Gowrie Project 29/11/19

Gowrie was a single Fairlie that was built by Hunslet in 1908 for the NWNGR. It was said to have had unsatisfactory performance on the NWNGR and may have been sold in 1918. A group of engineers have formed a Trust to re-creating Gowrie, the final loco ordered for the NWNGR and last recorded in 1931 before it is believed to have been scrapped. The Gowrie Locomotive Trust application to the Charities Commission has been successful and they are now a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This means they are now able to take advantage of such benefits as Gift Aid and potential grant applications. A Gowrie website gives more detail.

The loco will be an entirely new build and will be fitted with both air and vacuum brakes to facilitate running on both Welsh Highlands, in addition to several other lines. The construction will be handled by the team of volunteers that restored Hunslet Edward Sholto, the MRT's Hudswell Clarke No.1238, and the restoration of WD Hunslet No.1215 of 1916. The project was officially launched at the groups combined model railway show and fundraising event "Mainly Narrow Gauge", held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on the 28/4/18.

Currently work is underway on patterns, casting and frames. Many in the WHR would prefer to see single Fairlie Moel Tryfan rebuilt but cannot complain as Gowrie is a similar type of loco if less familiar having apparently only operated on the NWNGR for 10 years. See Gowrie Facebook page.

Final Orange timetable train of 2019 28/11/19

Thursday 28/11/19 saw the final Orange timetable train of the year. Taliesin has been hauling the Hafod-y-llyn trains SWTO. This service resumes in 2020 MTFX from 26/2/20. In the meantime Santa Specials will operate SSuO and possibly in snowy conditions at Rhyd Ddu for the three weekends until 22/12/19.

K1 to go to Statfold Barn Railway 27/11/19

As suggested in this column back in October the F&WHR has announced that K1, the pioneer Garratt type loco is to move from Dinas. The loco has been partially dismantled for a 10 year overhaul in 2014 including re-tubing and bogie maintenance. However with the F&WHR trying to ensure 2 Garratts are completed this year and running two in service, there has been no time to progress K1.

The loco is going to the Statfold Barn Railway where cosmetic restoration and reassembly will occur. See Inside Motion press release. The loco might return to Dinas in 4 year's time and be restored to traffic if time allows.

Boston Lodge to construct Pickering brake coach for WHHR 26/11/19

In a further sign of the good relationships that have flowered recently between the two railways, t he WHHR has commissioned a replica Pickering Brake coach from the F&WHR Boston lodge Carriage Works. This will allow the WHHR to complete the prototypical heritage rake seen in so many photos of the old WHR. In a further cooperative move the coach will be equipped with both air and vacuum brakes allowing it to be used on the WHR's main line. The coach will be built to the original WHR loading gauge and will not replicate the cut down versions used on the FR in the 1930s period. A generous sponsor has made the replica possible. Although when built in 1907 the two Pickering brakes coaches were originally numbered Nos.4/5, they became Nos.8/9 under the FR's tenancy before disposal in 1942 by auction. It is possible that one of these original numbers might be used on the new vehicle, on which work has already started. The coach is due to be outshopped in 2021 and will feature a disabled person space. Currently the WHHR is using an ex-VoR brakevan which appeared in BR blue in recent years.

The full Press Release:

Pickering Brake for Welsh Highland Railway

The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway at Porthmadog has let a contract with the Festiniog Railway Company for the construction of a replica Pickering Brake Composite Coach.

The original Welsh Highland Railway had two Brake Composite Coaches that were built for the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway in 1907 by R.Y.Pickering of Wishaw, Lanarkshire.   One or other of these coaches appears in almost every photograph of an original Welsh Highland train, but sadly they were auctioned off and were lost when the original railway was scrapped in 1942.

It has long been an ambition of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway to have a replica of one of these iconic coaches to provide a brake coach for our heritage train and now thanks to a generous sponsor that dream will be realised.

As the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway’s existing volunteer resources are fully committed to other projects the construction of the replica has been contracted out and the Festiniog Railway Company are the successful bidder.

The interior of the coach will be adapted to incorporate a wheelchair accessible compartment. The coach will be fitted with air and vacuum brakes to allow it to work with Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railway locomotives and carriages and will be at full height (the original coaches were cut down in 1924 to fit the Festiniog Railway loading gauge).

Welsh Highland Heritage Railway Chairman Graham Farr said “I’m delighted that we will be able to add a Pickering Brake to our train of restored and replica coaches to be pulled by our locomotives Russell or 590.  I’d like to personally thank the sponsor for his generosity in making this a reality”

Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways General Manager Paul Lewin said “We are absolutely delighted to be the selected contractor for this carriage. It is very important for Welsh Highland Heritage in general. This year we have really enjoyed working with the team at Gelert's Farm to deliver events with Russell on the Welsh Highland. This project is the icing on the cake and is a great way to round off 2019.”

Work has already started on the construction of the coach and completion is planned for 2021.

The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway’s existing heritage train includes three restored original carriages, No. 8 the Gladstone Car, so called because it was once used by Prime Minister William Gladstone, No. 10 the world’s first narrow gauge Buffet Car, and No. 42 a toastrack coach, and a replica of No.9 a Corridor Coach.   These are regularly hauled by the only surviving steam locomotive from the original line ‘Russell’ Hunslet 2-6-2T works number 901 of 1906.

Mountaineer II project launched at Warley show 24/11/19

The construction of a new loco to the original 1863 design of an FR England engine with side tanks and no cab was launched at the Warley Show at the National Exhibition Centre on 24/11/19. The boiler has already been ordered from Israel Newton and North Bay Engineering works are putting it together. It is hoped to have the loco complete by 2023. See Mountaineer website for full details.

Progress can be followed at the 1863 Mountaineer Facebook page where the last tube was expanded in the boiler on 23/3/20.<

Caernarfon Vandal attack 22/11/19 and 28/11/19

Caernarfon station's new glass panel exterior has received shattering blows, possibly from a sledgehammer. It was always feared that the expensive frontage might suffer from the unwanted attentions of the areas less desirable residents. The Police and the F&WHR will pursue the individuals concerned using extensive CCT records to recover the estimated £5,000+ damage. The damage was done overnight by vandals on 22/11 and 28/11/19. See North Wales Chronicle report for full details.

James Spooner update 20/11/19

Work on the new Fairlie James Spooner is making good progress. The Boston Lodge designed boiler has been under construction for more than two years at Powys Steel Fabrications and the sub-assemblies of the boiler were brought to Boston Lodge in October and promptly welded together in the last month. In late November Boston Lodge staff were about to complete the riveting of the foundation ring and tubing the boiler. A hydraulic test in expected early in the New Year. The cradle frame which carries the boiler was fabricated over the course of the last year and more recently the final parts including the reversing gear and brake rigging have been completed. The frame which is mounted on the 1986 bogies last in service under withdrawn locomotive ‘Earl of Merioneth’ is now ready to accept the completed boiler.

This Boston Lodge view (20/11/19) shows the recently completed boiler for James Spooner. The loco maybe completed in 2020 given uninterrupted progress over Winter/Spring. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is copyright Ian Hartill (Moelwyn Tunnel Project Manager F&WHR) and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

The superstructure for the locomotive has been designed by a volunteer using modern CAD software. At the end of November some 3.5 tonnes of steel profile were scheduled for delivery at Boston Lodge. The space has been cleared ready for the major fabrication exercise that will see the new locomotive quickly taking shape. In addition to all this work the machine shop has been busy building the myriad of components needed. For example, the regulator ‘J’ pipes were on the horizontal borer at the same time as hand rail knobs were being produced on the neighbouring lathes. Meanwhile the stove pipe chimney castings are weathering out in the yard awaiting the attentions of the Boston Lodge team.

It is hoped that the locomotive will see service in 2020 but much depends on the ability of the team to keep the attention on the new locomotive whilst at the same time keep the extensive operating fleet in working order. Next year will see the 150th anniversary of the trials of the first Ffestiniog Fairlie Little Wonder therefore it seems fitting that the works is fully taken up with the Fairlies at this time. It is possible the loco could be launched at the 'Fairlie Eventful' event 19-21/6/20 given sufficient progress or at least be on show at the event.

Welsh Pony progress 20/11/19

Back in 2013 the Ffestiniog Railway Company announced the intention to restore Welsh Pony back to traffic. The loco originally built in 1867 has been heavily overhauled and completely rebuilt many times and at withdrawal in 1940 was carrying a life expired third boiler and very tired second set of main frames. Always earmarked to be the next in the queue in the 50’s and 60’s the loco never quite made it to the front of the queue, and in the 1980’s ended up being plinthed outside the Harbour Station at Porthmadog (like Princess, which for a while around 1970 was at the FR's LNWR 'Stesion Fein' site) until needing to be removed for construction of the WHR.

For many years the company said they has no plans for return to traffic preferring to keep it as a museum piece in its withdrawn condition. The loco did not fare well outside on a plinth, being attacked by the salty sea air. After removal from the plinth the loco was frequently found left out in the open due to limited shed space. Hardly fitting accommodation for a locomotive original to the line.

Dismantling of the loco took place during the celebration of 150 years of steam on the FR in 2013 and now, some six years, later the end of the restoration is in sight. Upon dismantling the enormity of the task became apparent with many wheelbarrows of rust and dust simply falling off the loco as parts were removed. It was hoped that one of three major components, the boiler, frames or cylinders would be reusable. Regrettably all were well beyond restoration and have been stored for future display.

New frames, cylinders and a boiler were constructed early on in the project. Additionally, a replica tender was built and the original paired with unrestored sister locomotive Princess. This additional work meant the funds originally raised for the project were exhausted. After several years pause as further funds were raised it was found rather difficult to find space and manpower to continue the work on the engine. Even as recently as the summer of 2018 there were problems in this respect. A planned window of three months in the works was stymied when a Permanent Way Department diesel suffered a major failure and took the place of Welsh Pony in the workshop. Now, with the help of a volunteer team, good progress on Welsh Pony is being made once again.

This Boston Lodge view (20/11/19) shows Welsh Pony with its new boiler, stainless steel smokebox and frames. Criccieth Castle is also in the works for attention. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to see full size (where available). This image is courtesy F&WHR and was taken on a digital camera. Image post processed and displayed at 96dpi.

New rods for the locomotive have been completed and fitted in the last month and polished in the last week ready for final fitting. The drag boxes and footplate framing have advanced well and the works paid staff have fitted the new stainless steel smokebox. Main steam pipes have been restored and the boiler cladding is being fitted up. There is a new chimney on hand along with a smokebox door. The previously restored saddle tank dating back over a hundred years will be given some extra fettling shortly ahead of test fitting in December.

A number of original fittings have been returned to the loco which had been stored in a safe place. In a golden find a pair of clacks dating back to 1903 were found in a heritage store. These heavy fittings had been removed from one of the original FR locos at some stage many years ago. It was expected that new clacks would be needed and indeed patterns were made. No one was aware that these clacks existed. Their purpose unknown they had migrated to the very back of a deep shelf. They were only revealed by chance when another item was moved for photography and they were spotted by someone who instantly recognised them. Restored within weeks and fitted with new valve heads they are now fitted to the loco ready for the next period in service.

Whilst the F&WHR can never be fully certain of what other higher priority demands will be made on the workshops it is hoped that Welsh Pony will be completed in 2020. The loco has now spent some eighty years awaiting its next turn in service, some eight years longer than the 72 years it was in traffic originally. The loco will be out shopped for testing in the deep plum livery carried by the Ffestiniog heritage carriages but once proven will be painted in green livery as a tribute to Allan Garraway the first General Manager of the restored Ffestiniog Railway. Allan made the first donation to start the fund to restore the locomotive in 2013.

NG15 No.134 progress 16-17/11/19

There was one main job to do this month, and that was to assemble all the suspension. Over the last few months a number of pins and cotters had been made and each time the team tried a trial assembly there was always something else that was needed, was not quite right or could be improve upon. This month however, it was not a 'dry-run' but the full assembly, with everything being well greased as volunteers assembled it all. This is another major step towards the re-wheeling due in the Spring. There are now just two pins that are in need of hardening and these will be fitted next month.

Volunteers then concentrated on some of the other smaller bits and pieces, painting a number of items and touching up paint where it had been damaged, as well as modifying some of the pipework fittings. There was more progress with the running plate. The team had received the rolled sections this month, and whilst one had an error they were able to drop the other two into place ready for trimming, cutting slots and attaching the crank clearance cover that was salvaged from the old sheets.

KS4415 progress 13/11/19

Progress with the Kerr Stuart prototype diesel loco has resumed. A pattern has been made for the engine rocker covers. the cylinder liners are going away for attention as well as the magneto for the Blackburne donkey engine. The cylinder head is being refurbished by T&L Engineering.

Further progress was made with the band brake. The main link that the whole arrangement hangs off was badly wasted so a new one was made. All the holes in the other parts were reamed out and new pins made. It is hoped to assemble the complete brake at the next volunteer weekend at Boston Lodge. The brake parts were subsequently painted and a stand made for the donkey engine.

Snow report 8/11/19

Martin Kressman reports there was a blanket of snow on Snowdon and the Carneddau on 8/11/19. This persisted until 9/11/19 and gave a wonderful alpine backdrop to the Hafod-y-llyn service which started that day. Snowfall was also forecast for Snowdon Summit on 14/11/19 and most days for the following week.

Flying Scotsman in North Wales 8/11/19

Flying Scotsman visited North Wales on 8/11/19 passing Mold Junction at 1044 on Steam Dreams London-Holyhead North Wales Coast Express. No.60103 hauled the train from Crewe to Holyhead and return. The loco will water at Llandudno Junction and take a break at Holyhead, being turned on the now disused Valley Nuclear Electric triangle.

Other workings on 8/11/19 included 67013 on the ManWAG and 67014 on the Cardiff service with Nos. 67023/27 on the RHTT.

On 7/11/19 Nos. 67023/27 top and tailed an NR test train to Holyhead. The RHTT saw Nos. 56087/113 top and tailing, a service they also worked on 5/11/19.

On 6/11/19 67010 was on the Cardiff service and 67013 on the ManWAG, which it also hauled the day before.

On 5/11/19 67012 worked the Cardiff-Holyhead.

On 1/11/19 the RHTT was hauled by Nos.56087/97302.

No.130 progress 4-26/11/19

By 4/11/19 the coal bunker was fully painted with multiple layers of red and varnished ready to fit to the loco when the engine is ready. The water tank was  finished! Now both of the big metal components have been finished, painted and varnished. The cab will soon be completed at Dinas and will be transported to Boston Lodge to have its paint job by the end of the year.

By 9/11/19 the rear power bogie was fully piped up as far as the lubrication was concerned and the mechanical lubrication drive shaft connected. The system has been charged with lubricating oil.

By 16/11/19 the coal bunker was in place and the sand boxes and lights fitted. The lamp brackets go on shortly. The cab will come off within the next week or so to be transported to Boston Lodge for painting. Hopefully, it might be back before Christmas or just in the New Year. The new ashpan was about 60% complete. It is following the latest design perfected by the WHR and is the same as that recently fitted to No.87. It should be complete by the end of November and ready to fit.

By 26/11/19 there was a full grate waiting to go in and the rocking arms are being constructed together with the rocking lever and pivots. Having made the brick arch for No.87 the moulds will be used again to make the identical brick arch for No.130

Lilla back in traffic 4/11/19

Baldwin No.608 fails on photocharter 3/11/19

The Baldwin No.590 lookalike No.608 failed whilst in use on the photocharter last week after two run pasts at Hafod Ruffydd. There were a couple of leaking tubes at the top of the boiler and one side rod came loose presumably after a cotter pin came loose. The other side rod was removed at Beddgelert before the loco was returned to Boston Lodge for repair. The loco is new and like all new locos will have a few minor snags to fix before it operates reliably.

As part of a photocharter over several days and including events on the FR, the newly arrived Baldwin No.608 (45190 of 1/3/17) hauled an FR rake to a point beyond Beddgelert. The rake had Prince on the rear to provide vacuum braking. The loco performed well and made an impressive noise climbing the Nantmor Incline. The loco is a little light on its feet and slipped several times departing Beddgelert northbound but then even the heavy Garratt locos can slip starting on the 1 in 40 in this station. Russell arrived at the station on a WHHR rake courtesy of the WHHR and it was possible to recreate historical tableaux. The loco did not proceed past Beddgelert so the Beddgelert-Waunfawr section is available as a new feature for future Russell events. It is hoped Russell and a Baldwin will be available for WHR members at next year's gala.

ROWG report 2-7/11/19

The Rest of the World Gang spent their recent November working week working wholly on the WHR. As the week had been scheduled just before the start of the Winter Major Works Programme, they busied themselves undertaking a range of maintenance jobs at various locations along the line. The first two days were spent at Rhyd Ddu, dealing with loss-of-cant on the sharp curve beyond the north end of the station.

For the rest of the week, volunteers exchanged kango hammers and jacks for wellies and shovels, to clear trackside drains in Beddgelert Forest, at Rhyd Ddu, Snowdon Ranger and, finally, at Pitts Head, a location that deteriorated to become a swamp during the closure period. Looking back, the ROWG appear to have last cleared the Pitts Head drains in 2011: since that time they had become very overgrown, impeding drainage and housing a large frog population, which was relocated. The Drains Gang doesn't seem to feel the need to clear the WHR's drains, so there is obviously a volunteering opportunity here!

The next working week is scheduled for 30/11-6/12/19, when volunteers should be fully involved with the WMWP which will continue into the New Year's Working Party between 11-17/1/20. Contact the working party organiser, Phil Nock, at pnock@ffwhr.com for full details.

The return of a Baldwin to the WHR allows the recreation of many historical tableaux. The original WHR Baldwin No.590, another 10-12-D 4-6-0T, arrived on the WHR in 1923 purchased from WW1 disposals by Colonel Stephens. It ran on the WHR until closure in 1937 but was out of gauge for the FR. The loco was scrapped in 1942 as part of the war effort metal recovery programme. It is thus 77 years since a Baldwin graced WHR metals.

No.608's history is quite complex. Some 495 Baldwins were delivered for WW1 and this was one of the final batch of 100. It is likely to have seen service on the Western Front. After being constructed for the War Department as Works No.45190 of 1917 the loco was offered for disposal after termination of hostilities in 1918. This loco was likely to have been part of a batch sent with track to the North West Frontier in India to work in in supply depots to support the Third Afghan War which took place in 1919. It then became redundant and became part of the Indian North Western Railway's rolling stock and after storage was sold off in the 1930s.

No.608 became No.45 and was sold as one of six to Daurala Sugar Works in Uttar Pradesh in North Central India. In 1981 it was sold on to Ryam Sugar Factory about 500 miles to the east in Bihar. This closed in 1994 and the loco stood derelict there for 20 years. Three locos were repatriated to the Statfold Barn Railway in 2013 and one of these was sold on to West Lancs Railway founder Graham Fairhurst. The loco moved to a private workshop near Leyland in 2013 where ex Horwich apprentice Jack Cuerden (now78) undertook much of the work, though boiler work was undertaken elsewhere. Final assembly and steam testing took place in early October at Johnson's engineering workshop, Southport before delivery to the F&WHR on 11/10/19. the loco was tested the next day at Boston Lodge.

Owner Graham Fairhurst says the loco will remain at the WHR for the foreseeable future but will be available to visit other lines.

NG15 No.134 Autumn Update

On 14/9/19, the new front dragbox was fitted behind the front buffer beam. It was decided to reduce the height of the drawbar, to allow a straight coupling to be used. This meant that standard F&WHR drawbar parts could be used, which are found in all of the fleet's carriages. The slot in the buffer beam was lowered, then a filler piece welded in. The new drag box was then welded on the back. A wear pad support angle was fabricated and welded on to the front of the buffer beam. The next step is to obtain all of the parts for the drawgear, fabricate the chopper coupling and assemble it all on the loco.

BFHRT update

The Bala & Ffestiniog Heritage Railway Trust that took over the suspended Trawsfynydd project has engaged Green Dragon Rail to help it prepare H&S documentation to allow it to access the Blaenau-Trawsfynydd Lake section again from 2020 hopefully.

No.130 progress 28/10/19

Over the last two weeks the paintwork on the tanks and dome has been completed at Boston Lodge. Eleven coats have been applied to build the depth of the colour and three layers of the sign-writing and lining have been added before two coats of varnish complete the painting. The loco itself is now in the Carriage Shed at Dinas with cab, crinolines and manifold fitted. Most valves have been fitted but are not all connected yet. No.130 must wait its turn as No.87 is first priority to return to steam for the next season.

Blaenau Branch closed again 23/10/19

Following a rockfall in Blaenau Ffestiniog Tunnel the branch was closed yet again from 23/10/19 for inspection and repair but was reopened a few days later. Services terminated at Llanrwst and a bus link was provided. The whole line will be closed from 23/11/19-15/12/19 to complete the storm repair from last winter and deal with 600 rock bolts in Blaenau Ffestiniog tunnel to stabilise the loose rock the geological survey identified were necessary. See Daily Post story.

A new 40 mph speed limit was noticed on the A497 between Minffordd and The Cob, though it is not obvious why as there are no houses on this section. A mobile speed camera was noted on this section in late September.

VoR General Manager responds 17/10/19

In coverage of the VoR it was suggested that many enthusiasts would like to see a Rheidol loco visit the WHR, either a GWR tank or a their new NG16. The VoR General Manager Llŷr ap Iolo has responded:

'The VoR has not changed hands. It is the same company which is a charity and the shares are still held by the Trust. Our chairman has passed away.

There has been no discussion about a Rheidol tank visiting the WHR. We will only have two after March as No.9 comes in for a 10 yearly overhaul and new tanks.

Palmerston was hired and paid for when it visited and was not an exchange deal.

There has been no talk of No.60 (the new NG16) leaving VoR metals to date and it will be air braked anyway.'

VoR locos to visit WHR?

The change of chairmanship at the VoR has led to hopes that a VoR loco might visit the WHR next year. The F&WHR had hired Palmerston to the VoR in 2015, making a very successful Gala. Until March 2020 the VoR will have three working Swindon built locos No. 6 Llywelyn No. 7 Owain Glyndwr and No. 9 Prince of Wales, no longer carrying their names, so it has more locos than it needs for everyday services and easily afford to have one visit the WHR. No.9 currently carries No.1213 (an original GWR number with some subterfuge to it). When asked in September, the F&WHR's General Manager Paul Lewin said he would welcome a VoR loco visiting the WHR and recognised it would be a big draw.

Digital scanning of WHR slides continues

Apologies for the gap in news but scanning had reached a critical stage and images needed to be uploaded to One Drive with a digital name in order to ensure they were stored in the correct date order of film process date YYYYMMDD plus an exposure number (1-36 normally). This will make accessing WHR images a lot easier. This task has now been completed after One Drive made it difficult by failing to upload several images when tasked with uploading several thousand. There is no IGNORE DUPLICATE function which would allow a user to quickly upload a second time if the totals did not match! Normal scanning has now resumed producing some mystery WHR slide locations which will feature in a 'Requests for Help' section in future.

TfW Class 67 appears in new livery

While the ATW blue Class 67s were rarely to be seen on the NWC services, it appears TfW will be requiring a fixed fleet of 5 locos in their livery. It seems that the locos must be fitted with a working driver/guard communication system and door interlock confirmation. No.67008 is first in line and on any day there are only two trains to and from Cardiff (2 diagrams?) with one spare loco. The additional locos could be used for MANWAG services if TfW decides its current extreme rolling stock shortage requires retaining these much loved loco hauled trains after December. After all there is no shortage of Mk4 coaches on the market!

F&WHR on TV 17/10/19

“Steam Train Britain” Thursday 17/10/19, Yesterday Channel, 8.00 p.m. (Freeview channel 25, Freesat 159)

RAIB report on leaning out of trains 16/10/19

Following recent fatal accidents at Balham (7/8/16) and Twerton (1/12/18) on the mainline the RAIB has published recommendations about leaning out of trains, including heritage trains. The RAIB recognises that as heritage railways are different e.g. limited to 25mph, lineside clearance will probably suffice. However its advice is that 'Operators of heritage railways, using stock that passengers could lean out of, should review their risk assessments for people leaning out and implement any additional mitigation measures necessary to achieve an acceptable level of safety (paragraph 95b)', see Twerton Accident Report. As the F&WHR operates open coaches and 'open' Gravity trains, this might apply to the F&WHR.

Baldwin arrives on the F&WHR 11/10/19

The long promised Baldwin No.608 being rebuilt at Southport arrived unannounced on the F&WHR on 11/10/19 having missed the June Russell event it was originally promised for. It will remain on the F&WHR for some time and be subject to some trials. At the moment it is stabled in Boston Lodge where no doubt some final snagging will take place and presumably the fitment of F&WHR style couplings.

After use in WW1, it was transferred to the North Western Railway of India (where it ran as NWR 45) and finally provided traction Daurala and Ryam sugar factories.

Enthusiasts have long waited for a Baldwin on the WHR and it is hoped that No.794 carrying No.590, the original WHR Baldwin, will be joining the WHHR from Aberystwyth next year. With improved relationships between the F&WHR and the WHHR it is hoped that a Baldwin and Russell will feature at some future event, maybe even No.590 recreating historical tableaux.

After the VIP launch on 5/10/19 Gwyrfai made its first public runs on 6/10/19 coinciding with the FR's Vintage Weekend where, unusually, there were no events on the WHR. For the first two days the new coach ran coupled to Pullman No.2115 Bodysgallen providing two first class carriages in the set. After the first weekend Bodysgallen was taken out of the set and will held in reserve, being added to either Observation when required to provide more first class accommodation.

North Wales main line news 1-15/10/19

The WAG Transport Minister has released a letter admitting the rolling stock problems and advising some solutions. One good piece of news is that the MANWAG service will be retained as a loco hauled train with Mk4 coaches though the recently introduced Class 37 hauled Cardiff-Rhymney train will soon go back to unit haulage.

A detailed Driver's Eye view of the North Wales Coast Line is available.

The Rail Head Treatment Trains (RHTT) kicked off on 1/10/19 for the leaf fall season which creates braking problems for lightweight DMUs. the first trains were top and tailed by Nos. 97304/56078. On 4-5/10/19 its was the turn of Nos.97302/4.

On 8-9/10/19 No.67014 was on the Holyhead-Cardiff while No.67010 was on the MANWAG on 8/10/19.

UK Railtours 'Snowdonian Panorama' ran from Euston to Llandudno Junction on 12/10/19 top and tailed by Nos.68005/033. The train then ran ECS to Holyhead for servicing. Also venturing briefly into North Wales on 12/10/19 was No.7029 Clun Castle with unusually No.20189 on the rear. This was the Chester Venturer from Dorridge, returning via Wrexham.

Also on 12/10/19 Nos.56090/96 were on the RHTT.

On 16/10/19 Nos.56113/096 were on the RHTT which also performed the duty the day before.

The MANWAG was hauled by No.67010 on 15/10/19.
