was chosen because of wet conditions which would reduce fire risk on the 1 in 40 Beddgelert Forest section. The WHHR's Andrew Goodwin was on hand to cover the ECS stock transfer as was the F&WHR's Chris Parry (thanks to both for images). Next week the loco will be reversed to run chimney first from Dinas up to Rhyd Ddu by using a low loader fitted with rails and reversing it in Dinas North Yard. Test runs to Rhyd Ddu are likely this week and the provision of an air brake fitted rescue diesel cannot be ruled out but the replica brake coach No.8 is dual fitted.

F&WHR 24/7/22

Sunday was forecast to be an overcast day at Porthmadog with occasional drizzle and 19C maximum temperatures. The expected summer holiday rush has not impacted the F&WHR yet with a subdued Sunday service planned. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FOUR trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, a morning Mountain Spirit train and the morning Glaslyn Venturer train). The 13:55 Woodland Wanderer was fully booked in the morning.

No.130 turned up ECS at 09:18 for the 10:15 Glaslyn Venturer. This was followed by David Lloyd George at 10:01 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit, running round at 10:10. Once the Garratt departed, Blanche followed into the WHR platform with the ECS for the 10:55 but was a little too late to run round. It ran round at 10:35 after the Mountain Spirit had cleared station limits.

A surprise visitor at 11:30 was Lyd with a 5 coach rake heading for Dinas. This might be the train being used in the new Cwellyn service starting Tuesday 26/7/22. It consisted of coach No.106, a saloon, a brake coach another saloon and Observation Car No.101 on the rear. The train departed at 11:53 for Dinas. The Garratt arrived back at 12:56 in poor weather and Blanche followed at 13:10. The Garratt left ECS at 13:13 as the WHR path was required by Russell and its Heritage rake which was booked to depart Pen-y-Mount at 14:00 for Dinas, following the Gelert Explorer's return journey.

Blanche ran round at 13:33 ready for the 13:55 departure while the Fairlie arrived back in the WHR platform at 13:38. The Fairlie ran to the fuelling and watering point in the station yard at 13:44 and returned to complete the run round at 14:04 before departing ECS at 14:14. The weather had improved a little by the end of the afternoon when Blanche returned at 16:07. Run round came at 16:14 and the ECS departed at 16:19 to close the day.

Reopening Aberystwyth-Carmarthen link latest

Reopening the Aberystwyth-Carmarthen rail ink is included in the latest Welsh National Transport plan which is out for consultation. The scheme is now defined as the Swansea-Aberystwyth Rail Link which may mean a switch in focus to using the Central Wales line to Llandeilo and about 20 miles of new construction between there and Lampeter following the Dulais and Cothi/Twrch valleys through Talley and Ffarmers to a short 1km summit tunnel under the Cambrian mountains close to Lampeter. This route has been surveyed many times in the past for proposed Victorian railways which came to nothing and avoids the displacement of the Gwili Railway between Carmarthen and Llanpumsaint whilst providing a shorter direct route between Aberystwyth and Swansea (missing out Carmarthen).

Strangely the project is appraised as negative on Landscape/Heritage/Ecosystems even though it is acknowledged to provide new public transport opportunities and reduce car travel! Harking back to the route's closure after flooding in the Ystwyth valley in February 1965, the project brief states the development and route selection of the Swansea to Aberystwyth Rail link should consider resilience to flooding and coastal erosion, as well as to extreme weather events, with the route avoiding coastlines where possible. No part of the line as currently proposed runs along the Cambrian Coast.

The Aberystwyth-Swansea rail link timeline sees research to define the project 2022-5 and joint funding of the necessary outline design and powers 2025-7. Previous feasibility projects have been conducted and are available on line on the TRAWS website. The new WAG documents can be viewed on line and an online form allows feedback. Consultation comes to an end on 11/10/22. The documents can be downloaded here. Sadly reopening the Bangor-Afonwen missing rail link does not feature in the document which focusses largely on South Wales, an often criticised aspect of WAG, which is based in Cardiff.

F&WHR 23/7/22

Saturday was forecast to be a rainy day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 18C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the Harbourmaster train). Despite it being the first weekend of the school summer holidays only two Woodland Wanderer trains are planned.

No.130 arrived at 09:02 with the ECS for the 09:40 Harbourmaster through train to Caernarfon. With the drizzle creating good condensation steam effects David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit at 10:05. The Fairlie ran round at 10:15 as Blanche approached the WHR platform at 10:21 with the ECS 10:55 Woodland Wanderer. Blanche had a tight run round at 10:27 minutes before the Mountain Spirit departed.

No.87 pulled in at 12:15 with the Snowdonia Star, uncoupled and ran to the station yard to coal and water at 12:20. At 12:55 the loco ran round its train prior to the return of Blanche at 13:15. The loco shunted its rake to the sidings at 13:24 leaving the FR platform clear for the Fairlie's return at 13:43. Blanche ran round at 13:45 and propelled its rake into the far end of the FR platform by 13:51 just in time for the 13:55 departure which left 3 minutes late! The Fairlie ran round at 14:15. Diesel Harlech Castle arrived in the FR yard at 14:18 with two coal wagons. It later emerged from the yard  at 14:35 and departed at 14:45 light engine back to Boston Lodge.

At the end of the afternoon Blanche returned at 16:15 and ran round at 16:22, still in wet conditions before departing ECS at 16:27. The Garratt arrived at 16:37 and departed ECS at 16:52. The final working was the Fairlie arriving back at 17:36 and running round at 17:49 before departing ECS at 17:53 to close a very wet day at Porthmadog!

Preparations for WHR 100 Event

The WHR 100 Event is just a week away and final preparations for the event are underway. Sometime in the next few days, Palmerston and another small FR engine will make their way to Dinas along with an FR 'Colonel Stephens' rake (presumably including Nos.23/24). Palmerston will be used on two of the four workings each day from Dinas to Rhyd Ddu and the other small engine will be used on the Cwellyn service which starts TThO initially from Tuesday 26/7/22.

Russell is in service on the WHHR this weekend but will be turned via low loader to face uphill Dinas to Rhyd Ddu and sent to Dinas next week with the WHHR train previously identified. It is likely to be involved in some test runs prior to the WHR 100 Event weekend. After the event Russell will return early Sunday evening to Pen-y-Mount. There will also be events at the WHHR and there has already seen some testing of the skip train.

This northerly view (22/7/22) shows the FR's skip train on test at the WHHR near Pen-y-Mount junction. The skips are top and tailed by diesel shunters, the nearest of which is thought to be the Motor Rail used in the construction of the WHR some 100 years ago. F&WHR 22/7/22

Porthmadog was forecast to be a day of improving weather after an overcast start with 18C max and sunny periods later. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the Harbourmaster train). The majority of schools do not break up until the end of this week so the F&WHR is expected to run a more intense service from next week with additional Cwellyn trains on the WHR and additional FR services such as two rakes running up to 4 Woodland Wanderer trains per day.

The first train of the day was The Harbourmaster hauled by No.130 which arrived ECS at 09:20 in the WHR platform. David Lloyd George arrived at 09:58 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit and ran round at 10:13 as Lyd approached the WHR with the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer. Lyd arrived at 10:19 and ran round at 10:25.

No.87 arrived with the Snowdonia Star at 12:!4 and the loco detached and ran to the watering point at 12:18 as Lyd arrived back. No.87 ran round at 13:13. At 13:15 Lyd shunted its rake to the yard. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:47 allowing Lyd to shunt out of the sidings and back into the end of the FR platform where the crowd was waiting for the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. Lyd left some 5 minutes late allowing the Fairlie to run round but the other two trains left on time.

At the end of the day Lyd arrived back at 16:10 and ran round at 16:20 before departing ECS at 16:24. No.130 arrived back at 16:38 and departed ECS at 16:48. Last back was the Fairlie at 17:33 which ran round at 17:48 and departed ECS at 17:52 to close the day's activities.

WHR 100 Event price drop

The F&WHR has responded to comments about ticket prices for this event and has made the £60 Rover ticket a two day Rover. Those who have already bought a Day Rover will be able to use it on both days.

Blanche and Welsh Pony steamed 19/7/22

A small engine is going to the WHR's Dinas depot to be outstabled for the new Cwellyn service from next Thursday. There is some speculation about which loco it will be. Palmerston is already going the WHR 100 Event. Will the Cwellyn service be hauled by Blanche or Welsh Pony? Obviously the England engine is the more historically appropriate, though Blanche has been used on the WHR before.

F&WHR 21/7/22

Porthmadog was forecast to be a day of sunny periods with 19C max and sunny periods. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit trains and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The Harbour Station webcam was working again and the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was sold out. The majority of schools do not break up until the end of this week so the F&WHR is still operating a low season service.

First up was David Lloyd George with the ECS for the Mountain Spirit which arrived in the WHR platform at 10:00. The loco ran round at 10:10 as Lyd approached the WHR platform with the ECS for the10:55 Woodland Wanderer which arrived at 10:14 and ran round at 10:22. The third train was the Glaslyn Venturer hauled by No.130 which arrived at 12:48.

Lyd arrived back at 13:09 and propelled its rake back onto The Cob at 13:17. The loco then drew the Woodland Wanderer back into the yard and cleared the platform for the Fairlie which arrived back at 13:37. Lyd ran round and following departure of the Garratt, propelled its rake into the WHR platform at 13:49.

First back at the end of the day was Lyd at 16:07. The loco ran round 10 minutes later and departed ECS at 16:20 with the Garratt running in at 16:23 with the returning Glaslyn Venturer. The last train in was the Mountain Spirit at about 17:30.

Heat disruption 19/7/22

While heat and the risk of lineside fires impacted both NR and some heritage lines, the ability of some heritage lines to run diesel services at low speed meant they could continue. The Vale of Rheidol cancelled services on both Tuesday 19/7/22 and Wednesday 20/7/22 meaning its advertised first public service hauled by Garratt No.60 did not occur. The FR kept operating though rail temperatures rose to 50C in direct sunlight with expansion gaps proving adequate for the rail expansion.

Skips at the WHHR 18/6/22

This northerly view (18/7/22) shows the FR's skip train stored at the WHHR at Gelert's Farm. The skips will be used to recreate construction trains on the WHR 100 years ago during the WHR 100 Event at the end of July. Webmaster's Holiday

Your webmaster is taking a few day's holiday from 18/7/22 at his alma mater UCW Aberystwyth. Normal service will be restored on Thursday 21/7/22.

F&WHR 17/7/22

Sunday was forecast to be another sunny and increasingly warm day at Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 27C. The initial plan was for ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FOUR trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, one morning Mountain Spirit and the morning Glaslyn Venturer train). The Harbour Station webcam was still out of action all day again.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch David Lloyd George arrived  at 11:14 on the 10:30 Mountain Spirit and departed 7 minutes later for Blaenau Ffestiniog. Blanche arrived with the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer at 11:44. The lightly loaded train departed for Porthmadog at 12:32. The Fairlie returned to Tan-y-bwlch at 12:59, pausing for just 3 minutes to collect the token. Blanche returned at 14:36 with the 12:55 Woodland Wanderer train. This train was not shunted today as the following 14:30 Mountain Spirit has been cancelled due to anticipated lack of demand with the hot weather. The train departed for Porthmadog at 15:32 as the final working of the day.

WHR 100 Event at WHHR

The WHHR is also celebrating the WHR 100 event. The F&WHR sent the WHHR a rake of skips to demonstrate construction trains on 26/6/22. Now a Motor Rail diesel has arrived that can replicate the construction scenes of 100 years ago with realistic rolling stock.

This westerly view (16/7/22) shows a Motor Rail diesel being delivered to the WHHR at Gelert's Farm. The loco will be used with the skip train to demonstrate construction trains as used to complete the WHR 100 years ago. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is copyright Andrew Goodwin (WHHR) and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

There will also be complementary activities at Porthmadog on the WHHR over the weekend. These will include operation of an intensive steam service with Gelert and a recreation of a construction train hauled by what is believed to be the only surviving internal combustion locomotive used in the building of the original Welsh Highland Railway. More details will be available on the WHHR Facebook page and website.

Day tickets will be available for purchase in person at the time of visiting, at the WHHR ticket office and shop on Tremadog Road. The prices for each day are set at Family £37.50, Adult £14.50 and Child £7.00, but Dinas Day Rover holders, FRS, WHRS, WHRHG and WHHR members and F&WHR staff will be welcome to travel at normal prices (Family £30.00, Adult £11.50 and Child £5.50) on presentation of their Day Rover ticket, valid membership card or staff pass.

F&WHR 16/7/22

Saturday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog with a maximum temperatures of 21C. The FSO service pattern has become well established with ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FOUR trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the Harbourmaster through train). Only the morning Mountain Spirit was shown initially. The Harbour station webcam was unavailable all day.

David Lloyd George arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:05 on the 10:30 Mountain Spirit and departed at 11:10 for Blaenau Ffestiniog. It was followed by Blanche passing Minffordd at 11:06 on the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer with a well loaded train. Blanche left for Porthmadog at 12:34 on the return run. The Fairlie arrived at Tan-y-bwlch on its return journey at 12:57, departing for Porthmadog at 13:01.

Blanche arrived back at Tan-y-bwlch on the 13:55 at 14:36 which was lightly loaded. The rake contained WHR coach No.23 which might be due to go to Dinas to form part of Palmerston's WHR 100 Event rake (along with NWNGR replica coach No.24?) and also operate in the new Cwellyn midday Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu rake. At 14:48 the rake was shunted to the westbound platform leaving the eastbound platform free for the Fairlie to arrive with the 14:30 Mountain Spirit at 15:06. The Fairlie left at 15:12 and Blanche at 15:35. The Fairlie return to Tan-y-bwlch at 16:58 from Blaenau Ffestiniog and continues on its final trip at 16:59 to close the day's activities. There was still a problem with the Harbour Station webcam at the end of the day. Today's light loadings are a traditional feature of hot days on the F&WHR when many holidaymakers prefer the beach.

North Wales main line 15-16/7/22

The launch event of the Class 197 at Chester did not invite many commentators but a new female Youtuber/enthusiast GLoves Trains did gain access. Click here to see her revealing video of the Class 197.

Nationally, freight is back to pre-COVID levels and growing strongly. A new working has appeared out of Penmaenmawr, 6K17 the 16:53 SSuX to Crewe Basford Hall SSM. The working was cancelled every day this week so it may be a path that is yet to be used regularly or has yet to start operation. Penmaenmawr is still providing a regular stone flow to Tuebrook, Liverpool with Class 60 haulage. The slate waste working from Llandudno Junction yard has not started either despite the terminal on Glan Conwy curve being finished earlier this year and the siding being connected and signalled.

On Friday 15/7/22 there was another trial run of the Aberystwyth-Chirk logs with Class 37s Nos.97302 (ex 37170) and 37418 ran round in Aberystwyth after working 6C54 earlier Friday, the 0205 Chirk-Aberystwyth empties, arriving at 05:34 at sunrise. The loaded train departed 10 mins late at 16:05 and ran via Crewe and Chester as the second run, arriving at Chirk Chronospan on time at 23:55. With three successful trips now under it belt Chronospan may soon decide to make this a weekly run rather than a random STP.

TfW liveried Class 67 No.67025 hauled 9K67 the 09:51 ECS Holyhead to Crewe ECS on Saturday morning as usual when other two car DMUs were full and standing in this heat! TfW Control is yet to realise the full potential of the crowd busters to ease the strain on the North Wales Coast cause, some believe, by focussing of South Wales problems and neglecting North Wales.

F&WHR 15/7/22

Friday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods in Porthmadog with a maximum temperatures of 20C. There is ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (one Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the Harbourmaster through train). The traffic lights near the Premier Inn entrance, that had been causing congestion, were removed during the course of the day. The afternoon Woodland Wanderer set was booked for a special working.

The first movement of the day was Upnor Castle propelling two B wagons full of coal for the fuelling point which arrived at 08:18. The diesel left light engine at 08:42. Next up was No.130 with the ECS for the 09:40 Harbourmaster arriving in the WHR platform at 09:19. At 09:54 David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie ran round at 10:17 after fuelling and watering. Blanche came over rather late, arriving in the WHR platform at 10:31 and delaying the departure of the Fairlie a little. Blanche ran round at 10:40.

At 12:24 No.87 arrived with the Snowdonia Star and the Garratt ran to refuel and water for the return journey at 12:28 before returning to the train at 12:55. Blanche arrived back at 13:10 and 7 minutes later its rake was propelled onto The Cob before being hauled back into the yard, where the loco ran round at 13:33. The Fairlie was back at 13:35 and ran round at 13:59. It appeared that the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer had been cancelled and instead ran as a hired special train departing at 15:50 and arriving at Tan-y-bwlch at 16:22. The train ran in the abandoned path of the 15:45 Woodland Wanderer and celebrated the life of S&T volunteer John Maxey who died away recently.

No.130 rolled in at 16:37 with the returning Harbourmaster and departed ECS 9 minutes later. The Fairlie arrived at 17:32 and ran round at 17:44, before departing with the ECS at 17:47. Meanwhile Blanche departed Tan-y-bwlch with the special at 17:40 and arrived back at Porthmadog at 18:12 carrying a headboard. The train departed ECS at 18:20 after a quick run round.

This westerly view (15/7/22) shows Blanche returning with the special to Tan-y-bwlch at 18:12 with the headboard Maxey's Shiny Express, a tribute to S&T volunteer John Maxey who died recently. F&WHR summer services 15/7/22

With the school summer holidays starting this weekend for many, the F&WHR has confirmed its summer holidays peak service will be as previously stated with up to 4 Woodland Wanderer and up to two Mountain Spirit trains per day on the FR according to demand. The WHR will see up to two Glaslyn Venturer trains per day and one Gelert Explorer FSX and the through services The Harbourmaster/Snowdonia Star FSO. The new peak TThO 12:00 Cwellyn working from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu does not start until 26/7/22, missing the first 10 days of the holiday but may be extended to additional midweek days according to demand.

This video was published on 15/7/22 and is best viewed at 1080p with Chrome. This video was produced by John Wooden (F&WHR) on a professional 4K Betamax camcorder.

Travel between intermediate stations

For those passengers who like using the train as part of a walk or wish to do a shorter train journey, the F&WHR has introduced an intermediate travel carriage on all but the Woodland Wanderer services. So, subject to there being room in the carriage, passengers may join the train and pay the guard for their ticket. Please note, there are no COVID distancing restrictions in this carriage. Passengers will find information on times and fares in the train services section of the website. This facility is for ‘turn up and go’ passengers and is not available to book in advance. This carriage may also be used for return journeys between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Porthmadog and between Beddgelert and Porthmadog on days when there is more than one service, meaning passengers may travel out on the morning Glaslyn Venturer or Mountain Spirit and return on the afternoon train, spending longer at their destination.

No SuperPower!

As there is a small WHR100 Event this July featuring Russell and Palmerston on several trains between Dinas and Rhyd Ddu, it appears the F&WHR will not be running its previously annual SuperPower event this September. Nothing is currently advertised for September. However the FR's Bygones Event 7-9/10/22 may feature some events on the south end of the WHR.

F&WHR 14/7/22

Thursday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 19C. The midweek service pattern has become well established with ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The 13:55 Woodland Wanderer was fully booked. Those who missed the chance to travel to Tan-y-bwlch could book tickets on the afternoon Mountain Spirit to Tan-y-bwlch to take advantage of the hop on-hop off fares now available. There were still traffic lights near the Premier Inn entrance causing congestion.

The same three locos have been stuck on trains for a while now. The Mountain Spirit regular haulage David Lloyd George arrived at 10:03 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie had run round well before Blanche arrived in the FR platform at 10:27 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. There was no time to run round before the Mountain Spirit departed so Blanche had to wait until 10:35 for the Fairlie to clear the shunt limit.

No.130 rolled in with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer at 12:57. Blanche was back by 13:11 and shunted its rake to the yard at 13:20 before running round in the yard. Blanche having cleared the FR platform, the Fairlie arrived at 13:37 and Blanche shunted its rake into the WHR platform at 13:46, soon after the Garratt had departed.

At 13:32 Harlech Castle was noted propelling the cherrypicker rake and FR Mess car out of Minffordd Yard. The rake arrived in the WHR loop at 13:48 and departed up the WHR at 14:01. Hopefully the queues caused by the traffic lights did not lead to cars stopped blocking the WHR on Britannia Bridge.

Blanche arrived back in sunshine at 16:10 and departed with the ECS at 16:20 as No.130 rolled in giving the unusual spectacle of trains moving in both the WHR and FR platforms at the same time! The Garratt departed ECS at 16:30. The Fairlie was back at 17:35, ran round at 17:43 and departed in sunshine ECS at 17:49 to close the day.

The midweek service pattern has become established now with ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The morning Woodland Wanderer was fully booked as normal.

The first train of the day was David Lloyd George which arrived in the FR platform at 09:37 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 09:45. Blanche arrived really early into the WHR platform at 10:01 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. The run round was completed by 10:07. Traffic lights outside the Premier Inn were still causing problems with jams on The Cob.

No.130 rolled into the WHR platform at 12:58 with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived back at 13:11 and just 4 minutes later the rake was propelled out onto The Cob before being shunted into the sidings. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:39 just a minute before the Garratt departed! Blanche, which had run round in the meantime, hauled its rake out of the station yard onto The Cob and shunted into the WHR platform as soon as the Garratt had left. The Fairlie ran round at 14:05 for the afternoon Mountain Spirit.

Blanche arrived back at 16:07 and ran round 7 minutes later, departing ECS at 16:17. The Garratt was next, arriving at 16:24, and departing ECS just 5 minutes later! The final working of the day was the returning Fairlie at 17:37. The loco ran round at 17:45 and departed ECS for the depot at 17:50 to close the day.

Welsh COVID warning 13/7/22

Welsh Minister Vaughan Gething has warned that almost 5% of Wales currently has COVID, that's 1 in 20. Hospitals cannot cope with demand for everyday services as so many beds are taken by seriously ill COVID cases, some of who, despite all encouragement are some of the 3.5 million UK residents who have not taken a vaccine. He urges people to take care. See Daily Post story.

F&WHR 12/7/22

Tuesday was forecast to have sunny periods in Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 19C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train).

First up was David Lloyd George at 09:51 with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round 5 minutes later. Blanche arrived at 10:19 with the ECS for the Woodland Wanderer. The round was completed by 10:25 without impacting the Mountain Spirit. Traffic lights outside the Premier Inn were again causing problems with jams on The Cob.

No.130 arrived with the ECS for the Glaslyn Venturer at 13:01. Blanche arrived back from the morning Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform at 13:12 and 8 minutes later was being shunted to the yard to clear the FR platform for the returning morning Mountain Spirit. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:34 and Blanche dragged its rake out onto The Cob awaiting departure of the Garratt at 13:40. The loco then propelled the Woodland Wanderer rake into the now vacant WHR platform. Using the WHR platform in this way allowed the Fairlie's run round at 14:01 to be signalled even though the Woodland Wanderer departed 4 minutes late.

At 16:18 Blanche was running round at 16:18 before departing ECS at 16:20 as No.130 pulled in at 16:21. The Garratt departed ECS at 16:30. The Fairlie arrived back at 17:34 in sunshine, ran round at 17:43 and departed ECS at 17:50 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 11/7/22

Monday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 24C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and the afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The morning Woodland Wanderer was fully booked on departure.

David Lloyd George was first today with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit, arriving in the FR platform at 09:31, almost an hour in advance. Blanche followed at 10:08 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer as the Fairlie ran round. It was in good time to run round before the Mountain Spirit departed. Work was underway on The Cob by the Premier Inn access with traffic control leading to congestion on The Cob at times. The sky became overcast by midday which was surprisingly in contradiction to the weather forecast.

At 12:30 No.87 rolled in with the ECS for the 13:40 Glaslyn Venturer. Blanche arrived back at 13:06 and was subsequently prepared for the 13:55 departure. At 13:13 this was propelled out onto The Cob and dragged back into the yard to clear the FR platform for the returning Mountain Spirit. This complicated shunt is necessary as the Glaslyn Venturer leaves at 13:40, some 5 minutes after the platform is required by the booked arrival at 13:35 of the returning Mountain Spirit. Two operational methods are used. Either the 13:55 shunts out onto The Cob and then back into the WHR platform or the end of the FR platform which is already occupied by the Mountain Spirit.

Workers were maintaining the signals again from a moveable platform. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:39 while Blanche ran round in the yard just a minute before the WHR platform became clear. Blanche shunted out to the signal box at 13:48 and appeared to be about to set back into the FR platform when the signal came out of his box to advice the driver to proceed onto The Cob and shunt back into the WHR platform. Passengers were loading at 13:51 ready for the 13:55 departure. However the guard had to go round and lock all the off side doors he had opened in preparation for a departure from the FR platform! The train left a couple of minutes late as a result. The Fairlie ran round at 14:14 after Blanche had departed.

Blanche returned at 16:10 and ran round shortly afterwards at 16:13, returning ECS to the depot at 16:17. No.130 rolled in at 16:22 having undertaken a loco swop with the Gelert Explorer at Beddgelert. The Garratt departed with the ECS promptly at 16:28. Last train of the day was the Fairlie which returned at 17:36. The loco ran round at 17:55 after being coaled and watered and departed with the ECS at 18:01 to close the day.

Summer Steam surfeit 17-19/7/22

The Railway Touring Company is running two steam hauled railtours to North Wales in the next several days. On Sunday 17/7/22 the North Wales Coast Express is running steam hauled from Liverpool to Holyhead with a Llandudno connection by service train. The train will lay over in Holyhead from 15:24-18:04 in Holyhead for servicing. This train usually takes on water at Llandudno Junction. On Tuesday 19/7/22 the Welsh Mountaineer runs Preston-Blaenau Ffestiniog steam hauled, taking water at Frodsham, and with Chester as its last pick up point. It will run round and take water at Llandudno Junction before a lay over in Blaenau Ffestiniog from 1310-1600. There does not appear to be any special train for the travellers to try the FR to Tan-y-bwlch and back but the afternoon Mountain Spirit will arrive while the excursion is present. See RTC website for details.

Cae Pawb crossing

NR operates Cae Pawb crossing in conjunction with the F&WHR who send an electronic request to cross the Cambrian Coast line. This is permitted when the section Harlech to Porthmadog is clear or when a train has cleared the crossing towards Harlech. However, when the Machynlleth ERTMS signalling centre is closed e.g. on Boxing Day, through trains on the WHR cannot operate. With recent strike action the F&WHR were grateful to the striking signallers for leaving Cae Pawb Crossing set to allow WHR trains to cross all day during the strike days, thus allowing the Glaslyn Venturer, the Snowdonia Star and The Harbourmaster to run.

F&WHR 10/7/22

Sunday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 21C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FOUR trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, one Mountain Spirit and the Glaslyn Venturer train).

No.87 was first today arriving at 09:19 with the ECS for the 10:15 Glaslyn Venturer. David Lloyd George was next with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit, arriving in the FR platform at 09:53. Blanche was waiting at the Home signal with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer for the Glaslyn Venturer to depart and free up the WHR platform. It was in good time to run round before the Mountain Spirit departed.

The Garratt arrived back at 12:53 and waited for a path back to the deport as only one run was booked today. Blanche arrived back at 13:09 which allowed the Garratt to depart ECS for the depot 1 minute later. The Fairlie arrived back at 13:37 and went to coal and water at 13:42 before leaving ECS at 14:11 after the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer had cleared The Cob. Blanche arrived back at 16:07 and ran round promptly before departing ECS at 16:17 to close the day.

F&WHR 9/7/22

Saturday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog and maximum temperatures of 20C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and The Harbourmaster train).

First up today was No.87 arriving at 09:12 with the ECS for the 09:40 Harbourmaster service. A working platform was wheeled down the platform to allow attention to signals. David Lloyd George was next with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit, arriving in the FR platform at 09:47. Blanche arrived at 10:24 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer and was too late to run round until after the Fairlie's departure.

No.130 arrived at 12:13 and the loco ran round by 12:47. Blanche departed ECS at 16:27. At 16:48 No.87 took the ECS back to the depot. The Fairlie arrived back at 17:41 and finally left ECS 18:00 to close the day.

Russell test train 9/7/22

Russell hauled a heritage test train to Beddgelert on 9/7/22 during the evening after WHR traffic had ceased. This was to test the train out on the 1 in 40 on the approaches to Beddgelert. The gradients between Dinas and South Snowdon (aka Rhyd Ddu) where the WHR 100 Event will take place are much easier than this. The rake consisted of the replica Pickering Brake Van No.8 (PRISM compliant), Buffet Car No.10, replica Ashbury Corridor No.9 and semi-Open Gladstone Car No.8. This is thought to represent the train that will be used on 30-31/7/22 WHR 100 Event.

The train crossed over at Pen-y-Mount onto WHR metals at 17:20. The opportunity was taken to test the dual braked van's braking on the 1 in 40. The train stopped at Bryn-y-felin, one of the tighter curves on the railway, to check the loco ran through the curve smoothly and to photo the train. This curve was relaid last winter after a derailment at Sheepfold Cutting nearby just before Xmas. The train arrived at Beddgelert at 18:20 and took water from the water crane before running round. Emma hauled the train through the crossover onto WHHR metals at 20:30 to complete the test run.

This southerly view (9/7/22) shows Russell taking the crossover at Pen-y-Mount to join the WHR main line from the WHHR. The loco is hauling four coaches forming a heritage rake to trial on the 1 in 40 in the Aberglaslyn Pass on its way to Beddgelert. On return the train stopped at Pont Croesor to pick up air braked diesel Emma as pilot back to Pen-y-Mount. Emma hauled the train through the crossover onto WHHR metals at 20:30 to complete the test run. It appears that an air braked rescue engine will be essential for the WHR 100 Event. Some 30 photos of the test run, which was carried out in excellent lighting conditions, are available on Roger Dimmick's Facebook page. All the images are time-stamped and some have appeared on official F&WHR web pages so far.

F&WHR 8/7/22

Friday was forecast to be an improving day in Porthmadog with sunshine later and maximum temperatures of 18C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and The Harbourmaster train). The two through WHR trains will run Friday and Saturday through the Summer timetable.

First up today was No.87 arriving at 09:00 with the ECS for the 09:40 Harbourmaster service. David Lloyd George was next with the ECS for the 10:30 Mountain Spirit, arriving in the FR platform at 09:39. It's been a few week's now since Merddin Emrys had a turn. Blanche arrived at 10:06 with the ECS for the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer and was early enough to run round straight away without impacting the Fairlie's departure.

No.130 arrived at 12:22 with the Snowdonia Star and at 12:30 it ran to the refuelling point Later the Garratt was running round at Porthmadog at 13:00 ready for the return working in rather dull conditions considering the forecast. Blanche arrived at 13:08 and at 13:15 shunted its rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for the Fairlie, which arrived at 13:37. At 13:42 Blanche propelled its rake back into the FR platform before the Fairlie had run round at 14:08.

Towards the end of the afternoon Blanche was first back at 16:08 in sunshine. The run round came at 16:15 and the ECS departed at 16:21. No.87 was back at 16:32 and departed ECS at 16:39. The final move of the day came with the return of the Fairlie at 17:35. The loco departed ECS at 17:51 to close the day.

WHR 100 event tickets on sale 8/7/22

Tickets for the WHR 100 event were on sale from Friday 8/7/22. The £60 Day Ranger ticket (child £30) for Saturday or Sunday is bookable on line or from the booking office by phone. The hope is that passengers will split their journeys between Russell and Palmerston so that everyone who wants a ride behind Russell to Rhyd Ddu can have one. However there are, a little surprisingly, only two Russell hauled trains on each day and no Garratt shuttle to catch the first Russell run!

The train graphs for Saturday and Sunday are now available. Note the lack of trains between Beddgelert and Rhyd Ddu which will be remedied in next year's event. The single trip shown on Sunday is the ECS return of Russell to the WHHR.

F&WHR 7/7/22

Thursday was forecast to be a sunny day in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 21C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and one afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was sold out well before departure as was the 10:30 Mountain Spirit. It seems if the Woodland Wanderer is fully booked then those on a budget can book the Mountain Spirit to Tan-y-bwlch and have an even longer break there or catch the returning 10:55 if there is room.

First up was David Lloyd George with the 10:30 Mountain Spirit followed by Blanche on the Woodland Wanderer at 10:13 which was early enough to run round before the Fairlie departed. The appearance of Blanche made it obvious it had not been outstabled at Dinas for the new TThO Cwellyn Summer dated service expected to begin 26/7/22 to coincide with the school holidays (see below).

No.87 arrived at 12:46 into the WHR platform. Blanche returned at 13:08 into the FR platform After the arrival of the Fairlie at 13:36 Blanche was running round in the station yard and then unusually propelled its train back into the FR platform rather than wait for the departing Glaslyn Venturer to clear the WHR platform at 13:40. This blocked the Fairlie's run round for the 14:30 departure until after it had left but there was plenty of time for the run round. When the FR had only one platform at Porthmadog it often used to run trains from the end of the platform like this in advance of a later train on the same platform. The Fairlie eventually ran round at 14:05.

Blanche arrived back first at 16:10 and departed ECS at 16:23. No.87 was back second at 16:16 and departed ECS at 16:35. The final movement was the Fairlie which arrived back at 17:40 and ran round at 17:52 departing at 17:54 to close the day's activities.

The new Cwellyn Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu service from 28/7/22

The new Cwellyn service to run Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu begins on 28/7/22 (two weeks later than expected) and misses the first weeks of the school holiday peak period. It offers relatively cheap fares aimed at boosting ridership from Caernarfon. The service will operate TThO until 1/9/22 when the school summer holidays end and may operate additional days according to demand.

Only one train a day is envisaged initially, a 12:30 from Caernarfon arriving in Rhyd Ddu roughly an hour later. There is space in the timetable for two with use of passing loops, so this is very much a toe in the water to attract the family market with lower fare and shorter journeys. It is marketed similarly to the Woodland Wanderer on the FR with fares of £35 return (children/dogs £2) compared with fares of £25 on the Woodland Wanderer. Hampers can be pre-ordered as with the Gelert Explorer and Snowdonia Star.

The train runs 30 minutes after The Gelert Explorer and returns from Rhyd Ddu after a short 30 minute stop to run round and water, hours before the Gelert Explorer returns. This means the trains do not have to pass each other anywhere. There is some confusion about timings though as the website suggest it is a 3 hour journey but advises a return time of 15:00 not 15:30, which would match the 3 hour journey time stated! Additional days such as Wednesdays may be added according to demand. See F&WHR website for full Cwellyn details.

WAG responds to Starmer's controversial EU stance

With Wales losing EU grants that supported Heritage Railways (including the reconstruction of the WHR) after BREXIT and inadequate promised replacement grants coming from the UK government, there is confusion in WAG about Starmer's recent statement on the issue. The Daily Post has an analysis of how Labour's BREXIT policy is causing concern in Wales. WAG has also reacted to the resignation of Boris Johnson as PM as reported in the Daily Post and the challenges this poses for Wales.

F&WHR 6/7/22

Wednesday was forecast to be a cloudy day in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 19C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and one afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was sold out well before departure.

The first loco was a surprise as a quarry Hunslet believed to be Hugh Napier came across The Cob light engine at 09:48 and departed up the WHR at 09:57. This could be the loco giving footplate rides at Dinas during the WHR 100 Event (see below) at the end of the month. Next out was David Lloyd George at 10:01 which arrived in the FR platform, followed by Lyd at 10:16 in the WHR platform. There was enough time for Lyd to run round before the Mountain Spirit departed. No.87 pulled in at 12:47 and Lyd arrived shortly after at 13:07. Lyd shunted the rake to the yard at 13:18 to clear the FR platform for the returning Fairlie and, after the Garratt departed, shunted the afternoon Woodland Wanderer to the WHR platform at 13:48 in time for the 13:55 departure.

The final movement of the day was the returning Fairlie which ran round at 17:45 and departed ECS at 17:49.

WHR 100 Event

Details have emerged about the WHR 100 Event including timetables and train graphs. Tickets will be available from Friday 8/7/22. There is no detail about Russell's arrival or any air-brake fitted rescue thunderbirds but the train will return to Pen-y-Mount on Sunday leaving Dinas at 16:40 and giving the only opportunity to see it in the Beddgelert Forest section as it will only run between Dinas and Rhyd Ddu.

The WHHR stock is unspecified but Russell's train, the X set, will likely consist of up to four coaches including replica Pickering brake, the Gladstone Car and other coaches of the period like the Buffet Car. Palmerston will also be doing two trips each day with the V set consisting of Van 10, No.23 (the WHR coach) and No.24 (the replica NWNGR coach). Russell's train is set to stop at all the NWNGR stations including Betws Garmon and Snowdon Ranger. On Saturday evening there will be an extra train from Dinas to Waunfawr which will make run pasts at Tryfan Junction. Day Rover ticket holders may make an additional purchase of £20 for the evening run-past special at Tryfan Junction (17:32 from Dinas) which will stop there in both directions. This is limited to 50 seats.

Day Rover tickets are priced at £60 (child £30) and cover travel on the Caernarfon shuttle (NG16 hauled), travel on the Russell/Palmerston shuttles, entry to Dinas and a 20% discount of WHHR trains at Porthmadog. A free Whiteways coach with limited seating (25 seats) will be provided to take people ahead of the train to photo it at Waunfawr, Plas-y-nant and Rhyd Ddu.

For those not purchasing a Day Rover entry to Dinas is £5 (children free) where there is limited disabled parking. There will be a catering van and a real ale bar as well as model railways and a photo display to view. An unnamed loco will be offering footplate rides at Dinas.

No.134 update

No.134's boiler was expected back from the repairer's factory LMS, Loughborough at the end of July or early August. The new ashpan made by Brunswick Ironworks of Caernarfon has gone to Loughborough to be trial fitted to the boiler after some air holes were cut. The side rods have gone on the loco for the last time after attention to bearings. Work is also underway on the tender and the bearings have been made waterproof. The original tank used to extend down over the bearings but the new tank sits on the frame with no lower extensions. Two large headlights have been acquired from California and will have powerful LEDs fitted.

Welsh Covid advice update 6/7/22

With COVID increasing again in Wales, Wales' Chief Medical Officer has advised that people should wear masks in crowded indoor place, which could include on trains. See Daily Post report.

F&WHR 5/7/22

Tuesday was forecast to be a day improving weather in Porthmadog after a drizzly start with maximum temperatures of 17C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and one afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train).

The first train noted was David Lloyd George on the Mountain Spirit that rolled in ECS at 09:55 followed by Lyd on the Woodland Wanderer ECS at 10:18.  Lyd was able to quickly run round at 10:23 before the Fairlie departed at 10:30. Lyd was back at 12:05. This train seems to have been retimed to arrive 15 mins earlier to ease the run round congestion and ensure the 13:55 gets away on time. No.87 arrived ECS at 12:30. Lyd shunted the rake to the yard to clear the FR platform for the returning Mountain Spirit and then ran round at 13:32. The Fairlie came back at 13:36 and the Garratt departed 5 minutes later clearing the way for Lyd to propel the 13:55 into the WHR platform.

Lyd returned at 16:06 and quickly ran round to depart ECS 11 minutes. Next back was No.87 at 16:24 which departed ECS 6 minutes later. The final working of the day saw the Fairlie return at 17:36 and depart ECS 14 minutes later to close the day.

Traffic report Spring 2022

Traffic on the railway was lighter than envisaged in April and May with both the Bank Holiday periods seeing less traffic than expected. This might be due to inflation and families on limited budgets looking for cheaper holiday options and rising petrol/diesel prices. The Woodland Wanderer was therefore popular as a cheaper option. June however saw an upturn in traffic though at no time did the Woodland Wanderer require the full five trains available. One thing limiting the F&WHR's ability to run trains has been the availability of staff for the first time, sometimes affected by the petrol cost of getting to the railway. This has also affected hospitality across North Wales as BREXIT has prevented the free flow of EU workers who have until recent years taken up many seasonal jobs in tourist industries.

The WHR presents a conundrum for the F&WHR as passenger numbers have been lower than expected. One reason might be that the long days out offered by the Gelert Explorer and Snowdonia Star services are more suited to older couples rather than families with young children and the price of tickets. Another reason might be lack of advertising to North Wales Coast venues. There use to be a F&WHR timetable leaflet stocked in most hotels and Tourist Information Offices but this year there is no timetable as such. The plan is to offer a small train/small engine midweek service at lower cost that might appeal to families. The third set normally allocated but never used for the Woodland Wanderer could be used. This could operate once or twice a day with a 2 hour trip Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu and back stopping just to water and run round at Rhyd Ddu like the Santa Specials which were very popular with families. It would be possible to run such a service twice a day if there was demand with departures about 10:00 or 10:30 and 13:30-14:00 passing the Gelert Explorer at intermediate loops. It is likely such trains would run TWThO and start in mid-July to coincide with the school summer holidays and continue until 2/9/22 when the Autumn timetable starts.

Hop on-Hop off fares have been available since May and will continue to be available to the general public when space is available. It seems one coach is set aside for this on each train. The delayed start of this facility was due to the need to provide guards with credit card machines as fewer people carry cash these days. The General Manager says the railway has faced difficult times, even one shipment of coal via Ireland was delayed by the P&O debacle! The F&WHR is in a strong financial position and hopes to be on budget this year. A new 10 year plan is envisaged.

WAG holiday proposals may further damage heritage railways

WAG is considering shortening the school summer holidays to 4 weeks putting it at odds with the holiday period in England and undermining the F&WHR plans for a Summer Peak service. Consultations are still underway but the idea is to increase the Xmas Holiday, a period when the F&WHR does not run many services and finds it difficult to attract volunteer staff as well as the weather sometimes being unsuitable for holidays. The issue is out for consultation. See Daily Post story.

North Wales shortlisted for Small Modular Reactor factory

With both Trawsfynydd and Wylfa cited as locations for small modular nuclear reactors, Gateway Industrial estate at Deeside has been short listed by Rolls Royce as a possibly factory for its SMRs. The site is also earmarked for a new station on the Borderlands Line, due to see Class 230s introduced later this year. A commitment is required from the Government this year if the first SMR is to available in 2029 as planned. See Daily Post story.

F&WHR 4/7/22

Monday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 17C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and one afternoon Glaslyn Venturer train). The 10:55 Woodland Wanderer was fully booked by 09:00. The timetable has now switched to a regular pattern with Woodland Wanderer (2-5 services) and Mountain Spirit (1-2 services) on the FR every day and Gelert Explorer (1 service) and Glaslyn Venturer (1-2 services) FSX on the WHR. The WHR services are extended to form through trains (the Harbourmaster and Snowdonia Star) FSO.

The first train of the day was hauled by David Lloyd George with the 10:30 Mountain Spirit which arrived at 09:51 in the FR platform. This was followed by Lyd at 10:19 with the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer in the WHR platform. Finally No.87 appeared at 12:41 with the 13:40 Glaslyn Venturer. Lyd was back early at 13:07 and propelled the rake onto The Cob before dragging it back into the sidings.

It was a busy hour with the Fairlie arriving into the FR platform at 13.37 and No.87 departing at 13:40. As soon as the Garratt had departed, Lyd, which had run round by now, dragged its rake out onto The Cob and propelled it into the WHR platform, departing on the afternoon train at 13:55. The Fairlie ran round and departed at 14:30 with the afternoon Mountain Spirit.

At 16:14 Lyd was back with the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer and minutes later at 16:25 the Garratt pulled in. Lyd ran round and departed at 16.26 with the ECS and at 16:37 the Garratt followed likewise. The final movements of the day came at 17:35 when the Fairlie returned with the Mountain Spirit. After a swift run round the rake departed ECS at 17:52 back to Boston Lodge to close the day's activities.

Summer timetable changes 4/7/22

The General Manager has listened to members and supporters and there will be a Summer Service running between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu with cheaper tickets than the Gelert Explorer designed to attract families as well as older couples and operating mid-week throughout the summer (possibly TWThO see suggested timetable above). This will be a small engine/small train operation and Blanche was seen recently heading to Dinas with four coaches on 29/6/22, presumably for this service. It would be possible to have two trips a day if timed to pass at Waunfawr/Rhyd Ddu or Dinas.

In other timetable changes the Woodland Wanderer will be cut back to a maximum of four trains a day. It is currently running two trains a day and a maximum of three have operated this year out of five in the timetable. Other services will stay as they are over the Summer period until 2/9/22 when the Autumn timetable will be introduced. The F&WHR reserves the right to adjust trains according to demand but it is currently planned to offer two Mountain Spirit trains a day except for Sundays when only the morning service will run as many people travel back home on Sunday afternoons.

These changes are not yet showing on the F&WHR's bookings system.

Tourist tax will cut visitor numbers

A tax on AirB&B and second homes is likely to cut visitors to North Wales, already down significantly as petrol and diesel approach £2.00 a litre. However with all the well publicised difficultly caused by BREXIT in flying overseas and the BREXIT roaming fares debacle, the number of people opting for staycations may increase. See Daily Post story.

F&WHR 3/7/22

Sunday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 15C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Gelert Explorer) but FOUR trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, one Mountain Spirit and one Glaslyn Venturer train).

Criccieth Castle headed up the line light engine passing Tan-y-bwlch at 09:29 either to collect an ECS from Glan-y-pwll or in response to some problem being reported (see delays later in day below)? After withdrawing the token, the loco left within a minute in response to the situation.

This westerly view (2/7/22) shows Criccieth Castle passing Tan-y-bwlch light engine presumably to investigate a problem reported further up the line as FR trains were subsequently delayed. It was peak hour 10-11am at Porthmadog with No.87 ready coupled to the Glaslyn Venturer due off at 10:15 (back to a morning only departure!). David Lloyd George was hauling the 10:30 Mountain Spirit and the rake for the Woodland Wanderer was about to arrive from Boston Lodge as soon as the Garratt vacated the WHR platform. It proved to be an unusual morning with Lyd arriving a lot later than normal at 10:31 with the Fairlie still present in the FR platform. The problem must lie between Tan-y-bwlch and Blaenau Ffestiniog as Criccieth Castle had passed there earlier going towards Dduallt. The Mountain Spirit eventually departed some 41 minutes late at 11:11, leading to pathing problems and a reaction with the Woodland Wanderer, also delayed 40 minutes, departing at 11:35.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch Criccieth Castle was noted returning, presumably from Glan-y-pwll, passing at 11:34, with a couple of coaches including a brake coach No.10 and a bowsider possibly for the WHR 100 event (of which details have still been released!). The train waited for the Mountain Spirit to pass, which was in section and arrived at 11:48 (due 11:05). The ECS then had to wait for the following delayed Woodland Wanderer to arrive at 12:15  before departed at 12:20 and passing Minffordd at 12:44. At 12:50 the loco was noted propelling its ECS into Boston Lodge Carriage Shed.

No.87 was back by 12:56, the only train from Porthmadog to run on time today. Minutes later the ECS was shunted to the station yard at 13:03, itself an unusual move as normally no coaching stock is left overnight in the station anymore. The loco then went light engine to the depot at 13:13.

Lyd returned to Porthmadog with the delayed morning Woodland Wanderer arriving at 13:57, after its planned departure time on the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. The Fairlie followed at 14:19 allowing the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer to run round an depart at 14:26 (31 minutes late). The Fairlie then ran round and departed ECS to the depot at 14:57. A track inspection of the crossover took place at Minffordd after the Woodland Wanderer passed. Lyd arrived back at 16:41 with the final working of the day 31 minutes late and the loco refuelled and watered before running round and departing ECS back to the depot at 17:01 to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 2/7/22

Saturday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 15C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but FIVE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer, two Mountain Spirit and one Harbourmaster train).

The first movement was Harlech Castle passing through Tan-y-bwlch with a PW train about 08:00. No.87 hauled the 09:40 Harbourmaster. The procedure for crossing Britannia Bridge is quite involved. Rather than use the signalbox controls, the Britannia Bridge crossing lights sequence is initiated by the engine driver who uses the token in a switchbox attached to the lamp post next to where the loco normally stands. After getting the right away from the guard, the driver inserts the token and then the road lights and klaxon start before finally after clearing the railway signal a minute later allowing traffic to clear the crossing and approaching vehicles to come to a stop.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch Moelwyn arrived hauling the Mess coach and a group of volunteers at 09:34. The train departed towards Dduallt 5 minutes later. Next to depart Porthmadog was David Lloyd George on the 10:30 Mountain Spirit and thirdly Lyd on the 10:55 Woodland Wanderer from the WHR platform as usual.

Up at Tan-y-bwlch, Moelwyn returned at 13:40 and headed towards Minffordd with the FR Mess Car. Harlech Castle returned from the Dduallt direction with a brake van at 1725 before shunting into the sidings at 17:30. It appears the loco was locked in the sidings for the night maybe for use on Sunday. Towards the end of the day the Fairlie was back in Porthmadog with the afternoon Mountain Spirit working and had run round by 17:40 and departed ECS for the depot to close the day.

F&WHR 1/7/22

Friday was forecast to be a day of sunny periods in Porthmadog with maximum temperatures of 15C. There was ONE train from Caernarfon (the Snowdonia Star) but THREE trains from Porthmadog (two Woodland Wanderer and one Harbourmaster train). Next Friday the Mountain Spirit will return along with the through trains on the WHR.

No.87 left with The Harbourmaster at 09:40 to start the day and at 10:30 Lyd was running round in the FR platform preparing the 10:55 Woodland WandererNo.130 returned to Caernarfon on the Snowdonia Star departing Porthmadog at 14:15 after Lyd departed on the 13:55 Woodland Wanderer. Last move of the day came at 16:48 when No.87 returned the Harbourmaster ECS to the depot in the rain.

WHR 100 Event??

The end of June has come and gone and the details promised by the end of June about the WHR 100 event have not been released. Society Members and the general public are confused as to what is happening on the weekend of 30-31/7/22 and need to know before making plans to visit the F&WHR and booking accommodation!

All that can be said for certain is that a train of skips went to Pen-y-Mount on 26/6/22. For photos see the WHRS page. Russell was on test on the WHHR for the first time since 2019 on 29/6/22 and on the same day Blanche headed north with four coaches and has not been seen again!
