The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Saturday predicted a sunny day with temperatures of 14-22C. Saturday's train service offered 7 trains in total with 5 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and The Quarryman) and the two through trains on the WHR. All three webcams were running normally today.
No.143was first today arriving with the ECS for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster at about 09:25. The ECS for the Mountain Spirit came over by 10:20 hauled by Merddin Emrys to the FR platform and the loco uncoupled to refuel and tank up with water. Run round came at 10:25. James Spooner arrived with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer a little later.
No 87was on the return 1410 The Harbourmaster from Caernarfon, so there was a swop at Beddgelert' The Fairlie swop occurred at lunchtime so James Spooner was on the Mountain Spirit arriving back in the WHR platform at 17:50. The loco uncoupled and ran to the yard straight away to refuel and water.
Blaenau Ffestiniog Family fun day Sunday 1/9/24
On Sunday 1/9/24 the F&WHR is hosting another of the popular ‘Family Fun Days’
at Blaenau Ffestiniog’s railway station - featuring footplate rides, stalls on
the platform and a special train to Tan-y-Bwlch and back. One of the ex-Penrhyn
Quarry Railway locos Blanche or Linda will be busy
providing footplate rides through the station from 10:30 until 13:30. These
locomotives normally take it in turns to work The Quarryman
service from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog – with one based in Glan-y-pwll
depot (Blaenau Ffestiniog), while the other is receiving attention at the Boston
Lodge workshops.
If you fancy a train journey down the Ffestiniog Railway - a special train for
locals (those with a primary address in LL41 only) will leave Blaenau Ffestiniog
at 14:25 heading to Tan-y-Bwlch, where there’s a break of just over an hour
before the return journey, arriving back in Blaenau Ffestiniog at around 16:40.
The train will be worked by a different engine in each direction – giving you
the chance to ride behind both Blanche or Linda on
the same day!
*PLEASE NOTE: Customers travelling on the locals’ train must bring proof of
residency (e.g. Driver’s License) on the day of travel to show at the check in
desk. LL41 is the area from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Trawsfynydd and Maentwrog (it
is not clear why the area is being drawn so small).
Tickets for the locals’ train to Tan-y-Bwlch can be purchased on the day: Adults
£10 - Children £1.
There is no charge for footplate rides, but donations are always welcome. There
is no need to pre-book any of the activities either.
Come along with friends and family to join in the fun - the F&WHR look forward
to seeing you during the day!
KS4415 event 14/9/24
Coinciding with SuperPower, a special 'Meet the Expert Workshop' event is being
organised to promote Kerr Stuart 4415, the pioneer diesel that was
tested on the FR and WHR in the 1920s. This is a FRS supported project so show
your support and please share the post! It is a combination of talks/theory
intermingled with the chance to pore over the locomotive, engine and other
components at Boston Lodge on Saturday 14/9/24.
Built in 1927, Diesel Pioneer Kerr Stuart 4415 is the one of the
most historically important locomotives in Britain. Never heard of it? Not
interested in Diesels? This event is not for you! As its painstaking restoration
enters the final stages there is no better time to both see progress and hear
the remarkable story of the Diesel from the dawn of time and the care being
taken to restore it.
The price is of course a suggested donation of £44.15 (get it?). All proceeds
will go to the locomotive's restoration. A free copy of the IRS' reproduction of
the fascinating Kerr Stuart brochure '15 Shillings Change' will go to all
members of the FR Heritage Group enrolling. Want to join the FR Heritage Group
to take advantage of this offer? Please get in touch to book your place and
details of how to make a suggested donation will be given. This workshop will be
run by KS4415 Project Leader David High.

The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Friday predicted sunny periods with temperatures of 12-20C. Friday's train service offered 7 trains in total with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and the two Boston Lodge Works shuttles). There is just one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). The Cwellyn midday service from Caernarfon to Rhyd Ddu has now finished for the year. All three webcams were running normally today.
Lilla shunted out of the yard at 15:15 and propelled the shuttle back into the platform ready for the 15:45 working. James Spooner was on the afternoon Woodland Wanderer. At 17:48 David Lloyd George ran round the Mountain Spirit in the FR platform. Lilla arrived back at 18:04 in the WHR platform with the shuttle and DLG departed immediately afterwards with the ECS Mountain Spirit. Lilla departed with the ECS at 18:15 propelling its shuttle rake back across The Cob to close the day's activities.

At the end of the day, James Spooner arrived back in the WHR platform at about 17:40 as another train was occupying the FR platform, presumably the Woodland Wanderer. The earlier train left promptly and the Fairlie worked light engine to the fuelling point at 17:45 through the FR platform. The new Fairlie worked back to its rake at 18:05 and departed with the ECS at 18:09 to close the day's activities.
F&WHR 28/8/24

Wednesday's train service offered 12 trains in total with 8 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer and The Quarryman and two Boston Lodge Works Shuttles). There are four trains on the WHR (the two The Aberglaslyn, the Gelert Explorer and The Cwellyn ). All three webcams were running normally today.
At 10:05 No.130 was waiting in the WHR with The Aberglaslyn and Lilla was shunting in the yard with the Boston Lodge Tour Shuttle. James Spooner arrived with the ECS for the 10:40 Mountain Spirit in the FR platform at 10:10 which allowed the 10:10 Boston Lodge Works Shuttle to pick up its passengers in the short length of FR platform by the signalbox and depart a few minutes late at 10:13. Merddin Emrys was next up with the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer.
Linda was first of the midday departures on the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer. At 15:10 a train arrived in the FR platform allowing the recently returned Linda a path back to the depot with the ECS for the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer. At 15:30 Lilla appear with the shuttle rake by the short platform by the signalbox for the 15:45 Boston Lodge Works shuttle.
First of the trains to return home was No.130 at 16:20 with The Aberglaslyn. The ECS departed for the depot at 16:29. James Spooner was back at 17:02 with the Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 17:14 and departed with the ECS 3 minutes later. Merddin Emrys returned at 17:47 having made the swop to the Mountain Spirit at lunchtime. Lilla arrived at 18:01 in the WHR platform with the final arrival, the Boston Lodge Works Shuttle. The loco propelled back to the depot a few minutes later while the Fairlie ran round its rake in the FR platform. the ECS departed at 18:13 to close the day's activities.
Palmerston evening train on VoR 28/8/24
On 28/8/24 Palmerston hauled an evening train to Devil's Bridge, one of a series of events before the loco returns home in late September via the L&BR. Photos are available on the Friends of F&WHR Facebook page.
F&WHR 27/8/24
The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Tuesday predicted heavy rain for most of the day with an overcast sky and temperatures of 15-18C. There are three trains on the WHR (the two through trains and The Cwellyn ). Two of the three webcams were running normally today with the Porthmadog webcam back in action by the end of the afternoon.
Merddin Emrys was on the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer and after the Fairlie swop hauled the 14:20 Mountain Spirit. At the end of the afternoon Merddin Emrys arrived back with the Mountain Spirit at 17:45. The loco ran round and departed at 18:05 to close the day's activities. It appeared that some temporary signalling had been installed on The Cob to reduce delays after the trident was demolished in the storm last week.
Llandrindod derailment blocks Heart of Wales route 27/8/24
A low speed derailment of one bogie at Llandrindod Wells closed the Heart of Wales line early on Friday. Bustitutions were required between Llanwrtyd Wells and Craven Arms but train services were restored the next day. See Rail News report.
F&WHR 26/8/24
The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Monday predicted an improving day with an overcast morning but sunny periods by midday and temperatures of 13-17C. Monday's train service offered 9 trains in total with 8 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman and two Boston Lodge Tour shuttle). There is just the one trains on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer from Caernarfon). Two of the three webcams were running normally today with the Porthmadog webcam out of action all day for the fourth day.
Palmerston was again running three trains on the last day of the VoR Gala. The first working was a short out and back to Capel Bangor departing Aberystwyth at 10:35. The train was very lightly loaded which was not a surprise given the overcast cold conditions. The second working was a 13:20 to Aberffrwd and back.
'For the Love of Steam' has produced a 45 minutes YouTube on the Rheidol Steam Festival 2024. The click on this address to watch Palmerston in action on the VoR.
Four Double Fairlies on display

Double Fairlie Earl of Merioneth has recently been on display in
the Old Engine Shed in grubby, distressed 'as withdrawn' condition.
However, over the past few days EoM was moved to the Erecting
Shop, where a group of volunteers gave the loco some well-needed TLC - removing
dust and grime that had built up over the past six years, cleaning the paintwork
and polishing brass, as well as attending to areas of rust. Before the loco was
returned to the Old Engine Shed, the opportunity was taken to photograph a
line-up of all four FR based Double Fairlies (left to right) - James
Spooner, David Lloyd George, Earl of Merioneth
and Merddin Emrys. Unfortunately a night-time raid on the NRM was
not possible, so Livingston Thompson could not join the party!
Final week of The Cwellyn service
This will be the last week of the busy summer timetable - which means there are only three more chances to ride The Cwellyn service this year. It is ideal for a midweek afternoon trip out from Caernarfon. Leaving our station in St. Helen's Road at 12:00 on Tuesday and Thursday - or 12:30 on Wednesday - there is time to explore Caernarfon town in the morning, then enjoy a 2½ round trip to Rhyd Ddu, nestling on the slopes of Y Wyddfa (Snowdon).
This northerly view (8/24) shows Lyd approaching Rhyd Ddu on The Cwellyn.. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to expand fully where available. Image copyright F&WHR taken on a digital camera.
It is a 12 mile train ride each way through the magnificent scenery of North
Wales (taking around an hour in each direction) with a ½hr break at Rhyd Ddu to
stretch your legs and admire the surrounding mountain peaks of Eryri - the
Snowdonia National Park...

The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Sunday predicted an improving day with showers in the morning but sunny periods later and temperatures of 13-17C. Sunday's train service offered 8 trains in total with 5 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and the Boston Lodge Tour shuttle). There are just the three trains on the WHR (two The Aberglaslyn and the Gelert Explorer from Caernarfon). Two of the three webcams were running normally today with the Porthmadog webcam out of action all day for the third day.

Palmerston on the VoR
Palmerston was running on the Vale of Rheidol at the Festival of Steam 2024 on all three days with two short trips in earlier in the day and a full length trip in the late afternoon. The 1600 long trip arrived at Devil's Bridge a couple of minutes late after stopping for a blow up in drizzle at 17:05. The loco topped up with water and ran round, departing at 17:45.
This westerly view (25/8/24) shows Palmerston arriving at Devil's Bridge in the drizzle at about 17:00. the short rake included a brake van as the passenger brakes were in use on the two main trains. F&WHR 23/8/24
There was an incident mid morning when the trident signal out on The Cob was brought down by a particularly strong gust. Harlech Castle and the S&T rake had to be brought up quickly from Minffordd to ensure the signal was clear of the tracks and alternative means of control of trains could be put in place. This was likely to be a 'Stop and Proceed' board which requires all train drivers to contact the Porthmadog signalbox to obtain permission to proceed into the station. This might result in a small delay to returning services approaching across The Cob.
There are several images copyright Ian Wilson showing the S&T Team dealing with the damage on The Cob. See Friends of F&WHR Facebook page.
It is likely diesel test trains were sent out to make sure the lines were clear before the passenger service started. Friday's train service offered 7 trains in total with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and two Works Visit shuttles). There was just one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). The Harbour Station webcam dropped out sometime during the day probably shortly after the signal incident but the other two seemed to be running normally today.

A day in the life of The Quarryman 23/8/24
This is a YouTube showing the preparation and run of The Quarryman. It would be nice if something similar could be done on the WHR e.g. for The Cwellyn.

The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Thursday predicted a day of sunny periods and temperatures of 12-18C. There is a weather warning out for 80mph gusts again developing overnight with Storm Lilian for Caernarfon. Thursday's train service offered 9 trains in total with 8 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman). There were three trains on the WHR (two through trains and The Cwellyn). All three webcams were running normally today.
Merddin Emrys arrived at Tan-y-bwlch at 11:22 with the Mountain Spirit passing Harlech Castle which was waiting in the loop with the morning PW train and Mess Car No.1111. The PW train left just after David Lloyd George arrived on the Woodland Wanderer. DLG ran round at 12:07.
Down at Porthmadog at 13:05 Linda , having arrived on The Quarryman and shunted it to the yard, acted as station pilot. DLG arrived at 13:28 with the returning Woodland Wanderer and Linda immediately shunted onto the rear releasing No.130 to run round its train in the WHR platform. Linda cleared the Woodland Wanderer to the yard so that the Mountain Spirit could arrive. After coaling and watering, DLG shunted out of the yard ready for the Fairlie swop as Merddin Emrys approached at 14:00 with the returning Mountain Spirit.
DLG left with the afternoon Mountain Spirit at 14:23 and Snowdonia Star left a minute later after the fireman had sprinkled sand on the rail head to avoid a slip, Merddin Emrys shunted the Woodland Wanderer back into the FR platform. Blanche arrived back at 14:45 in the WHR platform with the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer. This cleared The Cob for the departure of the 14:50 Woodland Wanderer. No.143 arrived back at 16:50 on The Harbourmaster.
At 17:03 Merddin Emrys arrived back with the Woodland Wanderer and No.143 left a minute later with the ECS The Harbourmaster. The Fairlie ran round at 17:10 and propelled the ECS back into the yard at 17:20 leaving the FR platform free. This unusual move may have been because the Mountain Spirit was in section but that train could have used the WHR platform. DLG arrived at 17:35 with the returning Mountain Spirit into the FR platform and Merddin Emrys left immediately with its ECS. The final movements of the day were the run round at 17:50 and disposal of the ECS Mountain Spirit at 17:55 to close the day's activities.
Double Headed Ladies Special - Sunday 25/8/24
The 14:20 Mountain Spirit on Bank holiday Sunday 25/8/24 will be
double headed by Linda and Blanche.
There is a rare chance to ride behind Penrhyn Ladies to Blaenau Ffestiniog and
return. Always among the most popular of the Ffestiniog Railway's loco fleet
since their arrival on the railway in 1962/63, this ex-Penrhyn Quarry Railway
main line duo have given stalwart service ever since - approaching a total of
125 years between them!
Built in 1893, LINDA and BLANCHE celebrated their
125th birthdays at a major event in 2018 - which, of course, included a
double-headed trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Over recent weeks the two locos have
been working from different ends of the Ffestiniog Railway, but this coming
weekend presents an opportunity for LINDA and BLANCHE
to once again make a run along the FR together.
So, why not come and enjoy the sight and sound of DOUBLE-HEADED LADIES
powering through the Vale of Ffestiniog.

The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Wednesday predicted an overcast showery afternoon and temperatures of 11-18C. There is a weather warning out for 60mph gusts developing overnight, the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto that caused damage across the Atlantic a few days ago. Wednesday's train service offered 12 trains in total with 8 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman and the two Works Visit shuttles). There were four trains on the WHR (two The Aberglaslyn from Porthmadog and the Gelert Explorer and The Cwellyn from Caernarfon). All three webcams were running normally today.
Lilla shunted out of the yard at 10:10 after Merddin Emrys arrived with the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform while No.143 simmered in the WHR platform. Lilla departed with the Works Visit shuttle at 10:14 from a short section of the FR platform by the signal box. No.143 departed with The Aberglaslyn 3 minutes late at 10:18. Merddin Emrys ran round at 10:25 after James Spooner arrived in the WHR platform with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer. James Spooner with roof closed against inclement weather, completed its run round after the Mountain Spirit had cleared station shunt limits.
At 10:00 Harlech Castle was standing in the loop at Tan-y-bwlch with the early morning PW train including Mess coach No.1111 to pass the Mountain Prince. The heavily loaded Mountain Spirit passed Tan-y-bwlch at 11:22 but the PW train waited for the following Woodland Wanderer to arrive half an hour later at 11:58 and departed a minute later for Minffordd Yard, arriving at 12:23 in the mineral Line. Back down at Porthmadog Blanche departed with the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer at 12:31.
At 17:00 Merddin Emrys appeared on the Woodland Wanderer, the two trains having swopped Fairlies at lunchtime. The train departed at 17:14 ECS for the depot after the loco had run round. James Spooner arrived in the FR platform at 17:33 with the Mountain Spirit.
At 17:40 Lilla shunted out of Boston Lodge works and reversed from Pen Cob Junction to Boston Lodge Halt to pick up the participants of the afternoon Works Visit. After the Fairlie had run round the Mountain Spirit, Lilla arrived with the Works Visit shuttle at 17:53 in the WHR platform. The Fairlie set off for the depot with the ECS at 17:55 leaving staff to dispose of the shuttle. At 18:03 Lilla propelled the ECS shuttle back to Boston Lodge to conclude the day's activities.

Here is a review by a recent works tour participant
“The 2+ hour tour of Boston Lodge was both informative and spectacular,
including a well-presented potted history of the railway. Our guide, Stuart, a
volunteer, was both knowledgeable and personable, working well in tandem with
another volunteer to ensure our safety while engine movements were going on.
Many photo opportunities, of rolling stock as well as locos, in various stages
of life: rusting, repairing, refurbishing and renewed.”

F&WHR 20/8/24
The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Tuesday predicted sunny periods and temperatures of 11-18C. Tuesday's train service offered 9 trains in total with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman) and three trains on the WHR, the two through trains and The Cwellyn.
First up was No.143 on the ECS for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster which pulled into the WHR platform at 09:23. Merddin Emrys had run round the 10:40 Mountain Spirit in the FR platform by 10:25. t 11:00 the Woodland Wanderer was ready to depart the WHR platform with Fairlie in charge. At 12:15 Blanche was running round in the FR platform having brought in the ECS 12:25 Woodland Wanderer from the depot.
At 12:55 Linda arrived from Blaenau Ffestiniog with The Quarryman into the FR platform and was immediately signalled for run round. Five minutes later the loco was shunting the ECS to the yard to clear the platform for later arrivals. No.87 arrived at 13:50 with the Snowdonian Star 85 minutes late with no explanation. This could have been due to a late decision to substitute the loco at Dinas. The Quarryman left on time behind Linda. No.87 came back from the depot at 15:45 and ran round the Snowdonia Star in the WHR platform as Blanche was shunting the stock from the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer in the yard. The Snowdonia Star departed at 15:50, some 105 minutes late which would no doubt impact the return working of The Harbourmaster now likely to pass at Beddgelert or Pont Croesor rather than Rhyd Ddu. Blanche departed at 16:00 with the ECS to the depot.
Vale of Ffestiniog turned up at 16:18 in the WHR platform with a single B wagon of coal for the depot. This probably passed the returning Snowdonia Star at Pont Croesor. The loco departed promptly for the depot light engine at 16:30.
This easterly view (20/8/24) shows Vale of Ffestiniog propelling one B wagon of coal into the yard at Porthmadog after transfer from Dinas. Click on the image to enlarge and click again to expand fully where available. Image copyright F&WHR taken on a web camera.
DLG was first back at 17:00 with the Woodland Wanderer. The loco ran round at 17:10 and departed with the ECS 2 minutes later. No.143 arrived back 50 minutes late at 17:15 with The Harbourmaster which had to wait at Beddgelert to pass the very late Snowdonia Star. The train had departed ECS by 1800 and James Spooner was running round the Mountain Spirit in the FR platform at 18:00. The train departed ECS at 18:03 to finish the day's activities.
ERTMS tests on the Cambrian?
Both steam loco Tornado and LSL's Deltic No.55022 have been rumoured nominated to test ERTMS equipment for heritage traction on the southern end of the ECML. Testing may start at night time on the Cambrian Coast with the steam loco or Deltic presumably being dragged into the section from Crewe by an NR Class 97/3.

Linda arrived at 12:44 with The Quarryman as Lilla waited for a path in the WHR platform. Unusually, Lilla propelled its rake back to the depot instead of entering the yard for the 15:45 visit.
Blanche was running round the returned 12:25 Woodland Wanderer in the WHR platform at 14:50 with DLG departing on the Woodland Wanderer having swopped Fairlies. Linda shunted The Quarryman rake back to the FR platform at 15:10 and departed at 15:25 after Blanche had departed with the ECS. the 15:45 Works Visit shuttle seems to have been cancelled. Maybe there were no takers?
In the late afternoon trains began to return. DLG was shunting coal wagons at 17:27 and backed onto the ECS woodland Wanderer. The signaller struggled through the storm to deliver the token and the train departed at 17:33. Merddin Emrys arrived back a little lat at 17:58 with the Mountain Spirit. The loco ran round at 18:24 after refuelling and watering and departed 3 minutes later to close the day's activities.

DLG ran round at 10:17 as No.143 departed. The Woodland Wanderer arrived in the WHR platform behind James Spooner just before the Mountain Spirit departed and the loco ran round by 10:50.
At 11:05 Harlech Castle was on the morning PW train at Tan-y-bwlch awaiting a cross with the Mountain Spirit. As soon the train arrived the PW train left for Minffordd Yard and the Fairlie ran round. Blanche ran through wrong line with The Quarryman at about 12:10.
At 12:59 No.143 arrived back at Porthmadog with the return working of The Aberglaslyn. As usual the loco detached and ran to the yard to refuel and water. The loco returned to the train at 13:25. By 14:20 the afternoon Mountain Spirit was ready to departing the WHR platform and the Fairlie swop had occurred. DLG was shunting to its train at 14:40. The short rake from the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer was back in the WHR platform by 14:45 and Linda waited in the loop as the 14:50 Woodland Wanderer departed. Lilla was also running round ready for the 15:45 Works Visit shuttle while Blanche was ready on the return working of the 15:25 The Quarryman to complete the midday workings.
The first train back was No.143, a little before 16:30. The train proceeded to the depot ECS after about 5 minutes. DLG arrived back at 17:04 with the Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform. Lilla departed with the ECS Works Visit shuttle at 18:13 to close the day's activities.
Anti-English road sign campaign
Welsh Language activists have been busy in Denbighshire painting out the English part of bilingual Welsh first roadsigns in an echo of a campaign that was last seen 50 years ago that caused division and unpleasantness between English and Welsh communities. Not content with Welsh first roadsigns these zealots now want place names that have been used for over 1000 years removed from roadsigns!
This may cause tourists to have difficulty finding places and having to rely more on satnavs. The small group who have painted out St. Asaph, Ruthin and Denbigh from local roadsigns claim these names are 'bastardisations' of the Welsh version. In fact, the imposition of Welsh phonetic spellings on signage in parts of Wales is the true bastardisation: e.g. Buckley rendered as Bwcle and Wrexham as Wrecsam. Let us hope that Police take appropriate action and that their nasty little campaign does not extend to defacing tourist signs directing people to Welsh Highland Railway stations!

F&WHR 13/8/24
The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Tuesday predicted an overcast rainy day with temperatures of 11-19C. Tuesday's train service offered 9 trains in total with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer and The Quarryman). There were two through trains on the WHR plus The Cwellyn. All three webcams were running normally today.
First up today was Vale of Ffestiniog that came over The Cob light engine and entered the FR platform at 08:06. At 08:34 two empty B coal wagons were propelled out onto The Cob. The train departed the WHR platform at 08:58 heading for Dinas to collect coal for the fuelling point. A mystery manoeuvre occurred at 09:15 when a train emerged from Pen Cob junction and set back as far as The Barracks around Pen Cob curve. The train then progressed to stop by the signalbox by 09:18 in the WHR loop to consult with the signalman. No.143 then advanced the train slowly to the WHR starter by 09:28 for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster.
At 09:45 David Lloyd George arrived with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit. No.143 seemed to pull forward a little by 09:50 so that the rear end was clear of the boarded crossing at the east end of the platform. DLG ran round by 10:05. The ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer arrived at 10:20 behind Merddin Emrys in the WHR platform and the loco ran round at 10:25. At 11:45 there was steam shunting at Boston Lodge. Blanche departed from the FR platform at 12:30 with the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer as No.130 arrived in the WHR platform with the Snowdonia Star. The Garratt shunted to the fuelling point at 12:35.
Linda was running round in the yard at 13:30 having arrived with The Quarryman just before 1pm. The ECS from the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer departed at about 15:10 and left the FR platform free for Linda to shunt The Quarryman return working into the platform. Vale of Ffestiniog turned up in the rain with two B wagons of coal from Dinas. at about 15:20 in the WHR platform. Once The Quarryman had departed at around 15:25, the Funkey shunted the coal wagons to the yard. The Funkey left for the depot light engine at 15:46 to conclude the midday workings.
The first of the afternoon returns came at 16:25 with No.143 arriving back on The Harbourmaster. At 16:35 the train departed ECS for the depot in murky conditions. DLG turned up with the Woodland Wanderer just before 17:00. At 17:25 DLG propelled the rake into the sidings. At 17:33 Merddin Emrys hauled the Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. DLG left a minute later with its ECS. Merddin Emrys ran round at 17:55 and departed with the ECS at 17:58 to close the day's activity.

The Met Office forecast for Porthmadog on Monday predicted a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 14-22C after a dull start. Monday's train service offered 9 trains in total with 8 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman and two Works Visit shuttles). There was just one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). All three webcams were running normally for most of the day.
First up today was Lilla which arrived with the ECS for the Works Visit shuttle at 09:43 carrying Y Cymro headboard. The loco ran round in the WHR platform immediately. At 10:01 James Spooner hauled the ECS Mountain Spirit into the FR platform. Once the shuttle had retreated to the Carriage Shed the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer came over to the WHR platform arriving at 10:29 hauled by Merddin Emrys. The loco managed to complete the run round before the Mountain Spirit departed at 10:40.
Blanche turned up in the FR platform with the ECS for the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer and ran round at 11:50. The train left a little late at 12:32 still under gloomy conditions. Lilla now ran round its rake in the yard to form the 15:45 departure. Linda arrived in the FR platform at 12:53 with The Quarryman, ran round and shunted the rake to the yard at 13:00.After the Woodland Wanderer returned, Merddin Emrys uncoupled and hung around by the signalbox waiting for the Fairlie swop as The Mountain Spirit approached across The Cob. James Spooner arrived at 13:54 and the Fairlie uncoupled while Merddin Emrys shunted onto the rear end of the rake. The new Fairlie ran to the yard to refuel and top up with water.
All three webcams went off line at about 14:15 for about 15 minutes. At 15:05 Blanche departed with the ECS from the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer and Linda shunted The Quarryman back to the FR platform. After the 15:25 had departed Lilla could shunt the 15:45 Works Visit shuttle to the FR platform. this left on time as the last of the afternoon departures.

F&WHR 11/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog on Sunday predicted a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 18-27C after a dull start. Sunday's train service offered 8 trains in total with 7 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and two The Aberglaslyn). There was also one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). All three webcams were running normally today.
10:00 was a busy moment at Porthmadog with Merddin Emrys replacing the rostered No.143 on the ECS 10:15 The Aberglaslyn in the WHR platform. This may have been the first time a Fairlie had substituted for a Garratt on this train. Upnor Castle shunted a coach from the seawall siding onto the rear of the rake and then removed four to the seawall siding leaving a 7 coach rake. This reduced the load to a manageable length for the 1 in 40 Nantmor bank. Shortly after 10:00 the Mountain Spirit entered the FR platform and James Spooner ran round at 10:20 ready for the 10:40 departure. David Lloyd George turned up at 10:25 with the ECS for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer into the recently vacated WHR platform. The loco ran to the fuelling point at 10:30. Upnor Castle departed with one coach for the depot at 10:57.
The Aberglaslyn was back by 12:58 and Merddin Emrys uncoupled and ran to the yard to coal and water. At 13:18 the Fairlie was loitering in the yard waiting to return to The Aberglaslyn once The Cob was clear. At 13:21 DLG arrived with the Woodland Wanderer. Merddin Emrys ran through the WHR loop line to couple up to The Aberglaslyn. James Spooner arrived with the Mountain Spirit at 14:04 in the WHR platform. The loco detached and ran to the yard at 14:05 after the Fairlie swop occurred as the sun finally came out. The Fairlie coupled up and the train left at 14:52.
Trains began to return home in the late afternoon with the first being The Aberglaslyn which had arrived in the WHR platform by 16:25. The loco detached and shunted to the refuelling point. Merddin Emrys shunted the yard at 16:35 and added three coaches from the seawall siding at 16:45 departed with the ECS at 17:05.
Saturday's electrical problems
One of Scottish Power's phases that feed Harbour Station failed Saturday morning. Unfortunately it was the phase that fed the signals and point motors as well as Spooners so the railway lost business for the bar and restaurant. Staff worked all day hand cranking and locking points and signalling trains through adverse signals in Harbour Station. There does not seem to be a system to switch to one of the other two phases which continued to work satisfactorily. The Britannia Bridge tramway level crossing lights were reactivated in time for the return working of the Snowdonia Star but could not be turned off again afterwards leading to hand signalling of road traffic until the fuse was pulled!
F&WHR 10/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog on Saturday predicted an improving day with rain at first but sunny periods in the afternoon with temperatures of 15-22C. Saturday's train service offered 7 trains in total with 5 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and The Quarryman). There were also two through trains on the WHR. All three webcams were running normally today. A loco was also allocated for cab rides at Porthmadog.
First up was No.143 which arrived in the mist at 09:43 with ECS for the 10:05 The Harbourmaster. The position of the train was adjusted so the rear end of the 9 coach rake was not blocking the crossing at the east end of the WHR platform. The ECS for the 10:40 Mountain Spirit had appeared in the FR platform after 10:00 and had run round by 10:20. The Harbourmaster departed some 20 minutes late without any obvious reason. Merddin Emrys departed on time with the 10:40 Mountain Spirit in misty weather.
Vale of Ffestiniog was shunting light engine in the yard at 11:00 having probably towed in the Mountain Spirit earlier with the Fairlie on the rear. A large crowd developed on the platform for the 11:10 Woodland Wanderer but the ECS had not arrived. The Funkey departed light engine at 11:02. Vale of Ffestiniog dragged the Woodland Wanderer into the FR platform at 11:21 in the rain with David Lloyd George attached to the rear. The train departed at 11:29 in the rain, almost 20 minutes late, without any obvious reason for the delay. As the weather started to clear Lilla began its cab rides at 11:30, shunting in the yard. The Funkey returned to the depot light engine at about 11:40.
The Snowdonia Star arrived by !2:40 about 15 minutes late as the train had to wait to pass The Harbourmaster which itself was running 20 minutes late. By 12:50 the rake had continued to Boston Lodge for servicing. Linda arrived at 13:12 in the WHR platform with The Quarryman. Vale of Ffestiniog coupled to the rear at 13:23 and the rake was shunted to the yard with Linda still attached. Some attention was being given to the king point out on The Cob when DLG returned with the Woodland Wanderer at 13:58. The train pulled up short by the signalbox before finally making it into the FR platform at 14:00.
130 was back in the platform by 14.30 with the return working of the Snowdonia Star which departed 30 minutes late at 14:35 probably to cross the late running The Harbourmaster at Rhyd Ddu. Once started late the F&WHR likes to give the advertised time at destinations. DLG shunted out of the yard at 14:43 as Merddin Emrys approached with the Mountain Spirit and was checked for a minute out on The Cob at the trident signal while the route was set into the WHR platform. Staff again monitored the king and queen points while the Fairlie swop took place. It appeared that all the points including the yard crossover were being manually operated which also meant the light engine moves were against adverse signals. Consequently the loco had to wait by the signalbox for the king and queen point to be manually reset and again on The Cob before it could draw up to the Mountain Spirit in the WHR platform.
The Mountain Spirit left on time at 15:25 and Merddin Emrys followed to the boarded crossing rather that using the loop, avoiding unnecessary manual point changes. The loco worked through manual point changes to reach the yard to refuel and water at 15:45. Meanwhile Vale of Ffestiniog approached across The Cob with the ECS for the return working of The Quarryman with Linda already attached to the rear at about 15:40. The Harbour Station electrical problems seemed to be growing by the hour as the webcam Live Stream was off line after about 4pm. The electrical problems extended to Spooners which was closed for the rest of the day.
DLG passed through Minffordd at 17:53 with the late running Mountain Spirit. still running over 30 minutes down.
Mainline trains 5-9/8/24
On 5/8/24 No.70803 was followed by a second train from Penmaenmawr that day hauled by No.70809 to Longport.
Nos.37421/405 top and tailed a NR inspection train to Blaenau Ffestiniog on 8/8/24 on a rainy day.

F&WHR 9/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog on Friday predicted a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 14-20C and a mini heat wave this weekend. Friday's train service offered 7 trains in total with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer and two Works Visit shuttles). There was also one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). All three webcams were running normally today.
Lilla arrived back at the signalbox at 12:20 and ran into the yard after the passengers got off. The loco detached and shunted in the yard at 12:25 and completed the run round at 12:55 in the FR platform. At 13:45 Lilla was noted shunting the yard again and the rake for the 14:50 Woodland Wanderer was stabled in the WHR platform having recently returned from its first morning trip. The return working of the morning Mountain Spirit arrived at 13:57 into the FR platform. At 14:00 the Fairlie swop occurred and James Spooner coupled up for the 14:20 Mountain Spirit.
At 14:03 Hugh Napier arrived light engine from the depot with three on the footplate after being released from the Friday 'Have a Go' steam loco course at Boston Lodge. Merddin Emrys coupled up to the Woodland Wanderer at 14:35 ready for the 14:50 working. Lilla reversed into the FR platform at 15:00 with the 15:45 Works Visit shuttle rake. Hugh Napier departed with its three footplate staff at about 16:00.

At 13:25 No.130 had run round the Snowdonia Star and Linda had run round The Quarryman. The Mountain Spirit arrived at 14:03 behind David Lloyd George. Caernarfon Castle arrived in the WHR loop line by 14:10 with a short freight including two ex-SAR PW wagons Nos.4021/2 a DZ and a B wagon with the ex-SAR brake van No.3125 on the rear.
See Dan Holbrook's image.
As soon as the token was handed over No.130 headed back to Caernarfon with the Snowdonia Star. DLG emerged from the yard at 14:28. At 14:35 Merddin Emrys shunted the Woodland Wanderer back into the FR platform as the mist rolled in. At 14:48 Blanche hauled the 12:25 back into the WHR platform as Linda shunted The Quarryman rake back to the FR platform by 15:05. the train departed at 15:25.
First back was No.143 at 16:38 on The Harbourmaster almost quarter of an hour late after encountering wet conditions in the mountains. The Garratt shunted some coaches to the seawall siding (including the Observation Car) and returned to the train light engine. The ECS had to await the arrival of the Woodland Wanderer which arrived in the FR platform at 17:01. The Garratt departed with the ECS at 17:05. At 17:30 James Spooner arrived in the WHR platform with the Mountain Spirit allowing DLG to depart with the ECS. Palmerston to visit L&BR Gala 28-29/9/24
Palmerston is to visit the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway for its end of September Gala. The railway has been struggling a bit recently with internal squabbles and planning issues as regards its extension to Blackmoor Station and Wistlandpound Reservoir. It seems some residents of Parracombe are still objecting to the railway so Palmerston's visit might give the L&BR a boost. The railway recently held consultation meetings at Parracombe over its proposed 700m extension from the current terminus at Killington Lane to Cricketfield Lane, just short of Parracombe Halt. See Rail Advent story. The F&WHR has often lent Lyd to the L&B for its Galas but Palmerston is a new feature. In return the L&BR has lend Baldwin No.762 to the WHR for the 2018 SuperPower. See L&BR Gala webpage for more details.
No SuperPower Souvenir guide!
There will be no Souvenir Guide printed for SuperPower this year which is centred on Caernarfon-Rhyd Ddu. Instead the loco roster and timetables have all been made available on line. Will this also apply to the FR's Bygones event 4-6/10 which might feature a few extras on the WHR at Porthmadog.
F&WHR 7/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog would initially have an overcast morning but sunny periods in the afternoon with temperatures of 14-19C. Wednesday's train service offered 11 trains in total with 7 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman and the Works Visit Shuttle). There are also the four trains on the WHR (two The Aberglaslyn, the Gelert Explorer and The Cwellyn). All three webcams were running normally today. The signaller arrived quite early at about 08:30 today and set some points in the yard before opening the box.
An interesting variation on movements occurred today. No.130 arrived with The Aberglaslyn at 09:54 with the Works Visit shuttle attached to the rear. Lilla shunted the shuttle to the yard at 10:00. At 10:07 David Lloyd George arrived with the Mountain Spirit. Lilla shunted out of the yard to pick it passengers by the signalbox. DLG ran round at 10:18 as The Aberglaslyn departed. One Lilla had disgorged its Works Visit shuttle passengers at Boston Lodge it shunted back to Pen Cob Junction and then into the works. This allowed Merddin Emrys to emerge from the Carriage Shed with the Woodland Wanderer which arrived in the WHR platform at 10:30.
Blanche departed at 12:34 with the midday Woodland Wanderer as Lilla shunted in the yard to prepare for the afternoon shuttle at 15:45. Linda arrived in the FR platform with The Quarryman at 12.56. No.130 had run round the afternoon The Aberglaslyn in the WHR platform by 13:20. Merddin Emrys ran to the signalbox at 13:45 and waited for the Mountain Spirit to arrive to complete the Fairlie swop. as soon as the train arrived,
At 14:45 Linda was shunting The Quarryman back to the platform as Blanche arrived with the return working of the midday Woodland Wanderer into the WHR platform. The loco ran round at 14:55 and departed with the ECS by 15:15. Linda departed with the return working of The Quarryman at 15:25.At 15:47 Lilla departed with the afternoon shuttle.
Trains started returning home with the first being the Woodland Wanderer which arrived behind DLG at 17:01. The Fairlie ran round at 17:10 and departed with the ECS at 17:13. The Mountain Spirit arrives at about 17:45 and run round came at about 18:00. the ECS departed at 18:10 just after Lilla arrived in the WHR platform with the shuttle. At 18:15 Lilla propelled the ECS back to the depot to close the day's activities.

F&WHR 6/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog would have a day of sunny periods with temperatures of 13-19C. Tuesday's train service offered 9 trains with 6 trains on FR (two Mountain Spirit, three Woodland Wanderer and The Quarryman). There are the two through trains on the WHR and The Cwellyn. All three webcams were running normally today.
James Spooner was noted on the Mountain Spirit at 10:30 in the FR platform and the ECS Woodland Wanderer arrived from Boston Lodge for the Woodland Wanderer hauled by Merddin Emrys. This train ran about 5 minutes late. Blanche arrived in the FR platform with the ECS for the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer at 11:43 and ran round at 11:55.
At the end of the afternoon James Spooner ran round the Woodland Wanderer at 17:15 having performed the Fairlie swop earlier in the day. Merddin Emrys pulled in at 17:38 with the Mountain Spirit allowing the ECS Woodland Wanderer to depart 2 minutes later. Merddin Emrys shunted to the refuelling point at 17:44. Run round came at 18:02 and the train departed with the ECS at 18:06 to close the day's activities. The signalbox was closed by 18:18 when the signallers went home.
SuperPower loco roster 13-15/9/24
The loco roster and timetables are now available for SuperPower 2024.
There is just over a month to go until 'Super-Power' Weekend returns to the
Welsh Highland Railway. Some outline details have already been posted and links
to tickets on the website, but the F&WHR has now added the timetables and
additional information on the locos and stock being used over the weekend.
There will be four Garratts in service (NG/G16s Nos.87/130/143
plus pioneer Garratt K1) along with three diesel locos (Castell
Caernarfon/Vale of Ffestiniog and Baguley No.9).
The annotated timetable and accompanying notes can be downloaded from
https://bit.ly/WHR-SP24-TT
For tickets and further information on the weekend, visit the
website.
Click on the link to see images of locos rostered at Superpower this year.
Of concern to people who still hold tickets for the Baldwin 590 event from last year is that there is no mention of this loco which remains at the VoR under repair for a hot axle box. There is also no mention of the F&WHR's resident Baldwin.
F&WHR 5/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog would have a showery overcast day with temperatures of 13-21C. Monday's train service offered 8 trains with 7 trains on FR (three Mountain Spirit, two Woodland Wanderer, The Quarryman and the morning Works Visit Shuttle). There is just one train on the WHR (the Gelert Explorer). All three webcams were running normally today.
At 09:15 the PW train was at Tan-y-bwlch heading east with the FR Mess Car No.1111 on the rear probably with Harlech Castle. Five minutes later it had left towards Dduallt. Lilla arrived on the Works Visit Shuttle at 09:43 in the WHR platform and ran round immediately. At about 09:50 a train reversed out of Boston Lodge and then went forward from Pen Cob Junction towards Minffordd, passing at 09:56. It proved to be Linda with The Quarryman rake, which had spent the weekend being maintained at Boston Lodge.
James Spooner arrived with the ECS for the 10:40 the Mountain Spirit at 10:10 with its cab roof closed given the showery weather forecast (unlike the previous day). David Lloyd George turned up with the first of three Woodland Wanderer trains at 10:40 as the Mountain Spirit made ready to depart and the weather closed in. The run round was delayed until The Cob was clear by 10:48 with departure due at 11:10.
The ECS for the 12:25 Woodland Wanderer arrived hauled by Blanche in the FR platform at 11:53, compromising the rake with the four 4 wheelers and Van No.10. the loco ran round t 12:08. Lilla arrived with the return Works Visit Shuttle at 12:25 dropping its passengers by the signalbox before progressing to the yard. The train was stabled in the yard waiting for its 15:45 duty. Linda arrived at 12:56 with The Quarryman in the FR platform. The loco ran round and shunted the rake to the yard at 13:09 to clear the platform for subsequent arrivals.
DLG was back at 13:25 with the Woodland Wanderer in the FR platform. By 14:05 the Mountain Spirit was back in the WHR platform and the loco had run round. There was severe congestion on The Cob with traffic backing the full mile of The Cob and as no train was due across the Britannia Bridge tramway, the congestion might have been due to an incident on High Street. The train left at 14:21 hauled by DLG following the Fairlie swop. The Cob congestion has cleared by 14:30.
James Spooner emerged from the fuelling point at 14:35 to collect the Woodland Wanderer. Lilla also collected its shuttle rake. Lastly Linda emerged at 14:40 to collect The Quarryman rake. At 14:43 Blanche arrived back in the WHR platform with the rake from the second Woodland Wanderer. At 14:52 James Spooner departed with the Woodland Wanderer using the rake from the first train, the 11:10 after which Blanche could completed its run round.
Linda shunted The Quarryman to the FR platform at 15:07. Blanche left with its ECS a few minutes later, followed by Linda with the return working of The Quarryman at 15:25. Lilla propelled the Works Visit Shuttle rake back into the FR platform at 15:36 and the train departed for Boston Lodge Halt at 15:46.
Trains began to return home in the late afternoon. James Spooner was first back with the Woodland Wanderer at 17:03. The ECS left at 17:20. DLG pulled in at 17:57 with the Mountain Spirit and the loco ran round by 18:08 as the rail gathered in intensity. Maybe the Works Visit shuttle ran early because of the poor weather. The Fairlie departed with the ECS at 18:11 to close the day's activities.
Speed limits raised on Cardiff-Holyhead route
Shorter and more consistent journey times are likely in the future now that TfW has raised speed limits at 38/40 locations for its Class 67 Mk4 loco hauled trains. See Rhyl Journal story for more details.
F&WHR 4/8/24
The Met Office forecast Porthmadog would have an improving day of sunny periods later with temperatures of 16-19C. Sunday's train service offered 8 trains with five trains on FR (both Mountain Spirit/Woodland Wanderer and the morning Works Visit Shuttle). There are also three trains on the WHR (two The Aberglaslyn and the Gelert Explorer). All three webcams were running normally today.
First up was No.87 which arrived in the WHR platform with the ECS for the 10:15 The Aberglaslyn by 09:45. James Spooner arrived with the ECS for the 10:45 Mountain Spirit at 10:05 in the FR platform. Lilla and its 3 coach Works Visit shuttle then exited the yard to park on the short length of the FR platform vacant near the signal box to collect the group visiting Boston Lodge. The shuttle left at 10:12 followed by the Garratt at 10:17.
No.87 arrived back by 13:00 and the loco had run round by 13:10 ready for the 13:40 The Aberglaslyn. The Mountain Spirit had arrived back by 13:50 into the WHR platform and David Lloyd George shunted out of the yard to couple up. At 14:50 James Spooner departed on the Woodland Wanderer having completed the Fairlie swop.
No.87 was back at 16:30 and the ECS departed at 16:38. James Spooner arrived with the return working of the Woodland Wanderer at about 16:57. Run round came at 17:05 and the train departed ECS for the depot at 17:08 to complete the day's movements.
Tan-y-bwlch or bust 2024
Paul Lewin (GM F&WHR) explains :It’s a quiet Sunday afternoon and all trains heading for home on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways….. or are they? The (now) electric Wickham Trolley is about to go on a test run after an upgrade to the control and transmission systems. So just as it was for Allan Garraway and his gang almost seventy years back it is ‘Tan-y-bwlch or bust’. So we called it a day at Dduallt with a list of further upgrades to work on. Click on the Facebook video link for more details.

All three webcams were running normally today.

There will be an intensive timetable between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu over the
weekend including service trains and extra event trains. There are a number of
mixed trains hauled by K1or an NGG16 and there are some passenger
diesel hauled trains including an unusual outing for No.9. Dinas

where we are very much hoping to see the NG15 No.134 in steam!
There will be refreshments at Dinas on both days including a hot food van, a
number of stalls & information stands in the goods shed, a 5” gauge line
operating, tours of the works and footplate rides. Goods shed cafe open from

Tryfan Junction and Waunfawr station buildings will also be open during the
weekend and event ticket holders are encouraged to visit.
On Saturday there is an opportunity to do a guided walk down the Bryngwyn
branch. A minibus will take you to Cae Haidd and the walk is expected to take
around 90 minutes, finishing at Tryfan Junction with a train back to Dinas. Cae
Haidd is the southern terminus of the improved footpath before the inaccessible
loop around Bryngwyn Farm. There are two walks planned – one leaving around
09:45 (returning to Dinas at 12:00) and the other around 13:45 (returning to
Dinas at 16:10). These walks will be free to all event rover ticket holders but
should be booked so we can arrange transport.
On Sunday, there will be a guided walk around the Dinas site to explain the
upcoming civil engineering and building construction work for the new layout and
Carriage Shed. For those staying at the Porthmadog end of the line, there is an
early 08:20 train to Caernarfon on the Saturday morning, returning by 18:15 and
on the Sunday, there is an additional Harbourmaster service.
This is likely to be the last event we run at Dinas for some time, so please
come and support this event, see the NG15 in steam and learn more about future
plans!
Please Note: parking is limited at Dinas but we will endeavour to fit you in.
Tickets for Super-Power event weekend can now be purchased on the F&WHR website.
