Tuesday Gang report 27/6/17

Tony Baker reports: On Tuesday 27/6/17 the Tuesday Gang worked at 3 locations. Firstly repairs were made to APG's at Tros-y-Gol. Then at Pitt's Head we replaced a wooden gate that was looking a bit tired with a metal gate. Finally the prime job was at Pont Cae'r Gors where the top rail on one of the pedestrian gates had rotted through. This was a 5 foot gate of which we had none in stock. So once again our recycling skills were put to good use. A sound piece of timber was cut from the old wooden gate that we had just replaced at Pitt's Head and fashioned into a replacement top rail.

No.130 news 26/6/17

Work continues on new Garratt No.130 with attention now focussed on refitting steam and water pipework to the cradle. Additional work has taken place on the cab, screw reverser, hand brake, footsteps and injector brackets. The next big stage with the boiler is to make a flat bed onto which the new boiler can be laid out and assembled with the geometry just right. To begin this process, large I beam girders have been laid out onto which a 3 x 6 metre flat steel sheet will be welded to form the assembly plate. This process will be completed by 28/6/17.

Britomart 23/6/17

On 23/6/17 Britomart hauled two coaches on a private working from Porthmadog to Caernarfon then to Blaenau and back to Porthmadog. The loco has previously run to Caernarfon pilotted by Moelwyn several years ago.

Titbits Spring 2017

A new TLC will be published this year in a different style. Taliesin's perforated main steam pipe has been replaced and the loco saw duty on 10/6/17 on a WHR service with David Lloyd George. Lyd has been out of action for a short while a hot box on the pony truck is repaired. Earl of Merioneth rejoined the fleet in mid June for its final season and providing maintenance cover for the other two Fairlies. Volunteers have worked on re-tubing Blanche but the boiler has not yet been returned to the frames. Meanwhile Linda is getting a little tired and has not seen much use but was noted on the Snowdonian Limited on 10/6/17. the loco needs new pony truck wheels as the current set were from Moel Tryfan.

Caernarfon castle is OOU again following a recurrence of its gearbox problems that saw it waylaid several years ago. One of the final drive boxes suffered a failed bearing and has been sent away for repair. Unfortunately the job is not simple as the bearing housing was damaged and a new housing must be made. The wheels may need to be taken off the axles to facilitate this work. While the loco is out of traffic the air brakes are being upgraded top a fail-safe lorry type so that if the loco loses air pressure, the brakes will be applied. The brakes cannot then be released until sufficient air pressure has been generated.

Work on the front end power bogie of No.138 has been completed and good progress has been made with the rear power bogie which requires less work. It is hoped to see the loco back in traffic during June giving maintenance cover for the other two serviceable Garratts.

New coach No.2047 has been turned out with rubber secondary suspension instead of coiled springs to see if it improves the ride. If it does then other WHR coaching stock will be retrofitted.

Welsh Pony update June

Progress is being made with Welsh Pony when time allows. The boiler passed its hydraulic exam in mid-May and the driving wheels have been installed in the main frames. A trial fit for the boiler is planned before fitting the refurbished valve gear, followed by the final fitting of the boiler. The remains of the original rear frame will then be refurbished and bolted to the brackets welded to the backhead of the boiler. The tender is nearly complete. The restoration team would very much like to retain the distinctive flat rods that this loco has carried for many years but the metal at the square eyes has become very thin. Further donations to the Welsh Pony Fund will help deal with this problem.

SuperPower 15-17/9/17

This year's three day SuperPower event on 15-17/9/17, titled 'Welsh Highland Stars' promises to be something special. Many hope for an appearance by Russell from the WHHR on the WHR main line but, sadly, there is still no sign that this will occur.

As is normal for this weekend, there will be an intensive service operating over the three days with many additional departures over and above the standard Welsh Highland service trains. The F&WHR has set a precedent for unique workings in previous years and has no intention of stopping now. There will be passenger, vintage, freight and mixed trains running throughout the weekend, and consequently many favourites from the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland fleet of locomotives will be in use for people to enjoy.

The Snowdonia National Park through which the railway runs is well known for its stunning and varied landscapes which of course can be admired from the train during daylight hours, but Wales now leads the world in the percentage of its territory enjoying protected status for its night skies. The Park is now an International Dark Sky Reserve, only the tenth place in the world to gain this status, and it is the F&WHR's intention to celebrate this achievement at the Gala with a number of special opportunities for visitors to enjoy, maybe with night trains.

Tickets will be available to purchase online in the very near future, and more detailed information regarding the special attractions will be published in due course.

No.134 update 17-18/6/17

The No.134 Group experienced a warm weekend but still with good progress made. The continuing task from last month was the fitting of the fitted bolts for the axle boxes to the pony and Krauss-Helmholtz trucks. The fitted bolts arrived, however they turned out to have M20 fine pitch threads so with only standard nuts available volunteers were only able to tap those into place on the pony truck where they had previously reamed out the holes. These were found these to be a good fit but the group still did not want to continue until they had the nuts to tighten everything up fully.

Volunteers did however move onto the Krauss-Helmholtz truck and reamed out a further 12 holes ready on that. There are eight more to do however again no further progress was safe to be made until these current ones are tightened up. The group continued tidying up of the holes from the last working party to attach the cladding to the cylinders. They had four very large holes left to do which already had stripped M12 threads. So volunteers drilled and tapped these to M14 then fitted plugs and then drilled and tapped into these with M10. All was going well until the tap broke in the last hole so this will be finished with a new tap next time.

The cylinder end covers had the same treatment of cleaning out and re-tapping the holes to take the insulation cover and the cladding cover. Both cylinder covers were then cleaned and painted. As the group wanted the dome cladding cover out of the way onto a shelf they decided to clean this, remove all the various dents and gave it a protective coat of paint.

Finally volunteers revisited the tender rear dragbox as there is some corrosion there. They cleaned off any rust and scale to examine the extent of the problem so a plan for its repair can be formulated. See NG15 website for images.

BF&TR update

There have been some changes in the management structure of this new railway project in the F&WHR's 'backyard'. Teething difficulties are common in newly formed volunteer organisations. A new 4 min 43 second simulation video has been released to show how the railway could operate from a two coach platform at Cwmbowydd Road l/c a few hundred yards west of the joint FR/NR station until such time as operational agreements can be made to run into the main line station. The latter would probably require a new shared section token from the old LNWR station to Cwmbowydd with a trap point each end of the section. The token could be drawn by only one railway when their trains are due in the main line station, unless permissive working was allowed for same platform interchange. See BF&TR Facebook page.

Three Peaks special 15-17/6/17

DRS provided locos Nos.37609/605 to haul this year's Three Peaks charity fund raising special to Bangor (1Z51 off Crewe rather than London as normal). The train was later to run north to Ravenglass (for Scafell Pike) and Fort William (for Ben Nevis). This rail industry sponsored event raises money for the charity Railway Children.

Bontnewydd Bypass Inquiry starts 13/6/17

A Public Inquiry opened on 13/6/17 into the A487 Caernarfon-Bontnewydd bypass that bridges the WHR just north of Bontnewydd Halt. The inquiry is set to take up to 6 weeks. This is an opportunity for members of the public to ask for a junction with the A4085 Caernarfon to Beddgelert road which has been missed out in the scheme. Under current plans people travelling towards Beddgelert will need to continue to drive through Caernarfon, or to continue for some miles to Bontnewydd then double back via local roads to Caeathro to access the A4065 to Beddgelert or travel via the A4086 and Pont-rug to Caeathro. See WAG report for full details, including maps and plans of the scheme. Also see BBC report. Nine alternatives have been proposed which will be considered by the Inspector including a roundabout for the A4085 and changes to the vertical profile when crossing the WHR. See Daily Post report.

Local politicians are concerned there may be decades of delays to the scheme if it is not approved now. See Daily Post report.

Tuesday Gang report 13/6/17

Tony Baker reports: There was a change of scene this week. Whilst we are awaiting fresh supplies of crossing timbers we applied preservative to the station buildings at Meillionen and Waunfawr. We were glad to get done at the Forest Campsite as the midges were out in force.

Class 40 visits the F&WHR 10/6/17

Its now a rare event to see loco hauled trains anywhere near the F&WHR as NR has still not developed a mobile ERTMS system capable of being installed in visiting traction. There have been no railtours to the Cambrian Coast for several years now despite the upgrading of the line making it fit for loco hauled stock. However, Blaenau Ffestiniog continues to be visited from time to time and on Saturday 10/6/17 a WCR/ELR/CFPS special visited Blaenau Ffestiniog from Preston hauled by 40145 carrying number '345', a number it carried for a few years after the end of steam where the D prefix was dropped and before TOPS in 1974.

KS4415 rolling chassis 10/6/17

After five days hard work by pioneer diesel loco volunteers at Boston Lodge, the 'bottom end' of Kerr Stuart 4415 was assembled last week. The work undertaken included fitting the layshaft plus associated sprockets and gears, fitting the springs and radius rods that attach the wheelsets to each other and to the frames, lifting the frame onto the wheelsets, assembling the brake gear, fitting and adjusting the drive chains, and fitting drawgear and couplings. This is a big step forward for the project, and is effectively the end of Stage 1, although there are still a few little bits to finish off. Volunteers will now turn their attention to the engine and gearbox.

Prince to feature at SVR Gala 21-24/9/17

Prince will be running with a heritage carriage on a short track at the Engine House Highley during the SVR's Gala 21-24/9/17. The loco was stored at this location between 2010-12 while out of boiler ticket awaiting its turn in Boston Lodge loco queue. See Steam Railway's report.

Heavy rain disrupts services 8/6/17

Exceptionally heavy rain (even by North Wales standards!) leads to delays on 8/6/17. The first train of the day from Caernarfon ran an hour late and passed the first from Porthmadog at Rhyd Ddu rather than Beddgelert. The Traeth at Pont Croesor was heavily flooded. Later in the day Vale of Ffestiniog was called out to assist No.87 back to Caernarfon.

Heritage Railway concerns about General Election

With Britain going to the polls on 8/6/17, there are concerns in many Heritage Railways about the outcome on their futures. As predicted before the Brexit vote, the economy has begun to dip markedly with the Brexit inspired reduction in the value of the pound, the consequent inflation has spiralled while wages have stagnated in 2017. This has led to reduced disposable income for the majority of families. On the plus side this bad economic news might encourage more 'staycation' but possibly 'nocation' meaning mixed fortunes for Heritage Railways, especially those a long drive from the centres of population, such as the F&WHR, now petrol has gone up so much.

While the Conservative Party, in an extreme volte-face, is now an enthusiastic advocate of Brexit at any cost, Labour and Plaid Cymru are acquiescing to the notion that the UK is going to leave the EU, albeit with various reservations. On the other hand the Liberal Democrats, Scots Nationalists, Greens and even some of the Northern Ireland parties remain implacably opposed to Brexit with the Lib Dems proposing a second referendum when the true cost of Brexit becomes clear.

The WHR has benefitted hugely from the EU's largesse in supporting economically deprived areas on the fringes. It is unlikely the WHR would have been rebuilt without EU support and it remains unclear whether any similar funding stream will appear in these 'straitened' economic times from UK government funds. If the Bank of England projections are correct and this Brexit inspired economic downturn continues, where we are now officially the G7 member with the lowest growth, it is unclear if there will ever be funds available for Heritage Railways in the future.

Voters with an interest in Heritage Railways should consider these issues carefully before voting.

Tuesday Gang report 6/6/17

Tony Baker reports: On 6/6/15 the Tuesday Gang were at Rhyd Ddu working on LC 39.28 where we changed two rotten outer timbers on the Caernarfon end foot crossing and then moved down to the crossing on the Snowdon footpath Ffridd Isaf LC 39.16 where we cleaned out all the mud and slate waste debris which gets washed down. Whilst this was going on three gang members were installing a planter at Meillionen which has been transferred from duties at Caernarfon. This will be planted shortly with rabbit proof flowers.

KS4415 progress 29/5/17

By 22/5/17 manufacturing of the drawgear components was nearing completion at Boston Lodge. All the components are made now and volunteers are just waiting for some non standard large bolts that are on order before they can assemble the dragboxes.

By 23/5/17 the wheels had been re-profiled on the wheel lathe at Boston Lodge. Due to the wheelsets being 2' gauge and the Ffestiniog Railway being 1' 11 1/2" gauge, a compromise flange profile has been used. Drive chains were delivered on 23/5/17 so volunteers are closer to getting the loco back to a rolling chassis.

By 29/5/17 new springs had been for the axlebox oil fillers. These were made from an old bandsaw blade. There was more good progress with wheels spray painted in standard grey, journals and bearings checked after machining, gaskets and seals made for the axleboxes and axleboxes fitted to the wheelsets.

BF&TR starts work at Maentwrog Road 27/5/17

The Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd Railway started work on the Goods Shed at Maentwrog Road station on 27/5/17. Colin Dale advises that NR permission to work on the line from there to Trawsfynydd will soon be granted.

NG15 No.134 report 20-21/5/17

Volunteers busied themselves with few loose ends to start with involved things like cleaning all the components of the rear coupling for the tender ready for re-use as the main priority for the railway is to get the tender and loco chassis capable of being freely moved around. This will help the group in that the two chassis can be positioned in a more suitable work location prior to each working party. The other small job was the fitting of the covers to the Automatic By-pass Valves using a set of gaskets made as a homework project by one of the team. The valves had been fitted to the cylinders last time and so just needed the covers fitted.

Volunteers also reviewed the front valve covers for the cylinders for their cladding cover attachment. These should be stand-offs however most were either missing or converted to studs. Those missing had their holes re-tapped ready.

The group reamed out a few more of the rear pony truck axle box mountings ready for fitting fitted bolts using the existing reamer. They wanted to get the holes reamed so far fitted with the fitted bolts so volunteers decided that they had safely gone as for as they could until the fitted bolts arrive.

One item that had caused great concern last month was the realisation that our rear pony truck frame is quite bent compared to the drawings. It does look from several weld marks in the frame that it has been reconstructed at some point, and does continue to support the group's suspicions, along with various other evidence of replaced or bent 'things' that the loco had been in some sort of an accident, possibly onto its side.

Volunteers therefore took a straight edge and various measuring implements to check alignment. It is vital that the pivot pin is in the centreline of the whole assembly, especially with the centre of the axle. Fortunately the measurements showed minimal error, probably well with measurement error as volunteers are taking the measurements from the axlebox casting rather than with the wheels in place. They were expecting several 10's of mm from the look of the frames but believe this is the least of their worries at this stage.

The other main job concentrated on was the completion of the drilling out and the re-tapping of the various broken studs to hold the cylinder cladding and covers in place. As mentioned last time these had been broken and repositioned several times on the loco's life so the group decided to go back to their original positions. Those that were still viable with a thread and in the correct place were a mixture of M10, M12 and M14 holes! Whilst volunteers were making all the re-drilled holes M10, the few M12 holes that exist are too awkward to alter so will be left. However, the M14 holes and the M12 holes that have had their thread stripped will be plugged with M14 studs and drilled and re-tapped to M10. As M14 is not a standard size for us or the railway we'll need some taps before we can continue so that's one for next time.

Martin Kressman adds: The contractor started work on grit blasting the mess coach No.1001 last Friday (12/5/17). Unfortunately, the onset of rain brought the work to a premature end. The contractor will return at a later date. No.2060, the ex-Romanian coach, has been taken out of service. I have noticed that many of the double glazed units are misted up (it has gone for attention in Boston Lodge Carriage Works-Ed).

Food Festival Extra 13/5/17

On 13/5/17 Merddin Emrys hauled the Caernarfon Food Festival Extra. Prior to this the ex-Shotton Steelworks shunter Bill arrived at Dinas following a period of use 'running in' at Boston Lodge. It has taken over from Castell Caernarfon, which has had its gearbox removed and sent away to contractors for yet another repair. Bill has been found able to haul the standard 10 coach rakes out of the Carriage Shed whilst the steam loco is prepared in the Loco Shed. Sister loco Ben remains grounded at Dinas awaiting refurbishment from an as delivered state.

BF&TR moves forward 11/5/17

Colin Dale has advised of projected developments at Maentwrog Road yard which is set to become the operational base of the Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd Railway.

The clearance of the yard is 75% complete and then volunteers will push on to Trawsfynydd Lake Halt, clearing the jungle caused by 30 years of BR/Railtrack/NR neglect. They will be including the space for a terminus station at the site of the halt, which might be temporary if the railway pushes onto Trawsfynydd and even, according to the long term hopes of some, to Cwm Prysor summit.

Work starts next weekend on restoring the Maentwrog road Goods Shed. See Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd Railway Website for full details.

No.130 update 6/5/17

All six driving wheels were back at Dinas by 6/5/17 along with the driver's seat. By 30/4/17 a test rig was busy testing the Garratt's lubrication non-return valves and Wakefield splitter. Progress has been made with welding up the inner firebox which was nearing completion at the end of April.

SuperPower visitor cancelled

SuperPower on the later weekend of 16-17/9/17 is without a theme this year. A steam visitor has had to be cancelled leading to speculation it was Russell, a VoR loco or even the new L&BR Baldwin No.762 Lyn, due to be test steamed at Keef's on 8/7/17.

Titbits Spring 2017

In 2008 the F&WHR purchased a number of redundant token machines from IE (Irish Railways). The WHR is looking for volunteers to refurbish them so they can be used in conjunction with Roland Doyle's Micro-ETS system which has been operating in parallel on test at Pont Croesor.

Tryfan Junction is getting new fences in the style recently fitted at Dinas, Snowdon Ranger, Nantmor and the entrance to Waunfawr. Fencing at Beddgelert awaits a definitive station buildings plan but Rhyd Ddu and Pont Croesor will need long fences so sponsorship at £110 per 2.4m panel is urgently being sought by the WHRS.

Funding is nearing completion for the £170,000 cost of the second Observation Car to be named Gwyrfai but donations are still being sought. The frame for this may be constructed at Dinas as the frame for the new FR Observation Car No.152 has now left the works for Boston Lodge.

A volunteer station master is being sought for Caernarfon to ensure everyone catches the 10:00.

KS4415 update 5/5/17

There was good progress with the restoration of the unique Kerr Stuart shunter over the last month and the frames were on display at the Q&C2 Boston Lodge open day. The shunter is famous for being demonstrated on the F&WHR in 1928-29.

At the end of March new bearings arrived for the starting gear and work continued on the brake gear. a bronze ring was turned up to act as a spacer for the thrust bearing as the group was not able to obtain one of the same thickness as the original.

In early April all the new brake pins were made and the brake gear was nearing completion with just the brake blocks to drill. The grit blasting contractor was also on site at Boston Lodge to clean up a load of components ready for the next stages of work. After blast cleaning volunteers gave everything a thick coat of MIO guard paint to protect it until they have time to work on them.

By early May, one of the KS4415 group's volunteers had designed a new dragbox arrangement for No.4415 based on the F&WHR standard coupler. It had to be modified to fit in the restricted space available between the bufferbeam and gearbox at the front of the loco and the narrow gap between the frame stretchers at the rear. Over our last two working sessions we have started making the dragboxes. Volunteers intend to finish these before they put the frames back on the wheels, so that proper couplings can be fitted and the loco will be easy to move about. A doubling plate was riveted to the inside of the buffer beam to strengthen it and a hole cut with a plasma torch then angle iron was riveted to support the drag box. See KS4415 Facebook page for images of progress.

New Railtour operator

A new railtour operator will be competing for excursion traffic of the North Wales Coast and The Marches routes from Chester and Shrewsbury and Crewe soon. Loco Services of Crewe has submitted an application for a licence to become a TOC. The company is owned by steam enthusiast millionaire Jeremy Hosking who owns several steam locos and has purchased the former Crewe Diesel Depot site. Provisional arrangements are in place to operate railtours later this year using a rake of 10 refurbished carriages. LMS 4-6-0 Royal Scot has been allocated the duty.

In recent years there has been a decline in railtours to the North Wales Coast and those to the Cambrian Coast have died out following NR's breaking its pledge to provide a mobile ERTMS unit and requiring all trains to be headed by ERTMS fitted Class 37s.

Caernarfon report 29/4/17

Richard Watson reports: Portacabins have arrived, presumably for contractors' staff, but no actual work seems to be taking place yet. The buffer stop has been removed from the headshunt, so loco crews will have to take extra care when running round. The ex-Age Cymru building seems to be fulfilling its temporary function very well, but, as it is a little off the beaten track, passengers aiming for Caernarfon town centre are bypassing the building, so it did seem very quiet from the business point of view. However, there is a small waiting area and one can buy a sandwich and a cup of tea and sit in the waiting area to consume them.
Bill was in the bay platform at Dinas, and No.9 looked out of use, close to the coaling point. Upnor Castle still seems to be fulfilling shed pilot duties.

I now gather that a large gas main has been 'found' where it isn't supposed to be and this will presumably add cost and time to the project.

Q&C2 report 28/4/17

Lilla was unfortunately failed at Pont Croesor; having its fire thrown out on the Friday's first return top & tailed shuttle from Hafod-y-llyn. Low water in the tank, possibly made worse by a dragging brake, coupled with the very poor old injectors (new ones soon to go on) and a blocked tank balance pipe, all conspired against. With no vacuum ejector on Diana at the head of the train, the token was returned by road and Linda, spare engine in steam at Boston Lodge, was hastily despatched. Following departure of Britomart and Davenport from Pont Croesor's Down platform on the second shuttle, Linda was able to couple behind Lilla and, after finding an extension vacuum hose, all was well. The out-of-course running forced a few seconds' stand at Cae Pawb to clear an Arriva train, subsequent to which the next shuttle was able to depart only a few minutes' down. Surprisingly, Diana barely used half its tanks of water on each shuttle!

This westerly view (28/4/17) shows tiny Decauville 0-4-0T Chuquitanta on its skips train at Porthmadog Harbour. WalesRail news 27/4/17

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has revealed the priorities for new stations in Wales and Caernarfon does not appear on the list. Instead, North Wales might see new stations at Llangefni (requiring reopening a section of the Amlwch branch from Gaerwen Junction-see Daily Post report), Deeside Industrial Park/Northern Gateway, North Wrexham, South Wrexham and Bow Street near Aberystwyth. See BBC website.

Elsewhere, the 5.5 mile Saltney-Rossett re-doubling, between Chester and Wrexham, was finally opened on 1/4/17 more than a year after completion of the tracklaying. The delay was down to replacing signalling cables which were found to be deficient for operation of the upgraded level crossings. This section is mostly in England but was funded by WAG, who have expressed further interest in improving punctuality by redoubling more of the line. NR claims that it is too expensive to redouble the remaining 5 miles in Wrexham as singling (without a though for potential future growth!) some 20 years ago to make the A483 Wrexham to Chester dual carriageway cheaper to build has left two expensive new bridges to construct if redoubling is completed between Rossett and Wrexham. Some thought might be given to using the Wrexham-Shotton line and reinstating the Shotton High Level-Connah's Quay chord, which was closed in the 1960s, but this would then cause North Wales-South Wales trains miss out Chester, an important destination for many passengers on the North Wales Coast line and on the Marches route through Shrewsbury.

While responsibility for the rail network will not be devolved to WAG, the Wales & the Borders Franchise (WalesRail) could be responsible for rolling stock procurement by the end of 2017. Only 25% of existing rolling stock is compliant for new disabled access regulations that come into force in 2020 and Porterbrook is unwilling to modify the 72 Class 150s unless long term leases can be arranged. WalesRail is considering the Class 230, the ex-LT D Trains from Vivarail and will also look at Class 319 Flex bi-modes and London Midland's Class 323s which could be retrofitted with diesel engines. Strangely WalesRail does not seem to be looking at the Class 68/Mk5 loco-hauled option being purchased by Northern. As these coaches are currently in production it could be a relatively cheap solution to have an add on order at the end of that production run, now well underway. This quality loco-hauled option would suit the North Wales-Manchester/Cardiff/Birmingham services as well as the Manchester-Cardiff services rather than the overcrowded Class 158s used on most of these services.

Lorry strikes Porthmadog bridge 25/4/17

BBC News reported a bridge strike by a lorry at Penamser NR railway bridge on the A497 just west of Porthmadog. This led to long delays on the road on 25/4/17 (now reopened) and some NR delays to allow for a bridge inspection to check the track had not been disturbed. This bridge of one of many built by the A&WCR with future double track in mind so it has a double track abutment but only a single track deck. See also Daily Post report.

Dinas Loco Shed report

The cryogenic fitting of new hardened crank pins to No.130 will see the driving wheels delivered to Dinas soon. Work is almost complete on the overhaul of No.138's front power unit. A decision is to be made whether the rear power unit will be taken out and worked on. With both power units then in good condition No.138 should last until its 10 year re-tubing at the end of 2019.

Coach Works report

Six coaches went through the Boston Lodge works last Winter. The most time consuming job is the conversion of No.2041 to No.2091, a Guard/Buffet Pantry/Toilet/Third class saloon. The saloon compartment will be very similar in style to the latest WHR coaches. This coach will be similar to No.2090 on the other rake and provide a toilet each end of the train. With so much going on in the main works new saloon No.2047, sponsored by the WHRS, still requires attention from the fitters, however, bodywork is now complete and it is hoped that the coach will appear in traffic this year.

BF&TR Crowdfunder nearing the target 25/4/17

The Crowdfunding Appeal for a chipper to clear the Blaenau Ffestiniog & Trawsfynydd Railway and has reached £4251 from some 45 supporters, some 85% of the £5,000 target with 23 days left. There is £749 to go to reach the target. A previous Crowdfunder to purchase an EWS Class 08 failed and the loco was purchased by the Telford Steam Railway. The funds raised went into project coffers.

New wagon BZ1423

A new wagon has been built at Boston Lodge from recycled parts of other wagons. It has the running gear from a condemned DZ dropside wagon, a new underframe created in Boston Lodge a year or so ago and a centre door body cut down from some B wagon sides. The BZ wagon type code is a mixed code between B and DZ styles of wagon. The drop down ends will make it a useful addition to the PW fleet.

Q&C2 update 18/4/17

The FR's four day Quirks and Curiosities event takes place over the bank Holiday weekend from 28/4/17-1/5/17 and will feature some events on the WHR. On Friday 28/4/17 there will be a series of five 'Quirky Shuttles' Porthmadog-Hafod-y-llyn in the afternoon (Britomart, Lilla, Kerr Stuart Diana and a Quirk tbc) plus a 'Curious Galloping Shuttle' The Goose at 1540. On Saturday there are no WHR passenger events but three freights run to Pont Croesor, (Diana and the skip wagons, Moel Hebog and the S&T Dept. train and finally the Quadbike).

On Sunday there is a Quirky Shuttle in the morning (Palmerston and Lyd) and two round trip Galloping Shuttles to Pont Croesor, which may be extended to Hafod-y-llyn depending on timings. There will also be three non-passenger workings to Pont Croesor and return - Deviation 'wagon'; WW1 Speeder; WW1 Campagne Tracteur; 0-4-0T Diana.

On Monday 1/5/17 the Galloping Shuttle is back in the morning with a 10:10 round trip from Porthmadog to Pont Croesor. The second trip at 11:25 may be extended to Hafod-y-llyn. Tickets will be limited for these very small shuttles. Photos would be welcome for publication. See FR timetable and booking form page.

The Galloping Goose was an allegedly rough riding bus-train (similar to that pictured below) used on the Rio Grande Southern 3' gauge lines in Colorado, USA. The concept was developed to save money compared to a conventional loco hauled passenger train. RGS trains operated around the west side of the San Juan mountain range between Durango and Ridgway, via Telluride, until the line closed in 1951. See Galloping Goose Wikipedia page.

T&BFR gets HLF support

The T&BFR Crowdfunding Appeal for a chipper to clear the overgrown railway between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd received good news on 24/4/17 when they received a donation of £2,500 that had been pledged by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This was dependent upon reaching a goal set by the HLF. After reaching that target and HLF honoured the Group's hard work with the promised funds. However the Crowdfunding appeal is still short on reaching the Group's desired target of £5,000 to purchase a new chipper. Only a further £1,230 more is needed to reach their target. The T&BFR would like to thank all who have so far donated and request that the donations keep coming in so that they can progress the project to a standard where they can run the railway with trains. Small or large donations, even a chipper as a donation (never know unless you ask) would all be gratefully received and used to benefit the railway.

Beer Festival 19-21/5/17

This year's Beer Festival at Dinas is larger than ever. The event is open from 1100-2400 on Friday 19/5/17 and features live music in the evening. There is further live music from 1115-2400 and jamming sessions Sunday. Weekend entry to the event (exclusive of train travel) is £10 including a souvenir glass or £5 Sunday only. A starter pack costing £20 includes Weekend entry and covers 6 beers or 5 ciders or 3 wines. Shuttle train rovers cost £5 Caernarfon-Dinas or Dinas-Waunfawr. The RED peak timetable is in operation of Friday and Saturday. The Snowdonia Park brewpub and three venues in Caernarfon are involved but again not the Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd Ddu.

BF&TR project Crowdfunding

The latest Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd Railway Crowdfunding appeal has raised £1,110 so far. That is 22.2% of the target of £5,000. Volunteers have 29 days left for the fund raiser for a chipper. Simply the railway needs a lot of heavy vegetation clearing for volunteers to conduct a survey for operating of the line. The chipper required will help the group clear the line at a faster pace and to a high standard. Also the current hire charges of £200-250 per weekend is unsustainable at that price. When the group has its own chipper, running costs will be considerably reduced meaning more funds available for other projects upon the railway. Click Crowdfunder to donate. Volunteers are working at Maentwrog Road Yard most weekends. See BF&TR Volunteers Facebook page for details.

East Anglia Group meeting 20/4/17

David Gander reports: Our next meeting takes place this coming Thursday, 20/4/17 when Paul Lemon will be telling us about ‘The Colne Valley Railway’. Our final meeting before the Summer break will be on Thursday 18/5/17 when David Colenutt will talk to us about ‘Corsican and Sardinian Narrow Gauge’. We then meet again in October. East Anglian Group members may be interested to know that Alan Denney is kindly arranging a visit to Old North Road station, at Longstowe in Cambridgeshire, at the south end of the village on the A1198. The station is on the former Bedford to Cambridgeline. This is a great opportunity to visit this privately owned station and collection, not regularly open to the public. The visit is on Sunday 23/7/17 between 2pm and 4pm. This will be a joint visit with the Ffestiniog East Anglian Group and therefore an ideal opportunity to get together with fellow enthusiasts from our area and talk all things FfR/WHR!

We meet at the Six Bells Pub, 9 High Street, Fulbourn, Cambridge CB21 5DH. We meet up any time after 6-6.30pm and an evening meal is available in the restaurant or bar. Prices are reasonable. The meetings are usually held in the Function Rooms, accessed from the car park at the rear of the pub, and start around 8pm with a halfway break for coffee (£1.20 per person). We finish around 10pm. There is a charge of £2 per meeting for Group members, £3 for non-members.

No.130 update 17/4/17

In early April the new firebox was nearing completion when a slight delay occurred after the principle welder had a road accident. In mid April there was progress with the pipework: Serious attention is now being given to refurbishing or replacing all of the steam, exhaust and water pipework required. Luckily, at least some of the original pipework can be reused but new flanges and studs will be required for all joints and some of the wasted pipe will need to be cut out and replaced. It is hoped that the cradle pipework will be completed within the coming weeks. The boiler cradle itself is coming along well and is being painted. Most of the brake components are now fitted. Brake blocks have been delivered for fitting to No.130.

No.134 report 8-9/4/17

There were a number of jobs started last month's working party that volunteers continued into this month, as well as starting some work in other areas.

Work on the Snifter and Vacuum By-pass Valves for the cylinders continued from last month. Volunteers had one by-pass valve to finish off and lap-in and this was duly done early on the Saturday. After some cleaning of all the various mating faces they then fitted all the valves onto the cylinders, the first being the Snifting Valves followed by the By-pass Valves. These latter ones were sealed using some gaskets made as a homework project by one of the team.

Other members of the team were continuing with the pony trucks. The Group had re-fitted the axle boxes during the previous two working parties, however they've been fitted using temporary bolts as fitted bolts are required that will need to be manufactured. As the holes needed to be reamed out to a slightly larger size volunteers are not quite sure what size was actually going to be needed. This month therefore, armed with several reamers, it was established that 21mm bolts will suffice. The group managed just short of 1/4 of the holes so they will continue next month when hopefully all the fitted bolts will have been made.

Another job started was to drill out the cylinder cladding attachment holes in the cylinder casting. The vast majority of the holes had broken off bolts in them, and in many cases the attachment point had been repositioned and several times for some. Unfortunately some of the repositioned ones were very close to the cylinder studs so volunteers are going back to the original positions and drilling out and re-tapping the holes. In most cases all the accessible ones were pilot drilled and so the group needs to finish the job next time with the tapping.

One last job is that volunteers started to look at the tender frames again. The frames need to be movable so as to get them nearer to where work needs to be done. It was noted that the rear tender drag-box needs some attention as it has been attacked by the rust moth so will need some remedial work done. The group gathered together and cleaned all the coupling components so as it's ready to be assembled with an FR style coupling.

WHHG report

The WHHG magazine for December has an editorial suggesting that the ongoing failure to allow original WHR locos on the WHR is down to someone or a group of people blocking the move presumably at the F&WHR.

There is a good feature on KS4415, the original diesel tested on the WHR. There is discussion about the next building restoration project, either the Glan-yr-Afon yard weigh-house or Betws Garmon station building. It is possible that the Glan-yr-afon site could be cleared of vegetation, fenced off from the mainline allowing sheep to graze and clear the site. The building could be stabilised and restored to use for PW purposes. There are a number of options concerning Betws Garmon, the most drastic being to demolish and use the material to build a prototypical station building at Waunfawr! Betws Garmon is too far from Bryn Gloch campsite which is the obvious location for any new halt in the area, if the campsite management were to take a more pro-active business orientated approach!
